So I went diving in the ocean and it only took one short swim under water and at about 7 or 8 feet depth my wrist vibrated and all I saw was the Sony company name like the watch is shutting off on its own. I freaked and went to shore. Opened the USB port to find it flooded. I have had it in rice for like 4 hours and it's still not working. (I know I'm not support to but since I can't remove the battery) I have a carbon skin on our which covers the back. Does the back of the sw2 have screws? Is there a way to disassemble the watch? I separated it from the chassis but no further. Gimme tips to revive my sw2.
Well, if i can say this nicely, it is not a device made for diving. It's more for washing hands and rain... Mine took a hit in the shower and i stuck it in rice with the USB port open and facing down and didn't touch it overnight... It has lines in the screen, but boots and functions fine... There are a few threads on disassembly, just search and be very careful.

Just following up in case anyone was curious: I cracked under the new update buzz and bought another SW2 from tigerdirect local store today (price matched $135 with newegg.com) I could not handle a few days with out my watch. I kept instinctively looking at my wrist and getting deprest with the lack of hard black & info on my wrist.
Anyways the old watch is still dead dispite spending 2 nights in rice bag and bathed in 92% rubbing alchohol. I've contacted sony and I'll keep you posted on what they decide on my warranty. They said they would look into it when they get the watch and see if they find a manufacturer defect. If so, they will replace the watch. If not they will mail the broken one back to me.

SmartWatch 2 is waterproof and dust-resistant in compliance with Ingress Protection rating IP57. This means that it can be used in any weather and be immersed in water for a certain length of time*. The SmartWatch 2 display is smooth and scratch-resistant.
*Avoid immersion in salt water or water containing any types of chemicals. The micro USB connector cover must be firmly closed.

I know it's too late, but salt water is harsh on just about anything. Even just getting a splash of salt water on it, should be immediately wiped off with fresh water. I'm thinking 7-8 feet may have been too deep to go into with the watch.
The SW2 is water and dust RESISTANT not dust and water proof. There is a difference. It is not meant to be submerged under water at all.

With a rating of IP57 the smartwatch 2 is dust proof, not dust tight; and is protected from dripping, splashing and spraying water. It also means that it has undergone a succesfull immersion test for 30 minutes while submerged, up to, 1 meter in (fresh) water.
Mailed to Sony. I'll let you know what they say.

So I wanted to clean up my SM2 this morning as I headed out for work. I unplugged it from the USB charger and proceeded to rinse it off in the sink... without closing the USB cover. Some amount of water got into the chassis.
The watch then proceeded to reboot several times, then the screen garbled, dimmed and the watch shut down completely. It would no longer turn on and looked to be bricked.
I let it dry out for a few hours then hit the micro USB port with some compressed air to get rid of any other moisture.
It still wouldn't boot and attaching the USB cable hooked into a charger did nothing.
Just out of a lack of anything else to try, I moved the USB cable to my laptop and the battery charging indicator came on. It booted up just fine after that and the watch is back to normal operation.
Not sure if this will help anyone down the line, but I though I'd share my stupidity.
Enjoy
I share my recomendation to not swim with the watch, I got a spot of water in my screen, if anyone knows how to open the watch let me know, thanks

ya know the USB port cover doesn't seem to be of a quality that I would trust actually keeping water out in submersion scenario, yet alone a swimming scenario.
Waterproof is a plus, but only for like splash when washing dishes or hands, accidental spill in a pool, etc.
I would sure as hell not purposefully shower with my watch and certainly not take a swim with it.
This watch is not designed for swimming in, no matter what you're told. It's OK to get it wet but any water pressure from swimming/diving etc. will exceed the water resistancy of the watch. PRO-TIP.
They guarantee its IP57
That means 5 is nearly dust untouchable so you can play in the desert. And the 7 means it is resistant to fully dunk it in water for a specific time (at least 10minutes says IPX7 More information from the company)
So i wouldnt risk swimming with it but i'd take a jump in my small pool in the garden for several minutes and i do not take it of when showering.
It is not resistant against salt Walter and Chlor in a bath might break the coloring of the case after time

The point of this thread was to show what I needed to do to get the watch working again after water entered the chassis.
Not sure why this turned into a submersion debate.
The watch is still working perfectly, BTW, but swimming aside, always close the USB cover before getting the sucker close to water. I think I lucked out.
All of this is meaningless.
In the Sony manual for product care it states "Do not expose your product to liquid or moisture or to humidity".
And in the warranty section, under what is NOT covered, it states "or damage resulting from liquid".
Get it wet, and you may not get warranty coverage.
It was raining quite heavily in the weekend and I was wearing my SW2 and the charging cover was firmly pressed in as I always make sure it is after every time I charge it and it got a bit wet and seemed to be working fine during the weekend after it had gotten wet but today I noticed that the top half of the screen isn't responding pretty much at all and I can very very rarely pull down the notification bar or swipe the screen using the top half of the display but I am able to press the icons in that part. I also noticed the light sensor has little bubbles of moisture in it. Would I be able to claim it under warranty seeing it is meant to be IP57 and should have been able to be worn in the rain?
Just file a claim, don't give then any more details than they need.

