I don't think it is a wise idea for others do that. That guy probably just got lucky and there may be some long term effects if any water logging occurs. This phone is not certified to be water resistant.
But I was quite surprised nonetheless!

did speakers and usb still work???

Both of the previous posters make good points. It's great that the phone appeared to work after being submerged, and it is indeed impressive if it was really able to remain active underwater for so long...However, it was obvious that water was slowly filling up the phone through the headphone jack, and it's likely there would be some long term damage due to possible corrosion and water being trapped. Also, there was no demonstration that the speakers, headphone jack, SD card, charging port, ect still worked.
Still, I'll take it for what it's worth. My S3 stopped working after 3 minutes of being outside in light drizzle, though it was later revived.

To me, that's like taking a wet $500 bill and throwing it into a fire, to see if it will burn.
If it burns, you're out 500 bucks. If it doesn't, you've gained NOTHING.
Stupid test.

from what i read somewhere, the htc one m8 is ipx3 rated. pretty much means that rain, splashes of water won't damage the phone. the whole submerged in water for 90 minutes deal, now thats a little extreme
EDIT: "The HTC One (M8) IPx3 rating means it's protected from water spray up to 60 degrees at 10l per minute, pressure of 80-100kN/m2 up to 5 mins" link here

And what if that was mineral oil instead of water? That would explain it working. After all we didn't actually see him fill the sink.

Maybe . But...this isn't twitter...

Im not surprised, I dropped my Droid DNA in the lake and it sunk a couple feet before I could get it, and worked like a charm after that. Then later on when I tried to tear the phone down to replace the screen I found out it had a rubber seal around the outer edge of the phone.

On a similar note (pun intended) on vacation a couple weeks ago my wife was leaning over a tide pool. Her Note 3 slipped out of her coat pocket and into the tiny pool. The pool wasn't even hardly as deep and the phone is tall and she grabbed it right away and handed it to me. I immediately took the back cover off and removed the battery and dried it down with a towel. Yet, the screen still fried. The phone itself worked. I could hear it turn on and give notification. But the screen was dead. Luckily I was fast enough with the drying that no water damage stickers turned pink and I exchanged it under warranty.

My wife dropped her old Droid Incredible to the bottom of a full water trough. Did the little rice trick and it was fine.

The M8 is rated for IPX-3 liquid protection, which means it's protected from water spraying onto the phone at a pressure of 80-100kPa for five minutes at any angle up to 60 degrees from the vertical. It can handle a volume of 0.7 liters per minute.
I'm surprised HTC doesn't advertise this at all. Keep in mind, IPX-3 means you can walk through a rainstorm or a sprinkler system and be fine.
This is not the IP67 rating that the Galaxy S5 has, which does protect against light submersion in water (what the guy in the video did). IP55 of Sony's xperia line is even better, being capable of longer and deeper submersion.

I bet the phone would die quickly if he put a detergent in the water though.
Surfactants like detergents would make the water enter the speaker grills and other small holes.

I bet if he hit it with a ball peen hammer it would get water inside it through the cracks.

I saw this clip before i ordered my M8 unit, however if u keep searching, there is another youtube clip doing a comparison between the iphone 5s , galaxy s5 and the HTC m8. In one of the tests he makes a water test of submerging all 3 phones. The M8 did indeed kept on working BUT the speakers stopped playing music... something you dont see in this video...
so im guessing that the speakers will be the first to go when in fact tasting water...

I waterproof my M7, and it all worked fine. I literally tapped the water out of by speakers haha. And I could see the droplets bouncing thru the speaker grill. It was kinda cool.

[Q] Water Damaged

Jumped into the pool with it in my pocket. It spent about 10 seconds submerged. Popped the battery out as soon as possible and ran home and put it in a bag of rice for 2 days. Its working fine but the screen has these transparent black thingies in like the back that makes part of the screen darker at some parts at one angle but not at another. Looks like a coating. It looks kind of 3D. Just wondering if you can fix this by replacing the lcd. Also i was wondering, do you think I could sell it for $50-100 with the screen as is? Everything else is in working condition. Nothing gone wrong, just the screen.
Im willing to trade this and $200 for a galaxy nexus.

