Samsung Announces Exynos 5250 SoC, 2GHz A15 Dual-Core - General Topics

SammyHub said:
Samsung has just unveiled a new System-on-chip (SoC) for future mobile devices. It’s the Exynos 5250 that boasts two Cortex-A15 chips clocked at 2GHz. The dual-core Exynos 5250 is created using a 32nm-low power HKMG process and is said to double the performance when compared to a 1.5GHz dual-core SoC based on Cortex-A9.
In addition to improved processing performance, Exynos 5250 features graphics performance improved by four times compared to Cortex-A9-based Application Processors, supports stereoscopic 3D displays and a display resolution of up to WQXGA (2560×1600).
Samsung says the new Exynos chip will be used in high-end tablets and will be mass produced sometime in the second quarter of next year.

Damn, I just posted it in the Galaxy S3 rumor page.
Yea, you are right. It will run circles and a few squares and rectangles around any A9 SoC.

4x the Mali-400MP eh, I guess that means a new GPU. I wonder which one since the Mali-T604 won't be out until 2013.

Could be S3 material, the timing (Q2) matches.
Perhaps the GPU is the SGX543's successor ?

a strong mobile and i will have a buy ..

Initially this SoC will be available to Galaxy series Tablets and not for Smartphones.....

I'd like the T604 to be in the Exynos 5250 but that gpu was said to be 10x more powerful than the Mali-400, something Samsung would probably state if that was were the case.

nice, maybe i will buy it

I'm thinking a Mali T604 in the 4412 and SGX 543 MP4 in the 5520. They recently announced that they have a license for 5 series MP

T658 will be 10x Mali 400, so t604 is more inline with what Samsung are saying.

iPad 3 with A5 S? It's been mention it'll have a higher resolution and it's been mentioned that its coming soon.

Put one in a galaxy tab and give me some xda devs making firmware for it and i'll get it.

I thought it was based on theirs? Just with some tweaks for iOS and all that.
EDIT: Just checked wikipedia and it says the A5 is manufactured by Samsung. If it's manufactured by sammy then I'd say there's a pretty good chance it's based on their tech.

No its actually apple that designed it and sent the blueprints to SAMSUNG to make.

Qualcomm's Dual-core cpu inferior to others?

So I visited www.phonearena.com yesterday and saw the news about the HTC Pyramid. At first I thought wow,Qualcomm and HTC won't only get left behind but will have about the same technology and will run at higher frequencies.
But then I remembered something that troubled me.I remember reading somewhere that Qualcomm's dual-core CPUs will be based on the current-gen Cortex-A8 by ARM,while others, like Samsung's Orion, will be using the next-gen Cortex-A9 that is superior in both perfrormance and consumption, while being designed especially for dual-core CPUs,unlike the A8.
What's your take on this guys?
No one?

Strongly agree
i hope this isn't true. tegra 2 outperformed old cpu's with only one core running! that's because it's Cortex-A9. now, if it was Cortex-A8, i don't think there would be much of a difference.
In fact i think it is superior to the tegra 2 or Orion plat form despite being an cortex A8 architecture, but it is not a long term solution point proven as Qualcomm is developing it A9 counterpart the MSM 89xx
How it is superior? Well between A8 and A9 architecture to my knowledge there isn't much of a difference, the major one is enhanced soc and the capability to use DDR3 ram instead of being limited to ddr2
But how these two doesn't matter in the short term, well the first one is obvious because Qualcomm doesn't use just a Normal Cortex A8 architecture ( was used on the first gen of snapdragon) as the second generation MSM8255 used on the desire HD for exemple has an enhanced soc and cach point proven when compared to a lets say Omap 3 or hummingbird in every cpu benchmark i believe the MSM comes on top(correct me if i m wrong).
The second point which is about Ram, i don't believe we will be seeing DDR3 ram on smartphone anytime soon so at this it is a kinda useless advantage.
Now add to that if the rumors are correct that one cpu can be switched off if the charge is low then while the on tegra 2 which use a dual core architecture and not a dual cpu architecture.
Edit: this is true + Asynchronis clocking for each core!
Also in terms of graphics, the MSM8x60 comes with adreno 220 which is definitly faster than the adreno 205 almost as fast as the SGX540 and which is rumored to be faster than the GPU in tegra 2, the geforce, as for the Orion is believed to get the SGX543mp2 but Orion is not coming anytime soon, and probably will hit the market once tegra3 and MSM89XX is almost there (which comes with Adreno 300)
Hopefully this does help you, i know that not everything i mentioned is accurate, but i ll invite you to watch this

I do agree with you, but they do give a scal for the performance especially when there are different types that relies on a different system to test the perfomance.
In real world you have to agree that MSM8255 is the fastest CPU out there atm just look at how the Desire HD is a screamer! or even the G2/Desire Z with the same CPU but clocked 800mhz does a pretty great job even compared to the latest omap3/hummingbird phones.
Definitely, the MSM8255 45nm matches the old MSM8250 65nm even when the stock clock in the Z/G2 is only 800 mhz, versus that extra 200 mhz. The gpu is lacking compared to others.

