First Smart Watch or Upgrading

With the latest round of smart watches launching now or coming soon, I am curious as to what type of people are buying the latest products. Since this is in the Samsung Gear S3 forum, I would imagine most, if not all of you, are interested in Samsung's latest offering. So my question is are you upgrading to this watch or would this be your first smart watch?
I currently have the first gen Moto 360. What drew me to the Moto 360 is the fact that it had a circular screen and Android Wear intrigued me. I've been happy with the Moto 360, but it is starting to show its age. I didn't think I would consider the Samsung Gear S3, but the looks and 3-4 days battery life definitely peaked my interest. I am not 100% sold on the Tizen OS yet, but from what I have seem so far there is a very good chance this will be my next smart watch.

I have also the Gear S (first) it say also 3 or 4 day but in reality more one day than ..... or more if you do not use the watch

I get a full day with Screen always on with my S2. The S3 should give a few hours beyond that.

I would be upgrading from a Gear S2 3G. I like the Gear S3's design better and its improvements to AOD. Also, the inclusion of Samsung Pay MST.
With Always-on activated from 6 am to 11 pm, I finish the day with about 35% battery left. The Gear S3 should be even better.

My Huawei watch is at 50-60% by the time I put it on the charger about midnight each night. I wear it from 7am until midnight. So pretty darn good battery. I am interested in the GS3 because it seems to be more on the premium level finally. I had bought the S2 a couple months after having the Huawei, but returned it. The reason I didn't like the S2 was the cheap feel of it compared to the Huawei and I couldn't use other apps for text/email other than stock Samsung apps. Definitely interested to gety hands on the S3. My biggest reason for wanting Samsung is the e-sim. Not having to have a phone along could be a really nice option at times.

I've stopped wearing my Moto 360 afer not seeing any benefit wearing it. Oh and the menu was also very laggy.
But I'm very interested in a new smartwatch which could replace my phone during sports with GPS and a heartrate sensor, so hardware wise the S3 seems like a good fit but the software was holding back the previous Samsung watches in the past from what I've read.
I'll probably wait for the first reviews / sofware updates and then decide if it's worth another try....or wait for the Gear Fit 3

I've been in the market for a smart watch since the first iWatch. So much so, I've debated jumping ship just to get a half-decent smart watch. I just simply couldn't justify locking myself down into a cookie cutter phone, no matter how stable and fluid it is, just for a watch. So, I've been trolling here, other sites, and all developments of wearables. When I found out the S3 is featuring MST, and that it doesn't depend on the phone to have it (Looking at you S2), I just knew I had to have it. Then with the later reported music streaming apps, a true map app for the wearable, and how sleek and casual, yet classy, the S3 is, I just KNEW I had to get it. I didn't even hesitate.
On 24 hours now with it and besides the lack of music streaming apps (December can't come fast enough. I hate spotify, but hey, streaming is streaming) and FULL support for Google Messenger (stock texting sucks ass, even more so for group messaging) i absolutely LOVE this watch. I've tried Samsung Pay, it works. It's amazing. I think it's silly you can only do 5 transactions when in standalone mode, but I can kind of understand the reasoning behind it, to a degree even though it is still silly in my eyes (security issues).
If you've thought about getting this watch for ANY reason, stop thinking about it and go get it. You will love it. I'm SO glad I waited for the s3 and didn't rush into any other wearable.

I was interested in the Gear S2 when I read it had Samsung Pay, but found out it was not MST capable so I decided against it. Then I stumbled upon the Gear S3 details and anxiously awaited until its release. Now I feel safer using it to pay because I don't have to pull out my phone or my wallet.

Have you actually triggered the 5 transaction limit? What does it say when it happens?

First smart watch and will probably return it next week for a refund as:
1. Basically it does not work as a watch as the turn on gesture is not sensitive enough. I do not want AOD as that will kill the battery and lessen the screen life / burn in.
Looking at a blank screen instead of the time is frustrating I suspect this is true for all smartwatches though with wake up gesture not just the S3.
2. Notifications are too unreliable.
3. Samsung Pay is not available in the UK - I knew this before I purchased but Samsung will not state when it will be available if ever.