You can probly sell it for 100 easy if you keep it rooted depends on your area.
My first g2x fell in a bucket of water. It fell in a puddle of water fell under running water spilled juice on it by my son and more and still worked flawlessly lol guess I'm just lucky

I say try Craigslist first that's where I usually sell my stuff quick and easy no fees. And like I said also depends on your area. Here in NY you can get rid of it quick for a easy hundred maybe more of you catch someone that barely knows about it

Maybe, if you do what I did with your phone it will get your phone working again.
I resurrected an iBook which had a lot of water spilled into it. I partially disassembled it and sprayed non-conductive switch and contact cleaner into it until it was saturated with it (it poured out when I held it sideways). I left it sitting for a day then I thoroughly sprayed it with compressed air so that it blew through the insides. I put it back together and turned it on and it worked again perfectly. The switch and contact cleaner has to be safe for plastic or it will melt it. I used a can of IDEAL brand. Also, don't spray it in an enclosed place, do it outdoors because the fumes are very bad for you.
If you don't do that, replacing the LCD will cost much less than selling or trading your G2X and spending $200 on a Nexus.

Horror Stories

I know there are a lot of threads regarding dropped phones, bricked ones, soaked ones, scratched ones, etc. And I'm going to add another one... (feel free to close)
This thread is to talk about any accidents you've had with your phones, good and bad outcomes alike.
I rarely drop my phones but today I left my phone on the kitchen counter (like 4ft high) and I reached to get my phone and it fell face first onto my tile, bounced up, hit the corner, hit another corner, fell facedown again and slid two feet...
I had a cheapo rock tpu case and I'm glad to report that it probably saved my phone! not a scratch or dent anywhere!
Well...
A couple of weeks ago I accidentally stuck my keys in the same pocket as my phone. Luckily, the phone didn't get a single scratch from the incident. There is a long thread about it somewhere on this forum.
Today, however, when I went to clean my phone I noticed a really, really tiny scratch on the screen. I cleaned it yesterday too and it wasn't there. This means it came about for no good reason except that last night was Friday the 13th methinks. Anyway, the scratch is super tiny, and you can only see it when the phone is off and you use the screen as a mirror to see the sun or some other light source. I think a wet-application screen protector will get rid of it.
I haven't dropped it yet though! *knock on wood*
I was going to drive to Walmart and just i had to shut my car's door..my HOX accidentally slipped on my pant's pocket landing
exactly to the edge of the floor where the car's door would meet...and..I just **** pulled the door to closed..bam..bam..my beloved HOx
just got sandwich between the edges..luckily the door did not shut closed completely as my Hox was there to stoped it:crying:
well what do you know..may Hox survived ..but got a tiny bit of scratch only visible when you tilt the phone and turn the display off.
Painted my sis in laws house this weekend. Had my phone on the mantle of the fireplace where I was painting above. Rollers spray paint all over the place. . . phone has little speckles all over the screen. Not to mention I went too far down and hit my phone with the roller on the right side of the screen. . . can see 2/3 of the screen right now.
Luckily it is latex paint so hopefully I can just scrape it off without scratching the screen. . .

I had bought my One X on May 10th and on the 14th I went swimming and forgot that it was in my pocket. Tried putting it in rice and all that, but it was submerged for to long. Luckily my warranty replacement hasn't had to many problems, and the problems I did have was fixed with CleanROM.

PSA: S4's are robustly stressed before they go to retail (Video)

Water + electricity = bad
Impurities in water + water evaporating + micro electronics = broken
Really is that simple. Only way to water proof electronics is with conformal coatings then you induce heat issues and increase the size of the boards. There are water proof (well water resistant really) phones but they usually have a cost, spec and/or size tradeoff.
Seeing the video it looks like the phones will 'work' in a sense but obviously that is
1 a lab
2 not showing how long it will work
Usually the water
1 shorts the battery (not what happened there)
2 evaporates and leaves mineral deposits that shorts internal circuits
Obviously sometimes nothing bad happens. Personally I'll not take my chances lol.

