[LWP] Bee Bro! interactive live cartoon wallpaper (free, 0 ads, IAPs & permissions)
Hey, XDA,
I'm making my first live wallpaper, which is basically my animation & humor playground. Today it is in very early stages & has only a couple of animations and tamagotchi-like mechanics available. I have only a single device to test it fully, so it would be amazing if anyone could try it out and give some feedback. I'm not sure how battery-eating it is, but I try to keep everything light.

Implementation: drawing on Canvas, FPS limit 24, thread sleeps when invisible, I also have idea of adding variable FPS limit if no interactions happened for a longer time.
Idea: have a funny looking, weird behaving bee creature living on the screen. At the moment it eats flowers (food) & dances in the clouds (fun). User can interact with bee & the world by simple taps (no MotionEvents planned) to plant more flowers or force bee to interact with available elements (if bee is hungry, it might disobey the taps (this needs visual feedback)).
Best suitable for kids, stoners and men-children like me, but others seem to be enjoying hilarious and surprising (first time) animations.
Possible issues: it might crash after adding to the screen, but usually restarts and works fine. Runs slow & slows down lover end devices (Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has no issues). Preview has interactions disabled for now.

Night mode!
1.02
* Fixed a preview crash
* Fixed a disappearing ground bug
IMPORTANT
1.03
* I think I managed to get battery consumption under control
* changed ground position so it wouldn't be covered by UI in some devices
1.04
* added night mode to increase battery saving options & make it easy on the eyes
* added new night-mode only interaction & animation
* made a sequence system under the hood for easier adding of more content
enjoying it!

Thank you! I just published another update with some bug fixes and important improvements on battery saving.
1.05
Bee goes to sleep if less than 10% battery is available and no animations run until charged
"sleep on pause" setting, which will put Bee Bro to sleep when wallpaper is invisible and start animations ONLY on user interaction
added sleeping animation. It's pretty cute!
Fixed one crash and one AI bug (possibly added more AI bugs while fixing)
Worth it

It's lovely to hear that! Wait until you see the end product - I have pages with incoherent scramblings of various ideas. And it will stay free forever! That being said, I hope it "pays me back" with many happy users and visibility of my Crisp Bacon game (see signature). if I'll be able to implement an ad of it to my wallpaper in a way I plan to do, I can modestly say - some "whoas" will be said out loudly. I don't think it's ever been done in a live wallpaper. But for now I'm having so much fun just doing hilarious animations and imagining that some people will definitely laugh seeing them for the first time
Really, it's a great feeling to see Bee beeing well accepted. Better than money
More bee things!
Bee Bro will enjoy if you have music playing!
Sleeping animation
Added custom FPS setting (10,20,30)

I'm making this thread coz i'm from france and so i don't have access to US comments and some of you reports me there's some troubles like the earth spinning the wrong way.
To stop polluate the "Live wallpapers" thread of the forum, i decided to open this one dedicated to this wallpaper.
Feel free to post any comments or wishes in here.
If you like my work, feel free to offer me a beer
or contribute
I want to mention the site where i grab all the maps :
http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/
and the one where i grab the realtime map :
http://www.die.net/earth/
Thanks to them !!
updated to market on 2010-02-21
-Deathstar2
-lots of bugfixes
-Customizable random map list
-Deathstar1 (also orbiting as moon around endor)
-No more loading texture in realtime map (except 1st time)
-offset planet position
-orbiting moon around earth
-crashed cached textures autofix to avoid sticky loading textures and need to remove earthrot folder by hand
-still looking for a proper way to wakeup service after the system killed it for memory, some tests in this version.
v1.2 is out:
-Fix of the realtime cloudmap+daylightmap. Be carefull with the refresh rate as each update consume around 70KB of datas
-kind of matrix effect on screen sliding where icons and background scroll the opposite way
-add an option for spinning around natural earth axis.
-maps of endor and tatooine (still looking for a decent deathstar and coruscent ones)
Features in dev :
-engine rewriting in native code linked to GLES2.0 lib + GLSL shaders for rotation
-lens flare effect
Some bitmap of stars would be nice. Maybe an option where the earth moves and the stars move at a different speed if possible.
edit: Being that this uses the GPU and not the CPU, is there less power consumption? Just curious.
i have no idea of the impact on consumption !!
i know that almost everything is sleeping when the screen is off or the globe isn't visible, but i can't tell you what's happening when you're staring at your screen
It keeps force closing on me.
Got it. Awesome! Can you do different planets?
I second the above poster's request for stars, and planets surrounding. I can only imagine how difficult this type of development is but if you made the wallpaper more of a solar system feel, with the planets spinning I'd pay good money for a wallpaper like that!
Really nice.Like it a lot.Keep up the good work.

