I'm planning to buy a smart watch and I had two options... The Apple Watch and the Samsung Gear S2.
I've been a Samsung fan all my life despite the hiccups that you see every now and then.
After looking at some reviews I decided to go for the S2, BUT!... The fact that the watch doesn't have a speaker came like a shock to me. I don't want to use it to make calls from the watch itself, but I'm talking about notification sounds, alarms, etc... That when I started checking the 3G version of the S2 (which has a built-in speaker) but I can't find an international new one on Amazon.
When I checked Samsung's site, I found that the 3G version is sold by either Verizon, T-Mobile, or AT&T.
I don't live in the U.S. and in my country, the eSim is not supported yet but honestly I don't care about having an independent watch that can make calls without a phone. It would be nice to be able to accept/decline calls from the watch and then use the phone though.
Now that you heard my story, I want to know what to do to get a Gear S2 that has a speaker?

Hey there! What phone do you have? If you have an iPhone, I suggest a product from the same company as the device. It's more expensive, but it will work perfectly. But if you have an Android phone, then I suggest the Gear S2 bluetooth, the Huawei Watch or the Moto 360 2gen. It doesn't have a speaker, but the vibration is pretty strong. I personally have a Samsung Gear S2 Bluetooth with a Galaxy S7 and it works perfectly. Also note that if you have an Android phone, you can't use the Apple Watch. Gear S2 is, I would say, for the sportier person. Apple Watch is for the more calm and "elegant" person. Also note that you have to get the 3G Gear S2 from a carrier, because it doesn't have a sim slot, but an integrated non-removable E-Sim, which is kind of a smaller chip than a normal Sim card.
So in the end, ios=Apple Watch and Android=Gear S2/Moto 360 2gen/Huawei Watch. I would highly suggest the Moto 360 2nd generation because you can customize it on Moto Maker. Also be aware that the Moto and Huawei run Android Wear whilst the Gear S2 runs Tizen. There are limitations though. If you want a Gear S2, you need Android 4.4.4 or higher and more than 1.5GB of RAM. If you want an Apple Watch though, it doesn't really do much. Also, Apple Watch runs Watch OS 2.

Please note that if you have an iPhone and wish to purchase an Apple Watch, You will need an iPhone 5 or higher. If you have an iPhone 4/4s/3/3gs/1, tough luck because it's not compatible. Sorry.

I have a galaxy s5 and I'm planning to maybe upgrade to s7 in the near future (I'm also thinking about the iPhone 7 when it is released) that is why I wana choose the watch first then decide what phone I will buy later.
Since you have a Gear S2, I need to ask you some questions that I hope you have the answers to...
1- I heard that there is a problem that occurs sometimes with daily alarms. Sometimes it won't go off, did that happen to you?
2- Same thing for apps notifications, sometimes it doesn't work on the watch.
3- Can you accept/decline calls in the Bluetooth version then use your phone or a Bluetooth headset to speak?
4- If I get the 3G version somehow while I don't live in the U.S., am I going to be able to use it normally or I'm gonna have troubles with un-needed payments and stuff like that?

Hello again! If you have a Gear S2 with a Galaxy S5, it will work fine. Now, the alarms and notifications will work but you won't be able to visualize everything on your watch, so be aware that you will need to view most of the notifications on your phone. For example, if you have instagram or a social media account (twitter, facebook, ect..) it will say that you have a new notification. If, however, you get a text message (Whatsapp, messenger, hangouts, viber, ect..), you will be able to respond to it with emoticons, pre loaded quick messages or using a classic T9 keyboard (I prefer the T9). The main issue here is the calling. If you do not have a bluetooth headset, you won't be able to recieve or make calls. If you choose the previous Gear (Samsung Gear S), you will be able to insert a nano sim into the watch itself (it has a slot at the back) and make calls, browse the internet or even play games. It's practically a mini smartphone. Anyways, coming back to our Gear S2, if you get the 3G model without contract, you will probably be able to use it bluetooth, but I'm not sure about the calling feature...
Don't get the Apple Watch, but consider the Moto 360 2nd generation. It's roughly the same price but comes with Android Wear. But if you really want a Samsung wearable, consider the Gear S too. It's got a bigger screen, a bigger battery and a speaker so you can make calls. The only con here is that it costs a bit more than the Gear S2, but it has more features. If you want more features but more bulk, get the Gear S. If you want design, lightness but no calling, get the Gear S2. Always consider the Moto 360 2.

