My wife said she dropped her week old Note 3 in the parking lot. She said when it hit the ground the battery came out and got run over by a car. The outer glass is still good and is not broken. The inner LCD/digitizer is completely destroyed. Also the back plate where the battery goes is cracked across the phone and the battery is shot. When you look down the side of the phone it looks bent ever so slightly. All I can get out of her is “I just dropped it”. Does not sound like it to me. When I put in my battery it will power on and I can hear the sounds like it powered up. But then it shuts back down. No display at all will show up.
Does it sound like there is more than just the LCD/Digitizer broken? I called Samsung repair and they said it would be $216 for the display but did not know if anything else would need replacing. Should I send it to Samsung or is it a total loss?
Its best to have the digitizer and LCD replaced, did you not get insurance?

I hope for $216 it's for both LCD and digitizer. Yeah I got insurance through squartrade. Just don't know if Samsung will say it's BER. Or just send it to squaretrade for repair. Or take it locally in Houston. Would like to have original Samsung parts back in it though.

Can u post pics of it sounds awesome experience. I think it will need more than just digitizer replacement if I were u I would consider it as total loss and put it in house as museum so everyone in the house will learn from it's experience.
Btw, what kind of protection that it had on accident ? no case at all ?
Ouch! Story does sound a bit unlikely, indeed... You could try to claim it on contents insurance... just tell them it happened on your own property.

Out of curiosity, is there even a case that protects against being driven over by a car? And if so, where can I buy it?

I would like to know how that happened as well. If you look at the phone it doesn't look like there is anything wrong with it. If you look at the display at an angle you can see a spider web of black lines where the LCD/digitizer is smashed.
It didn't have any protection since it was only a week old. The slim armor and Nillkin screen protector was on order and was in transit. Just a little too late.
Mate, go with Squaretrade... Whats the point of having insurance then paying out a buttload of cash to fix it?
Would you, if you had an accident, go to your cars manufacturer to fix it and pay through your teeth or go through your car insurer?

I am going to go with my insurance. I have a choice to have it repaired locally or send it to Samsung and get reimbursed. Or send it to squaretrade repair center and not pay. Just hear a lot of negative about there repair center. Has anyone used Samsung repair center?

Seen successful drive over tests for Griffon survivor and otterbox armor on YouTube. Was with the puny iPhone though and you can't get a genuine griffon for the note 3.
Depends on the speed of the car too I guess since force = mass x speed.

Bother! I would've really liked such a case!
Considering there are harddrives you can run a tank over without causing damage, it should theoretically be possible to make such a case for a smartphone. While we're at it, bulletproof and waterproof would be nice too.

Not to get too geeky but F(orce) = M(ass) x A(cceleration), not speed.
Also, the force horizontally (the main one influenced by acceleration) would only have a negligable effect on the vertical force exerted on the phone.

You are correct.
But another thing to consider is that cars are made to exert greater downward forces at higher speeds to get better grip.
Also consider that the mass of an object increases as its velocity increases.
Thus, a faster car would still exert more downward pressure on the phone.
Couldn't resist.

Yes she will be getting the otterbox defender. Don't care how big it is. I will tie it around her neck if I have to.
Sorry about you wife's phone. I hope you can get it repaired at not too dear a price.
Sounds like something that would happen to me, to be quite honest I am a dropper.
My daughter had her iPhone hit by two cars in an Otterbox defender. The case was a loss, the phone was fine. We are all Otterbox cases all the time for just that reason.

Well, I dropped my Samsung Galaxy S4 Active onto a concrete sidewalk. I am not as careful as I should be since I would drop my SII without worry since I had the Ballistics case on it. My new Active had no case. It fell directly on a corner, and of course missed the hardened rubber/plastic part and hit the outer metal shell directly. It knocked a snap out of the bottom right corner opposite the impact point. I took the case off and installed it again and everything snapped in normally.
My screen is fine and everything works normally. Aside from asthetics, nothing is different than before the drop. I have read about some regular S4 screens breaking from far less. Maybe there is something to the "rugged" nature of the active.
Anyways, a picture is worth a thousand words so here are four pics. My first time uploading pics here so hopefully they turn out ok.
Ouch! My sincerest condolences.
I would be terrified while picking it up..
Any 5 inch touchscreen device shouldn't ever be considered rugged haha

