I just ordered the Gear 2 but now I'm having second thought. Is Gear 2 dying product? No support from Samsung anymore? Is Gear S is new version of Gear 2 or Gear 3 is coming out soon? I'm thinking whether i should cancel the order and wait for Gear 3.
i'll primary use Gear 2 watch for fitness. Sometimes phone call and notification too. I don't like the Gear Fit and Gear S is huge for my taste.

I would suggest finding a place where you can try out the watch, having the latest doesn't necessary mean the best. Samsung is very limited on after sale support, there has been update to the watches but they dont have a consistent environment between the gear S and the gear 2 which has confused third party developers. The news of a new watch is also limited to probably launched with the new Note line. The new one will be circular as well adding another level of complexity for third part developers to make apps.
The advantage of the gear 2 is the camera, no watch does that and is the only reason to get it right now. there is no info that a new watch with a camera is coming any time soon. there are other watch that are cheaper that will give you the same functionality, like the gear live.
hope this helps,

There is no any real official news regarding Gear3 but it seems Gear3 will be on Android Wear OS if there is one, so it is a completely different division. On the other hand, Gear2 and Gear S are both running with Tizen OS. Gear Fit is RTOS I think mainly relay on your phone power and OS.
Well, Gear S is here..but it doesnt have camera and IR as Gear2[hooray!] So Gear 2 is not really dead. Tizen is dead, however. biktor_nj(hope didnt spell wrong) at Development thread is porting Android Wear to it. So above all it is not dead
I have been trying the samsung gear 2 for a week now. Perfect for me. I am wondering if the Gear Fit works the same. I am interested in notifications and step counting. Is the gear fit also waterproof?
I noticed pdadb just listed a version of the Gear S3 Classic with LTE (model SM-R775S):
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=device&id=10937&c=samsung_sm-r775s_gear_s3_classic_lte
This version only supports LTE Band 5 (850 MHz), so it is limited to SK Telecom in South Korea. What are the odds that Samsung will eventually release the Gear S3 Classic with LTE internationally? I like the look of the Classic better than the Frontier, and I was disappointed that only the Frontier would include LTE in the US.

It's tough to say, it's been reported that the S3 isn't replacing the S2. I'm sure it's because of the Note 7 fiasco, Samsung needed to convince users that they're still better than other companies so they probably rushed the new Gear S3's out. I don't doubt in the future that all versions of the Gear's will eventually have the option for LTE but I doubt they will for this generation.

Yeah, you've definitely put a lot of thought into making the Gear S3 being rushed anaylsis. Almost 3 months after announcements or introductions rather and it's now hitting the streets right? I think that you have it all figured out and should be Samsung's new CEO. Again, great analysis and spendid remarks relating the release to the "Note 7 fiasco". You're great man. Need more insight like yours. Haha.

The Gear S2 was released a year ago in October so a new Gear a year later is in keeping with an annual upgrade cycle. Samsung threw the kitchen sink at the Gear S3 - MST payments, a new power efficient 14nm SoC, 8M color always on display, huge battery (for a wearable), watch-grade stainless steel, extra sensors, LTE, stand-alone GPS that works (previous Gear's were a joke), and knurled details on the bezel and buttons. That's a heap load of stuff for a "rushed" watch. To accommodate all that stuff the Gear S3 is considerably larger. Keeping the Gear S2 and updating its s/w makes sense for people looking for a less formidable wearable. Samsung want to sell wearables and I'm sure would be just as happy to sell Gear S2's alongside the S3.
A recent poll on another mobile website had the Frontier picked as more desirable over the Classic by 3:1. So offering only the Frontier in LTE initially seems like a sound choice. You can dress the Frontier up with the Classic's leather band but the Frontier's silicone bands will look goofy on the Classic. The Frontier launched in Korea has three LTE bands. So the site saying a Classic with one LTE band is coming doesn't sound right. But if it's on the Internet it must be true.

Well pardon me guys, I'm just going off of other articles that I've read. I don't own one, never have. But I answered a vague question that cannot be answered without Samsung officially announcing anything. Now, do a quick Google search and you'll see everything I have said, outside of my own personal opinions. I'm surprised the mods here let you two bash members on here for attempting to help out other fellow members.
Here's a quote and a link for you guys, enjoy:
"With the Gear S3 officially not "replacing" the Gear S2, both lines are intended to complement each other. So even though the Gear S3 has more features than the Gear S2, the shift in design and bulk may mean styling will be the biggest differentiator when thinking about picking one of them up."

