I have the same model as yours..... Go to settings -> the very last tab (phone settings) => system updates => refresh......... w8 and a pop up will appear accept and you will be on 4.1.1 after a short 144mb download!
PS: I would recommend you to stay at ICS because 4.1.1 does not posses many features however it will eat ur ram like hell on average u would have 70-100mb free....... and games will lag a lot!

It looks like you're using a custom ROM so the update option isn't showing up. You must be on stock ICS to take the OTA update to JB.

You are on AOKP ROM and not custom ROM.
You can install Stock OS using factory images
OR
Install custom ROMs like CyanogenMod, AOKP or SlimBean (Personal favorite).
You'll find the tutorials in the development thread.

Even official android has some bugs. The closest to bug-free JB rom I used was Strawberry ROM coupled with matr1x kernel.

There is no Custom ROM without any bugs. Even stock ROMs will have some bugs.
The reliable custom ROMs are CyanogenMod, AOKP, SlimBean etc etc
You can choose any of them and I'm sure you'll not be disappointed.

So far this is the most stable rom i found for nexus s the latest release of AOSP JellyBean 4.1.2
But if you want something more up to date wait for the next release of AOSP KitKat it will be a great daily driver

If you already have a custom rom on your device you already have a custom recovery on it
First step update it via rom manager from playstore or manually flash the latest one from here
Then go to recovery and
-Wipe Data Factory Reset
-Wipe Cash
-Advance Settings>Wipe dalvik cash
Then Install from recovery rom and gapps
-Reboot and then install Superuser for root
And final only if you need i added a filemanager in attachment that you can flash from recovery because the rom don't has one or you could download one from play store

A kernel is the core of android but for more information just google it
To install just flash it like you flashed the rom and whipe cashe and dalvik
You will notice a better performance and also a better headphone sound thanks to voodoo sound mod(a kernel audio driver)

Nope did not loose my custom recovery. Its very clean and appears to be stable.
P.S. I flashed all 3 with TWRP in order
1) ROM
2) GAPPS
3) SU
After a full wipe of course...
My Nexus 7 isn't here yet, but this is incredible. I'm coming from a Droid Charge and HTC Rezound-- I won't even know what to do, its almost confusing to have choice.
You beat me to the punch I just compiled 4.1.1 r3 late yesterday. Thank you from a fellow purist.

Great job man,downloading now .
I'm confused, how is this any different from the official 4.1.1 OTA update? What does Google add or change from source other than the Google Apps?

AOSP roms if they are the latest build include the newest fixes and updates straight from Google. Also true AOSP roms do not include gapps. Gapps are not open source like Android. That's why they are flashed separately

Lucky people with the device. I'm still waiting on mine to ship. 16gb version.
how is this rom running? really smooth and fast? im planning to flash this tomorrow..sounds very appealing to me. pure aosp should mean fast.
Running great for me.

This is a pure AOSP Rom, and I'm gonna keep it as such unfortunately. However if you wanna rip this Rom apart and edit the nav bar to whatever specs you desire go right ahead, that's why I uploaded this so we can have a stock base Rom to do with as we please.
So given that this aosp does the op know what main differences are between it and the jb that comes with the n7?

no man. It same JB but with NO CRAP !!
Faster as hell :highfive:
Well, I didn't try to download the rom, since I can build this just fine at home (and do).
But I did try and grab your gapps, since I was having a hard time finding a gapps package that mirrored my original factory gapps.
But I figured I would let you know your dropbox has been suspended for large activity. Maybe you know, but since it isn't in the OP...
Edit: And if you are selecting option 4 in lunch (userdebug) then root access is included. Are you building 'user'?
Edit2: Looked at the fixed link. eng has root too. So they're gonna be rooted, whether the flash the su or not. Although most builds just go for the userdebug. eng just adds more logging services, FAIK.

Gapps & Kernel are preinstalled and working perfectly. I recommend installing CM10 if you want a perfectly running daily driver.
After that you could do a NANDROID backup and try 10.1 or some others to find "your thing" .

Gapps definitely NOT included on both ROMs. You have to flash it separately after flashing the ROM.
Gapps are not included due to some IP issues, it's a separate file.
I'd go with stable unless you are comfortable solving problems on the go.