As lotis said the only GPU that is faster than the Adreno 205 is the SGX540 and by a very slight marging in 3D while the Adreno wins in terms of 2D. The thing with Adreno GPUs is that they are clocked with the CPU and i believe the comparaisons were done with a G2 vs SGS + lagfix and froyo , i believe the GPU on the Desire HD does have a higher clock than the one on the G2 and thus perform better but again is this a fact or just another rumor if someone could confirm this..
But for a fact we all know that a stock G2 on pure android does 1600-1800 Quadrant score and a pure desire HD does a 1900-2100 on Android + sense out of the box

whats up with all the fear and worries ? quandrant for tegra2 is a mere 1911 . it will get its a** kicked by anthing qcom makes in 2011 .
that said , there is a low possibility quandrant only runs single core enabled on quadrant , but what makes u sure that other apps will run dual core then ?

Nothing!That's the thing!
At the moment there is no software that takes advantage of both cores.I think that Gingerbread also has problems. So we have yet to see the performance gains by dual-cores.

My laptop already is for surfing the net only because I prefer the large keyboard(it's a 17 incher after all ).Everything else I do with my smartphone, which has a 25% share of my gaming time.I also have a ps3!
Now,quad-core CPUs will first be for tablets(August 2011) and then for smartphones(Fall 2011?Maybe).These will pack some things like 12-core GPUs etc.Tests have already shown that they beat many dual-core x86 CPUs.What's next?Dunno, but I surely wanna see!
The next computers is possible, but relatively weak computers per say. But can any of our phones run crysis or crysis 2? Are they even remotely capable of generating over 10fps of it? Even the MALI 400MP, Tegra 2, adreno 220 or power vr SGX543 can't manage that. I don't think we'll be seeing any SoC's with that sort of power until maybe two years?
Point being, phones will never hold the same amount of power a computer can output. So computers will stay. Who's to say computer SoC's haven't been improving? sandybridge, quantum processing, six cores core i9, 48 cores? No one cares for computer news anymore?
Anyways onto the topic, looking at the new gpu benchmarks posted of the dual core snapdragon, 1.5ghz. They're making the other cpu's look bad. So maybe the SoC isn't that bad after all. looks like it was a prototype also so the finished product could be even better. Source:

[Q] What is the best GPU? (between today's dual core droids only)

I finally have enough money to buy a new dual-core droid and I have a few units on my list. I already made some research on other aspects and I'm left with just another question: What is the best GPU in today's dual-cores?
Please take note that I'm not interested in quad-cores simply because I can't afford them! And I'm not into tablets too. Please limit the answers based on dual-cores only.
The GPUs I'm comparing are the ff:
-MALI-400
-Adreno 220
-PowerVR SGX540
As I said, I already did some research but the threads I saw are all outdated. Also, we have a lot of phones that came out last year having the above mentioned GPUs so I'm guessing we have more accurate info now.
I need help. I'm not a rich guy, I'll be buying a phone with my savings and I really want to be satisfied with the device I'll be getting 'cause I'll probably be stuck with it for the next 3 to 4 years.
Your help will be really appreciated!
*Again just a reminder, I'm only interested in the GPU performance. Nothing else.
a galaxy s2 gt-i9100 its very fast it has a 1.2ghz processor Samsung exynos dual core 1 gigabyte of ram
no doubt, the powerVR SGX540, with the Adreno coming second (not a close second however lol, a far one).

See. That's why I was getting confused. In dual-cores, some say the MALI is the best, some say it's the Adreno 220, and some claims it's the PowerVR SGX540.
Is there any way to determine the best overall? I know they have strenghts and weaknesses but what I want is the overall best. If you can provide facts or links to support your claims that would really be appreciated.