I was reacting to your comments about the Gear S3 being rushed. What you just posted has nothing to do with that. At the Gear S3 announcement Samsung said the Gear S2 would carry on and be updated. So I'm kind of confused as to what your original post was meant to convey. The Gear S2 continuing to be sold has nothing to do with the timing or positioning of the Gear S3 and a twelve month development cycle certainly doesn't point to it being rushed.

Samsung took a big hit after the note 7 issue, would you agree? Ok, good. When did the note 7 get recognized as a problem but Samsung officially and compare it to when Samsung announced the gear S3. Evidence shows that they probably changed plans to release earlier than intended. I'm just connecting the dots and obviously it's my own opinion, the original question couldn't be answered in any other way because Samsung hasn't made any announcements regarding what the OP was asking. Your logic is saying that the S7 didn't replace the S6, when it did, just like the S6 replaced the S5. Just because a company still supports it doesn't mean that it hasn't been replaced. But Samsung OFFICIALLY stated that the Gear S3 wasn't a replacement for the S2. Anyways, I'm not here to raise my post count, I was here to attempt to help so I'd recommend contributing to the thread from this point forward.
Thanks for the insightful replies.
I reviewed the history of the Gear S2 Classic, and the LTE version was released in the US in March of 2016, around the time of MWC. Therefore, I am predicting we will see an LTE version of the Gear S3 classic released at the end of Q1 2017. However, it probably depends on how well the other versions of the Gear S3 sell between now and then.
I think I will wait. By then Google will likely have released their own Android Wear watches, and other manufacturers will probably be introducing new Android Wear 2.0 wearables.

You're probably right. The next generation of Android Wear watches will move towards standalone capability. A new crop of SIM enabled watches along the lines of the LG Urbane 2 will be launched next year.
As an unwavering Google Voice user, I have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of AW 2.0 devices in order to transition to a watch phone. But unexpectedly needing a new phone sooner rather than later and Samsung adding MST to their watch was sufficient to make me pull the trigger now. Since smartwatch technology is still in its infancy, I only expect 18-24 months of useful life from any of them. So I'll reassess the landscape when AW 3.0 arrives.

Have you ever worked at a Fortune 100 equivalent sized company? It appears not. Products aren't developed singularly or sequentially - many are developed in tandem and with months long lead times.
I'm very familiar with the Note7, I had two before ending up exchanged in to a S7 Edge. What was going on with the Note7 and mobile phone division most likely had little or no impact on Gear development. I'm pretty confident they're product managed by different internal groups. I'm equally confident the goal with the launch of the Gear S3 was to get it out as close to concurrently with the Apple Watch Series 2 and before the holidays. From a business perspective that's a more important reason to get it to market then making it a "look over here" to somehow take attention off the Note7 debacle. With that said the Gear S3 is late not early. Wearables are a drop in the bucket revenue wise to Samsung (and Apple and all others who sell them) and I assure you after losing $5B and 10% of their market cap over the Note7 a watch, any watch, isn't going to distract from that.
P.S. - I've run product management for a Fortune 100 equivalent company.
Hi,
Just after a bit of user advice, I have been looking up information on both the s3 and the new gear sport, and I'm really interested in the gear sport due to its waterproof abitlities. Which to me means I could still wear my watch while bathing the kids or washing the pots or taking a shower. The question I have is can I reply to notification' s and text messages as well as take and answer calls like you can on the S3 frontier?

AFAIK, the Gear Sport supports all of those functions, it does everything the S3 classic and Frontier do, as well as adding better waterproofing and focus on active "sport" activities.

Not sure where you got that info but the Gear Sport does not do everything. A lot of hands-on reviews (during previews) have confirmed no LTE version, and no speaker on the Gear Sport. It's likely that way in order to have the device gain a better water resistance rating. Strangely, they don't go in-depth about the lack of but call it out and mention to they'll go deeper into that on full reviews when the device is out. I guess time will tell but I think the Gear Sport is more Garmin like versus the do-it-all of the S3.
Definitely no support for making or receiving calls on the watch although you can reply to texts but only if you're still connected to your smartphone at the same time, the watch is 'offline' when not connected to your smartphone although you can use GPS and spotify in offline mode.

