Bricked....Ugh - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Ok so I've been rooted and unlocked for a while now, but stayed with the stock rom as when I tried out Synergy Nightlies it gave me some errors. So I went to try out CleanRom 2.1, people liked it and I didn't notice any flashing errors. So I flashed it through CWM 6.0.1 and it gave me the yellow exclamation mark saying I had unauthorized data on my phone. So I followed the sticky on how to unbrick my phone using the 2 boot loaders and the root66 stock image. My issue is that when running the root66 stock image through Odin it fails at _XmitData_Read, which seems to be somewhere in system.img.ext4. I've tried rebooting the computer, the phone, Odin, it just doesn't work. So when I reboot my phone after the failure I get Odin auto loading saying:
Odin Mode
Product Name: SCH-I535
Custom Binary Download: No
Current Binary: Samsung Official
System Status: Official
Qualcomm Secureboot: Enable
Then an image of a phone, 2 dots, a yellow exclamation, 2 dots and a computer are shown with the message "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again.
Anyone able to help me?

can you still get to odin mode? also if you have kies installed on the computer erase it.

Kies isn't installed on the computer and yes I am still able to get into Odin Mode.

I'm under the impression that "unauthorized software" message comes from the locked bootloader (if I'm wrong about that someone plese correct me.)
Sounds like you're functional enough to be able to Odin back to stock and go from there - that's what I'd try. See the stickied thread in the Q&A forum.

I would run the FULL VRALF stock image through ODIN to return to stock. That is always the safest way out of a sticky situation.

Thanks guys, according to another post the version of EZ-Unlock I used most likely gave a false report and never actually unlocked my phone. The problem with going back to stock, which if what I'm trying to do, is that it fails.

Could be an USB issue - an intermittent connection would be most likely to cause problems while sending the system partition since that's the biggest. I've had problems using adb from time to time if I plug into one of the front-panel ports on my PC but no trouble with one on the back.
Maybe try switching ports or try a different cable ...

Actually what usb plug are you using on your computer? You should be using one in the back of your computer by the power supply. Seen the front jacks not work correctly for large transfers. Finally, try another usb cable.

Strange.... i was able to flash syergy on thefirst try. Never used odin during the whole process....
If youre rooted you need to make sure you have a custom recovery in place like cwm or twrp. Make sure you make a nand-backup.
I used casual to flash unsecure bootloader, with that and recovery in place you should be able to flash roms without any hitches....
I could never find a comprehensive guide on using odin so i never got around to testing it

So far I've tried 3 different USB cables and both a desktop, both front and back ports and a laptop, each one fails on the write of XmitData under system.img.ext4
I had a custom recovery installed and Odin is only being used to get me back to a stock rom, otherwise I did all my flashing under CWM 6.0.1 or twrp. I think the whole fake unlocked bootloader just hard bricked the software.
EDIT: Come to think of it I remember waking up to my phone in download mode. I think Verizon tried to install the update to my phone while I was sleeping. Granted it failed at the end, but I'm wondering if that did something to brick me now.

If you can get in download mode it can be saved. I woud re download the stock firmware or the 66, but personally i would go bone stock. You may just have a bad download.

Yea, I'm currently downloading at the speed of slug the newest update from the forums, will probably just redownload at home, since it's going to take over an hour >.<
EDIT:
Does anyone have a link for an older EZ-Unlocker, that is known to work, so that I don't get this problem yet again.

FIXED!
Ok, so using the newest stock rom from the dev forum worked. Can someone please give me a link to an old EZ-Unlocker so I can flash without worrying about another massive brick in my palm. I'm guessing that running the original root66 stock rom through dropbox somehow corrupted it.

I personally suggest not using the app if you already had trouble. Just root your phone using the Debug Root method in Development, download the aboot.img from Adam Outlers thread HERE to your phone, and run the commands at the very bottom in Terminal Emulater app (from the market).
That way you know for sure your bootloader is unlocked. This is what I have done and never had an issue.
Edit: Glad you got your issue resolved!

There should be a link to a cwm.tar file (not the exact name) on this page. Flash it via odin and there you go.

