[Q] Getting another N5 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
So, 2 months ago i had a Nexus 5, and ofcourse, i had the popular issue of people not hearing me very well when i call them or they call me.
I have a Galaxy Note 3 atm, and a friend of mine ordered a new Nexus 5 from the U.S, and he offered to swap it for my Note 3.
My question is, is that issue still present in the nexus 5 sets ? Or did Google fix it already ?
Thank you :fingers-crossed:

I hope you're getting some cash as well... phone for phone isn't a very good deal for you in this case. The Note 3 retails for a lot more than what the N5 does.
Edit: Also, I never had the problem you described. Everyone always says I sound super clear to them, like I'm on a landline.

The note 3 is used though and the nexus 5 new. Suppose it depends how used the note 3 is.
Op, make a call on the n5 before accepting the n5. I read a funny thread the other day about someone who has a certain pitch of voice that phones interpret his voice as "noise" so noise cancellation removes his voice from phone calls

Oh man that's hilarious! Sucks to be that guy lol
Good point about it being used, I didn't think about that. OP should still look and see what used Note 3s are going for, I'd imagine it's still more than a new N5.

I had a used T-Mobile Note 3 that was in good condition and I traded it for a brand new black, 32gb Nexus 5 plus $150 cash. I believe a used Note 3 is about $500-550 and a brand new (never opened) Nexus 5 32gb is $400 (not including tax and shipping from the play store). The OP has to take in consideration which gigabyte version he's getting with the trade to get a fair dollar amount.

I know my Note 3 is worth more, but he's my lifetime friend so i'm not going to take anything on top of his N5
So far only 2 peeps answered my question, others are more concerned about cash on top and blah blah... silly

I thought your question was already answered. Even you confirmed that "2 peeps" answered your question. Are you looking for a poll?
I haven't had any issues other than when you make a phone call every now and then the call doesn't go through and you have to switch to AIRPLANE mode for about 10 seconds for the call to go through.

The noise cancellation issue can be temporarily fixed by editing your build prop if rooted, or simply covering up the secondary mic.

Apologies I'm unable to find the post at this moment. One of the many microphone threads, I was going to suggest they cover the secondary mic as a temporary solution when someone else uneventfully posted that one line in the build prop disables noise cancellation and fixes the issue. I will keep searching and edit this if I find it.

Thanks sir

So i guess that issue iss till around in few N5 sets, let's hope the one i'm getting is OK

You can disabled noise cancelation in build.prop
change...
persist.audio.fluence.voicecall=true

There are some noise cancellations issues which we believe to be software related. We hope the issue is solved in the next update, but we can't say for sure.

Hello all, I am new to the Nexus 5. I bought mine two days ago. I was really impressed with it at first, but now I'm being told by everyone who I speak to on calls, I sound distant, fuzzy and my mic is crackling. Also, there's a few black dots on the screen. I have done some quick research and found lots and lots of information regarding this issue. However, what I really want to know is, considering this is annoying me like crazy, is it even worth returning it and getting another one? I seen a few posts on other sites and one user had returned 5 times and still had faults. I don't know if I can trust LG again. The problem is, I love this phone so much! :/ I have 30 days to return my phone because of these faults and can either get a refund or an exchange. I don't even think there are any alternatives in the £300 price range :/ I sold my iPhone 5C for this as well! :/

Do you really have issues with your phone or are you just trolling. I notice your screen name is "Angry_Nexus5"?
I have neither of the issues you've described. My Nexus 5 seems to be perfect minus a software glitch when making calls. If you are having issues then definitely replace it through warranty. No need to ask anyone for permission to do so.

That's certainly promising. I can't see how they'd be able to overlook such a big hardware flaw if it is hardware, so I guess software could be the problem.
We all have the microphone issue. It just depends how much we notice it. Dodgy noise cancellation algorithm. Just record a video with the tv in the background, you'd probably notice it

I'm definitely not pretending it doesn't exist. I guess I've never noticed the issue since I never used video recording on this phone. Also no one has told me anything about the call quality having static. If its a known issue that you can bear with then I'd say wait it out and see if the issue gets rectified with the next software update but then again black dots on the screen might be a bit annoying for me to view so I'd probably still do the replacement.

