DAC brand...? - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What is the DAC on this beast..kind of a major factor in my decision...
Apologies if this is answered elsewhere, do close this thread in that case
Edited in response to the reply below...
I meant Digital Audio Converter..the sound quality of the phone depends on it.

you mean the sound processor? i imagine itll be the same as on all qualcomm soc's. i think only htc uses their own discrete solution.

Hey man, maybe you are talking about DSP? Digital Signal Processing? Hexagon, QDSP6V5A, 600MHz included in SoC Snapdragon 801.
Info from here http://www.qualcomm.com/snapdragon/processors/801

Whatever Qualcomm WCD9xxx variant is usually paried with 800/801 chips.
The Hexagon is not the DAC.
There's also an Audience ES325, likely mostly for microphone processing during calls.

It actually stands for Digital (to) Analog Converter, just for the record.
And since it's Snapdragon 801 powered, it's most likely a Wolfson DAC in whatever class coupled with the audio hardware so the sound quality should be very nice indeed.

I don't know of any Qualcomm devices with Wolfson DACs - it's Qualcomm's own codec solution.

I didn't mean the Snapdragon 801 SoC has a Wolfson DAC onboard, I meant it could be part of the hardware in the One itself - Samsung (for example) is well known to use Wolfson DACs on their devices that use Qualcomm processors (my Galaxy Express is a Snapdragon powered device with a Wolfson DAC onboard), so... guess we'll find out soon enough when someone get the One and does a full workup on it.

Snapdragon HDMI?

I'm starting this thread cause I'm curious what you have to say on this.
Qualcomm is talking much(especially lately) about their snapdragon platform and how great it will be, that it will play 720p videos with support for multiply codecs and that it will be 3D graphic 'monster', but lately I think that it lacks one very important function HDMI. I know that there isn't even one phone which has it(but more and more phones have TV-out and with the flood of HD TV's it's a must) but either there is one that is capable of playbacking 720p content and for now only tegra has HDMI which is something that puts a smile on my face. With it it can become ultimate PMP.
Do you think qualcomm should add HD out to snapdragon or leave it these way and wait for newer processor from snapdragon family?
Please answer maybe they will read it and they will add it

Samsung Announces Exynos 5250 SoC, 2GHz A15 Dual-Core

SammyHub said:
Samsung has just unveiled a new System-on-chip (SoC) for future mobile devices. It’s the Exynos 5250 that boasts two Cortex-A15 chips clocked at 2GHz. The dual-core Exynos 5250 is created using a 32nm-low power HKMG process and is said to double the performance when compared to a 1.5GHz dual-core SoC based on Cortex-A9.
In addition to improved processing performance, Exynos 5250 features graphics performance improved by four times compared to Cortex-A9-based Application Processors, supports stereoscopic 3D displays and a display resolution of up to WQXGA (2560×1600).
Samsung says the new Exynos chip will be used in high-end tablets and will be mass produced sometime in the second quarter of next year.

Yea, you are right. It will run circles and a few squares and rectangles around any A9 SoC.
4x the Mali-400MP eh, I guess that means a new GPU. I wonder which one since the Mali-T604 won't be out until 2013.
Could be S3 material, the timing (Q2) matches.
Perhaps the GPU is the SGX543's successor ?
a strong mobile and i will have a buy ..
Initially this SoC will be available to Galaxy series Tablets and not for Smartphones.....

I'd like the T604 to be in the Exynos 5250 but that gpu was said to be 10x more powerful than the Mali-400, something Samsung would probably state if that was were the case.

I thought it was based on theirs? Just with some tweaks for iOS and all that.
EDIT: Just checked wikipedia and it says the A5 is manufactured by Samsung. If it's manufactured by sammy then I'd say there's a pretty good chance it's based on their tech.

[Q]Nexus S HD video recording hack

Hi guys.
My question is simple. Unlike the Galaxy S, the Nexus S doesn't support (720p) HD video recording. Both devices are essentially the same (Hummingbird chipset, same GPU etc.), so is it possible to enable this feature with a software hack like on the Nexus One? Are there any hardware limitations, if yes, whats the difference with the Galaxy S? If HD is not possible, is somthing like ~960x540 possible?
Sent from my iced and sandwiched Nexus S.
Nexus one hack just upscaled videos from 720x480 to 1280x720
I'm not sure but I think I saw somewhere that the ns is missing a piece of hardware compared tothe galaxy s. Although other people were disputing that so hopefully its not true and there is a hack to get HD recording on the ns.
Nexus S camera isn't the same galaxy s its missing the HD encoder chip
720p will never happen
well we can always try hex editing the camera module. It's not difficult...
its been in discussion ever since the nexus s came out over a year ago
if it was that simple it would have happened by now its hardware limitation not software

What about just more than the 480p? Like, 540p... And how about trying with raw files or software encoding? May use lots of space and slow the phone down, but why not...

