uh oh. I think I just bricked my m8 - Verizon HTC One (M8)

So, I ran firewater and wanted to get to recovery. I ran the adb command "adb boot recovery" and I get a screen with a phone with a red triangle and exclamation point in the middle. Is there a way out of this?
Please help.

That's just the stock recovery. Hold the power button down until the device reboots.

I held vol up and power and got out of it. phew. thx

i was gonna damn already :silly:

man, people REALLY need to understand what a BRICK is...

No, I understand what a brick is, i just haven't seen this screen before. What i didn't understand was that this is what Verizon's stock recovery looks like.

I'm not giving him hell..
I just feel if you are going to risk bricking your phone, you should at least know what the stock recovery looks like so we don't get cluttered with threads about people thinking they "bricked" their phone when it is on....
a brick means just that, it's a brick.
doesn't turn on, doesn't charge, notta.
I am glad the OP got his phone working though.
I just feel that S-OFF is very dangerous and I think people need to do some more research before diving in.. If you can't tell the difference between a stock recovery and a brick.. well - IMHO you shouldn't be S-OFF yet.
I am entitled to my opinion. But in no way was I giving him hell nor looking down on him, he created the thread, I gave an opinion; this is a forum after all.

I agree with you. Why do you guys think its called a "brick"?! If someone does not understand basic concepts like adb, flashing, and bricks, they should not be trying to s-off their phone.

i agree with that too. so many noobs

To many noobs.. We were all once. Been doing this for a few years. Just tried to upload a CWM backup and couldn't. Didn't realize I had to zip it first. I've done things much more complicated but couldn't do that. We'll all be noobs at something, no matter what. XDA is for noobs as much as for anyone else. Noob.. What a funny word anyway lol. No sir, you didn't slab your phone if it still has a ring to it.

knowing I didn't brick my phone,
I can't get into any recovery. when I press the volume up and power, I get the white HTC splash screen for a second then black.
I was trying to restore a nandroid from TWRP.

I have S-OFF... now what?

I too have a US T-Mobile Sensation with S-OFF. I'm not an expert or dev but also not a stranger to flashing recoveries, custom roms, etc.
I've had it for weeks now, just never thought to check for S-OFF! Oops
Guessing I can't do much at this point as no one has developed a custom recovery...?

THe proper thing to do would be to let me trade you out for this brand new s-on device. You dont want the hassle of dealing with one of those s-off devices.. I wouldn't feel right if i didn't at least offer the trade. What can i say i'm just a nice guy.

You lucky duck...
S-OFF is not in a good spot right now ,here are some reason why you might want to sell for a little more and get the S-ON :
1) You might brick your phone since it's new and don't know what you doing
2) not a whole lot to flash at this point
3) you busy flashing while we S-ON are having fun with Sense 3.0
How do you check for S-ON/OFF?

Is it normal to have so many s-off devices turning up? How are regular customers through retail getting s-off devices? Just seems strange to me.

He said he's had it for weeks, which means it wasn't a retail device.
Why must he sell away his phone just cause its S-OFF?
Even without S-ON he can still enjoy Sense 3.0
He can just wait till there are mods that he wants to have on his phone, till then he can just enjoy his phone
Good thing for him is just that he doesnt have to go through the hassle of getting his phone from S-ON to S-OFF
Don't bother selling your phone

know you go PARTY !!!
Enjoy having s-off. Root it and have fun with root apps.
If you want to join the flashing fun check out the CWM WIP thread (nandroid backup isn't working at the mo, but it is usable).
Its fairly easy to unbrick. if you extract a rom.zip from a RUU (I keep mine on a spare SD card for fastboot).

So pleased to have full root and Play Store!
My Nabi 2 had the android update and the root ran with lots of errors, but I have already installed an app from the Play Store ( Titanium Backup free ) and am running it now....
Now to see if I can get GL to SD to run, and then get a 32GB MicroSDHC card...
Sigh...
I am so sorry, I forgot to say THANKS! Mad props! If I wasn't so broke ( can't even pay my bills right now ) I would definitely donate...
But..
You made poor me SO HAPPY!
Worked prefect for me as well. She is going to be happy her missing apps\games are back. Titianium restored her progress on games from her Nabi1, worked like a champ.
Thanks again.

I tried it a couple of times last night and had to end up doing a recover to get my apps back. Did any of you that successfully rooted your nabi do the software update? Just think they might have changed something in the update to fix the root exploit. If anyone else is able to get their nabi rooted could you please post your log from Bin4ry's program.

Doing a reboot a couple times brings your apps back. It will error out throughout the process. But at the end will say successful. If it doesnt first try reboot a couple times to get your data back then try again. I am not the creator of the exploit as I noted so it might be better to ask bin4ry. But I have 2 nabi's and this worked on both. Before and after update. I did have to reroot after update though

My only experience is abd stuff and a little small tiny bit of theming for htc sense using the kitchen. Modding the settings menu just sounds so much harder. Or should I say so much easier to mess something up bad.

But if you don't flash every ROM your never know if your "satisfied" with an inferior ROM. I love AOKP but I still flash every ROM that gets posted for this phone. I find myself going back to AOKP more often than not because it suites my taste and style. But by flashing other things I can honestly say that it's my preference. To me it's a way of eliminating ignorance.