Please also note that the Gear S3 will be launched in September, so look out for that too. That has 3G connectivity, GPS and Samsung Pay. If you want the Gear S2, it's a pretty good smartwatch, but the Gear S3 has more to offer. You can also make calls with the S3.
Also, it comes in 2 variants: Samsung Gear S3 Classic and Samsung Gear S3 Frontier. I would get the frontier, because it has 3G connectivity.

With the latest round of smart watches launching now or coming soon, I am curious as to what type of people are buying the latest products. Since this is in the Samsung Gear S3 forum, I would imagine most, if not all of you, are interested in Samsung's latest offering. So my question is are you upgrading to this watch or would this be your first smart watch?
I currently have the first gen Moto 360. What drew me to the Moto 360 is the fact that it had a circular screen and Android Wear intrigued me. I've been happy with the Moto 360, but it is starting to show its age. I didn't think I would consider the Samsung Gear S3, but the looks and 3-4 days battery life definitely peaked my interest. I am not 100% sold on the Tizen OS yet, but from what I have seem so far there is a very good chance this will be my next smart watch.

3 or 4 days battery life but with screen Off like all other wear watch no ?
I have also the Gear S (first) it say also 3 or 4 day but in reality more one day than ..... or more if you do not use the watch
I get a full day with Screen always on with my S2. The S3 should give a few hours beyond that.

I would be upgrading from a Gear S2 3G. I like the Gear S3's design better and its improvements to AOD. Also, the inclusion of Samsung Pay MST.
With Always-on activated from 6 am to 11 pm, I finish the day with about 35% battery left. The Gear S3 should be even better.

My Huawei watch is at 50-60% by the time I put it on the charger about midnight each night. I wear it from 7am until midnight. So pretty darn good battery. I am interested in the GS3 because it seems to be more on the premium level finally. I had bought the S2 a couple months after having the Huawei, but returned it. The reason I didn't like the S2 was the cheap feel of it compared to the Huawei and I couldn't use other apps for text/email other than stock Samsung apps. Definitely interested to gety hands on the S3. My biggest reason for wanting Samsung is the e-sim. Not having to have a phone along could be a really nice option at times.

I've stopped wearing my Moto 360 afer not seeing any benefit wearing it. Oh and the menu was also very laggy.
But I'm very interested in a new smartwatch which could replace my phone during sports with GPS and a heartrate sensor, so hardware wise the S3 seems like a good fit but the software was holding back the previous Samsung watches in the past from what I've read.
I'll probably wait for the first reviews / sofware updates and then decide if it's worth another try....or wait for the Gear Fit 3
I've been in the market for a smart watch since the first iWatch. So much so, I've debated jumping ship just to get a half-decent smart watch. I just simply couldn't justify locking myself down into a cookie cutter phone, no matter how stable and fluid it is, just for a watch. So, I've been trolling here, other sites, and all developments of wearables. When I found out the S3 is featuring MST, and that it doesn't depend on the phone to have it (Looking at you S2), I just knew I had to have it. Then with the later reported music streaming apps, a true map app for the wearable, and how sleek and casual, yet classy, the S3 is, I just KNEW I had to get it. I didn't even hesitate.
On 24 hours now with it and besides the lack of music streaming apps (December can't come fast enough. I hate spotify, but hey, streaming is streaming) and FULL support for Google Messenger (stock texting sucks ass, even more so for group messaging) i absolutely LOVE this watch. I've tried Samsung Pay, it works. It's amazing. I think it's silly you can only do 5 transactions when in standalone mode, but I can kind of understand the reasoning behind it, to a degree even though it is still silly in my eyes (security issues).
If you've thought about getting this watch for ANY reason, stop thinking about it and go get it. You will love it. I'm SO glad I waited for the s3 and didn't rush into any other wearable.

I was interested in the Gear S2 when I read it had Samsung Pay, but found out it was not MST capable so I decided against it. Then I stumbled upon the Gear S3 details and anxiously awaited until its release. Now I feel safer using it to pay because I don't have to pull out my phone or my wallet.

