Using the PRO 12.2 on the plane and in the bus - Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anybody tried to use the PRO 12.2 on the plane or on the bus? I did not have the device but I put an A4 size magazine on the small table when I took the plane. Even with the person at the front tilted the chair backward, I could still type on the imaginary NOTE PRO 12.2. Anybody tried to type or view documents/movies on a small desk in the plane? How about typing and viewing on the bus or while standing at the bus stop?
User experience appreciated. Thanks.

Used on the subway. Its a little unwieldy, but isnt bad considering how it would be to use a laptop(I would never)

I just flew from California to Florida by way it two layovers. Total air time was around 8 hours I think. (We were flying standby).
The notepro definitely felt a little more unwieldy than my old 10 in tablets, and the guy next to me with a kindle paperwhite (paperweight, amirite?) Commented on how big it was....
Comparing to my gf working on her 15" laptop though it was not a problem. I did find it was just fine resting on the tray table, but I am on the hunt for a good folding cover.
Oh, and when I started reading comixology, Mr. Paperwhite was taken back by the image...

Lol. I think it depends on how you hold it. I layed the one at bestbuy across my arm like you would cradle a baby and use the other hand to navigate the ui, spen etc. It felt waaaay better to me than any 10 inch tablet. I felt more comfortable holding and using it and less likely to drop it.

I think a larger surface area may help for stability. The device is not available in my area yet. Can't try it.

Hello, how does the real PRO 12.2 fits the small desk on the plane? Can you use it comfortably? What is the person sitting at the front is tilting the seat fully backward?

I had plenty to spare when we landed to last me until we got settled down in our hotel room, but I also napped on and off. I still use it from about 5am to 10pm each day on and off, and I rarely see it go below 60%. I think the longest I ran it without charging was 4 days of intermittent use, and it only got down to about 30. The battery seems huge on this thing.

We can't charge and use kickstand at the same time.

So much for being able to watch things for extended periods of time. Why did they have to put the charger on the side with the kick stand out? Is this just to get us to buy the dock? And this is it for the threads I will start, I just thought that this was a horrible idea.
mods can you nuke this, there is already a discussion in another thread.
Maybe it's just my phone, but I can set the kickstand out the use the phone with the charger up.

Mine doesn't stay up like that. If I as much as blow on the phone when it's sitting like that, the kickstand folds up.
The charging port on the side is kind of silly. It's really annoying when typing on the phone while it's plugged in. When holding it in portrait mode, at least.
My kickstand isn't quite strong enough to support the weight of the phone in that position, especially with the power cord in... I guess if I drape the cord over something it kind of holds it up.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Hummmm. I may have to try that when I get back.
I saw the same issue regarding where the charge port was placed. My kick stand isn't strong enough either lol. Maybe we can wedge something there to keep it up.
I'm surprised yours isn't strong enough. Mine seems to be working pretty well. It collapsed the first time, but it does work. I just wish they would have thought this one through before placing the micro USB there. Or flipped the kickstand. My buddy has an evo and he uses his kickstand a bunch. IMO, one of the most innovative designs to come out of the mobile phone industry.

Put the kickstand out and and seat the phone STANDING UP like u would hold it in your hand to make a call, the cord will be on the bottom left side of the phone and it stands up that's what i've been doing. Hope that helps !
Yeah, but doing that makes it hard to watch in fullscreen. I would rather not do that unless I had no other choice. I think the upside down idea will work pretty well. It worked good a minute ago.
my kickstand doesn't support the phone the opposite way...it folds up before i fully let go of the phone.
Yeah that's weird because by kickstand holds my phone in portrait while charging just fine. The charging cable actually helps give it even more sturdiness because the cable kinda lays on the table acting like a brace to keep it from falling over that way.
Pretty strange design decision indeed. I encountered this at work today, trying to use the kickstand with the charger and I was like, umm, noope.
*shrug*
I bet they did it on purpose to coerce you to buy the desk dock. Lmao. And yes its annoying.

this design is so dumb
would something like a right angle mini usb plug work? I can't post links, but a quick google turned up a bunch of GPS power adapters...

You do realize that the phone can stand vertically as well as horizontally, correct. The placement of the charger was by design.

I think you missed the point, the poster clearly was referencing wanting to watch media and such in landscape taking advantage of the full screen. This wouldn't work up-right, it has to be on its side.

Yeah, that worked for me yesterday, but it's not particularly stable (like for using as a nightstand clock)...bump the desk/table and it falls over.