Actually, google is my best friend. I already tried googling for what I was looking for but I can't find the exact answer. I'm getting mixed reviews.
Thank you guys for sharing your thoughts. I really appreciate it. I guess what I'm looking for is real life performance. Of course a MALI-400 on a 800x480 screen have a performance advantage over a qHD/720p screen Adreno 220/PowerVR SGX540 though you might have to sacrifice image quality.
Soooooo I came to this conclusion: All the these GPUs are good enough for running almost every, if not all, apps on the Play Store. I was actually contemplating on whether to buy a Samsung Galaxy Note (5.3"), Xperia S, LG Nitro HD, and Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
These phones are all dual-cores with HD screens which I consider a must for my multimedia needs/wants. I ruled out the Galaxy Nexus first because of it's 5MP camera and non-expandable capacity. Next I ruled out the Nitro HD. It's a good phone but the around 3hours of talk time is a big no-no for me (I make a lot of calls). So I got down to the Note and Xperia S.
I now choose the Xperia S! Hooray! Reason: I believe the 1.5GHZ dual-core, 1GB RAM, Adreno 220, will be good enough to run almost everything smoothly for the next one or two years. Bonus: I get a 32GB internal storage, digicam quality 12MP shooter with excellent 720p/1080p vids, marvelous HD screen (though the SuperAMOLED is luring me towards the Note), and Sony's reputation of giving out updates even to their old devices (the x10 came from Donut land and got as far as Gingerbread country).
So there it is. I'll just probably save up again once there are Apps that my Xperia S can't run! Thanks for the help again.

Samsung Galaxy S3 on AnTuTu

Anyone else have Galaxy S3 specs on AnTuTu benchmark? I was running some tests and saw this...

Not at all! Or it's again dust in the wind? Soon we'll know
I think this is fake, i don't believe that Samsung could launch the Galaxy S3 with a dual-core A9 at this time... the previous leaks points to a quad-core processor - Exynos 4414.
This also could be one of the samples used for tests...
I it's true it sucks and won't really be able to compete with the IP5. Or are they aiming to smoke the now old IP4s? ... Not that impressive at all.
If it's true i think i would buy the HTC ONE X (Tegra3)
So if I overclocked my GNote's gpu I would get similar performance? If so then it looks like I'll be keeping my Note for another year.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA HD app.
According to the bar graphs in antutu, the S3 would be just a bit under twice as powerful as the Note - which runs dual A9s at 1.4GHz also. The 32nm Mali-400s have been clocked 50% higher, which is the main performance difference - and that wouldn't go anywhere near explaining the massive overall performance gap. However that combined with an additional two A9 cores seems fairly realistic.
Either it's a complete fake, or it's just mislabeled - and is actually a 4412. Since this is reality, I'd lean towards the former.

You can overclock an S2 or Note's GPU to 400mhz with Tegrak OC Ultimate, which is double the stock 266mhz.

It seems that Samsung change the name of the chips, see this http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_announces_new_quadcore_exynos_4_quad_processor-news-4160.php.
4212 - Quad-Core
4210 - Dual-Core

Quad core is nice for aaving battery power (more cores work less as hard as a dual or single core so it it uses less battery) but I think its a a9 architecture but the s4 is a a15 architecture which is much more optimized then a a9 so its a little bit better for battery.
And the s4 allows for 4g lte where as Mali does not.
And the s4 pro is coming out soon and the lg optimus g will have that which will probably destroy both of them out of the water.
S4 pro is a a15 quad core with adreno 320 gpu and will be the first quad to support 4g lte.
The optimus g has all the same specs as sgs3 expect it has the better cpu/gpu. Ram, screen size, resolution as well as internal memory are all the same and I think its SD card slot allows for a 64gb card as well. If it comes out for Verizon then I will be torn between that and the sgs3. Depends on dev support if It comes out on Verizon.
But for the Mali its one up is it gpu. S4 one up is 4g lte. Every thing else is marginal and as an end user you will not see the difference.

Yes I to sgs3. In terms of what the processor is better? in games for example? In general, whether with MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 go to Exynos?
Hi dude! both processors are good! And dont forget about A6(Iphone5). Sry for iphone 5 but that processor is ammazing!

The exynos is better for hardcore 3d gaming, but otherwise you won't notice the difference in day to day and casual gaming.