Have you actually triggered the 5 transaction limit? What does it say when it happens?
First smart watch and will probably return it next week for a refund as:
1. Basically it does not work as a watch as the turn on gesture is not sensitive enough. I do not want AOD as that will kill the battery and lessen the screen life / burn in.
Looking at a blank screen instead of the time is frustrating I suspect this is true for all smartwatches though with wake up gesture not just the S3.
2. Notifications are too unreliable.
3. Samsung Pay is not available in the UK - I knew this before I purchased but Samsung will not state when it will be available if ever.
This will be my third. Had a galaxy gear and currently wearing the gear 2. Still 1 week to wait here in the Netherlands.
I enjoy the notifications on my watch and don't really expect much else. So I'm easy to please

This will my 4th upgrade. I missed 2 things from the Gear S2: a speaker to let people know I'm fumbling to get my phone out; and Samsung Pay. I love how strong the vibration setting is on the S2 and hope it will be just as great on the S3.
Now what REALLY bothers me though is that this watch is completely geared for males. I don't mind the size - but goodness gracious Samsung - do we just count for nothing???? I will not rock the robust look of the Frontier. So I'm just left with a silver Classic Bluetooth only version and very masculine bands with the original order. I have the S2 in Rose Gold and a white leather band and LOVE the look!

I have not, I was merely reporting documentation I've come across.
"Make at least 5 payments on your Gear S3 without a Galaxy smartphone nearby after initial setup. Number of transactions varies by card network and bank. Reload payment capability by connecting to a Galaxy Smartphone via Bluetooth. Only compatible with select cards, carriers and Android smartphones; see the Samsung Pay Support page at www.samsung.com/us/ support/owners/app/samsung-pay#compatibility for compatibility information." Found at the bottom of this link denoted by the 2.
What this means is after you setup Samsung pay to the Gear s3, you can then depending on bank, make up to 5 or more* transactions without needing to sync your phone via bluetooth to the watch. After that, you apparently will be unable to make any more payments until the S3 is then resycned to the phone.
* denotes bank and card limitations, defaults to 5.

for the only being able to do 5 transactions with the s3 on standalone. With the phone if you have no service I believe you can only do 10 transactions. Because it stores tokens to use with s-pay, and once those are used you have to replenish them

I upgraded from the Huawei watch, to the s3. The Huawei looks plain and boring compared to it.
Started with pebble from Kickstarter, then pebble steel, then pebble time then pebble time steel.
Moved to Apple watch when I was issued an iPhone for work.
Also played with most of the FitBit range with a fit bit on one writs and either a pebble or apple watch on the other.
Recently trialling a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge phone for work and have now move the the Gear S3 Frontier as a companion
I have been receiving lots of comments around which what you should buy. The Classic which seems more formal or the frontier which seems more casual. Well in this video I will review them both and show you how a Classic can be sporty and a Frontier can be all about business.

Nice review. Where did you get that watch face for the frontier? I found it on the watchland app i downloaded from the play store but I can't send to my watch as i cant seem to find the gear app.
Classic is extremely boring. Samsung has really strange design strategy. In previous generation was exactly the same - classic was simply awful and sport was the only one reasonable choice.

While I completely disagree The Classic looks great. The Frontier is nice, but the s2 sport looked like crap
I couldn't decided and just got both but would also be interested in getting the Asus Zenwatch 3 - if it ever surfaces here in the UK ??

My Frontier got sent to the wrong address I'm still waiting for Samsung shop to sort this out and get my watch transferred to my local UKmail depot
I went with the Froniter because I have the Gear S that has it own number I have it own my account so I'm going to use it!!!!

I just completed a review of 15 italian leather bands and a few steel and ceramic ones for the frontier and classic. All I can say is that its going to get pricey! all the options you have to change the watch up are awesome. Just check out my channel and you will see the others. I also expect a shipment of barton bands this week and clock work

Mmmm. There are ceramics and ceramics. I was surprised to see you write about such a band as in general to purchase a half decent ceramic watch band would cost more than the Gear S3. Ceramic watches and bands are notoriously difficult to produce then shape and polish. Sure they are certainly more scratch resistant BUT the pay of is they are much more brittle and will shatter or fracture if dropped. I would think for the price you mentioned the quality of the ceramics will be greatly compromised. I would suggest keeping with the SS at those prices.
Your Rado is indeed an old watch and they pioneered the use of ceramics in the horology world. Are you sure your Rado is only 20 years old?

Gear S3 Frontier has the most beautiful design.
Don't buy an android wear smartwatch. They have horrible battery life & extra LAG. I've tested Huawey Watch and it's horrible. You have to restart it over time because will not work properly. Also the battery life is very poor.
Also I tested the Moto v1 and the battery life is somewhere at a half of a day.
So I've had a Huawei watch since the end of June, and I love it. I just picked up a Gear S3 Classic yesterday, mainly because I was able to get it for $249. Despite the slightly smaller screen and lower resolution, i love how vivid the Gear S3 screen is.
I keep hearing people complain about the lack of apps for the Gear S3, and how it didn't really live up to their expectations as a whole. If you had the option, would you keep the Gear S3, or stick with the Huawei?

