I have a very limited data plan (500mb) and if I use regular facebook stock app, it uses about 70% of my total data because of the photos (which I don't even want to see)
Is there something like Text-Only-Facebook?
U are complaining ? I have to get along with ridiculous 200mb a month xD
But you're right with Facebook. The app users a lot of data and is unbearable slow. I use the mobile website which is way better in speed an data usage
If it wasn't for Facebook, even 200mb would be way too much for me

Go to settings in the app and change the update frequency to never.
It wont use as much data. It will still refresh everytime you open the app.
I would also recommend using the touch site at touch dot facebook.
To save more bandwidth, I would suggest using Opera as your browser as it compresses incoming data for you! I get at least a 50% data compression with it pretty consistently.
Tried Friendcaster, no good. The only difference is that the traffic will be listed under "FriendCaster" instead of Facebook.
I don't like the mobile version via browser. Any solution?

Install Onavo count and Onavo Extend. It will connect you through a VPN (kinda like Opera does) and compress your data
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.onavo.android.onavoics
It even tells you how much traffic you save. Onavo count has some neat widgets that let you see how much traffic you used.
Is my personal data safe with this?

Yes, i use it all the time, never had problems. It's even recommended by the google staff picks.
I've tried but I don't see any real savings in data usage
If you're in Canada I can tell you a company that offers unlimited data . Oh, and it's just $10.

I'm curious if there's an app that'll track\report data usage, and break it down between wifi and gprs\cellular data. I'm using my Inspire 4G on a network that doesn't provide me usage reporting, so I'm curious if "there's an app for that" hehe
Thanks!
PS - I'm rooted so if it's a root-needing app that's fine too.

If I was on ATT I would do that or just login to my online account... I have an unmetered data provider, who doesn't report back usage, so I just want a way to know for my own curiosity.

The free "Traffic Monitor" widget from the market isn't bad. It shows wi-fi vs OTA traffic with upstream, downstream, and total data used. It also breaks the data down by individual apps and does have a built-in speedtest.

There is a monitor application that comes on the MIUI rom that does this. You could probably pull the apk from the rom if you don't want to use MIUI. Or it could be a market app for all I know.

Don't know why your 4G is slow, but I'm in Hawaii and I too sometimes have horrible 4G connection...BUT, I have found an AWESOME solution for this and not will it only speed up your browsing, you will also extend your battery life and be able to multitask, with live active tabs that will keep streaming video and audio in one window while surfing on another!
The solution is download for free from the market Opera Mini 6 for the FASTEST mobile browsing and if you want Flash videos and live active tabs that will still stream while jumping between tabs download Opera Mobile 11.
Then you can disable 4G and opt only to use 2G, which increases your battery life by up to 4 times, because the Opera browsers renders the web pages server side, thereby speeding up the browsing experience and lessening the data that you would otherwise be using up on your limited or "unlimited" plan.
If you're not familiar with the Award winning Opera mini browser at first you might be appalled that it looks to basic and doesn't support flash (Opera Mobile does support flash videos), but after you learn and get used to the browsers, you'll find that it's the BEST, most refined browser for a mobile device. Period.
Don't forget to enable Turbo mode if you opt to use Opera Mobile, but Opera Mini is still by far the fastest mobile browser on the planet even if you only use 2G. Hope this helps with your slow connection and the G2x horrible battery life.
EDIT: besides setting network to only 2G and using the Opera mobile or mini browser to surf the web, another tweak for even longer battery life is to disable background data. As always you can always enable 4G and background data if you don't care about battery life by downloading the 2g-3g OnOff widget from the market to easily switch between 2g and 4g.

I was thinking the same thing. damn.
Yeah, I can say so myself that 4G is slow. Using the speedtest app, I get .90/.70 on average. My wifes MT4G, gets an average of 5.60/1.0. I benched the phones on our kitchen table. Ran the speed tests 3 times on each phone. For signal strength, my G2x has 1-2 bars, while the MT4G has full bars.
Edit: and no, im not data throttled.

I've tried Dolphin, it's a nice fancy browser like the stock one and safari, heck I've tried alot of mobile browsers, but the flaw with these "high profile" browsers is that they're not true multitasking browsers.
Yeah they may pretend to look like how it does on a desktop, but the moment you try and open more than one window, you effectively make the others inactive. Not only that, but to really enjoy Dolphin, Skyfire, stock, etc. you NEED to have a good 4G connection, and we all know how much energy 4G sucks out of the battery.
Opera Mobile on the other hand has true desktop mutlitasking experience. You can open many "Windows" and say watch an interview on Youtube on one, then switch to another tab, like say XDA G2x forums and read up on recent updates, while still listening to the interview that's playing on the Youtube window, then when you get bored reading XDA, you can open a 3rd window and search for online radio, all while the other windows are alive and active. All this can be done using 2G because Opera renders pages on their server saving you data usage and giving you sufficient speed on "slower" connections, all this and saving you much needed battery life.
Don't get me wrong I love the other browsers, but until they come up with a fix for the horrible 4G network and update those "high profile" browsers to use less battery, Opera Mobile and Mini are the most well thought browsers meant for mobile use.
EDIT: no I don't work for Opera, I just feel that I've found the perfect solution at the moment for some "flaws" I've discovered with the G2x and Android battery demand, and I just wanted to help out the G2x community to love even more this powerhouse of a phone without having to have battery anxiety and still enjoy a full featured internet experience on a not so fast 4G network.

Curious as to why my monthly data numbers are so high, I signed up for the Onavo beta. Basically it monitors your apps and tell you how much data they are using. After letting it run for about a hour, my Dialer app is far and away the leader. It pulls in about 9 megabytes per hour. Any clues as to why this is so high? Btw I am using humble 1.51 rom.

That sucks. Because I try to be data conscience. But it seems as though you are basically set up to fail. I feel sorry for those that are not on unlimited data plans. I just noticed there is an option in the app to set the dailer app to use only wifi data. I wonder if that will help with saving battery life. I will check back.

So I noticed today that most of my data is going through Adblock. Just wondering if this is due to it monitoring traffic for ads so its routed through the app.
This is my first Android device and I'm a bit apprehensive having all my internet traffic go through an app that isn't on the Play Store.

Have you noticed slightly more battery drain when streaming extreme quality? I haven't used spotify with high/normal but whenever I stream on soundcloud which seems to be lower quality I don't get as much battery drain.
On topic: I usually use 100-500 depending on what I'm doing. Probably at least 100 mbs though streaming music during commute.
