[Q] Wanting to root my N5 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Finally decided i want to root my N5 and maybe install a custom rom, but new to this stuff. I read its not advised to root using the toolkits so looking for the proper way to do it.
Also i read that rooting wipes all data so is there a way to backup all my apps and data before i do this?
Thanks for any help

Never understood this advice other than the purists out there who suggest old style. Fine, if something screws up using a toolkit (never happened to me) I'll just take their advice then.
50 page thread of satisfied users. That should say something about those nasty toolkits.

I've been rooting since the HTC Desire days and I've used the old way and toolkits too. Basically there is no wrong or right way to root. Main thing is especially for someone new to rooting is read up about first before attempting to go ahead and root your device. :good:

because do you how many threads are created by people who use toolkits saying "it didnt work", "my phone is bricked!?!?!?!" or something along those lines?
if you understand the process, its:
1) much easier to explain to you how to fix something
2) if something fails, you know exactly where it is

The number of people bricking phones doing it the long way far exceeds the toolkit casualties. The long, traditional way not only increases the chance for screw-ups but turns off many who would otherwise like to try.
Yes, you can do it the easy way while catering to people's laziness. If something does screw up help is available here, at least from those who don't finger point and say told you so and refuse to help.

There is a level of understanding needed to be a rooted user. Toolkits negate that but many of those users end up in trouble as an indirect result.
It's true, it's easier to help an understander. People who don't understand usually read other stuff that's wrong when trying to fix issues and make things even worse. It's just best all round to understand. People who are too lazy to understand or don't want to understand:
1) shouldn't be rooted users
2) shouldn't be on xda. The whole point of this forum is to promote understanding. Share knowledge. Not come here for panic help or quick fixes, so yes - we recommend avoiding Toolkits. We'll try to help but when a response is "what's fastboot", well I'm on the road to losing patience.
There are plenty of "help me urgent" and "simply cool my phone" forums. That is not what this place is about. Fine, be lazy. Use a toolkit but at least bother to understand what you're doing and read the threads with salient information because we haven't all got time to spoon feed

This thread is way off track....but I just had to post anyway. Lol
XDA is about learning.....it isn't a store, and some come here to "supe up" their phone, yet want to expend as little effort as possible in doing so. They won't search, or read or try to learn anything. They just want quick and easy answers to make their phone more awesome..... And give nothing back to the community in the process.
XDA is a place to gain and share knowledge. Not a store for cool things that are free.
So, much kudos to the opening poster for actuality wanting to learn, instead of taking the quick and easy route. Great to see! ?

[Q] How to downgrade my Desire s from ICS back to GB

Hey all im new to posting here so if I have posted in the wrong section I do apologise in advance also im not very technically minded when it comes to Android so if i seem quite newbish please don't hate, I recently upgraded my desire s to ICS using HTC ruu becuase vodaphone UK where taking the absolute mick in rolling out the ICS update so i did it myself but now i want to re root my phone but am unable to find any infomation on how to root a ICS desire s the only info i can come up with is if i am on gingerbread so i see no alternative then downgrading back to GB to root my phone i have a gingerbread vodaphone uk kernal but have no idea how to flash my phone with it so i was wondering if anyone could help me either root my ICS desire s or downgrade my desire s back to GB so then i can root it easily cheers for the help in advance
here, read this

reading the index thread is highly recommended before proceeding as to know what is it exactly u are doing at each step.
I agree that ubadito should have read and make sure he understood what he was doing and where he was going before blindly proceeding to flash the ICS RUU. Too many people go headfirst into flashing a RUU or a custom ROM without asking themselves a minimum set of questions and make sure they have the answers before proceeding : Will I loose my data, and how to avoid it if I don't want to ? Will I be able to go back to my previous ROM in case of problems with the new one ? Will I loose my warranty ? What is the best path to follow for me ?
I sometimes think that SimonTS is a bit rude with is answers, but I must agree with him on the substance of is message. If there were less people asking the same basic questions again and again it would be easier for everyone to find the information they are looking for instead of wasting time reading the same questions again and again.
That said, @ubadito you can indeed gain root without having to go back to GB first. Here are the steps to follow :
- HTCdev unlock your bootloader. This is now mandatory for you as your on ICS ; even if you'd want to go back to GB you'd have to unlock your hboot. You had the choice to S-OFF without HTCdev unlock before flashing the ICS RUU but now it's too late and, if your DS is still under warranty, you will loose it.
- flash 4ext recovery by using fastboot ; you can use 4ext Recovery Updater in order to download the recovery image on your DS, but it won't be able to install it. You'll have to copy it on your PC and flash it with fastboot.
- flash SuperSU from 4ext recovery.
You'll then be able to get root access on your DS and modify your build.prop in order to correct the link issue.
All those steps are explained in detail on XDA. All you have to do is read the stickies and make sure you understand before going on.

