Hi All
I am looking to move from a HTC One X to a Moto G. My question in on the camera is it the same or better than my current HTC One X??

One X camera is better. Moto G camera is really slow and most pictures require a really steady hand. But I think it takes better low light pictures than the One X, like on the one X all low light pictures were very grainy/fuzzy so that's less out here. You'll definitely notice a bump in battery life though.
Since I did the exact move you're planning maybe a list of pros and cons of moving to moto g will help you
Pros:
Kitkat(and one more update hopefully)
Battery Life(I've got 4.5 hours of screen on time vs the 3 hours I was getting on my One X) This is the entire reason for me shift to the Moto G
Faster(?)
No random heating scenes(which wasn't really fixed on the One X)
Charges pretty quick
Cons:
Smaller Screen
Camera not as good
Prefer the slim dimensions of the One X

Camera is not good at moto g!

These photos look pretty good to me. I'm of the school that if you what the "best" photos, then use a camera. But for those quick, unplanned pics, your phone is always handy.

the camera on the Moto G is beyond awful

I forgot to mention, the speaker of Moto G is louder than the One X by a considerable amount.
@japoina92 those are some good pics mate. Never got a decent snap like that so far. Maybe my hands are too shaky

You have a thread just for posting moto G pictures in "Moto G Themes and Apps" section.

Just thought I'd throw this one in here for anyone put off by Moto G camera reviews. I have had my Moto G for some time now and it remains to be a solid, reliable phone. However, a recent sale for the Lumia 925 came up so I grabbed one as it's supposed to have a decent camera on it.
Well, having done some comparisons between the two, I can categorically confirm that 9 times out of 10 the Moto G produces more well rounded images than the Lumia. Granted, at low light, the G cannot compete, but under normal lighting conditions its actually slightly better, even when zoomed in. Text is no clearer on the 925 than it is on the G. I was really surprised by this and a little gutted I even bothered with the 925. If anyone is interested, I can upload some comparisons.

Actually, I was a bit too hasty to post in all honesty. I've just done some further comparisons, more accurately, taking into consideration the field of view of the 925 and by transferring the images actually off the two devices and comparing them side by side on the same screen. the edge has now tipped in favor of the 925, but not by a huge degree. The brighter of the two images is the moto one.

well,i'm not photograph genius ,i think l925 got more detail and a bit less noise, especially by zoom in,but not by far, moto g in your picture still take a great picture. i really surprise :good:
i have to agree though, moto g not the best camera out there but sometimes, under a certain condition,it will take a great photo :highfive:

Well guys sometimes in class I have to take pictures of sombdy's else notes or a pic of something on notice board...mostly printed stuff
It shudnt be high quality....just legible
You think moto g can handle that.?

Easily. It's a capable camera, no where near as bad as had been made out.

[Q] Moto G vs Galaxy S3

I have an order placed for the Moto G, but now have the opportunity to get a brand new Galaxy S3 for $200 off-contract. Specs wise the phones are very similar; with the S3 having a bigger (AMOLED) screen, SD support, and a plethora of accessories & ROMs. This along with a removable battery & better camera have me leaning towards the S3.
Do any Moto G owners currently have an S3? If so could I get an opinion on whether its worth cancelling my order & purchasing the older phone.
Get both and then sell the one you don't want. Specs wise the S3 wins but the moto G seems to ignore that factor.
Sent from my XT1032 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
i would say s3 has better camera but that is about it.
moto g is snappy and has great batterylife and screen. also moto g will get 4.4 in january so my guess is that it will also get the next version of android.
I had an s3 for about one year and sold it as soon I got the Moto g.
The s3 is a nice phone but the battery use to drain fast sometimes and have a lot of software issues. Also, even with cyanogenmod it freezes sometimes. The screen is bigger but not that much and in comparison with the moto g it looses in brightness.
GPS and Google now consumes a LOT of battery on the s3 while in moto g they barelly appear in the battery graphics consumption. Also, the moto g have a better design and feels great in hand, while the s3 is kinda ungly and you will need to use it with both hand in lots of situations.
I'm in love with my moto g and selling my s3 to buy it was one of the best choices I made. It runs android flawless!!!
I did camera comparison in low light without flash, left MotoG, middle RAZRi, right Galaxy S3:
http://www.android-hilfe.de/motorol...n-zur-kamera-bildqualitaet-2.html#post6758301
These are png's so they are 1:1 quality, no forum crop or reduced quality.
I have both phones, both on stock ROM. The S3 is getting more and more laggy.
Pro S3: Slimmer, less weight, slightly bigger screen, better camera
Pro MG: Blazing fast, feels more sturdy, Kitkat in '14, no balderdash, great battery life
If it wasn't for NFC & removable SD support I'd ditch my S3 right away.
Get the Moto G. Pure Android is great... Just got mine yesterday and i'm loving it.. Feel much better in my hands than my nexus4.
This is the phone i was waiting since Android came out
I've had an S3 and currently have a Moto G. I'd definitely say the Moto G, it's faster/smoother, better screen, better battery life etc. IMO of course
Get the Galaxy s3. More capable and better resale value.
Assuming the Galaxy s3 is legit and won't get blacklisted.