Exactly, I'm surprised so many responses didn't pick up on that. Can't watch a movie properly in the current configuration unless you add some sort of block to the left side of the phone (while on landscape mode).
I'm not sure if this is the stupidest power plug location I've seen on a phone, but it's definitely in the top 3 (the Galaxy S phones with the plug on top are pretty stupid too, but at least they don't interfere with a kickstand designed to watch movies with).

Hey jlevy73...another Nexus S user switching away already? The Nexs S is such a sweet device, especially with CM7 on it, but it may still end up being the 2nd shortest lived phone in my ever increasing collection (the iPhone 4 getting all of a 2 week's usage before going into the backup phone pile).
The 4G/LTE of the TB along with the much better voice quality and coverage of VZW (compared to TMobile) were too tempting not to test drive the phone. I'm not sure it's a keeper for me, I'm much too much addicted to the SAMOLED displays, even though the TB has a very nice TFT one, it's not as satisfying. I'll probably keep both, and cancel my AT&T accounts. I only need 2 active phones, not 4, LOL.

Heat making phone "Special"

i have been a iphone fan since they have first came out... i recently switch from my I4 to the infuse... and i couldnt be happier... Except one thing... the heat... When i am out at the pool with my kid and i am listening to music thru "iHeartRadio" it will switch between my radio app and my music library... and play both at the same time... And i notice the phone gets RIDICULOUSLY hot and slows way down on performance...
Has anyone else noticed these issues? Will rooting and putting the infused 1.5 on help with this? I have jailbroke and unlocked many iphones so i dont see this being a hassle to do...
TIA
yes i have the same problem. Is your phone flashed/rooted? have u did over clocking the cpu? if you did and you have it really high u may want to turn ur cpu down. In my situation my phone was flashed and rooted i had my phone overclocked to 1600 on performance all the time. which burned my vibration cable. You might wanna clear your memory and close running programs this will help your phone a little from overheating.
I've noticed this and I'm still stocked. Of course it happened in the sun, on a 105 degree day, and in a Ballistic HC case. Basically, I was torturing the phone. I wa clued in when the phone vibrated and displayed "reducing screen brightness due to overheat". Turned off the web, took the case off, and 5 mins later all was well.

If you leave your phone in direct sunlight in July, you deserve to have it blow up in front of you.
I'd never leave any electronics in direct sunlight if I can help it.

Not all of us can be basement dwellers.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA Premium App
Now now, it has nothing to do with being a basement dweller.
Example:
If you're out by the pool and want your phone near you, wrap it in a towel.
If you're out rebuilding the back deck and want your phone accessible, put it in a safe drawer of your toolbox or in a case on your belt.
Direct sunlight is the enemy when paired with heat and humidity; not 105 degree heat alone.
I'm not telling anyone the only way to protect your phone is to board up your mom's basement and never come out. Use discretion.
my infuse (with or without infused 1.5) runs hot when playing games within 10 minutes. that's what i have observed
To clarify, it was in the sun for less than 5 minutes, I was standing in line. And no, I am not going to carry an umbrella just to protect my phone. My point was more to the effect of "my phone is actually trying to protect itself", versus "damn overheating iPhone".

Surface Pro - Yellow burn mark on screen

Just curious if anyone else has noticed this... My device is almost exactly 1 week old. (I've been using it quite a bit for work)
Yesterday, I was playing a movie (using the DisplayPort) to my TV. The unit ran, plugged in, running Netflix for a total of 2 hours... Movie played fine, finished up, disconnected, etc...
Later on that day, I was using the Surface and noticed a yellow burn mark. It's a line along the right edge of the display on the surface. It's most prominent in two places, a blotch 2 inches down from the top, and worse towards the bottom about an inch up (all along the right side)...
Noticed that if I shut the device down, and let it sit on a granite counter-top at room temp (brings the temp of the device down to room temp), after turning it back on around 20 minutes later it's gone on a fresh boot. After starting it again, the yellow burn slowly comes back, coming back even faster if I'm doing CPU intensive stuff on it, or if it's being charged.
Anyways... Even though I purchased the device at the retail location and have a 15 day return window, I didn't want to bother as right now there's the shortage of 128 units, I don't want to have to wait for stores to stock up again, so I called Microsoft and found out that right now under warranty they are replacing faulty devices with brand new ones... So I started a warranty case, hopefully will receive my new unit in a few days.
I did some googling, and I read about people with iPads, and iPhones having a yellow tint due to the glue not curing on brand new devices. Users reported it would go away in time. I'm assuming this isn't the case for me as it's not there on start, but comes after the device warms up...
Also, after reading iFixIt's post about the internals, I noticed the batteries edge inside the device is right about where the yellow marks are. I'm thinking the battery inside the unit may be swelling, and putting internal pressure on the LCD panel... The Yellow get's worse when charging, but at the same time, maybe there's just pressure inside the device from the manufacturing process, you never know.
I just hope hope hope that the device MS sends out is brand new as they said it would be.
Here's a pic, it's very hard to see as its extremely difficult to snap a picture due to auto-focus, lighting, etc... The yellow is usually only visible on white, and certain greys in the gray scale, you can't see it at all on black.