I really don't use many apps. I'm just sort of bummed i can't use Watchmaker Premium for faces anymore.
I also own the Huawei watch and I'm very pleased with it.
But I've also ordered the Frontier (different design to the Huawei...), because of the rotating bezel and to test Tizen

Maybe, it's possible to fix that by manipulating the build.prop, or similar in the phone, but I don't know, which parameters will be checked by Samsung GearApp for that
I have a Black Huawei since ordering it upon release last year. Walked to a TMo store and got a Frontier the weekend it released. Haven't worn the Huatch since.
I've owned 3 android wear watches, the original square Samsung, the 1st gen 360 and the Huatch. Android wear has not evolved much, and from the 2.0 bits we've seen so far it may not really. It's mostly been meh for me. I've owned all Pebbles and had 5 SPOT smartwatches (anyone remember those?). The Gear S3 wins hands down for me, in usability and watch-iness.
The bezel interaction is the best way to handle things (pun intended).Seriously, Samsung nailed it with this one. No swipe swipe or friggin 'digital crown' silliness.
Just a useable, great and practical UI. Don't care too much about lots of Apps. But Samsung Pay with MST paired with a non-Samsung V20, is the icing on the cake for me.

I'm very interesting by your feedback because i actually got the Huawei classic for 200€ and Monday I will be able to have the Gear S3 for 300€ + a free band.
The main point is : I have an iPhone 6S.
And actually it's impossible to use the standalone mode on the Huawei Classic (no apps available if you have an iPhone). So I want to get refund for the Huawei and buy the Samsung Gear S3 classic since it looks more beautiful and samsung is investing in iPhone App more than Android with AW2.0 and it's look more compatible.
Do you think it's a good idea ? Or should i abandon and wait for a good price for the Apple watch ?

I had the original gear S I Liked it, then I went from that to the Huawei Watch, I liked it but didn't care to much fro android wear. I now have the Gear S3 and I am loving it.

Its a personal choice that no one else can make for you.. I learned 50 years ago when I got into watches you should buy what 'speaks' to you. In the world of horology their are millions of variations. Not so many smart watches but there is a choice. I didn't think I would like Tizen but after owning the S2 I would never return to Android nor Apple OS
I am sure you will enjoy whatever you purchase but be aware that nothing is perfect, there are always trade offs

I own both. Love the Huawei watch for all its features and that I can choose any apps to be my default email and text, plus a lot more as the watch is the best Androidwear IMO. However, since I bought the Gear S3 I've only worn my Huawei once... And that was whole the S3 was charging. I like them both. If I could combine the two of them I would have all the features I'm looking for.
Now that I've experienced Samsung Pay on the Gear S3, I don't think I'll ever consider any other watch brands. The Gear S3 has been the perfect smartwatch for me. Great looks & design along with the cool rotating bezel, all the apps I need from a watch (voice reminders, calculator, weather, timer, notes, phone, messaging, music control), switchable bands, & Samsung Pay. Definite home run from Samsung!

Are you using yours with a Nexus or Pixel? I'm planning on picking it up today and pairing with my Pixel. Just wondering what the experience is.

Good memory! But I no longer have any Nexus phones. Sold them already & I skipped the Pixel. I'm down to just one phone ATM, the GS7E.

Owned a Gear s2 until last week I got the Huawei watch. So far loving how AW handles WhatsApp notifications that I use a lot; that was kinda messy on the s2. Miss the rotating bezel but so far I like the Huawei watch better. More customization; better battery life and while it's subjective; for me at least better looks

So I bought a Huawei Watch used and cheap. Used it for about an hour and ran back to the Gear S3 so fast.
As annoyed as I am at the lack of continuity when pairing it with the Pixel XL it's just simply a superior product, and Tizen is much better than the mess that is Android Wear. The S8 suddenly looks enticing in a couple months.

