Is LTE good for you guys? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

So I live about 40 minutes out of Washington DC and my LTE has never been all that great, I never saw the big deal. I get about 1 mBps down and it drains battery incredibly fast. HSPA+ is basically just as fast and used less battery. However, this weekend I took a trip to Atlanta and I ran a speed test and got 3.5 mBps down and the battery drained at a very nice rate. I was pleasantly surprised. So just want to hear if LTE is actually as advertised for y'all. I'm on AT&T, so not sure how it will differ for you those of you outside of the US.

Sounds like your local LTE strength is weak. That will indeed kill your battery.
Most places I go, I get decent signal strength and at least 10 Mbps. Battery life is fine unless I get stuck in a dead spot.

My home town (Jefferson City Missouri) just turned on LTE at the beginning of the month. I average about 10Mbps down and my fastest has been about 25Mbps down. Battery life is slightly less than HSPA+, but not much worse.

It depends on the location. LTE is suppose support more connections effectively. However, a tower could be down. If you are getting different speeds in different locations then it ma lay be the tower. Also, you said you live 40mins away. That plays a factor. I live 45mijs away from Nashville, but that is because the drive is on the interstate going 70, not like down the street.

In Melbourne Australia Telstra LTE is great.
Get around 30 mbps inbound and 18-20 mbps outbound.
Signal strength is 4 - 5 bars and battery drain is pretty much the same as with HSDPA

Yup, def sounds like OP is in a fringe reception area. I often get over 20 Mbps on LTE, and sometimes over 30 Mbps (depending on work or home location), and battery life is very good (often get close to 48 hours with low usage). But the LTE coverage in my area seems very good.
LTE has also done wonders for the data connection at my house. I'm almost always on WiFi at home, but when I've had to fall back to cell network data, it was absolutely awful on HSPA+. On HSPA+, I was getting really slow data speed, 1 Mbps at best, and often a fraction of that, with frequent dropouts just trying to browse webpages. Now on LTE, its rock solid and the speed is excellent (not as good as at my work, but over 15 Mbps).
Everyone's experience is going to be different, depending on location. Some people actually get comparable or even higher speeds on HSPA+, and better battery life. But they are probably not in good reception areas.

Let's not forget building structures, population, and weather. There is a lotbof factors that play a part in reception. I did a speed test on HSDPA plus, and I got 6mb up and 3 down. I haven't done it on LTE yet. But the speed seems faster than my WiFi when I do travel to Nashville.

If I'm not mistaken, HSPA doesn't go that fast. Sounds like you got your test in megabits not megabytes. There's eight megabits in a megabyte.

I was on my phone, and did not feel like going for the "+" logo. As you can see it says "HSPA plus." Also, I have the app set up to show MB, not MiB.

I have LTE turned off and i've noticed i get atleast an hour extra of screen time due to this.
Still am able to stream pandora on my hourly commute.
AT&T LTE is on and off in my area. I think they're testing it.

Alright, I just thought the max HSPA+ could go was 42 Mbps which is just over 5 mBps

Your actual "4G" data speeds

Ok.... So I got the Mytouch 4G, One of the main reasons for this (small reason) was because when I am at work, all I get is EDGE. Now... I still only get EDGE, And my top speeds at home on my 6th floor balcony are 2.2Mb/.8Mb, which are the same as my Fender mytouch 1.2. I am in West palm beach florida which is a 4g market.
Anyone else care to share their speeds? maybe someone around me lol. I just want to see if maybe there is something wrong, or if there really is no difference.
I'm in Indy here and I normally get around 2.5 - 3.5 mbps downstream. I am in an hspa+ area. Non HSPA+ devices will be just as fast as HSPA+ devices while in an hspa+ area except for the fact that non-HSPA has a ceiling of 7.2mbps.
My personal best is 6.1 Mbps but normally 3-4 Mbps on hspa+
Same as these guys 2-3megs. Saw 6.5 right next to a cell tower, but normally I never see that speed.

I think there are a few posts about this. It looks like people are experiencing the same thing I experienced before the Orlando area was proper. Even before my myTouch 4G (prev. CliqXT, eww) I was getting 5 mbps and above. Getting about 8-10 mbps here consistently...

I couldn't be happier with the speeds here in Orlando. Be patient, it wasn't always blazing fast around here.
I see an average of 3mb/s down, 1 up in the notoriously congested San Francisco area. My personal best is 5.11 down, 2.1 up. I only drop down to EDGE in a few of the tunnels under SF/Oakland, otherwise it's 3/4G all the time. Pretty happy. Verizon was good, T-Mob seems comparable so far w/ a bit more speed when on 4G (for about $30/month less on my bill). And don't get me started how many million times better this is than my horrible year with AT&T! Ahhh! Ahhhhhhhhhhh!
I've seen 10 several time here on san antonio. Average 6-7

If there was poor coverage in your area in the first place with 3G/Edge, getting a 4G phone isn't going to make you have better coverage. It simply boosts the speed in the area, not the coverage area itself.. You need to have good coverage to take advantage of good speeds. The remedy to your problem would be if they added a tower closer to your home I think.
my best is 4 - 5 in walnut creek but usually its around 2 - 3.
My personal best is 6+ on speedtest.net, but I average about 2-3.