I think it must be the glue not properly done. Best to return and get a new one imo

At first I thought it was the glue, but just the disappearing act it does, I'm thinking it's a LCD pressure mark instead... If I turn on power savings mode, and don't do anything it fades, barely hard to see... When it gets hot it comes back. I'm almost positive it's the battery putting pressure on the LCD...
As for the device, I'm absolutely loving it. I was lucky enough to get a 128 on the Monday after launch. I've been bringing it with me everywhere. I haven't really used the pen, but I use my Touch keyboard all the time.
This thing is SLICK! And actually to be honest, I waited for the Pro since I thought I wouldn't be able to use the RT. After getting this, and LOVING the metro interface, along with the Metro apps, the only time I go to the desktop is for Office on a normal day. Even then, I actually use the Mail metro app for exchange most of the time, unless I need to do something advanced in Outlook.
I realized everything I use it for, I could have gotten away with an RT instead. I have absolutely NO complaints And to be honest I'm going to pick up an RT as well...
I'll use the RT for day to day, notes, meetings, e-mail, music, metro apps, etc... The battery life will be awesome.
I'll use the Pro for special stuff, like very technical meetings, implementations (I'm an IT guy), real technical work (where I need apps like vSphere client, putty, etc...)
I'm dead serious, this device is slick! Totally worth the money!
I'm actually starting to wonder if this is condensation... No idea why it would glow yellow though... No bubbles or anything...
Noticed that the top of the surface that faces you clicks when tapping on the black border, wonder if it's missing a seal...
w00t,
Called up, they replaced my surface pro, got a replacement within 2 days, brand new
No yellow!

I have the same issue and will also be asking for replacement.
You seemed to have liked the service provided by Microsoft, since you got your replacement in 2 days, I'm assuming that they cross-shipped? Or did you have to send it in first? Or did you got a MS Store (none for me in Montreal...)

S PEN dead zone!

I haven't posted in a while but am rather frustrated with the quality control on the 10.1's I've encountered.
The first one I bought the screen was totally glitched out. Couldn't even initiate the start up screen.
I returned the lemon and got second one about 2 and a half months ago. It's been perfect....until tonight. I have never really used the S PEN until as of late but it's fantastic so I've obviously been using it more and more. I've noticed a 1 inch bar deadspot while using the S PEN. Place your Note landscape and it's about 3 inches from the left side and this 1 inch bar goes from the top of the screen to the bottom (when in Landscape). Over that region I described, the S PEN WILL NOT work. It works fine as a touch screen, just not with the S PEN. I've rebooted, turned it on and off, tried it on different applications, even took the case off in case the magnetized case was causing it, etc. I'm running a rooted stock 4.1.2 JB rom.
Luckily I purchased it from Costco and my 90 days is up the 2nd week of May.
This thing is definitely going back soon, but, how can I justify buying another one when I've gotten two defective ones??
I'm not sure what else is out there on the Android tablet front, but I think I'll be in the market soon.
Could just be a bad batch the store got. If there was a problem with their shipment then thats just bad luck for the consumer, besides, everyone knows that third times the charm....
And it really is worth trying again for, no other android tablet has the spen which is a really good little thing to have....
It's not inside a case containing magnets is it? Some of these can interfere with the digitiser
Beacause you are using it while charging.