Hi all! I'm about to purchase my first smartwatch ever and am in research mode. I'm in desperate need of help, and a lot of it I believe you all can help me with. The main debate is this: Gear S3 Classic or Galaxy Watch. Would you repurchase this watch if you had the same choice I'm going through?
Things I'm considering:
-I likely will be able to save $100 to $150 on the S3. I see it for $200 new on eBay right now, and Black Friday is around the corner. Meanwhile the Galaxy Watch is around $330. Is the Galaxy Watch worth the price difference? I'm not sure.
-Battery will likely be better on the bew) newer watch. Will the S3 get me a couple to a few days?
-MST being removed on the Galaxy Watch (what the heck, Samsung?) is a big deal to me, but not a complete deal breaker since I will most often have my phone anyway (Note9).
-Water resistance isn't huge to me, as I don't swim hardly ever.
-I prefer the look of the Classic S3 over all other smartwatches. Looks amazing and classy (I dress up a lot and I feel it could be worn casually as well - I'd be getting a silver metal band for it immediately).
-Likely that the S3 doesn't get supported much longer. Not updated to Tizen 4.0 and maybe never will be. Does it even matter though?
I plan on using this thing for running and workouts (plus step counting), primarily. Also for notifications and things. No gaming. No phone calls. Considering I have no experience with smartwatches, what would you all recommend? Pay under $200 for the S3 classic or get the latest and greatest for around $300 or more? Thanks for your input!
Also: I can load a bunch of music on there and play files through the Samsung music player, correct? Is the speaker decent enough to run with that as my music source? I usually run with my phone in my pocket blaring as loud as it can go.
I'll stay with my gear s3 classic. The only upgrage I've read about galaxy watch is bixby, and I don't really use bixby on the phone.
I do recommend bluetooth earphone for jogging.
I'd go with the S3 Classic.

Yeah I cannot imagine needing Bixby on my watch. So the speakers aren't very loud on the watch? I never can find BT earbuds I like. It's tough. I do want some though.
So there's nothing that'll be super outdated right soon after I buy the S3 Classic? I just usually buy the latest and greatest for phones... But I think in this case I'd be wise not to.

Unfortunately, I can't run due to the fact I haven't been able to bend my knee in almost a year and can barely walk and am off work on a leave of absence but yest the GPS seemed fairly accurate. It would always show me being at work at Amazon in Kansas City, KS when I was st work and it always shows my location when I check it. It usually only takes a couple of seconds, usually less, to find your location.

The speaker is loud enough but the quality is just for notifications.
In the matter of outdated, I've been on sony smartwatch, gear 1, gear s, some pebble, some android watches, improvement so far is amoled screen, heart rate sensors, water resistance. Hey you have it all on gear s3. Frontier is the choice if you want to leave the phone home for it have gsm so that samsung can forward sms and chats to the watch over their sever. That is if your country support esim, mine doesn't.

S3 Classic has the same feature as the Frontier. Both have the same features just different looks. One is more sporty while the other is more dressy. The Frontier was too bulky looming for me so I went with the classic as it is not as bulky and has nice black leather watch band and goes nicely with a casual wear, a suit, or jeans and a t-shirt. And it looks like a traditional wrist watch.

The dressy look is what I'm thrilled about. The new generation doesn't appeal to me because of the lack of "classic" look.
I bought a used S3 frontier for 90 dollars on swappa. Best deal for this awesome watch.
if i were you, i won't purchase any smart watch but some decent real watch ..IMO its just a gimmick, this technology dont have future, i was excited to buy this gear s3 frontier but all in vain, battery life is worse ,scratch all over the bezel,
after a while bezel start loosen up.. stain or (i don't know what to say) in glass and many more problem...

This technology has no future? I have a feeling you're going to feel silly about that comment in 20 years. ?
I have a really nice Bulova watch already. It doesn't track my steps, give me my notifications while I'm in a meeting, running, or teaching. It doesn't track my runs for me and play music to my Bluetooth headphones while I'm out without my phone. I'm not sure what you wanted from your smartwatch... But if a normal watch is a suitable replacement for you, then I'd say you bought the smartwatch for the wrong reasons.

To each their own. I was against the entire smartwatch (for the PRICE). Once the G3 came down to what I considered a reasonable level late spring this year, I bought one. After wearing it to work all week, NOW I get it. Being able to see the notifications, for me, without pulling the phone out of my belt clip, is reason enough. Battery life for me is about 2 days, plus 20%. As far as scratched bezels and things like that, I'm one of those careful types that takes their watch off before
doing any work, or something that might otherwise damage it. I did the same with my non smart casio watches over the
years as well.

If you just wanted to know the time, yes, buy ordinary time showing watches.
Want to exercise, buy fitness tracker.
Smartwatches is in between time showing watch and fitness tracker, more about notification on sight. I don't want to open my phone just to read unnecessary chat that I don't wanted to reply.
