How are the Radios? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For those of you who switched from another smartphone how are the radios from LG.
I currently have an HTC One and it is passable in my workload, but nothing to write home about. I'm looking at phones now to JUMP with and the N5 is what I really really want but the terrible battery and unknown radios worry me a lot.
So how are you finding them? I don't care about speed, I care about the ability to get and hold signal. Compared to your last device is it better or worse.

first off, your questions dont go into the general section, they go into the q&a section.
now, whatever you read from bloggers is mostly untrue.
the battery life on the nexus 5 is actually very good. i average about 5-6 hours screen on time. also, im with tmobile in nyc, theres absolutely not a single issue with the radios for me. calls sound great, they dont drop. and data speeds are very fast, i average arounf 30mbps download and 20mbps upload speeds.

I don't go on bloggers, I know what I've gotten with other devices (namely the One) and the average I've seen throughout forums. I don't believe in turning off features I use such as location reporting and such. Most I've seen with same/similar usage as I aren't getting great battery life. Top that with the fact that I work in a Studio in the middle of a building and get minimal signal as it is, I have to assume I will get lower then average battery life.

WiFI radio is okay not as good as my Galaxy s3 or my iPhone 5C

Stumbling upon a really great ROM/Kernel/Modem combination

Cognition v3.04 + Speedmod latest version + JL3 modem
Simply put: amazing. Several things are worthy of note. First, scrolling and general responsiveness of the speedmod kernel with 500hz is buttery smooth. It also has several tweaks you can enable to maximize battery life. But, the greatest difference came with the JL3 modem. Everything was instantly snappier. GPS locked in 4 seconds flat (I kid you not), and soon had 12 locked satellites. I had never before seen a lock with 5m accuracy, and it held it like a champ. Second, DL/UL speeds went through the roof. Normally I'd see 1.5Mb D and .3 Mb up. Now I see 3.5 Mbit down and 1.4 Mbit down. Couldn't be happier. But it gets better. The battery voltage before showed 3950 millivolts. Now it's down to 3750 mV.
Better GPS, speed, internet and battery life? Awesome.
Have you tried to make a phone call? I had the same setup and thought I was on cloud 9...
Until I called my wife... She said, "it sounded like gremlins were trying eat me". So after a process of Modem flashing I've come to find that FOR ME is Cogs 3.04/Speedmod/UGHJK4 seems to be working good all around, except for my battery life isn't the greatest. Gonna give it a couple days to see if it pans out

I use Darkys rom but find that for my area JK4 has been the best so far as well. With JL3 it switches to the 1900 band frequently and in my house that gets worse reception so my battery drains fairly quickly.
As for the OP I know how you feel. Ever since I flashed an earlier version of Darky's I haven't looked back. It's been the best rom I've tried out of all of them. Despite being a complete flashing addict I've hung up the cable for the time being as I'm more than satisfied with my current set up.

Totally off topic, but that has to be THE BEST quote I have seen on this forum!
Back on topic, best combo and my current configuration is Perception 8 with Setiron's kernel. Just flashing the rom and the kernel gives me all working features that I need, plus speed and stability. And after I go through and take out all the apps that I don't use and incorporate all my necessary apps, I get around 54 hours of battery life before I need to throw it on the charger. That's with my normal everyday use consisting of mass amounts of texting, a few phone calls, browsing the web, and having 3 widgets running. All my syncing is set for 1 hour intervals, except for weather which is set for every half hour.
Not saying it will work the same for you, but it hasn't let me down at all, and it's been my daily driver for about 2 months.

Another Vote here for Darky's 9.02 with SpeedMod "Q" Kernel. I presently have the JT3 Modem and haven't had any complaints except I was at a friend's house yesterday and had a problem holding a Signal there,I might try a different Modem.
Firefly 2.0.5 w/ eSPyel oc/uv kernel based on Hardcore's q kernel with jk4 modem.... i have it oc'd at 1400... results may vary on diffrent phones... but this thing is blazing fast been hitting low 19's on linpack scores and battery is good....

Engadget names G2x top midrange phone.

Interesting.
Thinking about it I can't say I disagree, especially at current price points. With the disclaimer that it's primarily a hobbyist device, I don't think it's well suited for anyone who needs their phone to just work.
Yeah, this phone isn't exactly stable. Had an incident today, had to NANDROID restore.
Still. Has good days. Some bad....