You've only been a member here for a month so I really don't think that you are in a position to do something like that - I quite willingly take criticism from some of the people on here (they are well aware who they are) and admit when I am wrong.
I have had enough of trying to point people in the right direction when they refuse to search or read first. I'll leave it for all the recent comers to the forum who haven't got annoyed enough yet with the same repeated questions over and over again, or who actually feel that they look good by getting a "Thanks" on their meter.
I will continue to attempt to help those who have a genuine question which couldn't be answered quickly by searching, but the others can flounder in whatever mess they get themselves into as far as I'm concerned.
When I first joined XDA it was to assist in gaining S-Off and root on my DS - back then the only way to achieve this was with a piece of hardware called an XTC-Clip - and if you didn't follow the instructions perfectly and know/understand EXACTLY what you were doing then you were almost guaranteed to end up with a brick. I didn't go posting stupid questions or asking people to tell me step-for-step what I had to do. I read the stickies, read the threads, found out what the pitfalls were, what I needed to prepare in advance, what might happen, how to get round it - and then after about 3 weeks of solid reading I went ahead and gained S-Off and root with no problems.
There are some really good people on the DS forums still, but the majority have moved on to new devices, as I have. I despair for the future of XDA if the current trend continues - it's not just on the DS forums, but is widespread across the entire site and the Mods don't seem to be willing/able to clamp down and do what should be done to prevent this place destroying itself.
I didn't mean to offend you. My apologies if I did. As I tried to say I agree with you and I really appreciate your contributions. English is not my mother tongue and I may have used inappropriate words.

[TOOL][BRICK]One-Click AutoBrick

For years, people have relied on complicated manual methods to brick their devices - including, but not limited to:
Generally not knowing what they are doing
Flashing stuff designed for other devices, especially bootloaders
Following guides written for other devices and writing stuff to random partitions like /dev/block/mmcblk0p4
Rebooting to recovery with a non-working recovery
Wiping data from the bootloader or the Settings menu with a non-working recovery
Messing around with nvflash
This tool simplifies the process tremendously - just install and run the app, type "I AGREE" and click the inviting auto-brick button. Done! Your tablet is now an expensive paperweight. Bricking your device has never been easier!
For advanced users, there are even more options to break your device, including powerful exclusive wipe commands that transcend the wiping capabilities of the common recoveries. There is even UltraWipe (TM) which clears every bit from your eMMC - your device has never been this clean!

Damn i was trying to brick this device since i got it in 2012 and now good brick tool it's finally here....thx _that. :good::laugh:
Yes! Finally a method to get my final setup once and for all in seconds! And I was so damn stupid forcing power off during bootloader flash...
So it's a definitive hard brick? Even nvflash with my blobs won't help? I want to be sure my nightmares will be gone with all my problems. They won't go away if there's still a chance to get tf700 working again
When I will get bored with using my tablet as a pad for my coffee mug there will be only one question to answer - will it blend?
I still prefer to do it the hard way, but great work none the less. :highfive:
I would have posted in the support thread, but there isn't one. :silly:

I wouldn't even know how to brick it so hard that even nvflash doesn't work. According to the AndroidRoot guys, you can wipe your bootloader and still recover with nvflash. I don't want to try if it can recover from UltraWipe.

What happened to "brick" your tablet?
What have you tried to do etc etc

uh oh. I think I just bricked my m8

So, I ran firewater and wanted to get to recovery. I ran the adb command "adb boot recovery" and I get a screen with a phone with a red triangle and exclamation point in the middle. Is there a way out of this?
Please help.

I just feel if you are going to risk bricking your phone, you should at least know what the stock recovery looks like so we don't get cluttered with threads about people thinking they "bricked" their phone when it is on....
a brick means just that, it's a brick.
doesn't turn on, doesn't charge, notta.
I am glad the OP got his phone working though.
I just feel that S-OFF is very dangerous and I think people need to do some more research before diving in.. If you can't tell the difference between a stock recovery and a brick.. well - IMHO you shouldn't be S-OFF yet.
I am entitled to my opinion. But in no way was I giving him hell nor looking down on him, he created the thread, I gave an opinion; this is a forum after all.

WARNING: FLASH AT YOUR OWN RISK
As always I am not responsible for any damage you do to your device.
This is for folks to explore at this point and possible develop any root and/or bootloader exploits. Of course if you have an emergency this might be nice to have too.
This should ideally recover your phone back to stock, however, it is unlikely that this will reset any counters, e-fuses, and/or q-fuses that may trip due to tinkering with the phone.

