Does anybody use wireless charging - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have never tried it. Is it worth paying 20-40 bucks for a pad? How fast is it?

bought a Nokia DT-601. was that impressed have since bought another.
Its not going to change your life but it saves fiddling with connectors every time. charging time is quick (even from just a USB feed) and it gets warm, but not hot !
if you have the cash to spare then give it a go Ive wasted similar amounts on numberous replacement cables along the way to be honest.

I use it all the time. Sure beats messing around with USB cables. Its not as fast as plugging it in, but its worth it

I love wireless charging. It's just no hassle, and since I'm kind off paranoid of breaking the micro USB port on my N5 because it's really tight, it works. It's not as fast as the plug in charger that came with the phone due to the inherent inefficiencies or wireless charging, but it's still pretty quick. Depending on how low your battery is when you start charging, it would probably take 30-60min longer. But, I'm never really in a rush, and always keep my battery topped off, so I'm never in dire need for a super fast charge.
A word of caution though: STAY AWAY FROM THE TYLT VU. It has a serious issue with sporadically overheating your device. Check out these threads:

Do it! Worth every penny! It’s elegant and I always have plenty of battery life when I’m on the go because of it! OH, AND THE IPHONE CAN’T DO THIS!

I don't think I ever even opened the USB cable that came with it. I use a Nokia DT900 and it works great.

just noticed the thread in general. did a reading and decided to buy the nexus 4 official wireless charger. For me its the fact that I do go through a lot of extra cables in a year and it would be nice to preserve the port. But most importantly. Smoke em if you got em.

I use a wireless pad on the bedside table. Just drop my phone on it at night. Works a treat. Thinking about getting another one for my desk at work.

I use it at work. Love it.

Good choice. I returned my two Tylt Vu chargers for an N4 Orb charger I use at home. It's build quality is solid. I also use a Nokia DT-900 at work that works flawlessly as well.

Yeah I got the 910. I read regularly here about people having overcharging issues on non official chargers. The Nokias were consistantly reported as good though

I mainly use the google official one and let me tell you- wireless charging is so worth it. Of course if you took a stopwatch and figured out how much time it saved as opposed to plugging it in, you wouldn't be saving much time- but there's something subconsciously... awesome about it. Plus with the quick charge 2.0 or whatever its called that our phone has- epic charging speeds. Worth every penny imo. I'm considering getting a few portable QI chargers as well to replace micro usb power banks.

Yup. Sod it's benefits... Its just seriously cool every time you do it

Think I got enough MicroUSB cables?

I was running around my house the other day trying to find an extra microUSB cable, when I decided I should just order a couple extra (from www.monoprice.com) to keep around the house...I ended up getting:
2x1.5ft
2x3ft
2x6ft
1x10ft
...all for $9.60 shipped! They seem like high quality cables, and definitely cost a lot less than any brick-and-mortar store!
If you haven't ordered from MonoPrice before, I highly recommend them.

The power outlet next to my bed is a couple feet away, so now I can use my phone normally (i.e. not leaning towards the side of the bed) while it's charging. It also came in handy during a road trip last weekend; I was using my phone in the back seat while it was plugged into the charger in the center console.

Agree with this. I just bought a 6 foot charger for 6 bucks off of amazon. I wish I read this thread, I wanted to grab a really long charger for bedside charging. Data transfer speeds might be slow with that, but for charging. It should be working great!
Thanks

Onite Battery Review

First off I would like to give a big thanks to James for allowing me to be a beta tester for his batteries, and accessories. Received this stock replacement with Nfc, about 5-6 days ago and have been using it since,.. great battery! And if your looking for something to replace your factory battery or just a spare, you can't beat it,..especially for what they sell for! I consider myself a pretty heavy phone user, of course don't go crazy and put the brightness all the way up or anything, but texting, phone calls, YouTube, Netflix, web browsing, I do a very good bit of it. I'll get right down to it and post my battery screen shots with the Onite,.. More reviews coming soon including an Onite extended with Nfc. Thanks again James,..this is a great battery guys! Btw phone is unrooted, completely stock

i would totally agree with the OP on this. i recieved one too for my s4 and must say if not more i am getting the same amount of time from this battery that i would get from the stock battery. would recommend anyone in the market who carries spare batteries like me.

