The Inactive Skyrocket Projects Thread - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

This thread is dedicated for the skyrockets no longer being used for service. The purpose of this is to see what kind of life we can give this phone other than keeping it in a drawer. as of now this does not have any original development but ideas and hopefully we will get some developments with this. please feel free to share your ideas, links and screenshots of things you may be doing with your device if it's inactive.
1. XBMC
Whether you are wanting to use the device around the house or on the tv xbmc is an awesome solution for your media needs. I have a media server in my house with dvd .iso's, music, and games all being delivered to my networked devices so one cool way to access the media is xbmc. for those of you who don't know xbmc is xbox media center it was originated for the original xbox for those who moded. It has evolved into one of the best open source multi-platform media solutions around.
I downloaded the app from here personally I'm using 13 RC1 gotham the app itself seems to be downloading as a .txt so you need to rename it to .apk before installing. once installed launch the app and any media on the device will be detected any media you have on your home network can be set up to access it by browsing to the source. The app will play most popular formats and will play .iso videos directly. If anyone runs stock firmware I'd like some input on if you can use mhl with xbmc as well as a bt mouse and keyboard giving you a decent tv experience on the cheap.

2. Child Friendly device (WIP)
For me this is going to be a proof of concept more than an actual thing. My son is 4 years old and sometimes to entertain him in public settings or if he's been good we let him play games on one of our phones for a while. this obviously has some issues since he's an evil genius and likes to tinker. I'll be using nova launcher prime for this use case. First add any apps you wish to allow the child to use to your homescreen, delete the app launcher button and hide the notification bar (set gestures as needed). make sure you hide any apps you don't want them using from the app drawer, also make sure you have play set up to ask for your password every time, alot of the free apps have links to other apps which they try and buy (trust me my son pulled it off on the wife's iphone). The pics are just a quick mock up of what you can do to handle most of the little things kids try to do. i had two finger swipe up for app drawer and down for notifications hide anything i don't want him using and I have my password set so he can't buy anything without me.

im fimiliar w/xbmc , openelec, xbmcbuntu etc. but i never tried the android version, which one did u try, the arm or x86.
btw on firefox they both dl as an apk file

I was using chrome So that may be why, arm is the one you need for the rocket.

Nice note for those at home. If you rename libril.so it kills the no sim warning and stops the cell radios. So for unused devices it will do wonders for extending battery life.

I use mine as an MP3 player/GPS. I removed all telephone/SMS/MMS related apps from vincom's superlite AOKP and get 5-6 days on a charge with 3.5-4 hours screen on time, and with GPS and Bluetooth always on. I didn't rename libril.so like you suggested but it doesn't seem to search for a signal nor does the status bar have that black triangle you get when you don't have a signal. I've been running it like this for about a month. @TheCybertronian, I think this thread is a good idea. This phone still rocks even when you don't use it as a phone anymore. Now I'm wondering what else I might be able to do with it...

@1BadWolf I was never a fan of the rockets audio quality so I used my evo 4g for mp3 but I will do a write up for it in the next few days.

No, it's not great but installing King Beatz helped it out a lot.

My plan is to build a mount for it and put in my car semi-permanently as a digital dash using Torque and a BT OBD-II adapter, and navigation using CoPilot. I also want to try using a mini BT keyboard/mouse to control it, so that could get interesting.

@rpr69 if you do id like to see you do a step by step with materials used and pictures, think you can pull that off?

Can I? Of course. Will I? I'll do my best. I'm still missing a few parts, but I'll probably start looking at it this weekend. There will be some software components as well, I'll try and list them.

I have tried installing KingBeatz (current version, test version and 2 older versions) from http://goo.gl/C83XrX (xda link just shorter). I can't seem to find it in my app drawer or in Apollo's settings. Can you give a play by play for your install method (maybe with flashable zips)? I see the Beatz app as a system app when using "System App uninstaller" from the Play Store.
I removed Apollo and DSP Manager to see if that helped, no dice. Maybe because I'm on an Avatar 4.3 rom?