I'd probably try the 'ol bag of rice trick and then claim it on warranty if that didn't work . Hopefully they don't have any of those color changing moisture detecting indicators in there

Even if they do have the indicators they advertise it as water resistant, I would assume as long you don't tell them you went scuba diving with it or something crazy like that you should be good to go. That said I have never had to file a warranty claim on a Sony product before so I have no idea how much of a hassle they may give somebody.

It did start working perfectly fine yesterday but today its suddenly become unusable where just sliding along the screen its stuttering because its picking up my finger on and off rapidly and the capacitive buttons underneath aren't responding as much as they should so I think ill just do a warranty claim saying I was walking home in the rain and didn't bother about covering the watch because it was meant to be water resistant so I assumed it would be fine seeing my phone isn't water resistant and I use that in the rain with no problems. The watch is only 4 months old so id expect them to replace it which if I get a new one I may just look into selling it new and getting google wear when they're released haha

Just a small word of caution. Sony do not claim the watch to be water proof so don't use that term. The watch is water resistant only and then to a very low IP standard. IP57 is not very useful to a watch. Better than the Gear 1 though. I still maintain this is a major problem with a watch.
Good luck with your situation.

also, TS is not the first to report water damage after a shower
it might be true only a small batch of watches was affected with this "glue problem", but i'm not taking any chancces when it comes to water, wearing this watch in the shower (or worse) is an accident waiting to happen....
The same thing happened to me. I just pour some water to clean the watch when it was turned off yesterday. Today it begun not showing anything on screen and later its tactile display is no responding. Also, as some of you pointed, there is small drops of water in the light sensor.
I feel really disappointed...

I don't think it is a wise idea for others do that. That guy probably just got lucky and there may be some long term effects if any water logging occurs. This phone is not certified to be water resistant.

Both of the previous posters make good points. It's great that the phone appeared to work after being submerged, and it is indeed impressive if it was really able to remain active underwater for so long...However, it was obvious that water was slowly filling up the phone through the headphone jack, and it's likely there would be some long term damage due to possible corrosion and water being trapped. Also, there was no demonstration that the speakers, headphone jack, SD card, charging port, ect still worked.
Still, I'll take it for what it's worth. My S3 stopped working after 3 minutes of being outside in light drizzle, though it was later revived.
To me, that's like taking a wet $500 bill and throwing it into a fire, to see if it will burn.
If it burns, you're out 500 bucks. If it doesn't, you've gained NOTHING.
Stupid test.
from what i read somewhere, the htc one m8 is ipx3 rated. pretty much means that rain, splashes of water won't damage the phone. the whole submerged in water for 90 minutes deal, now thats a little extreme
EDIT: "The HTC One (M8) IPx3 rating means it's protected from water spray up to 60 degrees at 10l per minute, pressure of 80-100kN/m2 up to 5 mins" link here

Im not surprised, I dropped my Droid DNA in the lake and it sunk a couple feet before I could get it, and worked like a charm after that. Then later on when I tried to tear the phone down to replace the screen I found out it had a rubber seal around the outer edge of the phone.

On a similar note (pun intended) on vacation a couple weeks ago my wife was leaning over a tide pool. Her Note 3 slipped out of her coat pocket and into the tiny pool. The pool wasn't even hardly as deep and the phone is tall and she grabbed it right away and handed it to me. I immediately took the back cover off and removed the battery and dried it down with a towel. Yet, the screen still fried. The phone itself worked. I could hear it turn on and give notification. But the screen was dead. Luckily I was fast enough with the drying that no water damage stickers turned pink and I exchanged it under warranty.
My wife dropped her old Droid Incredible to the bottom of a full water trough. Did the little rice trick and it was fine.

The M8 is rated for IPX-3 liquid protection, which means it's protected from water spraying onto the phone at a pressure of 80-100kPa for five minutes at any angle up to 60 degrees from the vertical. It can handle a volume of 0.7 liters per minute.
I'm surprised HTC doesn't advertise this at all. Keep in mind, IPX-3 means you can walk through a rainstorm or a sprinkler system and be fine.
This is not the IP67 rating that the Galaxy S5 has, which does protect against light submersion in water (what the guy in the video did). IP55 of Sony's xperia line is even better, being capable of longer and deeper submersion.
I bet the phone would die quickly if he put a detergent in the water though.
Surfactants like detergents would make the water enter the speaker grills and other small holes.
I bet if he hit it with a ball peen hammer it would get water inside it through the cracks.
I saw this clip before i ordered my M8 unit, however if u keep searching, there is another youtube clip doing a comparison between the iphone 5s , galaxy s5 and the HTC m8. In one of the tests he makes a water test of submerging all 3 phones. The M8 did indeed kept on working BUT the speakers stopped playing music... something you dont see in this video...
so im guessing that the speakers will be the first to go when in fact tasting water...