That and the glass back are the two things i hated about the n4. It felt like it just did not belong in my hand.
Talk about coincidence OP..in the same situation
I'll make the story short and brief..I purchased a S3 for 240 CDN and havent picked it up yet
However I can still get the Moto G for 65 CDN should I want to..its apart of a carrier deal + gift card redemption
The only true differences (to me anyway) is camera and memory
1) Never cared for a phone on a camera
2) There are smaller external options to increase memory
Another problem is build...and by touching the dummy products, the Moto G feels alot stronger...Samsung cellphones r amazing but I cant stand the overall build..I've seen too many broken S3 screens
Any comments would be most appreciated..I'm upgrading from an iPhone 3G btw...
Just to let you guys know, I just woke up and pushed my Moto G to the floor (hard floor) today. It's the third time I let this phone fall and it does not broke. Not a single scratch

Hi, unfortunately I can't see the difference from these pictures.
I have the choice between buying a used S3 or a new Moto G for the same price, and the camera quality is important for me. I would like to get at least the quality that I had with my (broken) Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
Is the difference really that noticeable ? thx

OK thanks for the advice.
There is one thing that I see : when there is no stabilizer, the image is more blurry, indeed !
Hey Guys can anyone tell me should I go for the Moto g or galaxy s3 or Galaxy S4 Mini? I can buy a brand new moto G and with that price I can get a used s3 and s4 mini here in India. Anyone can help me? I am totally confused.

[Q] Moto G camera vs Xperia L camera

I was about to buy Xperia L a month ago but due to some issues with it I decided not to, moreover, I got to know about Moto G and I'm really happy with the specs.
The only thing that is holding me back is the camera. How is Moto G's camera against XL? I know I'm comparing 5mp vs 8mp, but still.
If Moto G's camera is as good as XL than I'm sold. heh!
Oh, and I'm really sorry if I posted this in wrong section.
The camera is mediocre, but it's a little better than my Galaxy Nexus in some ways. That doesn't say much.

Mediocre compared to what exactly, a reflex camera? Then sure, it is mediocre.
But tbh i find it quite average, during the day it can take some really nice pictures though at night seems to be quite dissapointing.
Overall its more than enough for casual pictures to post at facebook/tweeter, etc but ofc you wont be taking professional pictures to work with.
Compared to a flagship phone's camera or the last two Nexuses.

Thanks alot guys! I don't plan to take professional like photos with it, obviously. I just need a smartphone with a decent camera to post pics on facebook/twitter etc. Thanks again. Cheers.

BUMP! Thanks for the link, 72off.
The wait for Moto G is kiling me. lol. I think the rear camera would be fine for me, though, pictures seems to be a little out of focus and blurry but I'll take it.
I haven't seen any front facing camera sample of Moto G, so I was wondering if someone can upload it(maybe a selfie?) if it is not too much to ask. heh!

Do you think Motorola made the G camera look worse then the X's on purpose?