Thats my problem I cant use my USB right now and I can only zip at the moment but barely can do that do to the Recovery messing up
Can't use USB right now...? I think you might be confusing transferring files to the USB card while the phone is booted, with flashing a TAR file via Odin.
Remember--when you're flashing via Odin, your battery is pulled, the phone is off, and then--while you do plug in your USB cable--it's only receiving power through that USB connection.
Use BDE's "How to customize.." guide here, and go directly to step 2. If you don't already have it, grab the "Red" Recovery from this thread (also linked to in BDE's guide); grab the TAR file listed there. Then go back to the guide and follow the instructions for Step 2.
That should get your recovery back to Red recovery, and I think from there I'd make sure everything else is working and the phone boots before doing anything else. Once it's up and running, then maybe give the kernel another shot.
EDIT: Thought of what else you might mean; if you're unable to get Odin to recognize when your phone is plugged in, hit up the Samsung website to get the Samsung USB drivers. Then, when you hold the volume down key as described in the guide, you should see one cell of Odin turn yellow, which tells you your phone has been recognized. Assuming you have a Windows PC, at least.

Yea I even put in another post about my USB issues and can't seem to find a solution. I may just purchase another phone. My girls works perfect and no connection problems but I may of damaged it or something but it only charges doesn't work other wise. ADB, USB file transfer, nothing.

So you're saying you can't even get the phone to work in Download mode? Will the phone actually boot up into Download mode?

When I figured it was my phone was when my girls phone worked with the same equipment. Also sometimes when I plug it up to the PC doing download mode it will say USB Not Recognized and I have the drivers installed I even tried to select the specific driver but didnt know which one to do out the that folder of many LOL
Have you tried opening ODIN in Download Mode anyway just to see if it'll recognize the phone?

While I was getting pretty wordy with my answer, Add's more or less on the same track as me: Even with the USB not working when the phone's booted normally, does Odin recognize it even so, or is Odin what you've been trying and not getting to work?

The different computers you tried wouldn't really matter unless each one had the Samsung USB driver installed. Also, does your girlfriend have the same model phone as you? If not, it's not necessarily a fair test.
It does sound like you've tried using Odin, and it just hasn't worked (based on the bolded part). So, try this:
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/SCH-I500RKAXAR
Go to the above link. Underneath where it says "Download Center for SCH-I500RKAXAR", look for "Manuals | Software". Software should be a blue link; click on that.
You should see a list of four items you can download. Look all the way to the right, under the "File" column; there should be four little icons. Click on the first of the four, and Agree to their user agreement. Save the file somewhere easy to remember, and run that file. I'd suggest doing this on any home computer you might connect your Showcase to.
Then, try putting the phone in Download mode and connecting to Odin once again.
Does it work after that?
I dont know how or why but I was able to get odin to work on a XP machine and I flashed the odin files for pick and pack and the odin files for cwm recovery all and was able to get both the recovery and 2.2 but I have more problems LOL. My internal memory is 0. I factory wiped and wiped cache via red recovery but to no avail. Still getting 0
If you can get into your phone and do stuff in Android, I'd run a Titanium Backup of your apps and stuff. If not, you may be SOL.
I'd start by just finding a stock ROM for 2.1 or 2.2.1 and Odin'ing that over to the phone. Start completely clean, no custom ROMs. Then load up CWM Red again.

I have been looking for 2.1 Stock Rom for CS but I have not been able to. I have my apps backed up but unfortunately I can't install them in this Rom yet but I will keep trying to get it.
Ouchie! I just had a look throughout the Mes Dev thread, and the one post I saw for EB11 for Showcase had the link removed. Couldn't find any other reference for an actual stock 2.1 or 2.2.1 specifically for the showcase; the guys *may* tell you the Mesmerize ones work for Showcase, but DO NOT use them until one of them says so. I would guess not, but don't know for sure.
I'd see about hitting the IRC channel and asking for a clean stock ROM from there, and/or maybe getting some "in-person" advice that way. ...or hope Phidelt82 or Elijahblake come across this thread to get it to you/help you out otherwise. XD
LOL IKR but I have already asked them for a Stock 2.1 Rom for CS and I was pointed to someone but they haven't responded to me so idk. And thanks for some of the info and I am happy I was able to get the files b4 he removed his comments. I had them already saved on the computer.

Some individuals were trying to put together a 2.1 stock image but weren't able to get one working, the one they have is stock 2.2 and that is the only pure stock ROM they have, but there is no reason to go back to 2.1 unless you planned on using it and staying with it, so a clean flash to 2.2 should fix any issues you may be experiencing.

