Galaxy s2 Skyrocket was running 2.3.8 I believe. Tried to upgrade my firmware with Kies. Got an error message, yet when attempting a Emergency Recovery or Upgrade and Initialization it fails every time. I also cannot get the phone off of the "Firmware upgrade encountered and issue" scren ---This is even after I hold both volume buttons and hit the UP to CONTINUE--- I have tried the Odin3-v1.85 but it says that philz_touch_6.10.3-skyrocket.tar.md5 is invalid (Got that off of the top of the page of threads)
Any help at all is so appreciated.
Kies is a pos. Use Odin to flash the firmware you want. See the stickies in the development forum
Will they include a .mda (or whatever it is) that will work? And still the phone only goes into that one mode. Would taking the phone to an at&t store be a good idea?

I'm not sure what you mean by .mda. I'd recommend you go to sammobile.com and download the ucmc1 firmware then use this guide and Odin to flash it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26056924

For some strange reason, when I download thru 1-click, my phone just gets stuck at the att boot screen. i can then get into recovery only thru a jig as my 3 button combo does not work. I was thinking if I could get a csc file for rogers, i can install it thru odin alongwith the firmware.
I found a file. Even though kies reads the firmware as I896**** it adds ATT in the end. But all the other info is of the rogers

hey gang. have a samsung galaxy s2 i727 (at&t).
tried using the odin 1-click to install ics, but something happened, everything froze, and now i get the dreaded "firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
kies won't read the phone, and i'm not sure how i can get into download mode to try and flash the original rom with Odin as some other threads are directing me to do. any advice would be greatly appreciated.
thanks!
Have you tried rebooting the phone with the charger attached?? That always puts me in download mode

i was able to get back to stock using odin 1.3. i'd much rather be on ics, but the 1-click odin isn't working for me.
i'll have to look around to see if i can get a tar of the rom.
thanks!
I went through the same thing. I just flashed the rom as soon as Odin recognize the phone and done deal

When the phone boots to "firmware encountered an issue message" you still in dl mode try the ics one click again or just push a custom recovery and flash a rom
Edit: if possible be sure to ALWAYS check md5 to ensure proper download. That goes for anything you flash to your phone

Yup - figured out the DL mode thing. Just had a bit of a panic at first as the screen is pretty foreboding and it was my girlfriend's phone.
I went from, "Give me your phone, dear. I'm going to upgrade it and be your hero" to "Stop yelling. I didn't break your phone. Just give me a minute to figure out how to fix it."
My problem with the ICS one-click is that the program said it was done, but the phone just hung on the "downloading ROM screen" for 20 minutes. Now that I know how to fix the soft-brick, I want to try it again. The lady, however, doesn't seem too eager to hand over the phone. =]
Wait until she goes to sleep. Shell wake up to a surprise.

Ok so I've been rooted and unlocked for a while now, but stayed with the stock rom as when I tried out Synergy Nightlies it gave me some errors. So I went to try out CleanRom 2.1, people liked it and I didn't notice any flashing errors. So I flashed it through CWM 6.0.1 and it gave me the yellow exclamation mark saying I had unauthorized data on my phone. So I followed the sticky on how to unbrick my phone using the 2 boot loaders and the root66 stock image. My issue is that when running the root66 stock image through Odin it fails at _XmitData_Read, which seems to be somewhere in system.img.ext4. I've tried rebooting the computer, the phone, Odin, it just doesn't work. So when I reboot my phone after the failure I get Odin auto loading saying:
Odin Mode
Product Name: SCH-I535
Custom Binary Download: No
Current Binary: Samsung Official
System Status: Official
Qualcomm Secureboot: Enable
Then an image of a phone, 2 dots, a yellow exclamation, 2 dots and a computer are shown with the message "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again.
Anyone able to help me?
can you still get to odin mode? also if you have kies installed on the computer erase it.

Kies isn't installed on the computer and yes I am still able to get into Odin Mode.
I'm under the impression that "unauthorized software" message comes from the locked bootloader (if I'm wrong about that someone plese correct me.)
Sounds like you're functional enough to be able to Odin back to stock and go from there - that's what I'd try. See the stickied thread in the Q&A forum.
I would run the FULL VRALF stock image through ODIN to return to stock. That is always the safest way out of a sticky situation.
Thanks guys, according to another post the version of EZ-Unlock I used most likely gave a false report and never actually unlocked my phone. The problem with going back to stock, which if what I'm trying to do, is that it fails.
Could be an USB issue - an intermittent connection would be most likely to cause problems while sending the system partition since that's the biggest. I've had problems using adb from time to time if I plug into one of the front-panel ports on my PC but no trouble with one on the back.
Maybe try switching ports or try a different cable ...
Actually what usb plug are you using on your computer? You should be using one in the back of your computer by the power supply. Seen the front jacks not work correctly for large transfers. Finally, try another usb cable.