This is incorrect. You see, even though the phone is "capable" of 7.2, it will NEVER reach that. That is a theoretical speed. You would have to be in absolute perfect conditions to reach those speeds. I don't even want to get into that, but lets just say that simply repositioning yourself around the tower alone can affect your data rates. The HSPA+ phones are more capable of higher speeds so they will overall have better speeds.
If your using a Nexus One (a non plus phone) then you will typically top out at 5Mbps, in fact, I know you willl NEVER get better than that. If your on the MT4G, you will typically top out at 10Mbps.
Lets not forget site load either. Now that we have HSPA+ networks, T-Mobile is selling more and more of their 3G and 4G phones and the networks are getting more loaded down therefore your data rates will not peak at 10Mbps during peak hours. Try your data tests during non peak hours (between 12am-5am) and check your results. My tower is at a Middle School. During the day I average 2.5-4Mbps but right now i hit 6.0-6.9Mbps because all the kiddies are home and most people are not on their phone at 11pm.
Wow.... Thanks for the replies guys. Ive heard the orlando speeds are awesome. Im still topping it out 2.8mbps at a server about 20min from me. We just got 4g in this area not to long ago, so updating of the cell towers I do think is in serious need.
Im also thinking the reason for only getting EDGE in my work, is because its a pretty old building, im sure its still lined with lead paint and asbestos lol... Blocking the signal, When I go out side away from it, it goes back up to H. Should probably speed test it when I get to work tomorrow before I go inside.

Strange that at 1am your still not getting better speeds. Maybe your servicing site hasn't been optimized yet. Or its possible your in a pocket that doesn't work as well (which sucks) but remember I was saying that speeds will be effected at different positions around the tower.
When your talking about download speeds equal to or in excess of cable and dsl EVERYTHING in EVERY way affects the data rates.
I hope the speeds get better for you, but honestly, I don't know what to do with my 7Mbps I have now!

Varies, in the Birmingham area 10 Mbps was the highest down speed I've seen (1 Mbps up seems to be a cap, not sure why), 8 more typical when I got really high speed. At home I had been getting about 0.3 Mbps down, but I just checked it...wait, Y5 turned my wireless back on (I'm dumping it, it is a PITA and a bit buggy), so the 16.2 is from the cable modem (nice). Turning wireless off: 0.85 down, 0.54. Shucks.
I used speedtest.net's flash tester.
Broke my personal best (6.1Mbps) yesterday with a 6.5Mbps and 7.9Mbps on back to back runs.
Varies here in Fort Lauderdale FL. Best was 5 down. But usually 2 to 3 down. Sucks but I came from a unlocked iPhone with only edge speeds on it so I can't complain especially since I'm sure its only due to my area.

WTF is up with that, as usual they act dumb when trying to get help and no call back two weeks after service ticket. We all need to sign up for the class action suit, my t-mobile bill equals a car payment. Shouldn't I be able to use the service? LoL

[Q] AT&T HSPA+ speeds in Boston

DSLReports.com has a new article: AT&T HSPA+ Quietly Pops Up In Several Cities At Least According To A New, More Honest Coverage Map (LINK). Going to the AT&T map and zooming on Boston, shows I should have HSPA+ in the area I'm in, but I don't . Any one in Boston getting AT&T's approximately 6 Mbps speeds? If so, what radio are you using? I am using 12.39.60.19U_26.06.04.06_M with Android Revolution 4G 2.1.
6? That's funny. Granted I'm in Burlington-MA and not downtown proper, but I'm lucky to see 0.6 during the day. At 6:00am I can sometimes see 2mb, but it chokes down pretty quick when people start their workday.

I'm in the same area, speeds are a joke. Without WiFi, it would almost be a paper weight.
Up to 6 is all HSPA+ is supposed to give us? I've already seen over 5 in Atlanta where HSPA+ isn't even turned on yet. Usually I get around 3 though.
I've seen almost 5 here in STL and thats no HSPA+.... also i get about 2 up