It's not a rugged phone ladies... It's the same as an s4 just water and dirt proof.
You drop it and it will break just as easy as a regular s4.
Ouch!
Ouch that sucks! Yeah I just got my Active today and I need to get a case and screen protector ASAP.
I didn't think this phone would be drop proof. It was advertised as waterproof/dustproof.
At least the screen is not cracked.
Ouch! At least a case will cover the damage and the screen is not cracked. One of the reasons I returned mine. It is a bit slippery. The ATT manager asked why I was returning it and I said no cases, no support and he scoffed at me. I then asked him when is the last time a Galaxy Device was launched and cases were not available on that day at the store? Even my captive had a case at ATT the day I bought it...It has been over a week and you can't even get an overpriced cases from ATT? No thanks.

I know it wasn't made with drop protection, but it did hold up pretty well. If a case ever comes out I will have no worries at all.
I dropped my s4 in a puddle 2 days ago fully submerged and my heart sunk. Ripped it sort let it dry. Used some alcohol to get water out and it works fine. Not an active though.

fortunately i dont have to worry about money, ever, but i still take very good care of whatever i have, and i have learned not to lend things out or let people use my stuff (especially drunk friends and cell phones or idiot friends and new sports cars).

Sounds like the case of "I haz monies." Paying full price 3 times sucks really really bad. I would hope you mean breaking the original, then breaking it at repair, and one more for good measure. Still, that's just crazy butterfingers, but I digress.
Op, I seriously doubt "rugged" means unchipable, or even blemish proof. If phone meets concrete from even three feet and the right angle, you'll either chip, dent, or scratch. In thing to be happy about is the glass or screen shattering. I'll take dents and chips over exploding screens any day. Still, not having cases for it is highly questionable. You'd think even Sammy would release a case, just to collect more money.

I cannot believe how ****ty the active is, this phone slipped out of my pocket and fell from about 10 inches up the day I bought it. The screen cracked in two places. Upper right corner and right below the back button.
However, I called at&t and they sent me a regular s4 free of charge and let me keep the mildly broken active. Never charged me or anything. If only I could find a replacement screen.

One of the reasons I got rid of my old S4 was because people were having the screen crack while in their pocket with no trauma. I haven't heard any such reports on the Active just yet. Honestly, the one time I cracked a screen it was on my Note 1 and it was a drop of similar height and I had a Trident case on it. It sucks, but I can't see blaming an electronic device when I'm the one dropping it.
I was climbing a 65 foot route today when my S4 Active slipped out of my pocket. Why I had it in there in the first place is a lesson I should never had to learn... Needless to say, it was there and it fell out from about 50 feet up. Remarkably, I watched as it bounced off the limestone shelf below me and bounce up about 8 feet in the air before sailing off down to the scree slope below. Upon initial impact, the back and battery came off and went in completely different directions. I was able to locate the back, but not the battery. Using my wife's battery (she has the same phone), I re-assembled and voila!! It started right up!! Everything seems to be working (so far)! Talk about a rugged phone!!
So... This leaves me without a battery. Where should I pick one up? AT&T store said they don't' stock them. The battery is a b600bu 2600 mAh.
Pics because it did happen. The last pic shows the approximate hight of the fall.

Okay, first of all - GOD DAMN !
Second I kinda got a question. I see a huge ding on the plastic, do you see an impact zone actual overlap glass ( did actual glass got hit on impact) or it's just hit plastic part. Cause I am just trying to understand what is going on here. I know people that dropped SGS4 regular from pocket height and unit was cracked, some with same regular model managed to do gf wall aggro and nothing. Now this. Just trying to understand Glass and LCD, how different it in both units. And in your case , just change back, file plastic a bit or get a overlapping case and it's like new.