The only request I have is for an option to automatically change from daylight to city lights based on the time of the day. Still a nice looking wallpaper.

I second all the suggestion. also please if you can, enlarge the earth size, as on Nexus one it does look small.
thanks
thanks for your feedback guys,
here's the roadmap for future updates :
-ability to grow or shrink the globe
-stars in the background
-automatic switch from daylight to night at fixed time.
-rewrite the engine to use GLSL vertex shader for rotation, and a fragment shader that do live day/night on the globe.
-more maps like europa, ganymede, jupiter, venus etc...
-redo the UVmapping at north pole which is actually crappy.
-TRY to do a complete solar system.

Hi dude
i have other idea for a live wallpaper:
Digital/analog clock with selectable background and weather included
Im not sure if im the only that hates the widgets for clocks
Bye!
good job bro!
I love it so far, but I'd like to add my wishlist:
-Scrolling to the left and right/zoom in and out (once other features are added)
-Twinkling, slightly circling stars in the background
-Moving clouds, twinkling city lights, weather effects on the earth (+100 if you can get it to interact with local weather)
-everything everyone else asked for
Bravo! Tres bonne App!
It's a very nice app! Can we have some background of stars, satelites, spaceships, international space station or something else as an option (to change from plain black)
Could we have the app switching from day to night with the clock
Could we have a size selector for the planet?
Great job anyway!
This wallpaper is SWEET!
I have one request a DONATE option!
This app is great and to continue the hard work some of us will donate.

Love the wallpaper!
Due to the complexity of animation, actions of Timester and limitations in the Android OS regarding widgets, a widget version of Timester is not possible at this time. Thank you for not asking for this again.
[update] Timester HD - the new Timester is roaming free on the market. Also www.Timester.info is live and updated.
https://market.android.com/details?id=info.timester.livewallpaper&feature=search_result
I've been looking for a nice clock for my desire ever since the sense clocks got so old for me. The market provides mostly image+clock arms widgets, so I thought of a different kind of a widget:
The main character is a very lazy hamster named Timester. This guy realized that he is somewhat overweight and unfit so he has to run the wheel. The hamster wheel turns as he reluctantly runs, which in turn engages a dynamo and all the other cogs and wheels inside. Every once in a while, Timester gets tired and goes to sleep. So when you unlock your phone you will find him sleeping but quickly getting up and getting exercise. Or he will run so fast that the wheel and hamster will seem one. Or hamster will slow so much that he needs a jolt kindly provided by the machine to resume running.
Blou_Aap was brave enough to step up to the challenge and is committed to building a great live wallpaper. In a few short days he managed to release a pre-alpha version, 0.001.
There are still a lot of features to be added, and optimizations to be implemented so please be patient with us and provide valuable feedback.

--------------------------------------------------
V 1 .03
- different app and app name, so it won't show up as an update for the old timester
- more actions
- better optimised code, running smoother
- tablet support (tested on galaxy tab) please report any issues on tab or other tablets
- people with 320x480 screens will see that timester is oversized - don't fret, there are still some adjustments for smaller screens to be done and timester hd will support 320x480 properly
--------------------------------------------------
V 0.009
- Fixed bugs for 480x854 screens
- Removed app from app drawer