Source for your info?
Been following this forum for a bit, and would like to hear views on whether the GW4 is worth the upgrade from the Gear S3 Frontier, particularly in Canada, where several of the GW4's features (e.g., BP, ECG) are currently not enabled. Now, before anyone says that the Gear S3 is 'years old' etc., please understand that I have changed the batteries on my two Gear S3s, and I currently get almost four days of use from each. Of course, I could charge every night as I do with my phone - but I like not having to worry about battery life and fewer cycles means longer overall battery life. I must admit I like the chunkier look of my Gear S3, the wider bands (of which I have several extras), and the available apps and watch faces (I mostly use my watch for notifications, taking calls when on the bike, and Samsung Pay). Speaking of Samsung Pay, don't forget the Gear S3 has MST - which still comes in handy when NFC tap fails. I didn't upgrade to the original Galaxy Watch, as I saw no advantage to doing so, nor with the GW3. I was really looking forward to the GW4 - but not gonna lie, with the daintier look of the 'Classic,' those cheap skinny bands, the mediocre battery life, and the lack of functionality in Canada, I'm having a hard time making the case for it. Your thoughts?
I can't comment on upgrading, but BP and ECG work fine on Canadian models. You just have to install a modified version of Samsung Health Monitor on both the watch and your phone. Measuring BP requires access to a cuff-based BP machine for initial calibration.
As for battery life, I have turned off things like always on display and lift to wake, but keep the sensors on constantly and can squeeze out roughly 3 days use. I could probably get it up to 4 days by disabling other features infrequently used, but that will depend on your needs.
I was really on the fence with all the reported bugs. I just found an open box deal at BB for $249+tax for the GW4 44mm (fka Active). Yes, BB Canada! I have an old S3 Frontier but it got slow so I moved onto the Active and I liked it better on the wrist, especially for running.
Anyway, no brainer at that price.

Thanks, I'm actually eyeing Best Buy's current deal of $100 off if you trade in any working smartwatch. Of course, I would not trade my Gear S3 Frontier for that price, so I grabbed a cheapo smartwatch on AliExpress for about $10. Even so, my Frontier still works fine, battery is great, and it does what I need it to do - so I'm still struggling to justify the expense.
You can prob sell your Gear S3 for more than $100 on Kijiji...

Thanks, that's what I thought - which is a shame, as I like the Gear S3 charger better.
While I'm not in Canada I still have the same issues with BP and ECG not working because I do not have a Samsung phone. As TacoDeMuerte mentioned this can be circumvented. I have not done so yet but I plan to. Even without those features I'm very happy with the upgrade (coming from a Galaxy Watch 1). Coming from a Gear 3 I think the Watch4 Classic gives you the pros of:
Being "daintier". I know this does not seem like a positive to you but for me it is. Less issues with long sleeve shirts hanging up with watch. Less issues with putting backpacks on, etc. The Galaxy Watch 1 is very similar in size to the Gear 3. With the Watch 1 I always had these issues. I'm very much liking the Watch4 being a bit slimmer and smaller than my Watch 1 (and lighter).
Bluetooth 5.0 vs. 4.2. More data and further range. I do not use wifi on Watch4 (or previously on Watch1) so this is a big deal for me. The distance I have been from phone with Watch4 and still getting notifications is crazy.
16GB 1.5GB RAM vs. 4GB 768MB RAM
Exynos W920 (5 nm) vs. Exynos 7 Dual 7270 (14 nm). I imagine this watch is significantly more responsive than the Gear 3.
Bigger and higher res screen. 1.4" (450x450) vs 1.3" (360 x 360).
More water resistant. 50m vs. 1.5 m.
Corning Gorilla Glass DX vs. Corning Gorilla Glass SR+
Better GPS: A-GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, BDS vs. just GLONASS.
Android Wear OS, One UI Watch 3 vs. Tizen. There is still a lot that needs to be worked out here but ultimately I think this will be a pro.
Cons:
Clearly battery time. I was getting 4+ days with my Watch 1. With Watch4 I'm typically getting 2+ days. I have had over 3 days on 2 charges but I was not very active. I have had less than 2 days on only 2 occasions. While this is a bummer I have adjusted. Would I trade a thicker Watch4 with more battery time for the current watch? Probably not . I'm fine with battery time. I'm not streaming music to my watch though.
No MST though I have never used the Samsung Pay feature so this does not impact me.

Thanks so much for this, @fliptwister, really appreciate the effort you put into this, and I think you sum up the pros and cons very well! I agree with each of your points and, with respect to MST, as I mentioned in a separate post, I'm thinking its loss may not be so bad after all, as I have a theory that MST may actually be contributing to some of those point-of-sale tap fails. In any event, I think on balance you're right, so now I'm looking at taking advantage of the current discount on offer at Best Buy ($100 off with trade in) as well as selling one of my Gear S3s for a GW4 Classic 46mm. Thanks again!

Very possible, I had the gear s3 classic 45mm and went to the regular GW4 44mm. I didn't bother opening the new charger when I saw it was identical in size/shape/design. Theyre the exact same charger for me, are your two chargers diffferent in any way?
Edit: I checked and the model number on the back of the 2 chargers are the exact same. EP-OR825

I think you might be referring to the Galaxy Watch 3 charger? The Gear S3 charger is a completely different (and better, IMHO) beast.