Have you guys noticed that nothing has been done about the G camera's excess noise reduction? It smudges a lot of the detail that should be there but isn't.
I have a feeling that the Aptina AR0543 CMOS sensor can take significant more detailed pictures but Motorola saw it and thought: "hmmm this camera is too good and it will make the Moto G too much of a good deal compared to the X" so they added some ridiculous software noise reduction to make pictures look worse and thus make consumers think "hmmm if I want a good camera I should spend the extra money and get the X"
I know some people will think this is unlikely, but there's no good reason why the noise reduction is so high on the Moto G's camera and considering that the Moto G is the saving grace for Motorola while the X hasn't really sold that well, they should just give up and make the Moto G's camera even better by getting rid of the noise reduction and tuning the colors so they keep selling more and more Moto G's.
What do you think?
yes this is true.. even my good old galaxy apollo's 3.1MP shooter is far better than Moto G's. camera is the worst thing happened to Moto G.
Sent from my XT1033 using Tapatalk
Yes. See this. Moto X had the same problem with the noise reduction.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/7353/moto-x-update-dramatically-improves-camera-quality
Either Motorola doesn't know yet(post on their forums about it a lot so they know) OR they're not updating it on purpose so the Moto X camera looks better.
Yeah, I think they overcompensated with the noise reduction, that should be a post-effect. My beef is with the white balance, it's noticeably blue. They're all software issues and I can't see how that could have been missed. All the hardware is there for a decent picture.
Subject also discussed here:

I wonder if just a bomb tickin to explode with an update (as waht they did with the X)
Maybe they update it once the competing phones comes out

Exactly. I don't see how somebody at Motorola can look at a sample image and thought that is acceptable for production unless they wanted it to be that way. Every Moto G seems to look like a oil painting when zoomed at 100% and they have to know by now but for some reason they haven't even acknowledged it despite this phone being one of the best phones of 2013 and every single publication and user online saying the camera is the single flaw in this phone.
If they never deliver a firmware update, it's got to be intentional. Hopefully I'm wrong and they are just dragging their feet since its not a very profitable device.

I hope that it's an oversight on Moto's part. I mean the sale to Lenova was somewhat hushed and timed just after release--they probably wanted to make sure it had a market presence to allay any misgivings in the acquisition. In that sense they may have pushed for release and not vetted the software as they may otherwise have done. There have been issues with the camera app itself.

Hopefully people have already been doing that along with posting on their forum.
I am suspecting this as well.
The MSM8226 processor is supposed to be 1.4 GHz but in our Moto G it is underclocked to 1.2GHz.
5MP camera is good enough to take 1080p video, but for moto g the maximum is only 720p.
It could be the same for picture quality, they try to distinct their flagship and their budget phone by making Moto G looks worst.
Did you already find an open thread about this topic on Motorola forum?

What's the point of having it clocked to 1.4 when 1.2 is already smooth as butter? It will just waste battery life.
What's the point of having it record 1080p videos when it only has a 720p screen? It will just waste memory.
I think you guys should start thinking about this logically before assuming moto is out to purposely make the moto g terrible. Optimizations of battery life and file size are important, especially on a phone that has a non removable battery and no SD card slot.

Actually its 1.6ghz and you can overclock it easily with the Faux Kernel.
I personally think the underclocking was done for battery life though.

Where is your evidence that processor clock at 0.2GHz slower will actually save much battery? how many percent?
It might be smooth for now but that doesn't mean it will be smooth after major android update in the future.
Really? do you mean that those phone out there that can take 1080p cannot shoot in 720p? there wasn't any option for that?
I didn't say Motorola try to make Moto G terrible, I'm just saying they try to distinct their flagship and non-flagship.
In fact, I think Moto G is a terrific product for under 200 US dollar but by looking at the capability of Moto G hardware, I wish it could be better.
Back to topic, what do you think Motorola is trying to "save" here by having excess noise reduction for the camera?

You're kind of taking us off topic here. Nobody has a problem with the SoC, and few people care about 1080p video since 720p is enough for most people and the screen is 720p anyway.
The image quality is the real problem here. Another issue is the fact that the video camera records at too low a bitrate.

First thoughts and camera samples

So I'm coming from S6 to this budget device due to the terrible battery life on S6. So first Impressions of play are this. Screen is sharp and looks great even when only 1080p. The experience is snappy and fluid no issues so far even when playing more intensive games. The camera has me blown away as previous Moto cameras suck but this is great. Overall I'm satisfied as hell
I'm in exactly the same position. S6 currently on ebay and now enjoying outstanding battery life

Look at those images! Day light image so far so stunning. I think it's a tad on a warmer side I just opened image in photoshop and moved kelvin (temperature) slider towards cooler so it looks probably the way it should look. Lizard is rich detail with some nice colour reproduction (natural and vibrant) complimented with bokeh effect to it naturally wrapping around. WoW
Low light is little weak but overall ok. How did you focus in low light? How do you find focus working? This phone impresses me!
White balance correct.
I just used the circle focus put it on subject and snapped. Light needed adjusted using slider but overall pretty easy and quick snaps.
Why I get impression you have the same background? Same guy? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCrUL7uZ1F4

Take 1 cookie and 1 tube of superglue. Glue cookie to floor, then call son into room. You'll have plenty of time to get some snaps whilst he tries to get the cookie!