It is a well known issue and has easy fixes as well. Simply covering the secondary mic is one of them, check out the threads discussing this issue for more help.
Personally I haven't had anyone complain about my voice and they seem to hear me fine for the most part so I've not taken any action. You also mentioned you may have dead pixels and if so you might want to RMA because of that.
The vast majority of users don't come on to report "all is well here" and so when you read forums you get a concentration of people with issues, or some unlucky/overly picky RMAers.

Migrating to Nexus 5?

Hey, I have a couple of quick questions. About 4 months ago I came over to Android from several years on iOS (all Jailbroken & heavily modded devices). I was up for contract renewal with AT&T, and I am still grandfathered in on the old Unlimited Data plan. At the time all I knew about Android, is that I liked how much better it had gotten with Jellybean and that I thought I wanted to give Android a try. At the time I was under the impression that Android was much more open & customizable, and easier to work with. AT&T changed that experience for me. I ended up going with a red Samsung Galaxy S4 because I like the hardware, thinking that if I didn't like the Samsung interface, I could just flash Vanilla Android from Google.......as everybody knows now, not the case. I really like Android and prefer the Vanilla experience to Samsung's Touchwiz interface. their Knox security (and Knox 2.0 coming soon), and the fact that it is not optional has left a very bad taste in my mouth, in addition to the locked bootloader on the GS4. I have also been playing around with Android Studio and am looking at getting into some Android development. So for me, it's time to jump ship and move to the much more user-friendly (mod friendly) Nexus 5.
So for anybody who has come over to the Nexus 5 from another phone, what issues did you run into switching over?
From what I've read, both use a micro sim, so I should be able to just put my sim in the Nexus 5 and go, right?
I currently have root on the GS4 and backup all my stuff to Google drive with Titanium Backup. Theoretically, I should be able to install Titanium backup on the Nexus and restore my apps & app data, correct?
Anything else I should be aware of? I need to make as smooth of a transition as possible. GS4 is then getting restored to factory and is getting sold to pay for a good chunk of the Nexus 5.
I also plan to go with the 32 GB Nexus 5 since there is no SD card slot. Advice on this decision? Thanks for any information and suggestions. I look forward to soon becoming a Nexus 5 owner and member of this forum community.
-Jeremy

That looks cool. Nexus 5 came in this last Friday, and my Spigen SlimArmor case & Nilkin Tempered glass protector came Monday. Over the weekend I was able to get the bootloader unlocked and got the phone rooted. So much easier on the Nexus. Can't get much easier than:
"adb bootloader unlock"
I got my S4 back to stock and getting ready to list it on Swappa.
I had one other question regarding the IMEI. You mention calling AT&T to update the IMEI, but I've done some reading and it's my understanding that once you make some calls from the new device after moving your SIM over to it, the IMEI is automatically updated in AT&T's system within 48 hrs. Can anyone here confirm this? Anything else I need to do? Everything is working great on the Nexus 5.
Thanks. I already love this phone!

Can not confirm the auto IMEI switch for you but if there is truth to what you mention than i would call to have it switched sooner than the 48 hour auto period .

Sprint Galaxy Note 5 Thread

I had to fight with UPS today for 2 hours, but I got my Galaxy Note 5. In short, I'm glad I got it. I'm sure, like always, each carrier will have their differences, but this is one SLICK SEXY phone.
Out the box I had 25%, I burned through it just doing app updates and setting up my information on the phone and then I tried the Wireless Charging...Guys, it's good! Like really good! I don't even have the Fast Wireless Charging dock. I have the Samsung Galaxy Mini Wireless Charging Pad and that finished up in just over 2 hours, so that Fast Wireless Charger is going to charge as fast as the end of a Prom date. Don't prejudge the phone over what you heard. Use it.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Guess u don't use much storage, that's why u don't have a problem with it. And of course you're going to notice a decent bump in performance coming from a note 3. I've warned everyone I know to not upgrade to the 5 and either get a note 4, or don't drop their 4 cause of Samsung pulling them.
I had to fight with ups as well. Somehow ups got my address wrong... It was either ups or Sprint. Either way I have it.