Why would you even want to use a phone for video recording, the quality is **** regardless of the resolution.

agreed, but if you beat a dead horse 5x, it'll come back to life
The phone's missing the hardware capability, plain and simple. No amount of hackery will get you a LEGITIMATE HD recording res.
Well, I only partially agree. It's always nice to have a small and more or less decent "camera" wherever you are.

actually the nexus s has the HD recording capability built into it. It was originally thought that it didnt support it because of the missing chip but the camera module is a SoC. It is only not supported due to a codec problem, however, ICS was supposed to fix it by adding the h264 encoder codec into the system.
Yeah, but as much as I know, the SoC probably isn't porwerful enough. I think the SGS has a separate chip. (I searched quickly a few moments ago, but maybee what I'm saying is false..)

Can you point me to something that shows this is true? I'm not calling you a liar or anything, but I'm not aware of any resolution to the original issue of it NOT having an encoder chip being the reason.

CPU Platform, Audio DAC and More

Hi all, I was hoping to learn more about certain key parts within the device. What about the CPU board/platform? I know certain 2012 Xperias were grouped based on a common CPU board with codenames e.g. Fuji, Blue etc.
Also, does anyone know what DAC is used in this for audio? What is the quality of the audio with headphones like?
Any other key or interesting parts in the device to take note of? :victory:

i9500 DAC vs i9505 DAC

Just thought I'd throw my two cents out there. I have the international i9500 version of the galaxy s4 and it was kind of irritating me. The camera was slow and buggy and the phone heats up intermittently.. Not to mention samsung botched the implementation of big.LITTLE... I decided to buy the i9505, which has a good camera, is as fast as the octa and doesn't overheat.
Anyway I listen to music all the time (I listen with the Shure SE535s at the moment). All I have to say is that the DAC in the i9505 is rubbish compared to the Wolfson 8740 in the i9500.. For this reason only I have decided to keep the octa and ditch the i9505. I don't mind living with the little flaws in the i9500 for the sake of the amazing sound it outputs. And I mean the difference is huge.
Just a heads up for anyone thinking of getting an S4 and who listens to a lot of music through head / earphone.
Correction, the DAC is actually the Wolfson WM5102E (low power version)
I've noticed this too coming from the i9300 to the i9505. Unfortunately I believe this is one of the drawbacks of the 9505.

Yep sure: highs sounded tinny and harsh with the 9505.. When I swapped back to the i9500, the sound stage seemed larger, more details and the highs really natural.. both compaired using the Shure SE535 IEMs..
I have had the s3, note 2, htc one and using the s4 i9505 right now. My favorite is easily the note 2 with boeffla sound supported kernel, no complaints whatsoever. The htc one is a joke, sounds very similar to the one x which generally produces a weak sound. The s4 on the other hand sounded average with stock Rom, terribly weak on a Ge Rom but phenomenal with cm10.1 with dsp support. The difference between this and the Ge Rom is night and day.
Performance is equal or almost equal to the note 2. I am more than satisfied.
With the i9500 however I would not know

yupp..u r rite man..for any android device, no need to listen std music player. We have poweramp.if compare with any iphone or thousand ipod player u can't beat poweramp player with audio tweak on kernel (siyah for S3 & perseus for S4).for me audio sound the most important on every my devices..
of course my fav. music is hardcore, that's why sound the most important to me..
mine only having issue with laggy sometimes.it's okay, nothing can be perfect on real life.
---------- Post added at 05:15 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:11 AM ----------
one more thing to ensure poweramp pushing to the limit, make sure u need earpiece with output more than 90db.it sure the "beats tour" one of perfect output with high clarity sound.
i9500 with poweramp + stweaks playing hardcore & metalcore.
this is wht i mean..
Thoroughly enjoy the audio quality in my I9500, it's very "full", clear with very deep bass, it's the 1st phone where I haven't changed the equaliser settings as it comes out-the-box amazing
Personally haven't had the lag problems with my I9500, so I'm very happy. Sony Exmor RS camera sensor, Wolfson DAC, great GPU, beastly A15 CPU at just 1.6GHz, loving it couldn't careless for LTE as it's still very limited down here.
Refer to the device comparison/discussion sticky.