I really do think that these phones are stressed tested pretty good, but I also think the makers of that video might have exaggerated just a bit too. I don't think the water test accurately reflects what would happen IRL to your phone an I wouldn't recommend anyone try it

i'm not too sure how they could of exaggerated the test, its pretty straight forward to me, submerge phone in water for 15 seconds, take it out. There are countless videos on youtube showing water drop tests, they all come to the same conclusion, the phone can survive the drop in water, it might just not survive when the water starts to evaporate and leave residues on the circuit board and hardware.if you leave it like that, if you put it in a bag of rice overnight, you have decent chances of rescuing it
video says that the actual quality\torture test may be different in "real" test environment and this is for commercial purpose only. So try not to believe it 100%. I'd still carry my phone like a baby.

Lol, hence me offering a dollar. I would love to have a "waterproof" phone, but in reality I'm not dealing with freshwater so it would have to hold up to salt. Which is disappointung that nobody has come out with a decent waterproof case for our phones. Instead concentrating on apple. Sigh....

Rescuing a phone or bringing it back to life after it drops into water if proper care is taken is one thing. The phone actually continuing to work while water is in contact with the battery and circuits is something different. Electronics (unless treated with sealant) simply do not work that way.

Please, you,re telling this to a guy that studied electrical engineering for 2 semesters in college. This has nothing to do with shorting out the battery, or components, this has to do with the phone being sealed in a proper way so this DOESN'T happen. Thats the point of the test. Plus, water is a TERRIBLE conductor of electricity, only the minerals in water make it conductive. This test was probably done in distilled water which has ZERO conductivity, so it could pretty much stay in water for minutes without shorting out the phone. Somebody in detroit, and somebody in California would not have the same chances of saving their phone if dropped, one has fresh water and the other salt water, and salt water is a good conductor

I'm not sure if you are just trying to argue for the sake of arguing but I clearly said I think the test might have been exaggerated. Your response was that you didn't think it was (your first bolded quote) and then you turn around and say it might have been (your second bolded quote where you said it might have been distilled water instead of regular water)? Using a non-common type of water sure looks like they might be exaggerating real life outcomes to me (as I said in my first bolded quote).
So I'm not sure but it looks like you are arguing with yourself?

No, thats because you have such a closed mind, you don't get the point of the test. ITS NOT ABOUT DROPPING THE TEST IN WATER AND SEE HOW MUCH TIME IT TAKES TO SHORT, ITS ABOUT SEEING HOW WELL THE PHONE IS SEALED AKA WATER NOT GOING UNDER LCD, AKA WATER NOT PENETRATING CAMERA LENS.........ETC. Do you get it yet? They are eliminating variables like conductivity to see how well the phone hold up against infiltration. If the phone holds up well against that, it doesn't matter if its dropped in a base solution or in acid.
I don't know about you guys, but all my toilets are filled strictly with distilled water.
Samsung has more money invested in phone dropping contraptions than every house on my block is worth.

Here is the website for those of us that don't speak Korean...
http://global.samsungtomorrow.com/?p=24643
It says nothing about using any kind of special water for that test. And I am still calling Bul***t! How about filming yourself dunking your phone into regular tap water for the exact amount of time that was done in that video and let's see the results? There is a thread about a guy that dropped his in water for a moment and he had to dry it out in rice for over 48+ hours before it worked properly again...

That is a real world result! And he was lucky it came back to life AFTER drying it out.