Thank you. Sniffy sounds good, but I think it should say something about him being a hamster or his personality. Unless I'm missing something, sniffy is about him having a fine sense of smell, or a good instinct in finding things.
Any other ideas?
Also, could anyone tell me if this is technically possible? I'm not sure about it because I haven't seen any heavily animated widgets. I wonder if that animation would not eat up the whole CPU.
What about Andy(The Lazy Ass Hamster) Lol
Sent from my Intergalactic Supah Dupah Spaceship¡¡!!!
Is there really no one that wants to help him...
i would totally use this clock LOL
How about Sherlock ?
Reading this has my imagination running.
Some ideas:
You could have several different hamster characters to choose from. One could be lazy like you suggested, one could be a ninja, one could be a personal trainer, the list goes on.
It would be cool if there were different "cut scenes" where the hamster does different things (like you're suggesting). Cut scenes would be based on the character. The lazy hamster (maybe name it Lightning?) would have cut scenes like sleeping, peeing and looking over his shoulder at you, gnawing on one of your app icons, etc. The ninja cut scenes would be like throwing stars at the clock, doing flips, hanging on things, or hiding behind the clock peering at you, etc.
When you talked about waking up the lazy hamster did you consider being able to shake the phone to wake him up?
I have plenty more ideas where those came from. This sounds like a pretty dang funny and fun clock idea. Your art is good too (almost a little too detailed for me actually) -- did you draw the mock-ups?
Would be sweet if a good UI/widget dev would come along and pick this one up. I've been working with a dev on a game, but I don't have coding experience.

It should be technically possible since u can use a SurfaceView as a widget
so drawing the Graphics there wouldnt be a problem
it would drain the Batter though, but dont know
u have to redraw the SurfaceView every second (serveral times per secon to maintain 25+ fps)
so the animations wont appear sluggish
I could try to program it, though my Programming Experience is limited ( only worked with 2D once )
could start immediately when i get my phone back (3-4 days)
//edit after seeing the chillin' hamster a idea to safe battery life popped up
u could just redraw the clock every minute? or every 40 seconds
if a minute is about to pass by the hamster starts running to turn the wheels so the new minute Image is shown

Wow, that would be so hilarious. Please, awesome coders of XDA. Please make this happen.
EDIT: You can even do, 0:00 - 0:30 Chillin'. 0:31:040 Hangin'. 0:41-0:59 Runnin'. So it'll look like the it's getting ready.
I was inspired by the Mario live wallpaper on these forums to make something similar using the Doom sprites. I released it as a beta last week and have been constantly updating it as often as I can.
Features:
- Tapping the screen will drop a random powerup after a 5 second countdown (can be disabled in options)
- Powerups are: Medikit, Armor, Shotgun, Chaingun, Rocket Launcher, Plasma Rifle, BFG 9000
- Dragging and dropping one of your homescreen icons will spawn a random demon for the doomguy to fight (can be disabled in options)
- Enemies spawn in pre-programmed waves starting off with a small number of easy enemies and building up to large numbers of tougher demons
- Waves can be completely randomized in the options
- Maximum monsters in the random waves is adjustable from 1-25 (setting to 1 means always single monster in each wave, setting to 25 means random number of monsters between 1 and 25 will spawn)
- Adjustable animation speed and sprite size
- Statistics screen in the settings that shows number of kills, number of deaths and number of powerups collected by the doomguy
- 4 different image backgrounds will cycle. Options allow to choose your favourite and not show the others, or disable backgrounds completely which can improve performance and reduce battery drain.
- Create a sequence of custom backgrounds from images in your gallery.
- Currently features the following characters
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

- Game mode allows you to "play" the wallpaper full screen with visible health and armor and high scores.
The response has been very positive so far, it was even mentioned on the xda-developers blog, pocketnow.com and engadget.
It's free, but does contain an admob ad in the settings (same as mario live wallpaper). - This is why it requires internet permission.
I'm loving it. Great job man.

Yeah I've been thinking about adding a sort of game mode where you have more control over his movements and you can see his health + ammo. But I don't have much time to spend developing it at the moment.
I'm currently working on improving the AI so the monsters can fight each other like they do in the original Doom.
Awesome! Thanks for your work!
Awesome even on slow processors (msm7xxx)

Good job, working well on my SGS, would be nice if you could choose an image from your gallery for the background.