This will be my third. Had a galaxy gear and currently wearing the gear 2. Still 1 week to wait here in the Netherlands.
I enjoy the notifications on my watch and don't really expect much else. So I'm easy to please

This will my 4th upgrade. I missed 2 things from the Gear S2: a speaker to let people know I'm fumbling to get my phone out; and Samsung Pay. I love how strong the vibration setting is on the S2 and hope it will be just as great on the S3.
Now what REALLY bothers me though is that this watch is completely geared for males. I don't mind the size - but goodness gracious Samsung - do we just count for nothing???? I will not rock the robust look of the Frontier. So I'm just left with a silver Classic Bluetooth only version and very masculine bands with the original order. I have the S2 in Rose Gold and a white leather band and LOVE the look!

I have not, I was merely reporting documentation I've come across.
"Make at least 5 payments on your Gear S3 without a Galaxy smartphone nearby after initial setup. Number of transactions varies by card network and bank. Reload payment capability by connecting to a Galaxy Smartphone via Bluetooth. Only compatible with select cards, carriers and Android smartphones; see the Samsung Pay Support page at www.samsung.com/us/ support/owners/app/samsung-pay#compatibility for compatibility information." Found at the bottom of this link denoted by the 2.
What this means is after you setup Samsung pay to the Gear s3, you can then depending on bank, make up to 5 or more* transactions without needing to sync your phone via bluetooth to the watch. After that, you apparently will be unable to make any more payments until the S3 is then resycned to the phone.
* denotes bank and card limitations, defaults to 5.

for the only being able to do 5 transactions with the s3 on standalone. With the phone if you have no service I believe you can only do 10 transactions. Because it stores tokens to use with s-pay, and once those are used you have to replenish them

I upgraded from the Huawei watch, to the s3. The Huawei looks plain and boring compared to it.

Started with pebble from Kickstarter, then pebble steel, then pebble time then pebble time steel.
Moved to Apple watch when I was issued an iPhone for work.
Also played with most of the FitBit range with a fit bit on one writs and either a pebble or apple watch on the other.
Recently trialling a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge phone for work and have now move the the Gear S3 Frontier as a companion

Huawei Watch 2 will launch at MWC 2017

I was hoping it would be an improved classic version of the Huawei Watch. One we could use with a suit and tie. In my opinion we already have enough sporty smartwatches.

Too sporty. That was my fear. I hope that the 1st gen at least comes down on the price. I want want but 200 bucks is my limit.

Do those pins mean that it will lack wireless charging?

The watch itself looks like LG Watch Sport with Samsung Gear S3 bezel.

Although I'm sure they'll sell plenty of these watches, I agree that the market probably doesn't need more 'sporty' smartwatches. There's plenty of them already. On the plus side, perhaps this means that Huawei will continue to manufacture, sell and support the Watch 1 as it appears it is still, in my opinion, the best looking 'classy' Android Wear watch available.

Totally agree. But regarding thickness Today I finally had the chance to see a Huawei Watch 1st gen in person and its not thicker that my Moto 360 1st generation. My main motivation to upgrade from my Moto 360 1st generation, which I paid 160 euros one year and a half ago, is looks (even though I also like the classic versus futuristic look of my Moto) but specifically battery life. Besides not having a true ambient Mode, even with it off sometimes I don't get to the end of the day with battery life and when listening to music directly from the smartwatch my battery lasts half and hour or 45min. Is the Huawei better in that department?

I've had both (360 1st gen) and now the Huawei Watch for a long time. The difference is HUGE! The Huawei Watch always out last my phone (Xperia Z3, easily the horrible S6 Edge Plus, S7 Edge and Mi Mix).
The OLED display makes it no problem to have the ambient mode activated at all times. The screen is 1,4 inch, perfect since 42mm is the biggest a wristwatch can be unless you're a rapper or a used car salesman. The dpi is still best on the market. It could be slimmer, but it's OK. Worth it for the battery life. Even if it doesn't charge at night (the charge-connection can be unstable) it usually last until I'm home from work.
Do I like it? Yes. It's easily the best smart watch on the market. The reviews saying Gear S3 or Apple Watch are very very wrong.
So I figured the only watch to eclipse the Huawei Watch would be the Huawei Watch 2... Guess not.

I've found that the estimate Huawei provides of 1.5 days to be fairly accurate. As long as I use an OLED-friendly watch face (mostly blacks), I typically have 35% power or so remaining after a long day. I'm not too sure about battery drain during music playback but I'm sure playing music over Bluetooth or via the speaker would drain the battery at a significantly faster rate.
I agree with thklinge. With the cold-forged 316L stainless steel casing, sapphire crystal and 400x400 OLED display, it's easily the best smartwatch on the market to this day.