Root baby....root!!!
Show them what you got XDA developers!
Next steps for those who are going to try to find a root method:
1. Download tar
2. Find start addresses and offsets
3. Analyze with your favorite analysis program
4. Check for kernel source
5. Check if kernel is patched for all known vulnerabilities
6. Start irc channel for galaxy s5
7. Gather devs with S5 and discuss possible methods of attaining root

Thank you for outlining this as I wouldn't even know where to start.
Having said that - we have a channel on freenode: http://webchat.freenode.net/ - #SGS5
Any guides to get me started on looking at addresses and offsets. I know I am capable, just have to learn what I am looking for and what tool to use (Windows preferably). I am guessing that we are looking for empty space in the memory that can be written to?
A few of the devs I know who could crack this don't want anything to do with a Verizon SGS5. The advice I get is go buy an dev or unlocked version. I can't necessarily blame them as they get crapped on when they put lots of work into something like this. Especially with little to no payout.

Very excited to see what turns out. I have no developing background but am desperately in need of root. Moral support being sent your way :good:
Root and Recovery
I have very little experience rooting devices. This I was hoping to make my first. The download booster along with the camera were major selling points but Big Red removed the download booster. I was able to find the download booster through an alternate launcher, but can't change the mobile network type to get it to function.
Hopefully there will be a root so I can use the tethering and use the download booster.
Why in hell was this moved to general ?
It is the very first step in making a rom, rooting, or finding a way to weasel in a boot method.
It is everything to do with development, and nothing to do with general.

I moved the thread some time ago, as I personally do not believe uploading of stock firmware is development. I personally feel all stock firmware should be maintained in a single thread in general.
This "noob mod" has rooted or unlocked (as in found the vulnerabilities and written the exploit, not just running someone else's exploit) more devices than anyone in this thread, and most people in this community.
Pretty sure I know what the first steps are in researching and developing exploits, probably more so than anyone posting here.
This kind of insult and behavior is one of the reasons people with the ability to develop these exploits are stepping away from doing so publicly. Continuing this kind of behavior, were going to start ending up with fewer and fewer people willing to work on such projects.
Good luck on your endeavor.

Please talk to your Devs again...since the payout (even though I know all won't, but I would still expect 75%) is now almost $9,000 to find root...and I'm sure no one would crap on them for this!

Q&A for [ROM]BenczeOS v 1.0 Umad - 11s based - feature loaded - December 1, 2014
Some developers prefer that questions remain separate from their main development thread to help keep things organized. Placing your question within this thread will increase its chances of being answered by a member of the community or by the developer.
Before posting, please use the forum search and read through the discussion thread for [ROM]BenczeOS v 1.0 Umad - 11s based - feature loaded - December 1, 2014. If you can't find an answer, post it here, being sure to give as much information as possible (firmware version, steps to reproduce, logcat if available) so that you can get help.
Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!
Hi, i tried this rom and liked it but the top of my screen has like a red border, at the start it was small and then it covered the whole status bar, i wiped everything before installing and installed using TWRP, any idea what it might be?
Thanks

I tried this ROM and my Google play will not allow me to install simple app called credit karma, says not compatible with my device. Then looked into other apps and it did the same thing.

This rom has nothing to do with Google play. You can't possibly believe that. It amazes me, that the first thought that pops into your head is "it must be the rom". In future please refrain from random nonfactual information out of no where. If you have a legit problem please refer to what I have asked you to do in the op and I will be happy to assist you .
ok. if you say so. i will try again and see what i did wrong.
for me its a new device and i do love what you have done with it. i was fussing with it for a good 4 hours before i went back to stock.

I just took the time to reinstall this ROM.
This is what I got when I tried to install these two apps.

I understand you take loads of pride in your work.
I also understand there are many out there that don't know what they are doing. With this phone, I'm back to noob status, though not new to flashing and mods.
Just reporting back issues. This issue is not present with the stock ROM. it's not a deal breaker.
I'm scared to ask how to get multi window working. LoL

The only thing I can suggest is to revert the build prop density from 361 to 480.
Multiwindow is mentioned in the op
Hey Mark do we have to use xposed?... Multi-window would be cool but I've heard so many bad things with xposed... I'm going to download this bad boy and give it a go... 8)

Shouldn't have any issues at all. I am however trying to do it without xposed for an update if I can!
I would say Xposed is a good thing in general, the modules might be a problem and not every module is working with every device and ROM. The main problem for now is that it doesn't work with Art. So when we want to use Lollipoop we can't use Xposed, at least as long as there is no Xposed for Art.