Phone did not upgrade to ICS properly

First of all I apologize if this has been brought up before in other posts. I am in a mixture of frustration and panic right now because I tried upgrading to ICS on my Rogers SGS2 LTE, and it failed.
Using Kies, I followed the prompts, and for whatever reason it didn't finish. Now when I boot up the phone, it keeps telling me to use the recovery mode option in Kies. However, if I do try to use recovery mode, it always times out and tells me I may need to contact a Samsung service center. The computer has no problem communicating with the phone, AFAIK.
Basically, I'm here to ask what options I have. Currently, i'm trying to do this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342348 , but because the stock TAR is taking a long time to download, I'm asking if I have any other options. I would like to keep the data on my phone, but if I have to wipe it to return it to normal I'm willing to do that.
Please help.
Reboot and try again

I've tried rebooting the computer I was using, and I've also tried another computer with no luck. I *think* I was rooted. I remember doing something a long time ago involving odin. I never installed Cyanogenmod or any other 3rd party roms.
I had Superuser under my apps, if that helps.
I wish I could reply sooner but this board is making me wait 5 mins between posts. Sorry. It's like I'm in the emergency room with a gunshot wound and I'm waiting for the doctor to finish his smoke break, then his coffee break, then washroom break, jesus
by CWM, I think you're asking about Clockwordmod? If so, yes, I had that on my phone. Does this mean I can't use the steps in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342348 to fix my phone now? Or can I still proceed.
If you have superuser then most likely you are rooted and since you have clockworkmod especially then kies is not gonna update your phone. Your on Rodgers so you need to find the stock firmware and flash it. I'm on att or I could link you to one that would work. I got my stock firmware from Samsung website. Try going to sammobile and see if you can find the stock firmware for your phone. I'm sure since its Samsung they should have Rodgers firmware to. Download the stock firmware and flash it in Odin onto to your phone and then kies should work. If you can't find the stock firmware at sammobile then look for the stock firmware here on xda I'm sure someone on Rodgers has it....
Edit. The link up there to Odin back to stock should work. Just download the file and follow the steps in order and don't leave one out. There are no shortcuts when it comes to flashing a phone or it could be rendered useless for anything more than a paperweight. Konane is real good and would not lead anyone wrong....

I would still like to get ICS on my phone. I noticed on Sammobile's site that there is a firmware for 4.04 that was released recently. Would I somehow be able to use that, combined with Odin, to get ICS on my phone? In other words, follow all the steps in the aforementioned thread, except, use this newer firmware file? Sorry I realize this may sound like a dumb noob question, but I want to make sure I do things right.

If you're back to stock and on Rogers, you should be able to update using Kies.
The thing is, when Odin fixed my phone, it didn't remove Superuser, so doesn't that mean my phone isn't stock anymore? I was expecting Odin to basically reset my phone back to factory settings, but it seems to have just reverted it back to before I tried updating to ICS with kies.

I haven't used the stock 3e that much always just flash cwm but I would suggest that you do a factory data reset to from the recovery if 3e gives that option I've never used it so I'm not sure. But if you are still on cwm recovery kies will not ever update your phone until you put everything back stock. You must have just flashed the kernel only. Flashing just the kernel does not wipe anything you need to flash the stock firmware from sammobile in Odin and that will do a full wipe and restore everything to stock

Can't get Vibrant to enter Recovery or Download mode after Odin Flash

Hey well, to start things off I was trying to unlock my T-Mobile SGS4G to work with AT&T but it turns out it needs to be rooted first. I have rooted before and this is the first time I have ran into a problem.
What I did first:
I used Heimdall in an attempt to flash CWM Recovery so I can gain root access. For some reason the zImage was bad (?) and my phone could only get to the T-Mobile logo and then freeze.
Recovery and Download DID work
What I did second:
I used odin3 to flash back a stock T-Mobile rom in hope to fix things... and it did everything succesfully but now it's stuck in a real boot loop.
Can't get into Recovery, nor Download. It's really depressing to keep seeing that battery show over and over again.
Any ideas on how to get my computer to detect my phone again?
Thanks.
Edit:
I did every button combination + usb plug combination known to man. I uninstalled and installed the files again.
Did my phone brick because I ticked the partition tab on odin?
PLEASE help.
Our phone IS NOT the Vibrant. Hopefully someone can help you, but... I don't know. If you flashed OUR stock rom, with bootloaders... you're screwed. But, the fact you have images on your screen, should give you some hope.
Yea, I saw that, but the title says he has a vibrant. I don't know....
Head to the vibrant forum there are some un-brick tools over there...you need to get it in download mode use odin to flash stock froyo vibrant rom.. Should get it back up and running

Just to verify, pull out your battery and check if you have the SGH-T959V
One of the "download jigs" may help once you are certain which phone you have and what firmware and ROM you need to flash. You can make your own with a resistor and a microUSB plug, I bought one for $8.00, delivered, (I now see they have them on Amazon for $4, Super Saver eligible) and others have had good luck with even cheaper ones on eBay.
Also: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9403915
Jigs are cheap and unless you got the right resistor lying around buy a ready made one. Also if the phone shows up in odin you can download something whatever picture shows up on the screen. Raver has a thread about using heimdall to fix the boot files but its about six months old. Worked for me once. It might even be indexed in the bible under development.