But I don't think it is related with the wireless charging.
Maybe you need a Wireless Charger Receiver Pad if you lay it on a charging back.

You can get the wireless charger pad on ebay or amazon.
NFC is not wireless charger pad.
OP, do you need a separate charger for the nfc onite battery or can I charge it while its in my phone? I've had past experiences with aftermarket batteries only being able to be charged with that company's charger and was disappointed when that battery was drained.

Wireless Charging For Your S 4

I'm curious if anyone has purchased any kind of wireless charging unit for their Galaxy S 4. I think they are a neat idea but haven't tried one yet.
If so, can you recommend the brand you prefer and perhaps a link to it?
I'm curious to know if it charges at a manageable rate and is it efficient?
I have considered coughing up some good money on a couple of them if they work but don't want to go in blindly and haven't seen many reviews on them.

They are slow chargers.
I've read something about it here.
There are options out there. A lot cheaper.

Charges at a rate about 1/3 the rate of the 2A charger (650mA). But it charges over night no problem. It's more economical to buy the insert and then buy a charging pad. Inserts usually run ~$20, with chargers running $30ish.

Yeah, that's the kind of info i'm looking for. I am interested in this because when I'm at work [I work for long periods of time] I'd like this to keep it charged. I often will pick my phone up to answer a text, or shoot an email or small things like check the weather quickly, or change my song on Spotify and then i'd like to set it back down to continue to charge.
I won't be using it for a regular charger, per se.
I'll just have to look into buying the insert and pad, seemingly cheaper than the options I was recommended previously.
I thought about this too, but read that they can heat up the phones charging this way and sometimes won't stop charging when full?
yes i have a insert receiver i paid £8 plus £17 for base on flea bay and it works perfectly ,i leave it on over night it charges 100% ,no heat or beeps.i am looking for a pad for my car now.
Some base stations aren't as good as others and will cause the device to heat up. Technically, they all cause the device to heat up but so does plugging it in.
I have three different base stations. The Samsung base, one from ebay(has a qi logo on it) and one from aliexpress(just has a wifi logo on it, and claims 1000 or 1500 output). The ebay one works very well, but makes an annoying loud beep when the phone is placed on it. The aliexpress base works allright but does cause the phone to heat up more than the other base stations.
The samsung base works fine, no annoying beep. But...it didn't come with a power cable so you have to use the cable that came with your phone to plug it up (in fact, it recommends a 2A charger for it). The other two both came with their own power cables.
I've not done tests to see what rates each of the base stations charge at but there's no noticeable difference.
Unfortunately, none of the wireless charging items I purchased have links to them anymore and I can't find comparable items. I wish I could just provide you with the companies I used that gave me the best results, but I just can't track them down.

If you are willing to do a little tweaking with the ebay one, you can rip off the top cover and cut off the speaker that makes the beep. I did that with mine and it stopped the beeping.
Is there not a kernel to increase the charging current on the wireless pads? There was for note 2 (neak kernel)?
I know that everyone is writing Powermat off as a failure but I just got an aftermarket insert for the S4 from a seller on Amazon - the reason why I chose Powermat is because I can use it in Starbucks and McDonald's - no real point in having wireless charging at home anyway. Can't do links but I guess if you search for 'pma thin receiver galaxy s4' you'll find it.
Sorry to bump such an old-ish thread, but I just got a QI patch for my S4, had it on my S3 and loved it. Works great and no issues whatsoever. Gets a tad bit hot but that's pretty much it. It charges at a decent rate.
I just picked up an S4 a few days ago that came with the wireless charging back. I am using a fatboy charging pillow that has the Nokia DT-900 plate in it that I got last year with my DNA. I've used several of the charging plates and they all work well and charge around 1A. What inserts is everyone talking about? What I have is the replacement back cover that includes the qi coil. It's slightly thicker and my issue has been finding a case that fits well over it. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I had been using the Nokia wireless transmitter before with my Note2. Just went on Amazon and ordered a $13 receiver and a UAG case. All works perfectly. Slight bulge on the battery cover but not noticeable with the UAG case on it. There is a slight weight difference but you have to expect that because the receiver is a copper coil.
Charging is slower than USB but perfect for night time recharging. =)

I guess you're talking about the official Samsung Qi transmitter. My experience with the LG WCP-300 is similar. I tested the S4 with the official Samsung receiver back and got 640mA current input with 4 different power supplies (2.1, 1.8, 1.2, & 1 amp).

