How Much Data Do You Use In A Day? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Over the past 2 days, I have used almost 2GB of data. Thank God I am on unlimited data.

I know right? Unlimited! But seriously, I try not to think about it. Because I just don't care unless Sprint starts randomly throttling me.

What do you do? Stream p0rn? Chrome can't use that much data unless you're streaming stuff or heavy downloading

Ah no wonder haha, everyone here with massive data usage on browser have all admitted to downloading/streaming p0rn ? the most I use in a day is around 500mb because Spotify kills data on extreme quality sound haha

Oh right, I love Spotify simply because it takes no memory and you have virtually any mainstream songs and album right at your disposal

Didn't think of it like that Might download Spotify now!!! How do you keep the music on offline mode though?

A little over 1GB a night. Downloading ROMs, and apps. WiFi has been flaky lately because of Comcast.
Seeing a stupid comment on Google Play about an app you love and marking it as "spam". You've done it too.

For offline mode, you make your play list and at the top you press the offline mode toggle like the photo below. Then it will just download the songs to your phone.

That's right haha. They used to be great. Had them reprovision my Motorola Surfboard and still couldn't get connected so they had to send out a service technician for tomorrow.

I average about 25-35gb use in a month, so I use about 1gb a day on average. yup, unlimited high speed data, tmo

I use about a gig/day.

Have you noticed slightly more battery drain when streaming extreme quality? I haven't used spotify with high/normal but whenever I stream on soundcloud which seems to be lower quality I don't get as much battery drain.
On topic: I usually use 100-500 depending on what I'm doing. Probably at least 100 mbs though streaming music during commute.

no, with wifi ON it will not use data. You can also use the free wifi calling at home and it won't count against your minutes.
Today I got throttled for going over the 5GB . but the funny thing is that I did it on purpose to see if they will actually throttle my account or not. well they did lol 2 more days until next billing cycle.. It sucks, the fastest I'm getting is 53kbps.

As far as WiFi that you are stating is it WiFi picking up from an access point or USING your portable Wifi hotspot??
If you are using your Wii, PS3, etc. and using your phone as a WiFi, it will use your data and it will eat it quick.
I used my phone as a WiFi to coneect to my Wii and two Netflix in....I was throttled!!!!
Hope this makes sense??

[Q] Tether Apps that hide usage?

Hi everyone,
Wondering what apps people use for wireless tether that hide data usage from carriers. I currently use PDANET and also have wireless tether installed, but are there settings in wireless tether I can set so it will hide the usage? I did find some hits from other devices that had specific changed to the wireless tether source to do this, but nothing for the Charge. Any suggestions? Thank you!
Tom
It's impossible. YOU CANT HIDE FROM THE COMPANY MAN!
Sent from my Droid Charge running GummyCharged 2.0
AFAIK, if you're running the Gingerbread leak, hiding your usage is pretty much impossible.
crap, thanks for the info guys. Can't hide from the man

No they can't. They can only see your traffic-for instance, logging on to Xbox Live will raise some suspicion because it wouldn't make sense for a phone to be logging in. Just don't use ridiculous amounts of data and don't go to any stupid sites.

Actually, it shouldn't be too hard for them to capture a packet and check the headers, which should tell them if the traffic is valid phone traffic or tether traffic. That is unless your tether software is re-shaping packets that flow through it.
But with all of their customers as long as you don't stand out, they won't look

If they want to, they can tell when you're tethering and when you aren't, regardless of how good the app you're using claims to be.

That would assume that they have individual people scanning packets, rather than a piece of software monitoring packets and throwing flags. If you have software watching information, it doesn't matter how many sources it's coming from.
Well just set up my tether at the airport. Guess I will see when the bill comes it.

So far in 3 months I've used 165 GB. I do most of the bandwidth heavy stuff at night after 11 PM or 12 AM.
The thing is Verizon really doesn't care what you do. If a tower is congested they will throttle you, but that almost never happens except during peak hours. So if you're torrenting at 7 PM, your data may be (very temporarily) throttled to less than 1 mbps. But wait until 10 or 11 PM and you can consume data to your heart's delight.
Verizon's network is relatively robust (not nearly as good as European carriers though), so they could easily offer unlimited LTE to everyone, with throttling only during peak hours (4-10 PM). They don't do it though because they'd rather sell you 22 GB for $180, or just catch people with overage charges.
Yep I use all my data during night (10pm-6am) I work at that time and use my laptop at work with my phone. Verizon never said anything to me or slowed my connection

Running Liquid 3.2, Have an unlimited plan(grandfathered in). If i tether using an app (Open garden Wifi Tether" to my tablet will they know im tethering and charge me or and im still 007(as in in the clear)
Thanks!
From what I understand, they can't monitor what tethering app you are using. All they can see is that your data usage is going up. Depending on how much you use they may send you a notice about the dramatic increase. But screw them you just been downloading a lot of music, and YouTube videos. Lol

The tethering apps are free, but the data being used depends on your data plan. if you have unlimited data then you have no worries. But if you are on a plan that has data limits be very mindful of how much you have been using.

Facebook too heavy on Data Usage

I have a very limited data plan (500mb) and if I use regular facebook stock app, it uses about 70% of my total data because of the photos (which I don't even want to see)
Is there something like Text-Only-Facebook?
U are complaining ? I have to get along with ridiculous 200mb a month xD
But you're right with Facebook. The app users a lot of data and is unbearable slow. I use the mobile website which is way better in speed an data usage

Go to settings in the app and change the update frequency to never.
It wont use as much data. It will still refresh everytime you open the app.
I would also recommend using the touch site at touch dot facebook.
To save more bandwidth, I would suggest using Opera as your browser as it compresses incoming data for you! I get at least a 50% data compression with it pretty consistently.
Tried Friendcaster, no good. The only difference is that the traffic will be listed under "FriendCaster" instead of Facebook.
I don't like the mobile version via browser. Any solution?

Install Onavo count and Onavo Extend. It will connect you through a VPN (kinda like Opera does) and compress your data
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.onavo.android.onavoics
It even tells you how much traffic you save. Onavo count has some neat widgets that let you see how much traffic you used.

WTF??!! INSANE data usage from Voice Alerts app

Whats up guys,
I've been using Voice Alerts for about 1 year now. Its been working fine, with the occasional crash here and there. But past few weeks my battery had been dying really quickly, I didn't really think much of it until I started getting emails from AT&T about my data usage. I'm on the 2gig data plan, and according to my phone, this "voice alerts" app has been eating up my data. So far I've eaten through 4 gigs in about 2 weeks, which is insane because I average about 1 to1.5gigs of data on a "heavy" month. I took a screenshot that says Voice Alerts used 1.5 gigs in 1 week. I've never had this problem before, and this app has no reason to connect to the internet. What would cause this problem? I've emailed the developer and still have not gotten a reply. I've uninstalled it for now. Cost me $20 in additional data overages so far.
link to app in google play here:
EDIT: I cant post outside links yet, but the app is called "voice alerts" by Alex Corbi
Thanks for your help!
Is the data usage the same with ATT? Call #data*
Long shot but worth checking. I can't imagine it would go through that much, perhaps it got stuck re downloading some sort of info. Can't really help much other than that. Basic steps such as reinstall and cache clean for the app are likely your best bet.

I would agree, this is your best bet. Also, this is a perfect example of why everybody should occasionally check their data usage meter, just to keep an eye out for things like this! Unless you're on WiFi basically all the time, it's a good practice to just keep an eye on the data usage meter. Lots of apps out there can sometimes go haywire and cause this type of problem.