I just flashed the zip posted in the thread that you linked. The app that it installed is called Beatz and is similar to DSP manager but with a few changes. You'll need to have one of the MP3 players listed in the op of the King Beatz thread, though because the zip file doesn't install a separate player.

Baby Mon/Security Cam
I realize I'm not breaking the mold here, but I've always kind of thought that I'd use it in conjunction with a IP Webcam App to serve as a security camera or possibly baby monitor if we end up with another baby. In combination with DDNS it can be used remotely and cost next to nothing to maintain.

If I get time I'll try to throw together some screenshots and walk-throughs but it's really pretty simple. The app I've used is here , it's easy enough for anyone to use and can be viewed on a browser. If you get on your router and forward the port you choose (8080 by default) to your phone's IP you can view remotely. It even has a dedicated mode, which I've not played with but is what planted the seed to begin with.

its pretty easy
1st find your phones ip address
from phone open ip webcam> start server
pc browser "put phones ip address here w/out quotes":8080
webcam browser window>video>browser or which ever method works for you
you can record, take snapshots etc

Just found this thread - good idea. Sometimes I use the SR as a backup with Magic Jack while I'm fixing whatever I was trying to do with the new one (SGS3)

Well..for those who like to play around with stuff, this phone has all the required hardware for packet injection and WiFi monitor mode. Using the bcmon app you can enable and disable monitor mode on the WiFi chip.. Cool for penetration testing and general fun. Also I was able to get Kali Linux running and on-screen viewable using linuxdeploy app and vncviewer.. Runs pretty decent. Also I agree the audio on the skyrocket is awful. I may check that kingbeatz thing out.

AirDroid... yet another like Remote Web Desktop

I'm not, by any means, a developer or affiliated with AirDroid in any way. <--- definitely advertising
I came across this app earlier today and it is honestly one of the most useful apps I've ever seen. It gives one the potential to view his or her messages, calls, contacts, files and everything else on your phone FROM YOUR PC (or Mac) WEB BROWSER. All you have to do is type in a gateway that you get once you open the app on your phone. It'll take you to a log-in screen, which precedes a "desktop" with all of your phone-everything.
One of the coolest things is that it automatically syncs anything you do within the web browser to your phone and vice-versa. I.E. this is one of the few/only app(s) that will show pictures and full contact details within the web browser. Unlike other apps, if you send or receive messages, your phone logs and conversations will also be updated..as if you never used the app to begin with.
Per usual, you need to be connected to the same wifi network from your phone and PC/Mac/iPad/tablet you'll use to "control" your phone.
There aren't any notable downsides that I've read of or come across. This is simply a solid app that has unlimited potential.

*Just to clarify, I purposely did not put this in the app section. I'm not attempting to solicit the app, only get the word of mouth out and get a discussion going on how you all feel about AirDroid<--- definitely advertising

As a rule of thumb I delete Kies Air at first because it's bloat to me. But I tried using it as often as I'd use AirDroid. Kies Air is just so slow, laggy and well...bloated. At least the web version. I'm the kind of person who loads saves ALL of his texts. So Kies attempts to automatically load EVERYTHING on your phone at once: texts, calls, music, pictures, videos, files. Software-wise it's not necessarily efficient.
To answer the original question- yes. But this is faster and cleaner in every definition of the words. Much simpler UI with faster transfer speeds and won't hog up your bandwidth because it only loads data as needed.
*Edit from here and below:
I guess the reason for the lag behind Kies Air is due to the fact that it runs a Java applet on your web browser. AirDroid runs a much cleaner JavaScript that's linked with HTML5, as I understand.
It's up to you, of course. But after trying both, I don't think there's any actual competition as to which app is significantly faster and more efficient.