I'm using Weapon ROM with Faux's 1.1 kernel - moderate use (20 mins of google music streaming, couple of air controller games, texts and one phone call) and I was just at 70% after 7.5 hours.
After using this phone for 4 months now, I can clearly say this phone is pretty decent. I've got the screen bleed and all, but all my lcd screens in my house have it to a certain degree. That's not a problem for me. This is my first LG product and I won't knock it too hard. I've owned cellphones for awhile now (first cellphone was in the mid 90's) and speaking strictly from the phone aspect of this device, it is better than most. The earpiece is a little low on the sound (you have to angle it just right to get it loud) but the speaker phone is loud and clear. The mic on here is good, I've never had complaints about my voice being unclear other than from people that are talking from HTC phones. Which brings me to my next point. The phone part of this phone kills HTC and the Iphone (Iphone is close to CB quality!). I think motorola and nokia are the only ones that sound better now.
P.S. My favorite phone of all time was the Motorola Timeport!

I'm getting pretty good battery life out of my G2X. I played ZDefense today for nearly 4 hours with music over stereo Bluetooth with wifi on and it ate about 45% of my battery. Normally I get about 20 hours of normal use (3 hours of s btooth, data off, wifi, surfing and Kindle). I charge every day but usually don't have to all the time.
It seems like turning data off really saves the battery as does living in a strong network area.

Zdefense is great, Hex defense is also, different enough to want to have both. When you say 4 hours gone on Zdefense, I understand.
I am one of those people with a lot of time near chargers, so battery is never an issue. I'm trying to keep this g2x stock. Only issue I've been having is some freezing when I'm on wifi and it's trying to use 2g, or when it really needs a power reset. I reset every day or two to keep it running smoothly enough.
Stock G2x. Zeam launcher.

The 1GHz vs 1.2GHz should not be any factor, it is faster than the 1.2GHz dual core Snapdragon in the Sensation, for example. The GPU in the G2x is also second only to that of the SGSII. The only thing I can think of is the fact that it has only 512MB of RAM.
I thought the range was based on cost after reading the article.

Cheer up Eeyore, there's no way of knowing that the phone has or has not reached the end of its support cycle. At least we have some great devs working on the device.
Speaking of endo of manufacture support, with the HTC Ruby (which is essentially a Sensation reboot) coming to T-Mobile in October I wonder what will happen with support for the Sensation (another reason I didn't take up T-Mobile's offer to exchange my G2X for the Sensation).

Battery check

Ugh, if there's one thing that annoys me more than anything else, it's the phone getting warm/hot.
If anyone wants to humor me and try this I'd really appreciate it. I want to get an idea of what other users phones are reporting temperature wise.
To get a good idea, if you will, download "batter monitor widget" and/or "system panel lite" from Google Play and use the browser for 5 mins and then use the XDA app for 5 mins and state what your temp is Fahrenheit. Thanks so much to those who try it.
I relocked the bootloader last night and flashed the 1.85 ruu and did all the unlocking and rooting. By the time I was done my phone showed a temp of 104. That seems too hot to me. I'm afraid that if it gets that hot regularly that the battery life will eventually take a hit.
P.S. You can also find the temp by calling *#*#4636#*#* and clicking on battery information.
After 15 minutes of playing Dungeon Hunter 2 I'm at 102.4F.
Do you want this done on wifi or cellular data? Using the cell radio will task the battery more than the wifi...
UPDATE: using cellular data on ics browser plus and xda app. After minutes of each, temp is 87 Fahrenheit. Maybe you have a dud? Mine doesn't usually get hot unless I'm playing a graphically intensive game

In my experience with high end androids this is about normal if CPU is working hard. Seen mine 100+ a few times.

I test mine with wifi on. I noticed it makes a difference if the room temperature is really warm i.e. no AC or fans. If it's really cool my will stay in the 80's but if it's mid day and it's like 85 outside and around 80 in the house I will notice just by browsing that it can reach about 95 almost every time.
I took one phone back already because I thought it was getting too warm but I'm on my 3rd One X now and all three have had the same temps overall so I'm thinking either I got three bad phones all with heating issues or it's normal.
I have OCD and see a psychologist and I mentioned to him about how I might be just obsessing and he told me that I WAS and to just stop thinking about it. He said that devices do get warm with use and any temp, even around 100, is normal for a smart phone because of the processing it does. He told me to take a look at his mac and see what the internal temp was and it was like 120 just after sitting idle.
I probably shouldn't have made this thread because most likely it looks like I'm just seeking reassurance, but I was curious to what other temps you guys were getting. Hopefully it would set my mind at ease.
P.S. I bothers me because we spend so much on these phones that I want one as close to perfect as I can get. If I see that I'm the only one with temps like 85-99 just from browsing for 10 mins or so then I know there is something wrong. On the other hand I wish I could just forget about it and use the phone normally.
These temps are well within the normal range. I have had the pleasure of owning about 10 phones in the last two years, all high end android phones. The heat dissipation of this phone is excellent compared to the international Galaxy S 2 HTC Infuse, Motorola Atrix and so on. Sadly there is no perfect phone but this is the closest you're going to get for now