Well, thinking about returning it, that is, to be honest.
I'm kinda mad at the lack of gyroscope and gestures. Waving my hand to wake up the Moto Display was very convenient for me. The Moto X 2014 is better than the Moto X Play in all areas except battery life and camera (which I don't care that much about). Plus, it's really bigger than what I expected, coming a Moto X 2013. I had tried the 2014 and it was still cool, but the Play is even larger.
I've been thinking a lot about it, considering I only have 10 days to return it. It's great for everything I'm doing with a cellphone (except the photospheres that I do just for the lulz and show off tbh), I shouldn't miss the chop chop action too much since it wasn't even on the Moto X 2013, same for the IR sensors since the Lollipop update.
The question is: could I get better buck for money?
And I think I can, if I shop enough on ebay; I'm thinking about buying the Droid Turbo instead. Bigger battery, better specs, smaller, better software (with Moto gestures), same price. I heard it was unlocked on GSM frequencies and I'm in Canada (can someone correct me?), so I wouldn't even have to unlock it. More futureproof imo.
I'll probably get used to the physical buttons. The IPS screen is so ugly with blacks. I don't want to "see" the black bar! It's really bluer than the 2013 screen (which was yellow-ish), and it kinda feels cheap to me. But maybe it's only me. However it's much much brighter (minimum brightness on the Play is around half brightness on the 2013), so that's a good point!
I also received my Moto X Play today and am very pleased with it so far!
The only weird thing i have encountered is that i usually use procapture for my main camera but it seems stuck with 13mp. Anyone else have this app and problem?

However it's much much brighter (minimum brightness on the Play is around half brightness on the 2013), so that's a good point!

i am also on the hunt for a droid turbo. and also i am rocking the moto x 2013 (skipped x 2014 because of the battery). really hate motorola this year. i mean i do hate everything apple but they have some sense releasing a small device and a larger one. however motorola released a larger device and an even larger one. also, they put the larger battery on the smaller device and the smaller battery on the larger device !!!.

Yeah. I really don't like the "branding"/marketing part of Apple, but another part I really liked of them was that they weren't trying to win the specs race (à la Samsung), but instead focused on user experience and software optimization. Motorola did that when it got acquired by Google, giving birth to things like the Moto G being faster than the Galaxy S5 for everyday tasks like opening apps and stuff.
After 5.1 on the Moto X 2013 though, it became buggy, doing a full software optimization everytime I soft reset, sometimes shutdowning because of hotness (I guess?), after I plugged it into the Moto X Play charger for instance... Also the "Read SMS aloud" seemed to be activated everywhere, every place, even when I was at work where I had set silent mode and was in a meeting on my calendar (?!?!).
So yeah. I really hope it was because it's a 2 yo device and the Moto X Play will handle these features better. I'm quite happy they brought back FM Radio on a "not entry model", it has become something that most flagships lack but every entry level phones have! (Except Samsung because Samsung & Gadgets, y'know.)
ANYWAY
Back to the subject: I took many photos and some videos today (college hazings! ), and I'm quite happy with the results. Indoor quality still isn't perfect (seems nice on screen, but as soon as you zoom in you see motion blur if the subjects weren't totally still). Outdoor quality is really nice though. However, when taking videos, there seems to be a noticeable lag on screen, around half a sec. It's weird and gives the impression there's OIS. On the total opposite, one thing I'm really impressed with is the photo taking speed. The 2013 would take forever to focus, wait and snap. The X Play basically just, well, takes a live screenshot of what is on screen with no waiting at all.
The X 2013 was actually my first smartphone, so I dunno if the average is "instant photo snap" à la X Play or the "wait one sec then snaps it" à la 2013. I know the X 2013 didn't have the best camera (and it's an euphemism), but I don't care much about it tbh.
Also, as expected, panoramas suck. I dunno if you're supposed to scroll it or rotate (à la Photosphere), but rotating seems totally not working, although it was working with the Moto X 2013 and the Moto Camera app...
I'm very pleased with the camera on this device. It's the best camera I've ever had on any phone. Here's a picture of my cousin's cat that I took this weekend on my last CyanogenMod build with the stock CM camera.
The detail and overall quality are outstanding. The compression used by imgur detracts from the quality a bit at 100%, the original is even better. I give the camera two thumbs up.