Strange.... i was able to flash syergy on thefirst try. Never used odin during the whole process....
If youre rooted you need to make sure you have a custom recovery in place like cwm or twrp. Make sure you make a nand-backup.
I used casual to flash unsecure bootloader, with that and recovery in place you should be able to flash roms without any hitches....
I could never find a comprehensive guide on using odin so i never got around to testing it

So far I've tried 3 different USB cables and both a desktop, both front and back ports and a laptop, each one fails on the write of XmitData under system.img.ext4
I had a custom recovery installed and Odin is only being used to get me back to a stock rom, otherwise I did all my flashing under CWM 6.0.1 or twrp. I think the whole fake unlocked bootloader just hard bricked the software.
EDIT: Come to think of it I remember waking up to my phone in download mode. I think Verizon tried to install the update to my phone while I was sleeping. Granted it failed at the end, but I'm wondering if that did something to brick me now.
If you can get in download mode it can be saved. I woud re download the stock firmware or the 66, but personally i would go bone stock. You may just have a bad download.

Yea, I'm currently downloading at the speed of slug the newest update from the forums, will probably just redownload at home, since it's going to take over an hour >.<
EDIT:
Does anyone have a link for an older EZ-Unlocker, that is known to work, so that I don't get this problem yet again.
FIXED!
Ok, so using the newest stock rom from the dev forum worked. Can someone please give me a link to an old EZ-Unlocker so I can flash without worrying about another massive brick in my palm. I'm guessing that running the original root66 stock rom through dropbox somehow corrupted it.

I personally suggest not using the app if you already had trouble. Just root your phone using the Debug Root method in Development, download the aboot.img from Adam Outlers thread HERE to your phone, and run the commands at the very bottom in Terminal Emulater app (from the market).
That way you know for sure your bootloader is unlocked. This is what I have done and never had an issue.
Edit: Glad you got your issue resolved!
So I had downloaded Kies and it was ready to upgrade my blaze to ICS, but I read that the phone should be unrooted first. So I did this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1591601
Apparently that was a mistake. Now I get the following error in Kies:
"Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies" "Current firmware version: PDA:LB7 / PHONE:LF4 / CSC:LB7 (TMB)"
Should I have just upgraded without unrooting? Why is it telling me this? I thought this was the stock ROM? If I keep flashing me Blaze with different ROMs without completely reformatting, will that slow it down?
You gotta go back to the OG rom before the first update.... If u look there is a thread about it on here somewhere

that's a kies issue. lets face it, it sucks. but that's the only tar I've been able to find that puts it back to Samsung Official and allows you to upgrade via kies. If you dont trust the links I have, you can find the tar at sammobile.com but you'll have to register to download

I never understood why people choose to use Kies... I personally hate it. It is much faster and easier to do it the XDA way and root/CWM and then flash whatever rom you want. If you want I'll post the quicker way to do this. No one has hard bricked from this method and its quite simple.
Root your device (you already have I see)
Install CWM HERE. (make sure not to check re-partition)
Boot into CWM by holding Volume UP and Volume DOWN and pressing POWER. USB must be unplugged. (could take up to 20 seconds to load CWM)
Flash your new ICS modem HERE in CWM
Now you can install any ROM you wish. You can install the stock ICS rom or a modified ROM. It is best to always have CWM just in case something messes up you have options to fix. If you install through Kies you have to install CWM over again anyways. This is faster. Now to install a ROM, there is a common process that will help out....
To install a ROM:
Boot into CWM
Perform a factory/reset
Wipe cache
Wipe Dalvik cache (under advanced)
Install zip (ROM)
Reboot and let your phone sit for at least 5 minutes, 10 is preferred.
Newbie Guide for Modding
You can read the above link for a small rundown on CWM and its available options. If you are here on XDA you probably should have CWM.
I had unrooted my device before installing CWM and didn't see the part that says to root it before hand. I installed it, seems to work fine. Will I have any problems.
Also, I just learned you're instructions are missing a step, I have flash the actual ICS ROM here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1918608
Before the radio mod you listed. Other than that, thanks!
P.S. What do you mean by "modem"?
i tried to root my samsung galaxy s blaze last night with odin....im stuck on a screen that says firmware upgrade encountered an issue..please select recovery mode in kies..its not that easy...i went through the process of rooting beforehand and it was totally stuck on the screen where it has the little bar that fills up...right after the flying andriod screen...lol...im so lost...can anyone help me out...thanks yo..
Hmm.. if it says that on Odin you're probably on force download mode. So I'd suggest you flash a stock firmware from Sammobile.com. (you'll just flash the PDA file which is in the tar) then you should try rooting again. I'd suggest you follow Erikmms' guide on the dev thread.
(P.S I know you pm'd me sorry for the delay. If you've anymore questions pleases feel free to pm me.

When installing firmare, rooted kernel and cwm.....dont do it in one visit to odin. Also make sure you dont have autoreboot checked or repartition when flashing the rooted kernel or cwm. :good:

Just for my own curiosities sake, why not auto-reboot?
I'd recommend auto reboot. Then you don't have to go through the hassle of manual reboot from Odin.