After 3 days with the S7 Edge Silver (T-Mobile)

I'm coming from the Note 4. I kept it for the last few years as I loved the battery swapping ability (carried two almost credit card thin batteries in my pocket whenever I went out) and the memory slot. But it was getting long in the tooth.. The batteries were getting worn out and I was jealous of all the faster CPUs out in the market.
So when the S7 Edge came out, I jumped on it because the screen was almost the same size at the Note 4, I could use my memory card again, a better camera, a faster CPU. and the shiny shiny silver body.
While my Note 4 was rooted and running a ROM, I decided I wasn't going to do this with the S7. I wanted to be able to use Samsung Pay, and most of the things I had rooted for, seemed to be fixed by Android Marshmallow.
I could write a huge list of all the things I love about the phone. But you guys aren't here for that. Let's talk about the things that I am having issues with.
1.) Screen sensitivity on the edges. When I first got the phone, I was having problems using Samsung Keyboard and Google's Keyboard. The keyboard keys that were on the outside edge kept not clicking. After a bit, I realized that it was because my pinky was touching the other side of the phone. I had to be more careful on how I held the phone. But then I got a case for the phone and this issue was taken care of, as now my pinky gripped the plastic.
2.) Phone call image. This may seem silly, but i like to see a much bigger picture of the person that is calling me. Why did Samsung now make the picture sooo small now? On the left is my old Note 4. On the right is the S7:

3.) The camera settings. Why does the camera keep resetting after a while back to automatic? I want it to keep in Pro mode, so I can shoot RAW everytime. I was taking photos of the sunset today, and after it was done, only then realized it was not in Pro mode anymore so I didnt have the RAW images to play with.
4.) The camera settings 2. Why is the 12 megapixel only work at 4:3, but if you want to shoot at 16:9, you only get 9.1 megapixel? Who shoots 4:3 ever? All the photos I have taken, no longer fill my 1080p screens of my computer or TV. Hell, they don't even fill the screens of the phone itself. What is the point of shooting 4:3? Now I need to step back when taking photos, so I can crop them into 3:2 later.
5.) Games/movies not filling screen. So one thing I loved about the Note 4, was that almost all movies and games fill the screen 100%. Now, it seems like a lot of stuff is not filling the screen all the way. One example is Need for Speed: No Limit. The game almost seems cropped when playing.
6.) Slippery. This thing has no grip. I'm afraid constantly it will slide out of my hands. I got a case and now it's perfect. I have a good grip and have less finger prints everywhere.
7.) Battery life. So, as a lot of people have been discussing lately, their seems to be an issue with the Snapdragon 820 processor causing the Android System to eat up 30% of the battery. This does not happen on Samsung's own Exynos chip. So while my battery lasted 12 hours today and is only at 30%, I still wish it was more. Especially seeing that I can't replace it.. and in a few months, it won't be as good. I know a lot of you are saying that the phone needs a couple days to burn in, but it's been 4 days. And I'm worried about battery life bigtime.
Speaking about batteries, I really wish there was a smaller battery that could charge the phone just once at Quickcharge 2.0 speeds. The smallest I could find is the AUKEY Portable 6000mAh, but the thing is huge.. I may return this. I'd be happy with a 3500mAh one that is half the size so it can fit in my jeans pocket, like I carried my spare Note 4 batteries. But they don't make that.
The case I got was the "Galaxy S7 Edge Case, SpigenĀ® [Liquid Crystal] Ultra-Thin [Crystal Clear] Premium Semi-transparent / Exact Fit / NO Bulkiness Soft Case for Samsung Galaxy S7" (seriously... that's the long ass name that is on Amazon). It is very thin, but provides an amazing grip, kills the finger print problem, and I think can save this phone from 3-4 feet falls. The only thing I don't like is the raised lip it has on the bottom. It extends too far out from the bottom of the phone. Either I will take a razor blade to it, or look for another case, as I can see it get very annoying for me.
Ok.. That's it. Hope this helps some people. If you have any ways to fix the stuff I am having issues with above, please let me know. I'll leave you with the pic I took of today's sunset. Unedited, unfiltered, in unglorious 4:3 ratio.
With a 16:9 picture you lose quality toward the edges so the 4:3 retians the same quality and is already cropped. Think of the difference similar to a full frame DSLR and a crop sensor (APS-C) that cannon uses on their Rebel line. I personally enjoy the 4:3 ratio for pictures, but everyone is different. When you change to 16:9 all its doing is crop the 4:3 picture to thst ratio. Also the dialer picture screenshots are not consistent. The Note 4 is showing a contact and the S7E is dialing someone (in call UI) so please fix that so the comparison will be accurate.