hahah i got mine today and i've been around the boston/brighton/alston area all day. only got above 1 Mbps once and everything else was pretty low...
I work in Braintree and average over 3mbps down, but that's what my other phones generally saw between 2-3.
Northborough 3.3 down 1.3 up
In S. Boston I get: .4 Down and .15 up
At home in Salem: 2.5 Down .8 up
Extremely pathetic... if this doesn't change I will be getting the thunderbolt on VZW. Standing in Boston and not even getting Edge speeds... AT&T Sucks!
So I looked at the map and my office is supposedly in the "4g" area(Burlington, ma). I'm showing the "H+" and running the rooted stock ROM. 0.43 down and 0.65 up at 1:45pm. I know the phone is capable of more since I've seen up to 3mb down during off hours. The ~0.5 down is pretty typical during normal working hours though. I'm also thinking about jumping ship before my 30 days is up.
i feel bad for some of you guys, i dont understand it. (i do understand the upload speed is disabled on the stock ROM).
but on ATT, my nexus one gets 3Mbps down, 1.6Mbps up, for the last year straight. even during daytime and peak hours, those speeds are relatively consistent.
ping is consistently 180 ms. cant complain about that. but certainly that's not HSPA+ yet. leave it to ATT to be slow at expanding network...
In Salt Lake City, I average .6 down and .16 up. With my Samsung Captivate, I got faster speeds on 3G. I happen to also own a T-Mobile MyTouch 4G which has average speeds that are almost 2.5 times faster. I test both the Inspire and MyTouch several times daily.
What this tells me that the download speeds as well as the upload speeds are being artificially slowed down.
Also, HTC or AT&T also brilliantly decided to leave out the 2100 Mhz radio so no 3 or 4G in Europe and many other counties. This and the fact there is no front facing camera, make this phone much less desirable.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
For my local and ROM, the throttling isn't artificial but a lack of bandwidth. During off hours I get respectable speeds but the network becomes bogged down once everyone gets to work.
The lack of front facing camera I'm guessing was intentional. Their network is obviously greatly lacking in capacity in many areas. Giving people hardware to allow video calling isn't going to work well with that.
I am also in the Boston area. I got 2M up 2M down yesterday by leaning out my window at home (I only get 1 bar inside my house when I am lucky). I will say this though, I was talking to an ATT rep in a local store and he said that the towers had been updated but much of the backhaul was still in progress around Boston. He was talking about the Worburn towner specifically being a 4G tower but that the backhaul still meant he only got about .6M.

Bad Data Transfer Rates in Bldg.

I work in a downtown Dallas office building and am running radio 12.39a.60.19u_26.06.06.30_M on AOSPX ICS rom. My signal strength is at -89 dBm 12 asu, yet I have a difficult time getting a consistent transfer rate from my phone while at my desk. The data package also switches between "3G" and "H" occasionally. My battery life is okay, but Speedtest.net is reporting a download speed of anywhere between 512 and 781 kbps and upload speed of 739 and 1038 kbps. It's very inconsistent and sporadic.

Bad signal, interference, los to tower issues, a lot of people on same tower during peak usage. Pick your poison.
How does it perform outside the building? If it performs properly then it's just any or all of the mentioned causes. If it's still bad, then we can work on that. I personally get no signal for the 9hrs im inside my building at work, walk outside, 3g with full bars lol.
There are little tweaks you can do, keep phone in upright position (creates antenna alignment'ish to the tower), you can remove the case as well, (each layer the signal has to go through reduces it's strength)
I figured as much
And it does seem to work fine outside of the bldg. The only problem is that most of my coworkers' devices work fine in the bldg. They are on different networks. I'm on AT&T.

You are comparing apples and oranges. My company has a repeater installed in it for verizon, so all the verizon people get perfect signal. Something similar may be at your place. either way, i dont see a problem that can be fixed on your end, other than switching networks :/

In hotel, 3g signal fine, 4g signal weak or none

On Synergy 1.7 and imoseyon kernel 0.1.
I play poker for a living in Atlantic City so I spend a lot of time in a hotel room on high floors. Signal is either medium, low or very low depending on the room. I notice a lot that if I make the phone 3g I get 2 to 4 bars, and internet works. When I turn on LTE, signal drops suddenly to 0 or 1 bar, and internet is slower than 3g. A lot of the time it will auto switch to 3g. Anything I can do, and are there any legit apps or hardware to boost signal?

Yeah pay for wifi, you are in a hotel lol. Most likely the hotel (if a big one on the strip) has a signal amplifier for 3G. LTE is probably too new for them to have one installed yet. That's your difference.

$12 to $15 isnt worth speeds slower than 4g. Hell if 3g can do better than 384k speeds then the wifi is slower than 3g. Really wish legit signal boosters exist.

Might just be in a rough area for 4G or because your inside the signal is weaker. Same thing happens to me at work, as soon as i walk inside the signal drops a lot

Wild fluctuation in signal On MAXX

I got the Droid MAXX yesterday and the phone is amazing except that I notice the signal strength varies wildly depending on how its held and other factors. In one location half a block from the tower I'd have -57db 1x strength and 5 bars and if moved 5 feet it would show -79 db 1x and 3 bars. The same thing happened in the middle of an open parking lot. I'm wondering if I got a bad phone or if Verizon phones always fluctuate 10-20 db when moved. I've dropped no calls or had any data dropouts but such fluctuations concern me. By the way at -57 db speed test results were 45-55 MBps, at -79 db they were roughly 15-20 MBps.
Edit: when comparing to a Galaxy s4, the maxx does maintain better rf though it fluctuates a lot more. Perhaps the maxx refreshes signal reading faster than the GS4?