From what I have read the regular S4 has a small bezel that flexes on impact which makes the screen an easy target. This bezel is not only thicker but it goes a little bit before the glass meaning the plastic will hit the ground instead of the glas. This gives it a little more protection.
That is crazy and does my heart good to see it survive
I found Hyperion brand batteries on amazon
When I was younger, my remote controlled cars always ran longer on them. And they're water proof guaranteed.
2 for 20 + a separate charger just for the spare.
Plus their tech shop has a phone so you talk with engineers, which is pleasant.

Thats amazing on your drop....Hopefully that fall isn't a fluke, and these phones are a bit tougher than the average user is used to.
I got the Anker batteries for the GS4, but the batteries are slightly thicker...they will definitely work in the GS4 active, but i question if it will keep the waterproof seal intact. I plan on using the charger, with more oem samsung batteries.

you can buy them here... I've not yet ordered these though, so I cant personally vouch for them.

Do they make slightly thinner batteries? So it will make wireless charging less risky.

Yup, totally lucky. An impact on the screen would've surely destroyed it. As it is, there is a large dent in the back cover. I'll probably have to replace it. But, the story holds and I'm still impressed it survived the fall at all.
I picked up a battery from Batteries+. It does seem just a tiny bit bigger. I'll probably order the Samsung just to be safe.

One hell of a steal! I've heard bad things about those tho. Like there is a gap between the two pieces meaning it could more easily come apart if dropped thus allowing water or anything to intrude the case coming into contact with the device. Other than that it would have been my second choice but that was a deal breaker for me.

tried it for the 1st time yesterday for the Spartan Beast in temecula! yes there is a gap when u try to close it. but taking the back cover off ur phone fixes this. i was really iffy about using the case. as i never tested it. took the back case off. used the atlas case and it seals completely. used it the whole race through mud water and the swamp. stayed dry the whole time. quite happy with it. + it has a small part on the case u can put a lanyard!
about people mentioning the sound being drowned or anything because of the case seal. watching my videos it doesnt seem that much. my voice is clear and so are the people around me. havnt tried it for voicecall yet.

Wth, yeah i guess i wouldn't be either xD Great job man! I'm always looking for cheap cases, had to pay the full price for my LifeProof for the Galaxy S5 cause eBay and other places had about the same price, plus that way i don't need to worry if i ever have a warranty claim.
Just a warning to everyone wanting to get this phone because it can "take the drops."
So I'm getting ready to watch the World series, sitting on my sofa and my V10 falls off the edge of the sofa on to the floor and guess what? The SCREEN CRACKED! Are you kidding me LG? You boast how this thing can take the drops and my phone falls TWO FEET and the screen cracks? Now I have to pay a deductible to get another phone? Yeah...let me get that phone, take it in and trade it for a different brand. Not sure if mine is defective or something but I've had bigger drops on other phones that had no issues. This is NOT what I expected from this phone - a phone I was hoping to keep and carry with no case. HORRIBLE experience! My G4 can take a bigger drop than that!
It's physics and coincidence. You were unlucky enough to have it a weak spot.
It happens.
Sadly, LG doesn't do the one free screen replacement like some other OEMs do.
Any phone can shatter with one unlucky 2 foot drop. LG is no different.
Sorry about the broken screen, though. That does suck.

Sorry for your loss.
I get that but they WILL be hearing from me since they tout in commercials how you can drop the phone and it can take it. Hopefully with the phone being so new they won't want the negativity out there about this phone and since I have the G4 and the V10, maybe they will be nice enough to take care of it. Who knows? Can't hurt to try. I'll update the thread once I talk to them.
Well, they only tested to drop the phone at 1-1.5 foot, anyway.

Actually, this is from LG's website:
1. The LG V10 passed a military standard test for shock (MIL-STD-810G Method 516.6, Procedure IV – "Transit Drop"") that consists of 4-foot drops onto 2" of plywood over concrete. The test includes impacts on every face, edge and corner of the device. Further, the device passed an enhanced version of the Transit Drop test consisting of 26 drops from 4 feet onto a concrete surface. "Passed" is defined as the absence of any of the following issues: surface cracks, inoperability of device including camera, and separation of screen from monitor. Device may not perform as tested in all conditions. Test performed in controlled environment. Do not attempt.
I get that "device may not perform as tested in all conditions" but for Pete's sake, this thing dropped 2 feet onto carpet.
Very sad.