Anwyays... the Smartwatch 2 worked pretty fine for me so far.
Unfortunately, I experienced something strange yesterday.
Yesterday I noticed that the on/off button wasn't working properly anymore.
I wondered how this was possible, and then I noticed that the screen was a little bit lifted out of the case.
I could push the screen back in place, and the on/off button worked fine again too, although it seems it comes back up a little bit after a while.
I have seen this before in a video where they showed the watch at a conference, so it seems to be a common issue.
Does anyone have this too? and what did you do to solve it? Because I would hate to send it back.
Right now I'm actually waiting till it comes off a bit more, so I can place a little tip of glue beneath the screen (if there is a safe place for that beneath the screen), so it won't lift up again.
I had it too.
I put a little pinch of glue in the rear of the watch and all is good now.
its not the screen lifting. The actual watch hardware is glued into a frame of the wrist band. The glue is simply coming undone.
Yep, I've been able to completely push the watch out of it's frame.
Used some glue on the frame, and pulled it back in.
Let's hope it stays there now.
The glue that was on it already propably became loose when I took the watch under the shower?
Although... it should not do that, because it's waterproof.
Them problem as with mine, I got the watch off my arm and the clock pops out off the holding

Be warned. Mine was destroyed when it got wet.
They aren't very waterproof.

I've been under the shower for a few times with it, so it's definitely waterproof.
Although, that the glue came loose might be the result of that.

This is definitely BS. I shower with it every single day and didn't have any problem at all.

Maybe if you shower 50 minutes with boiling water... I repeat, I think I had like 60 showers with the watch on (and even pressing the power button or tinkering with the screen to change song etc.) and zero problems.

Not BS. I just received my replacement watch. I felt the original vibrate, looked down, and watched the screen fade out. Never to come back after 4 days of drying it out with a small fan on it.
I am rubbing silicone grease in the cracks and charge plug on the replacement. I ride a motorcycle year round. I need some water resistance and my first one had very little.
It's SONY.. What do you expect?

It's my first Sony device, so it's not a good device to impress people who are new to Sony hahaha.
But I love the Smartwatch though
SONY is for target practice. You spend about $750 on their latest technology and then have it work for about 2 years at the most, then put it up on a pedestal to play target practice with your new .9mm. You get to vent the frustrations of buying such an expensive and overpriced device and promise yourself you won't do it again.
When they talk about cheaply designed, overpriced, Chinese assembled items on Black Friday, they are talking about SONY.
I saw posts before about screens popping out, but thought it was just that and hoped it wouldn't happen to mine
wish I had read this topic before, I have the exact same thing, this build quality is REALLY poor
seems this is happening to quite a few people, I think they used the wrong glue
would certainly explain why the watch isn't waterproof for everyone
I have a problem with my watch, I broke the screen and I cant find the replacement, if you have a unusable sw2 maybe you can sell me the part that I need, please PM with any response, thanks

Water resistance experience

Has any brave soul tried this feature? If so give us your experience!
Personally I have not, knowing my luck my device would be the one with faulty ports/leaks ?
Some people have tried it and damaged their phone. Others have been fine. The phone is water resistant not waterproof so I would recommend against dipping it in water.

I personally placed my wife's S7 Edge screen under a running tap for a few seconds. Phone still works fine. Having said that the iPhone 6S has some great water resistant features and it doesn't even have an IP rating. Yet my old iPhone 5s died after siting in a little puddle of water on the bathroom basin bench, which was barely as deep as the back cover. At least with some certified proof of water resistance protection on the S7's, I won't be taking mine swimming or showering, but its surely great to know that it could
handle some very common water contact.
If it spoils easily regardlessof having water resistance why does samsung make all these ads with lil john dunking his phone in the aquarium and whatnot. Theyre tempting us to do so and if the phone is broken they should never void the warranty as long as it adheres to the phone being not deeper than 1.5 meters for not longer than 30 mins
As above, i've run mine under the tap a few times and it's been fine. I've never submerged it though, I don't dare yet. I also don't have a need to, so don't anticipate I will anytime soon.
I finally had it tested and it was an accidental situation which makes it seem useful and not just intentionally testing it for the sake of it. We left my wife's S7 on the coffee table and there was a cup of water on there. We came back and the water got knocked over, the phone was kind of in a puddle of it. I was actually excited to test it, but pissed that my cat has been ****ing with filled cups of water lately.
Tried dipping it while i was in the gym pool lol charged it after 2 hrs moisture detected, wiped the inside with some tissue all good ?