i use tons of storage... i carry at least 8TB of hard drives everyday. i just don't install many apps and music is all cloud based now for me. movies are kept on a segate wifi drive, i always have a otg adapter and flash ready, but most of the time i just stream netflix/amazon. the majority of my internal storage on my devices are now roms or flashing related crap.
because of the number of devices i have i find it easier to do it the way i do rather than have redundant info on multiple devices - still happens sometimes and i forget which tablet/phone has a certain movie or song... still can find my damn Fried Chicken from Beatnuts!
i started not using an external sd when i got my s4, just as a test, and it worked out for me. so getting an n6 and n9 wasn't too much trouble as i knew what to expect.
though i do think the removal of the SD slot isn't b/c they studied that most people don't use it, but rather that people are suckers and will toss an extra $100 for 32GB.

Totally agree with this. Iphone suckers have been dealing with this the whole time. I've only have known like 2 iPhone users that would pay all that money for a 128 gb iPhone. Most got the 16 or 32 gb versions and became very limited on what they put on their phone.
just got my order in. not time to play with it yet. damn, i forgot that samsung switched to 16:9 ratio. makes this thing less massive than i thought (huge negative for me). it's the same width as the note 2 but ~3/16 taller.

Wasn't asking about volte as that is not phone related at this time. Was asking if the phone itself was capable, as in dual radios.

Verizon Galaxy Note 5 on Project Fi

In case anyone is wondering, the Verizon Galaxy note 5 is fully functional on Project Fi. I have a V note 5 and a Nexus 5X I swapped sims, and with the edition of an APN change the Note 5 worked perfectly. Even pulling twice the download speeds of the Nexus 5. Strangely enough.

Then multiple people ask what needs to be done and what do ya know - no freaking response. I'm positive you're not the only source for this information, I'm just trying to make a point.

New Here

Hey guys I'm new here just Traded in My Note 7 and decided to give LG a try because of the recall. Haven't owned an LG in years, and usually stick with Samsung for Android and the iPhone. Can say so far after I received the Marshmallow update last night thus phone has been a beast. Only thing I'm missing is Samsung Pay but with only one card that actually worked with it it's not much of a lost. Just wanted to say hi. Ill be around waiting for the LG V20 announcement and the new iPhone but so far no regrets.

I did the same thing yesterday. I know that was Samsung's first recall, but for something like that to get by qa I'll let the Note 7 be enjoyed by others
Did the same thing this morning. I'm not all that impressed by the dac on this phone. How does it sound to you guys? I haven't updated to marshmallow yet, can that be it?
DAC sounds fine to me you can't take dollar headphones and expect to be mind blown by the sound quality. Get some nice pair of cans so you can actually hear the difference. Mine sounds very good using it with a pair of HD 630VB.
Phone was running very well to me, but today it won't connect calls with Voice over LTE enabled . Damn I can't catch a break. Does anyone know if this is common. It did the Marshmallow update, and another one last night.

Well update, toggled everything on and off and working so far.
Lol. I guess we are the Displaced Note 7 users. Lol.
Edit: Voice over LTE not working. But I'll just deal with it, I guess the good thing is when I decide what phone I want to get next I can probably return without a restocking fee.

There is an issue with VoLTE on the latest update where you can't hear the ringing when you make a call, but the call will work. Have you tried waiting to see if the call does connect?

This phone + dac fix + power amp + high quality audio files = awesomeness
If you haven't updated to Marshmallow not all apps work with the dac, that could be why you are not hearing improvements. Either update to MM or get the dac fix.