Just wondering though, that a boot animation like this with the android robot instead of the marine would be interesting. Anyone seen anything like that anywhere?

The only thing I can really think of is adding the BFG (along with the ability to switch doomguys weapons), more enemies, and definitely the ability to choose which color doomguy you want.

DESCRIPTION
The game of life is actually a cellular automaton devised by the mathematician John Horton Conway in 1970.
It's sort of a virtual world where many cells are living.
They reproduce and die under certain conditions.
This game does not need the player itself (kind of zero-player game), but we can make it more interactive by adding special patterns that will evolve in specific ways, or by changing the rules of the world, for instance.
The main features of my implementation are:
¤ Play / Pause / Reset / Random Buttons
¤ Changing the speed
¤ Changing the size of the world
¤ The world is shaped like a torus
¤ Changing the color:
- United
- Random
- Gradient
¤ Changing the shape of cells (11 available)
¤ Become master of the world by changing the rules:
- 12 predefined rules
- Create your own rules
¤ Library patterns (over 50):
- Oscillators
- Ships
- Guns
- Space fillers
- Other
¤ Possibility of sending patterns by email
¤ Create life or destroy it, simply by touching the screen!

Awesome idea. Just read about this game of life in a Stephen Hawkings book.
Hahaha, I just had an idea:
What about a live wallpaper? You might have to make it look nicer and less dominant, but it would be fun and kinda nerdy, if you always had those "organisms" reproducing in the background

You're not the first to tell me that.
I will start creating a live Wallpaper.
But what do you mean about "make it look nicer and less dominant" ?
I love Game Of Life.I even made a (newbie) javascript version of it... Thx for the great app! The Live Wallpaper idea is actually pretty nice. If you do it, I'll surely give it a try.
Well, right now, I would not want it as my wallpaper. It looks nice as an app, but a wallpaper should be more "beautiful" and/or simple. After all, it is supposed to be the background.
Imagine your app design with other widgets and icons over it, the whole screen would look quite overloaded. Do you get what I mean? (english ain't my native language )
But you could keep the mechanism of the app for customizing the colours and so on.
I don't even know if I would actually use it. Depends on how it will look. So, if you got other stuff to do, do that first. The wallpaper is not really a high priority for me. I just like the app and the idea itself.
Over all the game play is not much attractive but still its fine. 6/10

thanks a lot for this app'.
When would you release the LiveWallpaper ?
I'm so excited
Be patient
I'm developping it.
But it will last at least 2weeks...
Tell me what kind of feature you would like to have on this wallpaper (new features of course) or anything else.
Haha, love!! I had to program a version of this myself in my first year at university and had forgotten all about it! As others have said, would be a pretty good idea as a Live Wallpaper but would obviously need some sort of loop on there incase all the cells died or just became stable blocks... otherwise it could quickly become a rather dull wallpaper
Don't worry.
A shake or a tap will randomize or add living cells

^^, no problem, i'll keep these. For the moment I'm learning PreferencesActivity... It's the only way to modify the wallpaper.
I'll inform you of the progress.
Hi guys!
Any comments on the gameplay and level design would be great!

Update 1.0.1:
- Fixed multiple screen support: better look on mdpi screens, fullscreen mode on xlarge screens.
- Toss physics improved, now it is more responsive to fast flings. Other physical parameters have been adjusted to keep the game difficulty at the same level.
- Added gradually increasing difficulty in the arcade mode.
- Sensor levels are marked as such in the level list and show a special mark on the disc base.
- Back key returns from options and level selection menus.
- Added fly-in notifications, such as "difficulty up" and "secret unlocked". Will be used for achievements too.
- Added drum sound on level start and difficulty increase.
- Click sound removed from Stage 3.
Update 1.0.2:
- Achievements!
- Internally, more gears and levers to maintain achievements, triggers and events.
Update 1.0.3:
- Fixed achievements display for older droids (2.1 or less).
- Added features: guest mode*, move to SD.
- Level 6 renamed and simplified.
- Removed 4 boring achievements.
- Under the hood: minor bugfixes, major refactoring, full-version forward compatibility and code obfuscation.
- Content rating: low maturity
*What is guest mode?
All records, achievements and unlocks earned in the guest mode will be reverted when the mode is off again. It is useful if your friend wants to play the game, and you do not want him or her to mess up with your progress. Guest mode will be automatically switched off when game exits or can be switched on/off from the options menu.
Update 1.0.3.2:
- Removed code obfuscation because of FCs.
Update 1.0.5:
Full version RELEASE!
- Start message not displayed when level is restarted/replayed
- More Games button in Options menu linked to the Android market
- Code obfuscation fixed
- Bug fix: wall collision sound when disc has no velocity
- Bug fix: disc control after been teleported
- Other level-scripting related bugfixes
Update 1.0.5.1:
- Bug fix: level hints never displayed
Kudos! This is really fun. No issues on my Xperia X10. It is pretty hard to fling the disc quickly though. Great job!