The reviews from people who have purchased it are mixed. Everyone to seems to love the watch, fit and finish. Lots of people complaining it doesn't have MST and reducing stars on it for that reason in reviews. I mean, you must know that it doesn't have MST before you buy it, right? It was known well before release. Apparently, Best Buy lied and UPS turned it over to USPS so I will be getting it tomorrow. Luckily, I don't care about MST, I don't plan to pay from my watch, I still find it more convenient to pop my debit card into the chip reader lol. I've been behind people waving phones and apple watches over the terminals and taking way too much time. I'd rather not inconvenience those behind me for no reason.

I love it overall. I am replacing my Gear S2 with it. Already lasts longer than that is all I could hope for.

I came from using a Fitbit Ionic and while that was decent, this is just miles ahead. The biggest thing for me, as dumb as it is, I love the fact that it looks like a real watch and not a funky square. I got a stainless steel band on Amazon for around 15 bucks and it makes it look even better.

I have the Gear Fit2 Pro. I can't wait for my watch to arrive tomorrow. I know it will be a huge upgrade.

i had the frontier s3 lte and the galaxy watch now. both 46 mm.
out of the gate the new watch has a much longer battery life. the longest i had it off charge was 2 days of use. this is with all radios on, max screen brightness (10) and not disabling anything. when i put it on charge at the end of day 2 it still had 40% left. the s3 would have died a day ago.
the build quality is upped over the s3 and it looks damn good. bezel rotation seems improved over the s3.
i knew about mst well before i purchased the watch. its a bummer since i was used to it on the s3, but its not a big enough CON to keep me from purchasing it. more and more sites I go to use the newer tech anyway so its not been an issue.

Bwahahaha. Smart watches. Carry on.

:laugh::laugh: right? I got my watch today, already in love with it! Gear Fit2 Pro was nifty, but this is a whole new world!

I have the LTE 46mm version. Although it is supposed to work stand alone it requires a paired digits plan @10 bucks/mo and can only have the LTE service activated if you have a samsung S7 or better. Spent over 4 hours with store employees and T-Mobile tech support before they figured it out. IPhone LTE support will be added sometime in the future. Unfortunately I have a Note Edge (essentially a note 4) so I'm screwed as far as getting LTE activated. T-Mobile is a pain. If it can work stand alone it should be able to be activated. Other than the LTE issue I do like it.

i have the 46mm lte galaxy watch. i dont need the main phone to be with it.
the watch has its own REAL phone number. ive called people and have had people call me directly on the watch.
i had this same setup with the s3 frontier.

Couldn't they just use a demo to get you started? Like just pop your sim in a S8 set it up and switch back to a note 4 and be out the door?

80 hours in on my first charge and 52% battery left. This thing is nuts. I have wake up gestures on, NFC/Bluetooth on and brightness at 8. Its crazy good.

You would think so but apparently their demos are just that, demos. Also my sim is too large to fit so they would have to change sims. Still, you would think it would be easy enough.

I've received a delivery notification and its this I'm waiting for from Samsung - comes tomorrow. Was scheduled for 6th following pre order.

Worth Buying in Q4 2018?

Hi all! I'm about to purchase my first smartwatch ever and am in research mode. I'm in desperate need of help, and a lot of it I believe you all can help me with. The main debate is this: Gear S3 Classic or Galaxy Watch. Would you repurchase this watch if you had the same choice I'm going through?
Things I'm considering:
-I likely will be able to save $100 to $150 on the S3. I see it for $200 new on eBay right now, and Black Friday is around the corner. Meanwhile the Galaxy Watch is around $330. Is the Galaxy Watch worth the price difference? I'm not sure.
-Battery will likely be better on the bew) newer watch. Will the S3 get me a couple to a few days?
-MST being removed on the Galaxy Watch (what the heck, Samsung?) is a big deal to me, but not a complete deal breaker since I will most often have my phone anyway (Note9).
-Water resistance isn't huge to me, as I don't swim hardly ever.
-I prefer the look of the Classic S3 over all other smartwatches. Looks amazing and classy (I dress up a lot and I feel it could be worn casually as well - I'd be getting a silver metal band for it immediately).
-Likely that the S3 doesn't get supported much longer. Not updated to Tizen 4.0 and maybe never will be. Does it even matter though?
I plan on using this thing for running and workouts (plus step counting), primarily. Also for notifications and things. No gaming. No phone calls. Considering I have no experience with smartwatches, what would you all recommend? Pay under $200 for the S3 classic or get the latest and greatest for around $300 or more? Thanks for your input!
Also: I can load a bunch of music on there and play files through the Samsung music player, correct? Is the speaker decent enough to run with that as my music source? I usually run with my phone in my pocket blaring as loud as it can go.