CARPET? I'm sorry, but I don't believe that. There is no way your phone dropped 2 feet onto a soft, impact absorbing surface like carpet and broke. Carpet is probably the safest thing you could possibly drop the phone on!
Wow, that is certainly sad. Man I hope they will replace it

I swear to you. I even sarcastically said to my wife, "Oh no...my phone fell. I'm SOOOO Worried." Then I picked it up and it was cracked. I was completely shocked myself. I kept saying, "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?????!!!!" Had I dropped it getting out of my car or something onto concrete, I would understand. I'm still in shock.
By the way ---- it's berber carpet and there's currently no padding under it because we had a flood and are waiting for new flooring. Thin carpet on top of concrete. Still...CARPET.
I am sorry, i recently dropped my Nexus 6. Although it didn't hit carpet it did have a case. I was bummed non the less
Thats unfortunate. No two pieces of glass are the same though. I work on concrete all day and i cant tell you how many phones ive dropped on it and never cracked a screen, knock on wood. I'm like you, I don't plan on using a case with this phone. I may think twice about that now.
Still waiting to receive my device but you don't need a case to protect the screen... Get a tempered glass protector
Best $8 investment you can make on your $600 phone

I ordered it online last night from Amazon. They didn't have them in store when I bought it.

Yikes, I feel you.
Although it really is the physics of the matter, and drop tests are based on statistics, I feel you.
It goes completely against what you were lead to expect, and I agree, you need to let LG know, and everyone else who will listen.
I can't imagine the horror. Complain everywhere for what it's worth. 'Bad luck' would not appease me either in this situation.
I feel you.
Complain to LG maybe they will replace it

No other phone available to take photos right now (Wife sleeping with her iPhone plugged in and white noise on). But why would I make this up? I will post photos tomorrow night after work. Or maybe in the morning.
Definitely happened.

For the time being, thread has been closed per OP request.
Has anyone else noticed their screen is actually BOWING in the center? Lift it up to a bright light while looking at the surface from an extreme angle. It's only on the screen itself, the back of the device is flawless.
I'm just curious if any else is experiencing this before I make a fool of myself trying to explain it to the world's best customer service dept. when/where there may be a language barrier. ?
Hoping to get some kind of feedback from everyday users regarding the bow in the middle of the screen. If I can get another device to grab a image of the actual screen bowing I'll attach it as soon as I can
Thanks!
I laid a Starrett 6inch ruler across mine and it's perfectly flat.

None here. Do you have a tight=fitting case?

^Do this. I be amazed if a defect of that magnitude wasn't detected during assembly.
Hate to break it to you but Samsung tech support is some of the worst I've ever used... hope their QC is better.
Over zealous frustration of finger print scanning probably took its toll. ?

This was my first thought. I had to get my Note 8 replaced toward the end of last year because the battery was swollen. The screen was sticking out because of it. Mine happened because of stupid charging habits.

I'm curious - what were these charging habits?
Is the screen bowing inward or bulging outward?
Either way it indicates a defective or damaged phone...

What are "stupid charging habits"? The specs for the phone allow us to charge it however we want, as long as we use a compatible charger. If the battery bulges, that's a phone defect, not a user error.

its bowing inward...I can't grab a picture.until I get my wife' phone but she's always on it for work. After work she's on it with the kids or shopping! ?
Haven't done anything weird outside of just simply using it. I just realized as I'm typing this in landscape mode, my thumbs are exactly where the bow is. And thanks for telling me but I already knew Samsung's Customer Service and Tech Support are the worst! That is why I'm asking here first BEFORE I even contact them since I know what's in store once I call them.
I was thinking of just getting a glass screen protector and just leaving it be. I have a Pelican case for my phone but I've never actually bought a glass screen protector for any of my Note devices before. Which is actually the best screen protector to go with?
I appreciate everyone's thoughts on the subject and THANK YOU for your help!

Make Samsucks replace it.
If you can get a direct swap where it was bought that be best.
This is way too expensive of a phone to let a gross defect like this slide by, sorry it happenedto you