Yes, in some aspects Kies Air does the same thing.
However, AirDroid is 12094820394823 times faster! The ease of the interface is amazing. It's a truly innovative application if you do a lot of files transfers through your phone. I use my phone like a thumb drive all the time. This only makes it easier. Sending messages while doing work on my laptop without having to type on the phone's keyboard? Yes please.
I would easily pay for this app.
I would like to see a novel contact manager built into the app. Something that is really functional and efficient. We all know that google contacts and android's address book are both a little weak in the functionality department. If the developers of the app can make such a solid app, I'm sure they can come up with a creative contact manager to integrate into AirDroid.
awesome app, but it would be even more awesome if u can fully utilize your phone (like literally browse through phone functions on a PC) on the web browser

This looks absolutely amazing. They must have spent quite a bit of time to make this app as awesome as it is. And completely free? Crazy.
Which is the only reason I have qualms about it. How can a company invest so much into an app that generates no revenue whatsoever in the Market?
I am always weary of apps that have complete access to all of your personal information (which the app needs to work correctly) and have no obvious avenue for generating revenue.
Maybe I'm missing something here? Are there ads?

Thanks for supporting AirDroid. Actually now, AirDroid also supports remote access to your mobile, even when your mobile is not around and not in the same wifi, you can access it to Web browser by enabling the auto wake up mode in APP.
There should be a screen viewer option.

To the first point, Kies is Samsung proprietary. They may do similar things and Airdroid is faster, but for the HTC phones I have, Kies really lacks in the "working" dept.
Secondarily, I am unsure if your statement includes the web-based Google Contacts in desktop browser but I find it quite sufficient for my needs and is obviously synced with Android if you use Google apps.
For every other need, I would imagine the import/export functionality of Google Contacts would make it easily portable to other platforms and then able to be ported back. "Insert simple script here " tacked on to said platform enables full auto sync.

Enabling "Phone" Functionality On The P3113/WiFi-only GT2 7.0?

Hey hey. Ever since getting a WiFi-only GT-P3113, I had been wanting to figure out a way to unlock the "phone" functionality in software. First, what do I mean? I know that this device does not physically have a "mobile" radio and so it'll NEVER work like a real cellular device. I know this.
I understand that you can't just magically make a WiFi only device into a 3G / 4G device by flashing it.
What I am after is making the normal Android phone-related stuff work, like making the Phone APK visible, making the normal dialer accessible, and enabling support for the "Headset" BlueTooth profile.
The native Android Phone.apk has support for SIP accounts built right into it, and even when you're using a 3rd party solution, the native dialer functions are just plain nice to have access to. I use GrooveIP myself, and it gets setup as the default dialer app, so basically all you gotta do to make calls is go to People, click on the # you want to call, and it works, just like a standard Android handset. Very nice and easy
The BT headset functionality is useful in apps like Skype.
I kinda inadvertently found out that all of this stuff gets "turned on" if you're using the ROM from a P3100.
I flashed one of those while testing out codeworkx's excellent CM10 ROMs, since the initial release was 3100-only.
You MUST modify the installer script to flash a 3100 ROM onto a 3113.
My purpose in posting is two-fold:
1-I couldn't find any threads really talking about this particular issue.
2-Are there any particular problems that could result in flashing the 3100 ROMs onto a 3113? Everything is working for me so far, and I can't think of any possible problems, but I figured I'd ask.
The only thing that was even remotely an "issue" for me was I had an always-empty "signal" icon on my notification bar. Since I'm running CM10 I just disabled the signal icon. This doesn't disable the WiFi icon, so its all good

Ummmmm. A few things. First, that application doesn't appear to be really related to my post at all.
Second, when I compare that app with Google Voice as a texting solution, I kinda feel like Google Voice is a much better way to go. To use Tablet Talk you pay $3 for the app, which you then have to have installed on a smartphone. The smart phone has to be up and running, and has to have SMS service on it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the phone is turned off, runs out of battery, or loses reception, then the whole system stops working.
Google Voice is free, and to use it on any Android device, you install the free Google Voice app and then use it. Since I don't even have a smartphone or any sort of SMS service, I don't appear to be able to use Tablet Talk. Actually at this point I don't even really use the normal GoogleVoice app, since I have GV hooked up to my GoogleTalk account via GV Max. Basically means I just "text" in Trillian, along with IMing. Its just more efficient that way.
How the hell would he know you don't have a smartphone?