I need help asap

So im in a huge dilemma right now. My phone cant even connect to ANY computer with a USB regardless of what cord I use. Each computer says "USB Device is not Recognized" i've done multiple wipes and reflashes and it didnt help. So then I installed mobile odin and flashed a completely stock TW image through the app (since I cant acces ODIN on PC) and that didnt help either. So now that i've done that, I cant even root, unlock, or do anything with the device because the USB connection with the computer WILL NOT WORK. I called vzw tech support and they had no idea to fix it so they are sending me a replacement right now. Little did I know that my flash counter is at #2 and i cant even reset because I cant root my device anymore. Does anyone have any idea what I could possibly do at this point? Should i send in this phone and hope vzw doesnt look at the flash counter and refuse to let me keep replacement?
Could you Odin flash a rooted stock image from mrRobinson's thread in the dev section? Then run Triangle Away to reset your flash counter.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers on your computer, also, have you tried a different cord?
Well with mobile odin I don't think your computer will ever recognize the device that must first be completely removed. Them make sure the device is selected as MTP

So since I am not able to access odin through my computer because my S3's charge port is malfunctioned, I had to use Mobile Odin and I downloaded the no wipe factory image but I forget to have "EverRoot" checked to keep root. So now I dont have root, and I cant access odin to reroot my phone therefore its basically a brick.

Yes, I have tried multiple cords and uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them. My computer just doesnt recognize the device at all. I used my other family member's S3 and works just fine. So you know its a hardware problem.

Well with mobile odin I don't think your computer will ever recognize the device that must first be completely removed. Them make sure the device is selected as MTP

When I plug in the device to the computer it gives no option in the pulldown for mtp or ptp.
try a usbjig
you can reset the counter with a usbjig maybe that's causeing the problem i think yoru only able to flash the phone so many tims without resetting that counter
Hi, try this
/efs/FactoryApp/batt_cable_count
Open by text editor reset to 1 , don't reset to zero

assuming you have already tried everything pc-side, including all usb ports, i'd start to think the usb port on your phone is likely to be broken, did you notice any damage to the pins?

Yes that is the case. Which is why I am getting a replacement device which is on its way. But what Im trying to figure out is how I can reset my flash counter without root since I can root my device without a working USB plug to my pc
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 4
i'm afraid there's no way to root a device other than odin or a superboot, and both require a pc
i guess you didn't have a custom recovery any longer after reverting to stock, did you?

What do you mean by that? I had twrp before I flashed the no wipe stock image through mobile Odin. then I did a factory reset. One other thing it does a show an unlocked symbol on the Samsung boot logo. How do I get rid of that
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 4
i have no idea what the unlocked symbol means as my first and only android phone is an acer
what i meant is that flashing stock ROMs usually ends up with the custom recovery being overwritten with the stock one upon booting the ROM
if you still had twrp installed after flashing, you could have used that to root by installing an update zip with su binary and superuser app inside
EDIT: i made one when i lost root by setting wrong permissions to the su binary, i can tune it to work with a sgs3 and attach it here, just in case it comes out useful

Yeah I was thinking about doing that but the recovery was overwritten with a stock one...So i guess all my options are out. I wish framaroot worked with my S3.

Need Help Debricking Soft Brick (Advanced User, I've tried everything)

Looks like I've soft-bricked my S3 and cannot get it back working at all.
When you power it on, it shows the yellow triangle and "Firmware Upgrade encountered an issue. Please use software repair assistant and try again."
I can get into download mode but nothing flashes through. I've tried ML1, MF1, the VRALEC bootchain method, including the PIT file, everything. Odin just won't complete any of the flashes. On some it hangs on Initializing (and I've tried all USB ports, different cables, and two laptops), on others it hangs on nand write partition. I even tried the trick where I add the PIT file but unselect Re-Partition. Nada. Oh, and I tried the actual verizon repair assistand and at 83% it says "phone was disconnected, please reconnect and try again."
Here's what the download mode screen looks like if that helps anyone http://i.imgur.com/zpNGAy4.jpg
Help please? I would really appreciate it.
What did you exactly do that brought you to this state?

Are you brick with 4.3?
I'm having the same problem (stock rooted 4.3). I flashed clockworkmod via ROM manager and when I went to boot into recovery... yellow triangle of death. I too have tried Odin back to stock, but everything fails. Trying Odin from the triangle screen right now. Seems to be hanging on "SetupConnection".
Update: Failed.