I just noticed you didn't get an answer yet. The inserts are three Qi receivers that look like thin patches of plastic with very thin copper wires in them. There are many on eBay & Amazon, but really they all look much the same. Prices seem to run from around $12 to just under $30. Some are known to interfere with the NFC function. All seem to create a slight bulge when you place them against the battery contacts and put the back cover on. Some listings give the thickness in millimeters.
Typical:
http://www.amazon.com/GMYLE-Standar...id=1378662447&sr=8-15&keywords=s4+qi+receiver
I don't know about real cases, but I got a bumper for $6.50 that I like:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BWZJOB8/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The only apparent flaw is that the charging back cover is barely recessed into the bumper. No scratches yet, but I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Looking at the teardown there doesn't seem to be any way to have something in body:
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Samsung+Galaxy+Note+10.1+Teardown/10144/1
And I haven't heard of any case that would incorporate the functionality. I'll be watching this thread though, just in case someone has seen or heard of something. It would be interesting

Mine just arrived and it seems to charge when the Note is OFF but I get the red cross on the battery if the Note is ON. That said I have to wait till the battery runs down a bit to see if it will really charge as it is currently 96%. I'm wondering if the resistor/shorting trick would work....

Red cross does not mean that Note is not charging. I have the same cross when charging my Note from USB hub. It will just take more time to chagre it.

OK - I'll run it down and see how it goes then report back

That's good to hear, thanks for posting. It might work then. I didn't try it with the tablet off, just with my Note 8 and GNex and assumed the red cross means it's detected but not charging. Depending on how slow the charging is, it might still be usable then.

Thanks

How many mA is your qi charger, and how many mA is your receiver on the phone? I know I shopped around for a 1A receiver for my S4, and it made a big difference in charge time. I am guessing, since the Note8 came with a 2A charger, it will need more of a draw to sustain power while it is on. I wonder if a 1A QI charger and a 1A receiver would still show a red X. I don't think the QI standard allows anything over 1A draw yet.
Any updates?
I understand it correct that it works, but very slow? This would be okey for me as it will be placed on the qi charger over night.
Please check in settings -> status if the charging mode is "AC" or "USB"!

Screen acting weird when charging

It like its lagging with typing. Skips around and kind of has a mind of its own. Only when charging...I don't recall having this issue with my last phone.. This is my new RMA. Franco and cat.

From my understanding you're using a custom ROM and kernel (" Franco and cat"). Did you mess with the CPU speed or something? It could be a bad flash. This question probably would be better suited in the " Franco or Cat" post. Maybe someone else had the same issue and they found a workaround.

Don't know of this will be relevant but I've had this problem on other phones. It turned out to be cheap chargers and cables. My desire HD did it, problem went away when using the OEM charger.
Hope this helps.

Sometimes thermal throttling can make the device lag whilst charging. I've seen this here a few times

I've seen this happen on a Nexus 4 when the AC charger couldn't provide enough amps. Check the usb and wall adapter.

Me too used to have that problem with my nexus 4 and a samsung 2.0 amp charger , it is supposed to be the original, anyway , the problem fade away once i start using the OEM charger shipped with the nexus 4 1.2 amp
Just and FYI on this.
Chargers are supposed to be polarity free for the wall outlet and this is why they have two skinny plugs and not one skinny and one fat.
Flip the charger around. I have seen this on several phones and in several forums that once you flip the charger around on the wall outlet it works fine.
Cheap chips inside can be affected by the AC current and some manufactures screwed up on their diode placement so power was only applied for half a second lol. So your phone fips out thinking that it is charging then not charging. gotta love technology.
This is not always the case as some people had faulty chargers period but this issue has been reported and found to be, most of the time, a polarity issue with the wall outlet.
Last but no least a bad power source can really screw with you. Whether its the wall or a bad charger or dirty power can really screw with sensitive equipment. Pretty much goes with what red dragon was saying.