Yeah...
Tablet talk works great, if you have a phone.
Info I could have used.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2
He wouldn't, which is why I pointed it out as one of the many reasons I gave for why Tablet Talk is (I feel) an inferior solution when contrasted with Google Voice. At this point I have my SMS, AIM, MSN, and Facebook IM all coming in via GoogleTalk, so now I only have to worry about setting up one chat solution and I'm good. To that end I'm liking LilyPad, and hopefully will jump to that once it gets Group support. Until then, Trillian is my be all, end all comms solution.
I don't really know how that has anything to do with using the P3100 ROMs on the P3113 or phone functionality LOL
I found that there are a lot of different SIP solutions that'll work just fine with the native Android Phone.apk, which has a built in SIP client. I'm presently trying out a combination of sip2sip, IPKall, and GoogleVoice. I have been using GrooveIP but its one more thing to install & configure, so I'll see how this works with just "native" Android apps.
Does anyone know if there are any potential problems that this can cause? So far I haven't encountered any, just didn't wanna make my tablet explode or something
To be honest I think it can be enabled via build prop or something of the like. I found it when looking for mount info. Workin till 9ish ill take a look when I get home.

OP,
This can be done by decompling the framework-res.apk and modifying /res/values/bools.XML and set "voice capable" from false to true. Then recomplie your modified framework-res file and replace the one on the device.
You will then be able to see the phone app and the sip option.
You must know what you are doing and take a backup before you do this because if you mess up the file your device will not boot.

All of that is true, but by not having the phone screen on, and using tablet talk through bt, battery life is way better on my phone.

I'll be looking into this
My first attempt at making this work is extremely ghetto but also works
The key reasons for doing this are to gain access to the Bluetooth "headset" profile, which I use to make my Motorola headphones also work for audio input (they have a mic on them). GrooveIP supports BlueTooth headsets, but under the standard P3113 stack the input isn't enabled...

And also to enable the normal Phone.apk, which gives you the native dialer and also makes it so you can "call" people by clicking on their numbers from the People app. If you don't have this you'll have to go to your third party app and then find who you wanna call, which is all around less efficient and integrated.
-EDIT-
This is what I get for posting from work, forgot to say what I actually DID! Thanks go to clubtech, who pointed out that the change is inside of framework-res.apk.
My solution was dirt simple: I found out about the trick in the first place because I flashed a P3100 ROM onto my P3113, cuz at that time there was no P3113 available.
This worked fine EXCEPT that the audio input isn't mapped right so your mic doesn't work.
My new "solution" was to steal the framework-res.apk file out of the latest 3100 CM10 ROM.
You can find the file inside the ROM @ <Root Of Zip>\system\framework
I used 7zip to pull the framework-res.apk from the 3100 7-29 zip, and then opened the 3113 7-29 zip in 7-zip, deleted the original framework-res.apk, and replaced it with the 3100 version.
The devices are close enough that this works.
The phone features are turned on and my mic still works.
There's surely a better way to do this, but it works for me for now
BTW, since the tablet ROMs don't include one, here's the "stock" Jellybean texting app, MMS.apk.
I pulled it from a Jellybean ROM for the Galaxy Nexus compiled 2 days ago.
Confirmed its working on my Tab.
I'm using the app GV Integration to make my GV texts show up like regular texts.
Why do this? Cuz it makes widgets and notifications and stuff that depends on the "native" SMS work as expected.
My main impetus for this was to make the XBMC controller app YATSE properly react to text messages
Just wanted to follow up on this, I found a relatively painless way to accomplish this mod.
Attached to a thread on XDA-Devs (where else!) is a really nice tool to make it very easy to n00bs like me to decompile and mod the framework-res.apk easily. This in turn makes enabling the "phone" stuff super easy
See the thread over here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1823701
The tool is called Framework Flasher 1.1.4 by Wes Foster (wesf90)
Hey Divinity,
It's great that you have shared what you achieved. I am about to buy this tablet.
Could you please make a step-by-step instruction of how to achieve this on the P3113 Tablet?
That would be greatly appreciated. I am a noob so your instruction will be very helpful for me.
Thanks in advance.
Its hard to know what degree of "noob" you are.
To be messing around with making these sorts of modifications, you'll need to at least have rooted your device.
In lieu of that, be aware that there are lots of solutions that involve simply using apps from the marketplace. I actually don't even use this solution anymore, mostly just Google Voice. The Google Voice integration app I posted about doesn't really work the way I'd like, so instead I've been just piping "everything" through GoogleTalk instead.
There's a free web service called GV Max that lets you connect your Google Voice phone number up to your Google Talk account (among other things), allowing you to send / receive SMS messages within any GoogleTalk client. I frequently use this so I can text people from my computers very easily (since I pretty much always have a chat program running). I've been using GVMax off and on for a couple years now, and its pretty great
Occasionally I use Groove IP if I "have to" receive an incoming call on my tablet. Other than that, the stock Google Voice app allows you to make calls without it being a big deal.
All that said, the process of doing the mod is easy, and the thread I linked to contains a step-by-step guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1823701