If you guys are flashing all the time, do you actually *use* your phones?
Just curious. Takes me a couple of hours to get everything back the way I had it... the OP sounds like he wants to flash something every day. lol
My wife's phone I rooted and removed most of the bloatware and that's all she wants me to do and that's all *I* want to do to it.
You know I think Blue Star ointment will cure most itches you can get.

Usually the best thing in this case is to have a daily phone and a second phone to do the flashing on. Once I found a favorite rom that works best for me I stop flashing frequently except updates of the rom. It's also easier when you have a rom that support multiple devices that you own.

[TOOL][BRICK]One-Click AutoBrick

For years, people have relied on complicated manual methods to brick their devices - including, but not limited to:
Generally not knowing what they are doing
Flashing stuff designed for other devices, especially bootloaders
Following guides written for other devices and writing stuff to random partitions like /dev/block/mmcblk0p4
Rebooting to recovery with a non-working recovery
Wiping data from the bootloader or the Settings menu with a non-working recovery
Messing around with nvflash
This tool simplifies the process tremendously - just install and run the app, type "I AGREE" and click the inviting auto-brick button. Done! Your tablet is now an expensive paperweight. Bricking your device has never been easier!
For advanced users, there are even more options to break your device, including powerful exclusive wipe commands that transcend the wiping capabilities of the common recoveries. There is even UltraWipe (TM) which clears every bit from your eMMC - your device has never been this clean!

Damn i was trying to brick this device since i got it in 2012 and now good brick tool it's finally here....thx _that. :good::laugh:
Yes! Finally a method to get my final setup once and for all in seconds! And I was so damn stupid forcing power off during bootloader flash...
So it's a definitive hard brick? Even nvflash with my blobs won't help? I want to be sure my nightmares will be gone with all my problems. They won't go away if there's still a chance to get tf700 working again
When I will get bored with using my tablet as a pad for my coffee mug there will be only one question to answer - will it blend?
I still prefer to do it the hard way, but great work none the less. :highfive:
I would have posted in the support thread, but there isn't one. :silly:
Why we have to go through all of these troubles...:crying: Just give it a good bubble bath with power on and that is it....:silly::victory:

I wouldn't even know how to brick it so hard that even nvflash doesn't work. According to the AndroidRoot guys, you can wipe your bootloader and still recover with nvflash. I don't want to try if it can recover from UltraWipe.

Thanks for the warning, but if you posted a serious question in THIS thread, you outed yourself anyway [emoji12]
Seriously - either find a thread that is similar to your problem or start a new thread in the Q&A section. And we will need a lot more information to be able to help:
What rom/recovery/bootloader are you on?
What happened to "brick" your tablet?
What have you tried to do etc etc
Again: do not answer here! Provide as much and as detailed information as possible in an approbriate thread in the approbriate part of the forum.
We'll find you and help if we can....
WTF
WTF I can't believe it. I just bricked my device.
I'm suing the **** outta yew
I really need a "check for brick" app. I keep trying UltraWipe and it's just not working. What am I doing wrong?

[Q] Wanting to root my N5

Finally decided i want to root my N5 and maybe install a custom rom, but new to this stuff. I read its not advised to root using the toolkits so looking for the proper way to do it.
Also i read that rooting wipes all data so is there a way to backup all my apps and data before i do this?
Thanks for any help

Never understood this advice other than the purists out there who suggest old style. Fine, if something screws up using a toolkit (never happened to me) I'll just take their advice then.
50 page thread of satisfied users. That should say something about those nasty toolkits.

I've been rooting since the HTC Desire days and I've used the old way and toolkits too. Basically there is no wrong or right way to root. Main thing is especially for someone new to rooting is read up about first before attempting to go ahead and root your device. :good:

because do you how many threads are created by people who use toolkits saying "it didnt work", "my phone is bricked!?!?!?!" or something along those lines?
if you understand the process, its:
1) much easier to explain to you how to fix something
2) if something fails, you know exactly where it is
3) This post

The number of people bricking phones doing it the long way far exceeds the toolkit casualties. The long, traditional way not only increases the chance for screw-ups but turns off many who would otherwise like to try.
Yes, you can do it the easy way while catering to people's laziness. If something does screw up help is available here, at least from those who don't finger point and say told you so and refuse to help.
There is a level of understanding needed to be a rooted user. Toolkits negate that but many of those users end up in trouble as an indirect result.
It's true, it's easier to help an understander. People who don't understand usually read other stuff that's wrong when trying to fix issues and make things even worse. It's just best all round to understand. People who are too lazy to understand or don't want to understand:
1) shouldn't be rooted users
2) shouldn't be on xda. The whole point of this forum is to promote understanding. Share knowledge. Not come here for panic help or quick fixes, so yes - we recommend avoiding Toolkits. We'll try to help but when a response is "what's fastboot", well I'm on the road to losing patience.
There are plenty of "help me urgent" and "simply cool my phone" forums. That is not what this place is about. Fine, be lazy. Use a toolkit but at least bother to understand what you're doing and read the threads with salient information because we haven't all got time to spoon feed

This thread is way off track....but I just had to post anyway. Lol
XDA is about learning.....it isn't a store, and some come here to "supe up" their phone, yet want to expend as little effort as possible in doing so. They won't search, or read or try to learn anything. They just want quick and easy answers to make their phone more awesome..... And give nothing back to the community in the process.
XDA is a place to gain and share knowledge. Not a store for cool things that are free.
So, much kudos to the opening poster for actuality wanting to learn, instead of taking the quick and easy route. Great to see! ?