If you took the 4.3 OTA you will be unable to flash a custom recovery. This very helpful thread created by @BadUsername will get you back up and running:

I think so? I tried going back to stock from being rooted and on CM and I'm actually not positive if I'm on 4.3 now or not since the flash never succeeded. I may have had the wrong bootloader when trying to flash 4.3.
Any ideas?

Great question. I was rooted and on CM 10.2 when the phone started shutting down randomly. Reinstalled everything CM-related and it was still happening. I then used TriangleAway to reset root counter which worked flawlessly. Tried putting on a stock rom (the latest off of sammobile I believe 4.3), when the flash failed and then I got where I am now. Maybe I had the wrong bootloader for 4.3? Throughout my research I kept leaning towards this being the case similar to many that flashed OTA 4.3 and got a brick, but all the solutions for that haven't worked for me

You can tell which bootloader you are on from download mode. Use this thread it has all the info you need including how to fix it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2639337
Unless you've tried all those methods already? I think specifically this is the method you should try:

Thanks, at least I've confirmed I'm on the 4.3 baseband. However, I tried the guide on there and the guide you provided and am still unable to get past the "Initialzation" step in Odin. Any ideas?

You're using Odin right?
Try to flash it with the pit file. If that doesn't work then try to use the Verizon utility. That thread should work if you follow those directions perfectly, at least I haven't heard of it not working yet.

Hmm. Well at this point I would suggest you make sure you're using a quality USB cable and make sure you use the USB port right on the motherboard. But it looks like you already tried all that. What version of ODIN are you using?

Hey thanks for chiming in, really appreciated your guide. I followed everything to the T and had no luck. Tried both Odin 3.07 (PDA) and 3.09 (AP) and your method kept getting stuck at Initialzation in Odin. I tried the PIT file on both too, same thing. Tried the Verizon Utility and at 83% it says "phone is disconnected, lease reconnect and try again."
I will say this: when it gets stuck on Initialzation and I unplug the phone, Odin says "PIT file not found." Not sure if that means anything since the phone is unplugged but only other info I can think to share.
Got any other ideas? Would hate to be the first one that couldn't be helped by your directions. Thanks anyways!

I have tried, been using two official Samsung USB cables that came with the phone and my Nexus 10. I'm working on two laptops and tried all of the different ports getting the same result, Odin hangs on Initialzation.
I tried using both Odin 3.07 (PDA) and 3.09 (AP).
Any other ideas? Thanks!

I didn't write the softbrick guide, @ThePagel deserves that credit. I just made a sticky thread to have everything in one place.
I think you followed everything perfectly and did all that you could, you've read around a lot and tried everything you found. My guess is somehow your system partition is in a read only state and simply isn't letting anything write to it. That would explain what is happening.
What I would do is treat this as a hard brick. I would do one of 3 things:
1) try to hardbrick the phone yourself, maybe run the old version of casual and flash the insecure aboot file to unlock the phone, this obviously will corrupt the 4.3 bootloader and hardbrick the phone. Then you could use the hardbrick restore guide to fix it that way.
2) or you could send it in "as is" for jtag that will write the bootchain for you and most likely fix the problem.
3) try to use the methods in this thread but use all the 4.3 files. If you could somehow get this to work you should write a guide for it and I'll post it in the sticky. I think you have enough know how to attempt it.

I tried the method you posted under 3) and Odin is still stuck on Initialzation
As for hard bricking it myself, it does look like that's my only choice now since booting into download mode does nothing for me since I can't flash anything. When you talk about the insecure aboot file from casual, can you please be more specific? I looked at the casual thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2332825) and in the jar file I downloaded, there's a Scripts folder, under which there's a d2vzw toolkit zip file, in which there's a aboot.mbn file. Is this what you were referring to?
If I can avoid JTAG I would prefer that. Guess my next goal is to hard brick then try the write to SD Card and boot method.

Just make sure you have all the equipment for a hard brick restore first.
There's an old version of casual, not the most recent one, it's on the thread. It has an option to unlock the device. I'm not sure it will work in this circumstance, but if you can get it to recognize your phone you should be able to select that option only.

Casual won't recognize the phone
I tried flashing a GSM radio and it hung on initialzation again. Am I somehow stuck between a soft and hard brick now?

Man you have a tough situation.
I'd just get it a jtag repair. It'll start you clean and you can start over. I can't think of anyway to force download mode to write something to your phone.
That other guide is your exact symptom, but we don't have a way to fix a read only state on a 4.3 system.