[APP][2.2+] DroidXplorer, Wireless filemanager

I just published an early version of an app that allows you to browse and manage the contents on your device using just a webbrowser, the only requirement is that your device is connected to the same network as the computer or tablet you use to browse with.
The Video and Image galleries shows thumbnails, and if you have the correct plugins installed in your browser you can stream audio and video without downloading.
Here's a video clip featuring the web interface:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WzFWsIsDY4
And here are two screenshots of the server app and the web based user interface

}
Download from Google Play:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.droidstop.droidxplore
If you decide to try it, please note that when you start the server it might take a while before the server is active, you will notice when notification icon "xp" is shown.
This is an early version, and if feedback shows it's worth it, I will implement ability to transfer files TO the device within a week.
I have only been able to test the app on an HTC Sensation with ICS, and an emulator running 2.2 so I can't guarantee it will work for everyone yet, just remember to send bug reports to me so I can fix all issues, if there are any.
Current features
- Browse contents
- View thumbnail galleries
- Download and Upload files from and to your device.
- Create folders, rename files and folders and delete stuff.
I would really appreciate feedback on this.
Thanks for reading.
Suggested plugins for your browser to get streaming from your device working:
Quicktime, http://www.apple.com/quicktime/?
VLC Media Player, http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html
Pretty decent and fast, but quite a bit of wasted space. Maybe you also also direct us to some of the plugins to enable video/audio playback in browser.
Not too bad actually. Streaming video seems to work well in Chrome. I'm excited to try this at home on my Google TV. That's the real test, in my opinion. Excited for some more features too.
Nice app.
Only Mp3 is being streamed. Even Mp4 starts downloading.
Thank you for all the nice feedback guys, and what a great honor to be featured on the first page
I've already implemented the below mentioned features, but need to test them through some more before publishing on Play.
1) Renaming files and folder
2) Transfering files to the device, either one file at the time or you can transfer a zip and have it automatically extracted on arrival to the device.
3) Deleting files and folders
There's also a few minor changes, and bug fixes. All (apart from a few minor non-critical) strings are in the strings.xml, so if anyone feels up to translate to another language, drop me a note and I'll send you the xml needed.
The issue with non streaming is probably a mime type misconfiguration on my part, so I'll have a look at it for a coming release.
I know there's a lot of empty space when using the web interface on a larger screen, but I'm working more and more towards having the same interface fully functional for both stationary and smaller devices, there's probably a few glitches left for me to fix in that area though...
p.s. I'll have a look around for decent plugins for streaming to web browsers, if you know of any good ones, feel free to post them here and I'll edit my first post to include links.
Cheers guys, The update will be available later tonight or by tomorrow.
smooth and fast. works better than some of the others out there. looking forward to the update :good:
Feature request.
I can't close the app, it restart again and again.
downloading it now. I can't wait to give it a go tonight