Runs happily on my Galaxy Tab, albeit not in fullscreen. Seems to work ok, seem to need to drag the disc about a bit to build up speed, just flinging it straight out causes it to move quite slowly (as kxhawkins has observed).
Nice and simple, good to see a new twist on the Breakout theme.
Here's a live link for it:

On edit, it seems to pause and partially reload when going from portrait to landscape. Don't know if that's just my firmware/ROM though.
Thanks a lot!
The toss-physics is explainable: there is an elastic bond between the disc and the finger instead of a firm grip, you can see it while trying to "wobble" the disc. Most people are confused as they do not expect that. I probably need to do something about it.

That's a funny bug, something sneak-removed the "portrait" flag from the app's manifest lol. In the next update it'll be okay.
Update 1.0.1b
I have published an update that fixes all known bugs.
The physics has been modified too. Is it better now?
Definitely better playability with the last update!
Update 1.0.2b
Finally, the achievements are there!
They look better on Android 2.3 because of this sweet ColorFilter class that I like so much. Screenshot has been made using 2.1 on emulator, and it's still not bad, isn't it?
I think the beta will end in about a week or two. Everyone who plays Discanoid during this period will receive a unique achievement!
Enjoy!
Great game!
Works wonderful on MT4G, really cool game, thanks man!
Physics are much better. I'm still stuck on stage 6 - tap me, though. I just don't get it.
Thanks a ton, dev. Great game.

Thanks for the great game =). Had no problems with my DHD CM7.
Wasn't that easy to get behind stage 6 but after you know what to do, it is not that difficult to complete.

Try to complete the "Achievements" - it is a lot of fun too. And not easy at all

Thanks for the feedback. I will consider making this level a bit easier, and I think I need to change the name and start message. Tap-launches do not help much after the physics been updated.
Here's a hint: Disc grip has area of effect (displayed by a circle under your finger). When the disc just touches this area with its edge, it gets "sucked" in, where possible. And where impossible... well... probably that's enough to know
Updates 1.0.3b and 1.0.3.2b
I have published an update which caused lots of FCs and stressful bug-fixing time.
The problem was in ProGuard code obfuscation (which probably renamed onClick methods in the main activity class). I have temporarily removed it and re-published the update as 1.0.3.2b. Now it should work.
Sorry for the inconvenience!
It worked on my device tho... I still do not understand why. Maybe because I replaced the old version instead of fully reinstalling it.....
Thanks for the update! No force close problems in this version.

Wow! I found it quite difficult while testing.
Okay, there will be more challenge in the full version. However, my target is maximum fun, not maximum difficulty
Soon I'm gonna try update 1.0.3.3 with fixed obfuscation, and if it works, I will make a release.
Here are some sneak-peek screenshots of the full-version features I am currently working on. From left to right:
- Timer targets will explode when counter reaches 0.
- Grinders move around the levels and will shred the disc upon contact.
- Tesla towers (my favorites!) cast lightnings at a limited distance. Lightnings may hit targets and triggers through the walls; use the disc to conduct the charges.
- Breakable bricks are here to bring some real "Breakout" mood.
Release!
Full version has been released!
48 new levels, lots of cool features! 55 achievements!