I use it to watch the news in the shower every day, and I tested under running water for a few minutes when I first got it. Water proofing is the biggest single reason why I bought this phone. If it doesn't work as advertised, I would have returned it. This thing is designed to handle water, so don't be afraid. I wouldn't swim with it, but a couple of drops of water from the shower or caught out in a rain storm, are nothing to worry about.
It is sold as a waterproof phone, not just water resistant. IP68 means full submersion in water, up to 5 feet for 30 minutes. That is waterproof. If the device fails from less than that, Samsung would legally have to replace it for you under warranty.

that's all true but they get you with the "water pressure" crap. running it under a slowly pouring tap should be fine, but running it under heavy/fast flowing water flowing from the tap could be a problem, also the entire submersion thing, drop it in slow it should be fine, throw it in water and it could cause issues.
The IP68 rating is simply a bonus for me. I will treat it no differently than any other phone but it's good to know that, should an accident occur, and it ends up in the sink or something similar, it should be alright. Being able to use it in the rain is quite nice too. However, people who put their new phone in a bowl of water the day they get it to prove some sort of point deserve any issues they end up with.
1.5m 30mins. With that rating i would say it's safe to bring it with you when you swim(not dive), and would not recommend to bring it to snorkel. I saw someone dropped their phone to a 40 feet river.. that for sure are gonna break the phone..

BTW, make sure you never subject it to soapy water. Its water resistance relies on the surface tension of the water. Soap lowers water's surface tension, allowing the water to flow into places it normally wouldn't, as this guy found out the hard way:

doing the same as you better to test the warranty while its still hot
it froze on me on 2nd shower, high pressure test video recording but im sure it was the fact that ive got like 5% space left on the memory.
I also run it under cold fast water if it heats up, i do block the charge port, then its cooled down enough for some day charging...
its quite a well built phone and I would be shocked if it does get water damage, but im worried, samy warranty is good service.
I couldn't resist testing this out. After all, if it's not working as advertised I'd want a replacement. So I filled up the sink and then carefully placed the phone at the bottom. The screen doesn't work while under water but once I took it out everything was back to normal. Awesome feature!
I don't need the water resistance features of the phone, but I do believe that if it's water resistant then it's less likely for moisture and corrosion to hamper with buttons, contacts and other internals. I had 3-4 phones with unresponsive power buttons over time, so if Samsung used good, oxidation-resistant materials for water resistance purposes then it will probably be beneficial for overall mechanical health of the phone as well.
Anyone else have any experiences to share?
Was at a party this past weekend with a lot of friends. I had my phone in my hand, browsing something, and my buddy asked what phone I had. When I told him it was the S7 Edge, he promptly entered Lil Wayne mode and poured his beer onto my phone. Laughs were had. Took it to the bathroom and rinsed it under the sink for a few seconds, and all is well.

If someone did this to my phone without my consent I would enter Bruce Lee mode with them.
Ontopic: I tested my phone a lot. When I first got it I washed it with clean water everyday. I also washed it with soap a few times, I never had any problems.
After I received my dbrand skin I also washed it a couple of times, once with soap as well, to make sure the skin is water resistant (it is).
Now that the "new toy" syndrome has passed, I use my phone normally, but if someone asked me to take a selfie while the phone is underwater, I would do it
Dropped my phone in the bath and continued to leave it in there to show it off to the mrs as her iphone can't do it. Screen came out working fine including buttons, however the speaker was very distorted which kinda made me panic but it dried out overnight and all was well in the morning.
Needless to say I never lost my nerve round my partner and kept echoing your iPhone can't do that....

Haha, well since it was in my hand it's not like it got very wet. With the water resistance, I really didn't care. Gave me my first opportunity to test it out.
My son wanted to get a video underwater at the pool last weekend.