Doesn't matter because since its an iPhone its scaled back to "improve stability" so you will never get its full potential just like iphone 4s is.

qualcomm did not much inferior to Exynos?
In most of the reviews of US and international S3, Exynos scored more than snapdragon. But I believe, normal user will not feel much difference.
I had one with Exynos in hand. Pretty good.
i think the Exynos is very good

[Discussion] GalaxyNoteIII -Exynos vs. Qualcomm

Hi
Discuss and Compare Note III Exynos vs. Qualcomm
General Performance
- Performance of Gaming
- Performance of (using another apps)
Battery Life
& etc.
Note III N9000 will brings real Octa-Core /Exynos 5 Octa 5420 (N9000)
It means u have 4+4 cores to work with true 3GB of RAM; it seems best thing for multi-taskers...
and it might get best cpu performance (highest benchmark) even with bad hardware calibration!
Adreno 330 N9005 (Snapdragon) & Mali-T628 MP6 N9000 (Exynos) are almost similar
both have OpenCL, OpenGL ES 3.0, Renderscript Compute and etc.
infact thr s no technical reasons to get which one is better
so in my opinion in depend on ROM how to use GPU
S-Lag
the famous lag in launcher of galaxy device (touch wiz) > not found anything about it yet
But it s depend on time when do heavy using. so nothing to compare
Battery and charge
both Snapdragon 800 & Exynos 5420 (little.BIG) have energy efficient feature but there s better energy usage in N9005 (Snapdragon800) related to this video, Watch and some another report.
(will update with more choice and result)

Qualcomm version wins hands down...maybe not in benchmarks but it will get cm for shure
These threads are pretty useless,we don't even have any information about real life performance of Exynos Note 3 and since it is certainly first soc of its own type ,we will have to see.
No offence to OP or any one
Edit:There are 2-3 threads discussing the same thing.

this thread will update with more info
this means it s not just for 1-2 days
it will work months after releasing the phone
and we have info about phone from preview version of note3 (~80% of performance and etc)
we have lots of benchmark and performance report
display quality, sound quality
So if u didn't check them search it NOW and then discuss here
:good:
which version do you think it will have the most dev support?
Even though i live in India where we are going to get the exynos version, I'd prefer the snapdragon version. Im new here, but doesnt 1.3 and 1.9GHz seem less for a high end premium smartphone? Also Snapdragon will get cm for sure,

maybe Quad-Cores version (Snapdragon) like S IV
:good:

as u can check benchmarks of Octa version of Galaxy S4 u can realize that Octa-core of course has better performance than quad
the final quad-core antutu of note3 will be ~34,000 and octa will be 35,000 (at least)
:good:
Some of the things I value are stability and low heat. I'm experiencing possible stability issues with Nexus 7 (2013) based on Snapdragon S4 Pro/600 where on level 10 in Modern Combat 3 it's not only heating up the device making it very warm but the game is also exiting consistently when this happens. I don't have that issue with the Exynos based Note II so I'm leaning towards preferring the Exynos 5420 in the Note III. Btw, Exynos is fabbed by Samsung while Snapdragon is fabbed by TSMC. IMHO, Samsung fab is better.
Sammy will include HMP in their octacore processors through a software upgrade .so all samsung octacore devices will become true octacore devices
So guess which will have high performance? Real octacore exynos 5420 or sd800??

i don't think samsung gonna unleash that real octa core or HMP thingy for gn3..they will save it for gs5..

Nope.. check out sammobile, their samsung insider claimed that sammy will bring HMP for every exynos 5xxx processors (from s4 onwards ) ,so be happy
Also for s5 they are gonna bring 64 bit processing architecture, same like iphone 5s , so they don't wanna save it for s5

While a cool feature, I'm not sure how many CPU bottlenecks are going to be multithreaded to the point that adding the four slower cores will provide a substantial benefit. I also have concerns that with all eight cores running, heat throttling would kick in pretty quickly. My guess would be that, both in benchmarks and in real-world situations, the 800 is usually going to come out on top.
In HMP this is what really gonna happen:
Small processes like texting, calling , etc... low powered A7 cpu's will be switched
Big processes like gaming , Benchmarking , 1080p video capturing etc... both A7 and A15 cores will be combined together and throttle the device upto the max perfomance
So the device will be power efficient and we can clearly see the dominated benchmark scores and RLP over sd 800 (this would be pretty like the perfomance b/w a dual cored device and a quad cored device)

Ah... that means the Tmo version is most likely going to be the Quadcore version as it uses the Qualcomm version on every iteration of the Galaxy devices.
I was hoping for a little Octocore fun but, it'll be pointless if I can't use the cell radio