Quicktime is one. VLC works sometimes.
This sounds really great but I am kind of afraid of using it in my company network.
I really would like to run it 24/7 in my private network to have access all the time to the content, but as soon as I arrive at work my mobile connects to the company wifi and would share it there. Is there any kind of password protection or anything similar?
Yeah of course I could disabled it manually, but I am lazy and I bet I will forget it sometimes.. and I guess tasker is no option for this, is it?
Or do I get it wrong that this 'service' is also working when the mobile is in deep sleep?!
Sorry for not publishing an update yet, I will have to postpone it one more day.
I just gave the thumbnail galleries a really great performance boost, and I want to make sure it's stable enough before
releasing it..

Yeah, in the currently released version there's a setting for username and password authentication, and yes, once the server is activated it will run until it's manually closed, even if you restart the device. Next up for implementation is also a way to restrict which networks the server is allowed to run on.
Thank you all for testing and posting feedback so far.
I'll get back to work on the update and report back once it's complete.
Cheers
Version 1.02
So I just published version 1.02, but it might take a few hours before the update has propagated through all the google servers as usual.
Here's the latest additions:
Version 1.02
- Transfer files to your device, (You can also upload a zip and have it extracted once it has finished uploading)
- Rename files and folders
- Delete files and folders
- Create new folders
- Performance boost in the gallery views
So it's more and more starting to look like a file manager.
ToDo
- Multiple file uploads
- Restrict app from running on certain networks, and have it automatically start on others
- A *bonus feature* named QuickShare for those who purchased the ad-free version..
(I'm not much for limiting functionality, I'd rather like to add a few bonuses and helpful features for those who help me in return)
Please, report bugs and feature requests and post your feedback, and thanks again for your time.
Came in right when an update is going, about to try this out thanks

Had another update going as mentioned above.. unfortunately both kids got the flue and chicken pox.. bahh I hate that things like this happens exactly the same time as me being in my most creative mood!
Anyway I expect to have the update ready in about a week, so post your bug reports now for me to be able to fix as much as possible!
Known issues:
- Not always restoring the scroll position after renaming a file/folder.
- Uploaded files doesnt show up in galleries immidiately.

Is there a way to select a bunch of files using the shift key??
Enviado desde mi Galaxy Nexus --> @NicoRz
@drraptor, thanks, I've heard about "force close" but not of "refuse close", I'll have a look at it.
@deja_vu: Yeah, but use the ctrl key for multi selection. Shift key will be implemented in a couple of weeks, once I've straightened out a few other issues, dealing with navigation, but thanks for taking the time to post. I appreciate it.
Thanks for all the helpfull feedback so far! Later, I'd better go and care for the critters, cheers!

SmartMessenger
Aim : To be the most visually customisable, adaptive and secure SMS app there is. Oh and the best looking