[CONCLUSION]
Manual says soap is not advisable, but if you forget that you are wearing it while walking in to the shower its no problem.
Should I? Not unless it's something I CANNOT miss (probably the only time is if a baby is on the way). I can spare 5 seconds to take watch off and on.

The Gear 2 is water resistant up to 3 meters for 30 minutes. You could. I am not sure you should. What is the point of wearing the watch in the shower? I wouldn't because I have no reason too.
I wouldn't fret about walking to my vehicle in the rain however.

I wasn't saying that its not possible. I was pretty sure it would be fine since it's rated IP67 (one meter for 30 minutes), but I don't see the point.. wait.. Ahh.. hmm.. Are you watching porn on than tiny screen? lol

The speakers stop functioning if they get in contact with water (this also happens if you put your watch in glass of water. thereafter, the speakers don't work for a short time)
That's the only thing I've noticed so far

took mine for a dip in the hottub last night was in there for about 45 min just relaxing with some friends.
checked a few xda posts, text notifications ect ..
tested out music player on it , and as others stated it gets all muffled , just have to blow on speaker and its fine a few minuets later.
only thing I would worry about is long term affect from the chemicals in the hottub we run bromine in ours and over time it could degrade the plastic or the strap I'm thinking .
Chemicals in the water (shower, pool, hot tub) will eventually degrade the seals and you will end up with a brick. This is not a Suunto. And I doubt Samsung intended it to be exposed to water for long periods of time on a regular basis.

The user guide specifically says not to expose it to soapy water (as in a shower)! It also points out in the user guide that the pressure of the water may exceed standing water at 1m depth, for example in a waterfall, crashing waves in the sea....and I would think this would extend to a higher pressure shower. It also says that you should dry the watch whenever it has become wet!
It really is water resistant...NOT waterproof and certainly not intended for underwater operation.
I made 2 baths and a couple of showers with the gear 2 and everything is ok. I will take the gear of only in pool or at sea.

Exactly... I jog all the time and one thing I hated with the Gear 1 that it was not waterproof so I took a lot of time to clean it on the inside of the band since I tend to dress-up for work daily wearing the Gear. Plus being a real runner you will get caught in rain...but my sweat counts more than rain since I live in the HOT humid South.
So I shower in mind to clean it and I don't put soap directly on it but by all means I clean the stink of the nasty sweat off my arm and inner band of the watch...more water very mild amount of soap...same as I did with Gear 1 but never put it in the shower...
If Samsung is going to be serious about a workout gear then water, sweat, etc is part of it so if they say it can withstand water damn I am going to get it in water...if fails then why I have a warranty...
By all means if you work out in it please clean it...under the band can smell like an a$$ if you not cleaning ANY of your workout gear that includes the arm holder for my Note 3 when I jog....
OK, so i wear my watch from wake up to sleep.
I workout every day of the week, and have started to notice that my watch is smelly. I have taken bands off and soaked over night in soapy water and disinfectant to help. But it seems that it is the "watch" that is smelling.
Has anyone had this problem, and if so did you find a remedy. I have washed off, just afraid of spraying with any chemicals due to possible damage.
I have tried wiping off before and after each session with alcohol wipes, but doesnt seem to help much.

I never washed it. I got it 2 weeks ago and I'm afraid it will die. Got it from a Samsung Store for 150 bucks and was a bargain. I just want to ask, is the watch water resistant without the bands? because my bezel around the watch is a tiny bit loose. Is it normal if it's loose? Is it actually water resistant without bands?
Thanks, Fritz_Frigursson
OP, do you use the original leather straps? If yes, its totally normal.
Leather naturally smells like something stinky, and it gets worse since it absorbs sweats and holds it inside.
My advice : replace it with rubber straps, or metal.

I have some straps that i bought off Amazon, the OG straps that come with it ripped after a couple weeks, the screw holes come out, weird. And when i tried a warranty claim, was told only the actual device was covered not accessories. So I bought some. I might buy more, and just change them when i work out. or just take it off.
I have worn it many times in the shower. Even had soap on it. Nothing happened. I am using the gear s2 from October of last year and still loving it. Though had issues with the original strap glue coming off and the terrible customer support to get it replaced.
Washing
I wear mine all the time, apart from in the bath. Shower and hand washing no problem, give it an occasional rinse under the tap.
Before I got my S2, I went through a watch per year in the workplace. On a day to day basis, mine is subjected to dust, dirt, water, cement, plaster, silicon sealant, grease, never misses a beat and original strap.