I'll stay with my gear s3 classic. The only upgrage I've read about galaxy watch is bixby, and I don't really use bixby on the phone.
I do recommend bluetooth earphone for jogging.

I'd go with the S3 Classic.

Yeah I cannot imagine needing Bixby on my watch. So the speakers aren't very loud on the watch? I never can find BT earbuds I like. It's tough. I do want some though.
So there's nothing that'll be super outdated right soon after I buy the S3 Classic? I just usually buy the latest and greatest for phones... But I think in this case I'd be wise not to.

Unfortunately, I can't run due to the fact I haven't been able to bend my knee in almost a year and can barely walk and am off work on a leave of absence but yest the GPS seemed fairly accurate. It would always show me being at work at Amazon in Kansas City, KS when I was st work and it always shows my location when I check it. It usually only takes a couple of seconds, usually less, to find your location.

The speaker is loud enough but the quality is just for notifications.
In the matter of outdated, I've been on sony smartwatch, gear 1, gear s, some pebble, some android watches, improvement so far is amoled screen, heart rate sensors, water resistance. Hey you have it all on gear s3. Frontier is the choice if you want to leave the phone home for it have gsm so that samsung can forward sms and chats to the watch over their sever. That is if your country support esim, mine doesn't.

S3 Classic has the same feature as the Frontier. Both have the same features just different looks. One is more sporty while the other is more dressy. The Frontier was too bulky looming for me so I went with the classic as it is not as bulky and has nice black leather watch band and goes nicely with a casual wear, a suit, or jeans and a t-shirt. And it looks like a traditional wrist watch.

The Frontier was too bulky looming for me so I went with the classic as it is not as bulky and has nice black leather watch band and goes nicely with a casual wear, a suit, or jeans and a t-shirt. And it looks like a traditional wrist watch.

The dressy look is what I'm thrilled about. The new generation doesn't appeal to me because of the lack of "classic" look.

I bought a used S3 frontier for 90 dollars on swappa. Best deal for this awesome watch.

if i were you, i won't purchase any smart watch but some decent real watch ..IMO its just a gimmick, this technology dont have future, i was excited to buy this gear s3 frontier but all in vain, battery life is worse ,scratch all over the bezel,
after a while bezel start loosen up.. stain or (i don't know what to say) in glass and many more problem...

This technology has no future? I have a feeling you're going to feel silly about that comment in 20 years. ?
I have a really nice Bulova watch already. It doesn't track my steps, give me my notifications while I'm in a meeting, running, or teaching. It doesn't track my runs for me and play music to my Bluetooth headphones while I'm out without my phone. I'm not sure what you wanted from your smartwatch... But if a normal watch is a suitable replacement for you, then I'd say you bought the smartwatch for the wrong reasons.

To each their own. I was against the entire smartwatch (for the PRICE). Once the G3 came down to what I considered a reasonable level late spring this year, I bought one. After wearing it to work all week, NOW I get it. Being able to see the notifications, for me, without pulling the phone out of my belt clip, is reason enough. Battery life for me is about 2 days, plus 20%. As far as scratched bezels and things like that, I'm one of those careful types that takes their watch off before
doing any work, or something that might otherwise damage it. I did the same with my non smart casio watches over the
years as well.

If you just wanted to know the time, yes, buy ordinary time showing watches.
Want to exercise, buy fitness tracker.
Smartwatches is in between time showing watch and fitness tracker, more about notification on sight. I don't want to open my phone just to read unnecessary chat that I don't wanted to reply.

I bought the 4xl for a friend and setting it up for him. He also wants a watch that is fully compatible and has great battery.
I understand phones but know nothing about watches. Please help.

I'm a Fossil Gen 5 running Wear OS owner and my wife is a FitBit Versa 1 owner. My Gen 5 for sure is smartwatch as it's main priority so it's definitely more feature full in terms of interactions with notifications. My wife loves how I can reply with either voice to text, drawing or selecting an emoji, or swiping to type a message on a little keyboard. However, the battery life is definitely a daily charge especially if you sleep track. I top it off in the morning and before going to sleep. Her Versa 1 is much more limited in smartwatch functions but does have a better minimum 4-5+ day battery.
I would say a Wear OS device with good battery is the TicWatch Pro with 4G/LTE. It's actually the same price as the Fossil but has the option for 4G/LTE, larger screen, and has a second, low battery usage screen that extends it's like to 2+ days depending on usage. I would say the downside is the design but that's personal preference and it's got an older processor. Don't get the non-4G/LTE version of the TicWatch Pro because it has only 512MB compared to 1GB and it makes a big difference for performance.
Samsung's are pretty good and run their own Tizen OS but I hear you only get the most out of them with Samsung phones. Not 100% sure.
I believe all these devices have Black Friday deals going on right now so make sure he chooses sooner than later.