Open Beta
There is now a play store listing for SmartMessenger without so anyone can try the beta and not have to join google+ Please note I still consider this a beta (but obviously open to anyone) so any suggestions or requests, comment in this thread. The G+ beta group (restricted) is still live and will get early versions.
The kind of input I'm after is from "you" the potential user:
Help me prioritise the development and order of features
Suggest corrections, amendments or additional features
Find and eliminate bugs
few random screenshots:
Features and Status
SMS messaging and emoticons
MSMS (Media\Link SMS)
This is also done and uses google drive to send full size images (as doc link) inside the sms. This to me is better than MMS that costs way too much here in the UK and has very silly limitations. Ability to send any type of file and maybe any size, connection allowing! The other individual if not using smart messenger will get a link, if they do use an app capable of resolving links, it will be presented in a icon form!
SmartMesseges SMS
This is a special type of message that will still be handled over sms, more info soon
More details shortly
Procedural UI generation
This is done and working, it's what the current themes use. Basically it builds android drawable resources at runtime. So no static xml or bitmaps. The advantage of this is not space, or speed for that matter. But it will allow me to implement a theme/visual creator that will allow users to create and mod any aspect of the visual UI
This also breaks from the norm. as I don't agree with lots of googles own guidelines, I want to be able to have 1 handed operation on my phone, thats why this app doesn't currently follow the actionbar pattern, well that an many other reasons
There is an online theme library currently of about 8 or 9, always up for suggestions
TO DO: Advanced in-app theme creator
Message Box Management
Can currently create message boxes and have them as targets/destinations for messages. Locking features are there, I'm just looking at the best ways to allow unlock/unhide while it's not apparent that anything is hidden
TO DO: Enable security and locking features, implement global unlocks
Filters and Rules
This allows creation of simple, but powerful rules to control anything from message box distribution, forwarding, autoreply, notification controls to even daisy chaining units together and having multiple units spider the messages. Also includes REGEX triggers too
Rules can be used to trigger custom reactions, notifications, LED colors, auto replies and forwarders etc
Schedules
As it stands you can schedule texts and have any time periods you want, and add ending conditions like amount or date/time
TO DO: Test and maybe add adaptive elements to it, such as a variable part that is populated based of some rule (like happy Xth brithday) and it fills in X
Notifications
The notifications are controllable per person via rules and filters, and can trigger and override all options with things like custom vibration patterns sounds popups etc
Secret Messagebox and Messages mode (Blind Security)

Honestly it looks amazing and I'd love to test it out. The one feature that is basically a necessity for me is available in textra in that the app automatically turns on the mobile data temporarily to get an MMS. It was a huge pain for me since I tend to have mobile data turned off because I have a limited data plan. If that was in this I'd easily replace textra with this.

NO MMS, not even sure I want them to be honest, slow, small and costly... better to use the GDrive link sms that are in SmartMessenger... but I'm more than open to consider it. This is still very early in development, so anything that is worth it, I will add for the masses
I understand that it can intercept SMS messages and be used as the default texting app, but does it work the same way with Google voice texts?
I'm in. Using sliding messaging right now but this looks promising!

Not at all, ONLY SMS afaik
While in testing always better to set the op mode to "Process and Passthrough" anyways, so it doesn't consume any messages, if you're not sure that is

IIRC I wanted something similar, and also to do BAND switching. Unfortunately, google took out the api's required to do that, so that it would be ALWAYS a user choice. So not sure if that will ever be possible again (post gingerbread)

Actually thinking about it, DO NOT TRY SmartMessenger image sending, cause it will send (until I put some controls in) FULL SIZE images. So not nice when your phone takes 2-5mb image potentially and sends it for sharing to GDrive. I will add to the dev list, image size control See I never thought about limited data caps previously, what with my unlimited data plan

Well you have some valid points, I should never assume that data is all free and limitless But like I say, watch out for next few days, cause I will add some image limiting to the attachments, so maybe I will have size/dimension resampling, like resize to 8k or something Be nice for user to control the data flow, I can imagine you have to be VERY careful because of how apps abuse and use data these days

Stateside, there's only 2 networks that still have unlimited data and both have horrendous service so I'm stuck in a 2 gb plan. I subscribed to the thread so I'll definitely keep an eye on it and see what develops. Overall, watching the data isn't too bad since I just keep mobile data off and turn it on as needed but I still need to keep an eye out. Oh well, ces la vie.

Smart IR Remote app by Color Tiger

I noticed this app is on sale for $5. It looks nice, but there doesn't appear to be a trial or anything. Has anyone used this app before? How does it work? Is it any good/worth the cash? It gets good reviews, but I rather hear from the horse's mouth what the thoughts are. Does it seem to support pretty much everything? Anyone know if it supports DirectTV boxes? Can it be used with a HTPC that has a IR module? Can you configure the interface the way you like or are the screens only the way the dev wants them?
I had a dodgy apk of it, since it had been taken off the Play Store. I have now bought it while it's on offer. Excellent app. Simple universal remote control with a brilliant widget. And now the tablet version and HTC version are all built into one app. I'd recommend it. Well worth 5 bucks.