Yes, I figured out that reason why it lost megapixel when going to 16:9, is because it was cropping the image. I shoot full frame with my Sony a7RII. I've never shot with a crop sensor. LOL. It's just annoying that I can't fill the screen with my shots.
As for the call screen from my Note, I would have to reactive my old SIM to get my Note 4 active, which would be a pain in the butt. So I just Googled an example:

That works, it was just hard to compare two different things. I haven't owned a Samsung phone since my Note 3 which was a long time ago. I'm sure you end up cropping those photos a lot, but full frame sensors give you more 'picture' to choose from. Samsung probably use the 4:3 ratio based on what Sony offered for the sensor features they wanted. I haven't taken enough photos in Pro mode to notice whether or not it defaults back to auto a while, but I'll look out for that. I took a bunch of pictures with the S7E and compared then to my 6P for fun. The S7E does better in certain situations it just depends on what you're doing with it. I still have mixed feelings about the phone especially the battery life (dismal right now).

Hello and thanks for your impressions
maybe with the next FW update, samsung will solve camera settings :-/ a bad bug for this cool device.
Can you explain better about first point? 1.) Screen sensitivity on the edge
without case is not handy write with keyboard? I never had a border smartphone and I'd like be sure to buy this.
The time spent with note4 about writing with keyboard (like email, etc) can be the same using this device or the border are a problem?
thanks!

I've noticed the same issue even with a case. Sometimes whole I'm typing with 1 hand the keyboard will think I'm hitting letters that I'm not. It then starts to massively lag in my case forcing me to reboot the phone because nothing will make it stop once it's started even when typing with the phone flat on a table. It's a software bug that should be easily fixed.

What do you mean? I rarely if ever put my phone flat on a table to Type anything unless I'm using side sync via my laptop.

Is harder to type on compared to a flat screen, and has a strong learning curve (no pun intended)

I believe since your note 4 is rooted, you have done some editing. If I'm not mistaken, you are using the full screen caller mod. Unless they changed it from the note 3 and s5, which uses a small picture, to a full size picture on the note 4, I'm sure it's a mod you've installed.

The speaker is maybe 2x the volume of the Note 4. It's VERY loud.

No.. I am impressed. The stuff I listed is just the annoying things that I would love fixed. The camera seems to take great pics. Fast to load up. Fast to take the pic. RAW option is awesome. Autofocus is fast. Front facing "wide" camera option is awesome. It's just annoying that it shoots in 4:3. All monitors, laptops, TVs (of the last decade), tablets, phones, etc are all wide (like 16:9). Nothing is 4:3 anymore. So now every picture I take, doesn't fill the screen.

The time spent with note4 about writing with keyboard (like email, etc) can be the same using this device or the border are a problem?
thanks!

If your fingers not to grip the edge of the screen, then you should have no issue. I was getting better at it, but then my case arrived and I stopped having to do it that way.

exactly: (excluding this bug) is it handy and smart writing with this device like a flat mobile?
thanks

Not exactly a "bug". More like a new way to use the phone. But yes, after training, you will have no issue typing one handed. But I would advise getting a case anyways, as the phone is slippery as hell.

Yes, I was using the TEKXodus ROM on my Note 4 phone which def had that. But I saw images online of the S6 have this come as standard. I really don't want to root this phone, so I am hoping there is some kind of solution.
That's cool mate cheers I was more than happy with the note so I should be over the moon with the s7 edge. So overall are u happy you switched?

90%. I just need to make sure the lack of swappable battery is not an issue. I actually have a charging station at my apartment for all my friends who came here with iphones and android phones who desperately need to charge their phones in the middle of the day. I never had this issue. I have literally never gone anywhere and asked if I can use a place to charge up. Bringing a few extra Note 4 batteries with me was always the solution. That's why it's a shame that there is no small jean pocket size solution for the S7, that can charge the phone fully within an hour.

The 6000mah Aukey battery is small and likely your best bet. You have to remember that a 3-4k battery won't fully charge your phone. Some of that capacity is lost due to heat and inefficiencies while charging. I carry the Aukey 6000mAh battery in my backpack and its light/small enough that I forget it's there. A smaller battery would be nice but it would need to be at least 4-5K if you want any possibility of a 0-100% charge. I had a RavPower 20100mah battery that only charger at ~60-70% efficiency which is pretty good for an external battery.

As a backpack battery, the Aukey 6000 is great.. But I barely carry a bag when i go out. And now that summer is coming up, I wont have a large jacket to carry the bag. So I need something I can carry in my jeans front pocket that has Quickcharge 2.0 so I don't have to keep it cabled for more than an hour.
