Slow 4G - T-Mobile LG G2x

I have had great speeds with my 4g network.......out of nowhere after I did a hard reset ofbthe early gingerbread release now on speedtest.net I am getting 21kbps and its taking ridiculously long to download anything. 4g is showing up as active tho. Anybody have an idea as to why it would slow down all of a sudden or had this problem before? Just wondering if its t mobiles network or something wrong with my phone. Someone else I know has the same phone and speedtest is giving them 7000+ kbps. SN: they are n the same area as me

Did you by any chance download over 5 gigs?? ever thought you might be throttled?? did you get tmo message saying you went over your download limit?? If you did then your download speeds are throttled to 56k until the billing cycle ends.
G2X

I get lucky to get 1.5mbps on this so called 4G. But hey, i get 1.5mbps from verizon too. Good riddance. And I live in new york.

Don't know why your 4G is slow, but I'm in Hawaii and I too sometimes have horrible 4G connection...BUT, I have found an AWESOME solution for this and not will it only speed up your browsing, you will also extend your battery life and be able to multitask, with live active tabs that will keep streaming video and audio in one window while surfing on another!
The solution is download for free from the market Opera Mini 6 for the FASTEST mobile browsing and if you want Flash videos and live active tabs that will still stream while jumping between tabs download Opera Mobile 11.
Then you can disable 4G and opt only to use 2G, which increases your battery life by up to 4 times, because the Opera browsers renders the web pages server side, thereby speeding up the browsing experience and lessening the data that you would otherwise be using up on your limited or "unlimited" plan.
If you're not familiar with the Award winning Opera mini browser at first you might be appalled that it looks to basic and doesn't support flash (Opera Mobile does support flash videos), but after you learn and get used to the browsers, you'll find that it's the BEST, most refined browser for a mobile device. Period.
Don't forget to enable Turbo mode if you opt to use Opera Mobile, but Opera Mini is still by far the fastest mobile browser on the planet even if you only use 2G. Hope this helps with your slow connection and the G2x horrible battery life.
EDIT: besides setting network to only 2G and using the Opera mobile or mini browser to surf the web, another tweak for even longer battery life is to disable background data. As always you can always enable 4G and background data if you don't care about battery life by downloading the 2g-3g OnOff widget from the market to easily switch between 2g and 4g.

Sounds like you work for Opera.

Check your data usage on your T-Mobile account online. Sounds like you might have been throttled due to reaching your data cap.

I was thinking the same thing. damn.

Yeah, I can say so myself that 4G is slow. Using the speedtest app, I get .90/.70 on average. My wifes MT4G, gets an average of 5.60/1.0. I benched the phones on our kitchen table. Ran the speed tests 3 times on each phone. For signal strength, my G2x has 1-2 bars, while the MT4G has full bars.
Edit: and no, im not data throttled.

I've tried Dolphin, it's a nice fancy browser like the stock one and safari, heck I've tried alot of mobile browsers, but the flaw with these "high profile" browsers is that they're not true multitasking browsers.
Yeah they may pretend to look like how it does on a desktop, but the moment you try and open more than one window, you effectively make the others inactive. Not only that, but to really enjoy Dolphin, Skyfire, stock, etc. you NEED to have a good 4G connection, and we all know how much energy 4G sucks out of the battery.
Opera Mobile on the other hand has true desktop mutlitasking experience. You can open many "Windows" and say watch an interview on Youtube on one, then switch to another tab, like say XDA G2x forums and read up on recent updates, while still listening to the interview that's playing on the Youtube window, then when you get bored reading XDA, you can open a 3rd window and search for online radio, all while the other windows are alive and active. All this can be done using 2G because Opera renders pages on their server saving you data usage and giving you sufficient speed on "slower" connections, all this and saving you much needed battery life.
Don't get me wrong I love the other browsers, but until they come up with a fix for the horrible 4G network and update those "high profile" browsers to use less battery, Opera Mobile and Mini are the most well thought browsers meant for mobile use.
EDIT: no I don't work for Opera, I just feel that I've found the perfect solution at the moment for some "flaws" I've discovered with the G2x and Android battery demand, and I just wanted to help out the G2x community to love even more this powerhouse of a phone without having to have battery anxiety and still enjoy a full featured internet experience on a not so fast 4G network.

Besides, I've tried Opera and while it was great back in my Sony K750i tzones days, it is still decent for Android but not great. I prefer stock browser.

ESPN 3

ESPN 3 works really well with this new processor. On the Nexus it was really choppy watching in the browser. The base requirements are 1.5 ghz processor for optimum viewing experience. With the Nexus I would have to overclock 1152, it was better but still choppy.
Isn't that 1.5ghz recommendation based on you watching on a PC though?

Well it doesn't specify browser vs. mobile browser since it technically only supports (former) Windows, Linux, Safari etc. It is still a little choppy on occasion with this processor, but performs much better than the Nexus or EVO while viewing.
When I got to ESPN3 I get the red screen that tells me I have to pick my internet provider for it to work.. if you do so as well what do you select? are you doing this over wifi and selecting your isp, if so is it possible for it to work on network and not wifi?
Are you serious? You can watch espn 3 on this phone?