Sadly it said it was on sale until midnight tonight. Saw it in the play store for $4.99, went to buy it and it was about to charge $9.99. Went to email the author, came back to try again and now play store had it at $9.99. Guess I'll wait for another sale...

I guess a follow-up question (maybe I should make a new thread?) is this:
Are there any good free universal remotes? I tried a few and they are like "You can control any TV before 1990 for free" or "you can control these 2 types of TV" and then you have to pay.
I'm just looking for a free one that's decent until a really good one goes on sale again. I regret not getting this one.
I also use Smart IR Remote. Works great for the most part, but it can't learn. due to Samsung's implementation
Anyone know if it supports DirectTV boxes?

Yes, but since the Samsung can't learn it might be limited by that.

Since I was playing with house money (the $25 google play credit for registering the note 8.0) I snagged the smart remote app at the $6.99 sale price and I really like it. I have 3 tv's on my wall along with a wall mounted touch screen jukebox with infrared support. It was easy to come up with one page of the only needed buttons for all 3 tv's and juke box. I also edited the apk and added some images of local channels that were added to quick channel macros. The screen scrolls and includes the same channel macros for each of my other 2 tv's. The main power button in the upper left is a macro that sends power toggle to the 3 tv's and audio system.

Also, is there a way to get that directional pad on a DirecTV remote?

How did you put the channel icons on the buttons?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
I don't use a dvd player so most of the custom icons for skip, play, rewind etc. were not used. I just replaced those icons in the apk with my local channel icons and resigned the apk and installed. I created macros for favorite channels and applied the channel icon within app. You can get icons from here http://www.iconharmony.com/icons/watchtv?category=harmonyOne. I did have a little contact with the app dev and they are working on "favorite" channel buttons that will also allow for adding icons from sd. The dpad only gets used within a universal remote. Create a new universal remote named direct tv and apply the commands and buttons from you direct tv remote in the edit mode and hide your original direct tv remote from the remote list.
good day.
I ended up buying it. Love the fact that I'm down to 1 remote (the Note 8). Sadly, two apps though since this won't work with my Roku. I have to use their app. Still, for two DirectTV, two TV's, and two DVD players (7 remotes total). It's a godsend!
I bought it but ended up choosing a refund soon after due to it being *very* hard to read the text in the settings. Its like its blurry or something on its black background.
Is it just me that experienced this?
I wanted this app but doubt I will buy it until that changes. The font displayed on the app screenshots are not the blurry text I saw in the app itself.
Sent from my GT-N5110 using xda app-developers app
I bought this app because it was on sale last week. It is a good app and highly customizable with its several blank button. The macros help me to set one button to control several device at once and also build a single remote/interface to control some basic command for several devices.
I have several remote which are not listed in the app so I send the app developer an email. Gladly, they reply it within a day. They point out that some of my unlisted remote actually already in the list but with difference name specially for Panasonic tv (they keep reuse same remote code for their line of product). They also said will try to add one of my unlisted remote code if possible. That's 1 star for good after sales service.
But I really hope it has learning function, which later I learn it is a limitation from Samsung side.
Anyway, using Note 8.0 as a remote is not really practical for it large size. Normal phone size is okay but not Note 8.0.

I wanted this app but doubt I will buy it until that changes. The font displayed on the app screenshots are not the blurry text I saw in the app itself.

I don't have that blurry text problem specially not in setting. But when I press the setting button at the top right, it showed 3 more button ( SETTING, EDIT and RENAME). These 3 text are a bit blurry.

Long time ago i had Nokia 3650 Symbian...
i had totalirremote app. It had include large database IR codes , but now on my galaxy s6 must all time connect to internet for download new codes
i found downloaded codes ( saved remotes) in /data/data/com.remotefairy (root access)

Is possible to download their IR remotes database and save. Later import it offline without connect to internet?