Depending what He wants you can also look at Fitbit.
Mine shows time, heart rate and sleep besides the usual walking running etc and are cheaper and have longer battery life then some of the more expensive ones.

Ran into issues with LTE on my Galaxy Active Watch 2 and the Pixel 4 XL.
Besides that, my battery life has suffered while on the watch. I used to average a decent 6 hours of SoT, it's down to about 5 now when I've got a notification heavy day. ymmv

I have Garmin Fenix 5x. 12 to 14 days between charges.
Garmin has bunch of smart watches for active people. It's function as smart watch is limited, but you get all the notification. Which was all i needed

I own both Samsung Gear Sport and Fitbit Versa 2. If you want fast smartwatch with a lots of features, go with Samsung smartwatches (but battery life will be ~2 days, 3 days if you turn off always on display).
If you are okay with some less functionality and great battery life, go with Versa 2 (I get around 5 days battery life with 24 hr use, except removing for an hour or so in a day, I dont turn on always on display which reduces battery life by 1.5 days)

I have the Galaxy Watch Active 2 44mm, my wife as the 40mm. Both are Bluetooth/WiFi models. The 44mm gets ~3 days of battery life, the 40mm gets just over a day. I've never really seen the appeal of paying for LTE on a watch if I always have my phone on me.

I got amazfit bip watch and it lasts about 30 days battery per charge.

I have a Fossil Q Explorist 4 HR. I love it. It looks like a nice watch, so I wear it to the office and pretty much whatever. I also use it at the gym. It has a bigger screen that a lot of smartwatches, which I have to have. The others are just to small for me to read them well. I've also had the Samsung Gear S2 and S3. I liked them, but dealing with Samsung support is the worst, so I had to move away from them. I ALMOST bought a Fossil gen 5 when they were on sale last week. But, I can't justify $200+ per year on smartwatches. Anyway, can't go wrong with Fossil. I also prefer WearOS to Samsung's Tizen and the Fitbit OS (my wife has the Blaze).

Don't buy anything without 1 gig of memory, the fellow above had it right, performance is vastly better than anything with less. As to the GUI wear plays out similarly in use across all devices so it isn't really a factor. If it's me I go with the Gen 5 Fossil and I say that having had both it and the TicWatch. Both these watches have a few value adds that the other does not but the main difference is battery life, you'll go further on the Gen 5 without invoking various battery saving features that turn your smartwatch into a not so smartwatch. Realistically a smartwatch that isn't smart isn't much of a smartwatch so I don't put much value on the super duper battery savings features, if I did I'd go back to the TicWatch. It can run for quite some time based on reviews, I can neither confirm or deny in that regard, I have never used said features on any of my smartwatches.

I had the Fossil gen 5 and oh did it suck. I thought it was supposed to be the answer for a good Wear OS watch. I took it back and got the Galaxy watch. I'm so damn happy now. I really wanted the Google Assistant but it's not worth all the drawbacks of Wear OS watch.

Galaxy Watch Active 2 battery life is amazing. I put it on the wireless charger when brushing my teeth or taking a shower, and I don't think I have ever fallen below 40%. I let it track sleep, and all my workouts. It just keeps doing its job, while sipping on the juice. I wish android wear devices were this efficient. I miss my Sony Smartwatch 3's Google Assistant and Maps integration, but I don't miss dreading if it is going to die on me. I blame Qualcomm for not innovating on the hardware front, as the the android wear hardware sucks so bad. If they had just kept pace with Samsung and Apple, I wouldn't have switched.

Love the Amazfit GTR. 50 days battery life for me. Cannot ever own Samsung, Fitbit or any other watch. Perfect watch for me

Are there any upcoming smart watches to be on the lookout for in the next few months?

Galaxy watch 2 active here, all working great on my pixel 4 xl. Only issue is that I had to install the esim on it using my work phone (Galaxy A3). Battery life is great, streams all my playlists from Spotify over 4g, sport tracking seams to be pretty accurate also.