This one with [email protected], I assume, since HDR is on auto, the sun low at 7 pm, shining from the side onto the Cologne Cathedral, giving its gothic structures a very graphical appearance. Just the highlights are somewaht too bright. The image says it was taken with 1/120 sec, so not the top sharpness due to hand motion.
Here are some photos I took indoor, in bright artificial light however. Just did a quick snap and moved on. I used the manual exposure and focus in the stock Moto camera app (which is really annoying, no tap to focus, no shutter button).
Mostly macro shots. Getting closer than 4 cm doesn't focus.

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Moto G5 Plus come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
More of marketing gimmick. Good hardware but worst software. Chinese developers don't know how to code. Lenovo killed the Moto brand

The camera is poor. I have no Idea why is there so many people defending the camera on this device, but it's nothing special.

It is advisable for you to stop posting on this forum coz you don't own a moto g5 plus which is clearly visible in your profile.
Camera is the main highly of the phone. ?
What are you talking about? I'm writing this from my Moto G5 plus. Just because you disagree with me it doesn't mean that I'm not allowed to post here. In my opinion the camera is nothing special, even my old galaxy s4 and Lumia 730 are able to get some better snaps in good lighting conditions.

Low light is bad compared to 2016 flagships. I just tested with my S7 and it kills the G5 Plus. If camera is most important to you, I recommend getting a used S7 for about the same price. Good lighting is fine.
I really like the G5 plus camera, compared to my old phones (Xperia z3 compact, moto g4 plus, nexus 4 and others) I think it's a really good camera for its price range. And I don't even tried to unlock the boot loader and use the hdr+ Google camera, thats looks even better on snaps.
The camera is okay. I take lots of pictures with it, they look fine.
When I really care about the picture looking nice, if I'm with other people, if those people have a modern flagship phone, I'll ask them to take the picture. And those pictures look significantly better.
Google's hdr+ really helps in low light too. Stock rom, using the 32-bit apk found in a thread here with camera2 API enabled via build.prop.
This is more light than I could see with my own eyes, alley building lights in the distance only. Forget S7, this rivals low light on my $2500 Sony A7s!

Ebay, Craigslist, and Swappa if you're in the USA.
Coming from moto e 1st gen which i bought for Rs 7000 in 2014. This phone has a pretty good camera at this price point considering that i bought it for Rs 10000. And i love the professional mode in this camera. You just have to know how to use the camera for good shots. It would be great to have Raw support in stock camera. But i love it.
Some samples.
I personally think moto did an awful work with this camera, even my 2015 nexus 5 beats it anytime its pitted against it.

Moto did screw it up with their processing of the image. But turn it off by applying the chromatix mod and extend your DR with the Google Camera from defcomg/savitar, and the pics coming off of this are actually pretty amazing.

Actually im waiting for moto to provide oreo stock ota. hopefully they will also release stable 64bit sources also as oreo only support 32 bit kernel sources as of now. If not i gues that is the final choice i have. Untill that I'm struck on good ol nexus 5. low light images on nexus 5 are just sweet despite having f2.4 camera.

Thanks dude
Any of you tried the new cam update on the G5Plus? I think it's great! I have the S7 edge and took pictures with both phones of the same thing. Then as they uploaded to Google photos, I had a hard time distinguish which is which without looking at the info. Moto G5Plus in low light. Ignore the mess, I'm before moving. I did not selectively focused just point and shoot. Look at the sharpness on the books and the glass bunny. These pics were made near midnight with only floor lamps farther away.
Glad they've been improving the stock shooter! I noticed an update, but for some reason the new app is having trouble with video recording so I might go back. Google Camera running on here has been blowing everything else out of the water, but those shots are very respectable.