Yes. choose your internet provider and sign in remote access. If you are watching over wifi and you already have it with your cable company it should give you access right away.

Speed Test App Locks up

Has anyone else experianced this it has happened to me from day one when i open up speed test app and it says finding closest server the bar that scrolls back and forth jumps around lags stops then it says the closest server is witchita kansas and i live in south florida now sometimes it works flawless finds a server in miami but everytime i run the test it takes 30 to 45 seconds before it even starts it just says testing ping then it comes on ping time is usally around 130 210 ms but most of the time it dosent work at all says network error but if i toggle airplane mode or data on off and try again it works great the first time but any subsequent time requires toggling the data
Sounds like you just have a poor network connection. Depending on what part of Clewiston you live in, there are some pretty significant gaps in AT&T coverage.
How does the speedtest app work for you when you are on wifi?
wifi seems ok the randomness of the speedtest app is crazy i usually have full bars at my house but even showing fukk bars i get the network error and one it throws me that error i have found that i have no data at all i can place calls but cant log on facebook or connect to the market cant send recieve e-mails or sms i have to toggle my data on off and then it goes back to work then if i run speed test it works ok the first time if i run it again right after that it gives me network error and i have to toggle data i dont know if its the app i have been having these random network issues from the time i got the phone but it seems more prevalent with the speed test app i have unninstalled and reinstalled the speed test app but one i lose my data it never comes back without toggling on and off it majorly blows
Absolutley sounds like a data problem in your area. Full bars just indicates a strong radio signal from the tower. There's a lot more that needs to happen to get good data throughput. I suggest giving AT&T tech support a call.
They will be much more helpful than any of us can be on this forum.

Maybe it just can't keep up with the blazing speed of the AT&T network? HEHE, sorry I just had to say it... And even I can't keep a straight face while typing that, hahahaha.
Mine has locked up several times on the upload portion of the test. This usually occurs when the data speed is bad, like dial-up bad.

afaik you can't 'improve' tethering, it either works or its a crap connection as it depends on your phone's signal strength... I get good results with the wifi tether 3.0 (or 3.1 can't remember ) pre-12 version, though I don't play xbox over the connection so I couldn't say if it works okay

4G vs WIFI

This is weird when I run speed test on 4g I have download speeds of 7mbs avg. When I run Wifi I get avg of 3mbs which is about half as fast, but as far as my expierence Wifi works twice as fast when surfing web or downloading files what gives. What do you guys prefer, I mean while you are home around Wifi.

Generally my results are similar. My home ISP is pretty terrible though, really the only time I use Wifi is to download ROMs, for whatever reason I seem get issues if I download them over the Mobile Network, possibly corrupted downloads.
Otherwise just for Wifi calling.

WiFi & 4G are around the same at my home.... WiFi is usually around 9.5 mb/s while 4G is around 6 to 7 mb/s. Call quality is noticeably better on 4G than WiFi.
T-Mo has a free option in your account to not get charged for WiFi calling minutes...it's disabled by default so log on or call and get it changed if you use WiFi for calling.

This is my theory remember its not fact just a theory.
Using the mobile data connection you have to share with every person in that area on T-Mobile. Using wifi you only share with the people in your neighborhood. Even tho you are getting those speeds with a higher ping because of couple hundred people playing pandora or something it will slow the process.
Another thing remember a speed test is just that a test. It is done in a short period of time. I can run a speed test at my house through out the day and get varying results. Even while getting the max DL speed sometimes things will take longer to load then when Im barely getting 1mb speeds. The load on the network has a very large result on how fast things actually download.
Good point

Facebook too heavy on Data Usage

I have a very limited data plan (500mb) and if I use regular facebook stock app, it uses about 70% of my total data because of the photos (which I don't even want to see)
Is there something like Text-Only-Facebook?
U are complaining ? I have to get along with ridiculous 200mb a month xD
But you're right with Facebook. The app users a lot of data and is unbearable slow. I use the mobile website which is way better in speed an data usage
If it wasn't for Facebook, even 200mb would be way too much for me

Go to settings in the app and change the update frequency to never.
It wont use as much data. It will still refresh everytime you open the app.
I would also recommend using the touch site at touch dot facebook.
To save more bandwidth, I would suggest using Opera as your browser as it compresses incoming data for you! I get at least a 50% data compression with it pretty consistently.
Tried Friendcaster, no good. The only difference is that the traffic will be listed under "FriendCaster" instead of Facebook.
I don't like the mobile version via browser. Any solution?

Install Onavo count and Onavo Extend. It will connect you through a VPN (kinda like Opera does) and compress your data
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.onavo.android.onavoics
It even tells you how much traffic you save. Onavo count has some neat widgets that let you see how much traffic you used.