Heat is Li-Ion's biggest enemy. You are right to be concerned. Anything over 86 degrees F is wearing down the electrolyte.
Humidity and ambient temp have a lot to do with the ability to get rid of heat. Just asking what temp a phone reaches after 5 minutes of some activity doesn't really give enough info. Ambient temp should also be posted along with results, and humidity if available. Altitude/air pressure also has an effect on getting rid of heat(should be minimal unless you are comparing sea level vs 5000 feet).

Is LTE good for you guys?

So I live about 40 minutes out of Washington DC and my LTE has never been all that great, I never saw the big deal. I get about 1 mBps down and it drains battery incredibly fast. HSPA+ is basically just as fast and used less battery. However, this weekend I took a trip to Atlanta and I ran a speed test and got 3.5 mBps down and the battery drained at a very nice rate. I was pleasantly surprised. So just want to hear if LTE is actually as advertised for y'all. I'm on AT&T, so not sure how it will differ for you those of you outside of the US.
Sounds like your local LTE strength is weak. That will indeed kill your battery.
Most places I go, I get decent signal strength and at least 10 Mbps. Battery life is fine unless I get stuck in a dead spot.
My home town (Jefferson City Missouri) just turned on LTE at the beginning of the month. I average about 10Mbps down and my fastest has been about 25Mbps down. Battery life is slightly less than HSPA+, but not much worse.
It depends on the location. LTE is suppose support more connections effectively. However, a tower could be down. If you are getting different speeds in different locations then it ma lay be the tower. Also, you said you live 40mins away. That plays a factor. I live 45mijs away from Nashville, but that is because the drive is on the interstate going 70, not like down the street.

In Melbourne Australia Telstra LTE is great.
Get around 30 mbps inbound and 18-20 mbps outbound.
Signal strength is 4 - 5 bars and battery drain is pretty much the same as with HSDPA

Yup, def sounds like OP is in a fringe reception area. I often get over 20 Mbps on LTE, and sometimes over 30 Mbps (depending on work or home location), and battery life is very good (often get close to 48 hours with low usage). But the LTE coverage in my area seems very good.
LTE has also done wonders for the data connection at my house. I'm almost always on WiFi at home, but when I've had to fall back to cell network data, it was absolutely awful on HSPA+. On HSPA+, I was getting really slow data speed, 1 Mbps at best, and often a fraction of that, with frequent dropouts just trying to browse webpages. Now on LTE, its rock solid and the speed is excellent (not as good as at my work, but over 15 Mbps).
Everyone's experience is going to be different, depending on location. Some people actually get comparable or even higher speeds on HSPA+, and better battery life. But they are probably not in good reception areas.
Let's not forget building structures, population, and weather. There is a lotbof factors that play a part in reception. I did a speed test on HSDPA plus, and I got 6mb up and 3 down. I haven't done it on LTE yet. But the speed seems faster than my WiFi when I do travel to Nashville.

If I'm not mistaken, HSPA doesn't go that fast. Sounds like you got your test in megabits not megabytes. There's eight megabits in a megabyte.

I have LTE turned off and i've noticed i get atleast an hour extra of screen time due to this.
Still am able to stream pandora on my hourly commute.
AT&T LTE is on and off in my area. I think they're testing it.

SOC lottery?

So it seems like there is so much variation in battery performance for the S7 (more than other phones) and I was wondering if I just got bad luck with my chip. I struggle to get 4 hrs SOT and that's with social media, YouTube, text, email, etc. Mostly WiFi and no gaming or Google maps. Try using a dark or black theme, get Disabler Pro and check what people are disabling depending on your needs, get Greenify and setup agr. doze, I don't use auto brightness but change to my liking if I need, also disable wifi search, these are few I can think of right now but with my usage I get between 6.30-9 hours SOT and 1 to 2 days, depending on the tasks I'm performing. I get twice the battery time of my s6 edge with same usage. I'm on Tmob s7 930 snapdragon 820.