Noobing.....how install jbx kernel

Hey guys although I am not new to xda developers , I have certain doubt's regarding installing jbx kernel , I read the post by d trail and its little above the levels for an amateur . so p.s. help me in giving a guidance to install the kernel. I am using pacman 4.3 in sys1 and mokee 4.4.2 on sys3, he battery drain is too much in mokee gets down by 10% every hour so I want to try the kernel for power optimization....
Ahh... installing JBX kernel, this is an awesome procedure, thanks to AROMA installer, trust me, haha
Commonly we just use BMM to install the JBX.zip like installing a ROM.zip
But there're some exceptions.. for example: we can not flash JBX on non-kexec ROMs because of ICS kernel...
I think guide allready have on the jbx kernel thread

i think you have already installed BMM.
then take mokee 4.4.2 for example,
1. download the latest version of dtrail's kernal, or Shurikkb's (because it is verified that his kernal have better battery life, you can find in dtrail's post)
2. flash it like a ROM, (boot to BMM recovery, switch to system3, then install package from ..., no wipe, no clean)
3. then enjoy, for details, please read in the post

Issues with JBX 3.0
Hello,
I have another question regarding JBX. I am running the latest version of Gummy (M.1-02-19-14), which comes with JBX kernel already integrated. I have read good things about the latest version of JBX (02/27/14 build) and have been trying to install it over the old kernel. The times I manage to load the rom with the new kernel, I have no signal and the phone appears to be unable to recognize my sim card. I have tried unchecking the exposed framework and 10% battery fix in the installer without avail. Any help with installing this latest version of JBX would be greatly appreciated!
Hi, I'm relatively new here, I have many doubts about the JBX kernel. I do not understand the Aroma installer. Is there any option to dial in specific?
I have experienced some problems. Some sensors stopped working.

Which 5.1 custom ROM is best

Hi folks
I am using ressurection remix v5.4 android 5.1 based custom ROM on my N5 for a couple of days and facing some bugs which are
1. When I change app drawer animation sometimes app icons don't show on the whole page.
2. When screen rotate sometimes notification keys don't appears.
3. Facebook messenger doesn't popup. I can't use when I am using another app.
4. Most of the time when I restart the phone, 'android is optimizing the apps xx of xx' appears.
And some other bugs those I can't remember right now.
So I decided to change the ROM but confused which one to choose.
My need is a stable custom ROM with some beneficial changes and most importantly with no bugs.
I really need your help folks.
Thanks

Cataclysm rom uses stock kernel, you have to download ElemetalX separately. First flash rom and than flash kernel, but you don't have to wipe anyting before kernel flashing.

Thanx dimi3ye....last night I flashed the cm12 nightly caz I downloaded it before and installed the elementalx 2.10 stock/aosp version. Very much satisfied with the kernel as its giving me pretty good standby battery life though I m using the dt2w option and most importantly impressed with the sound gain option.
But still worried about custom ROM because cm12 launcher still has some bugs. So I need to know about cataclysm ROM what are the best picks of the ROM and the stability.

Your curent kernel will be reflashed with kernel that comes with Cataclysm... Read first page on Cataclysm tread for flashing instructions, because latest version is sometimes just update (~ 30mb), and first you have to flash major, big version (~ 550mb) before that update...

2.8.5.2 is fine... stable release means that every feature works perfect, beta is also rockstable rom, but new added features might have small issues (usually everything works perfect). I always flash latest whether is stable or beta, never had issues.

Boost speed on Moto G 2015 (8GB)

I got my Moto G mid-October 2015 but I opted for the version with 1GB RAM because of budget constraints. At first it performed pretty well even while doing a bit of multitasking, but now I'm just having problems; excessive lag during the animations and loading apps, slow multitasking, apps closing frequently in the background, battery drain and etc. How do I rectify this? I have tried limiting the number of apps allowed to be on in the background, using Greenify, factory resetting and even installing custom ROMs.
This is kinda putting a damper on things for me. Any help would be appreciated ;3
i'm actually amazed with the performance i can pull out of my device.. try a lightweight rom with flashhhh's kernel
Or try to flash the original Stock Firmware again via Fasboot.
Another thing what i have seen at my Sons Mobile is the SD-Card was slowing down the hole Mobile.
Just put for testing your Sd-Card out and try again. If its so, the just save your Data of your SD-Card, format it and put it back to your Mobile.
Hi... Same problem here... And i've tested the sdcard and the results were about 33 mb/sec for reads and 16mb/sec for writes... any rom to recommend? Maybe CM 13.1 ? I've tried CM 12.1 but it does the same... slow like hell even some times it completely freezes....Also with every restart it starts optimizing just one app... all the time... with stock 5.1.1 , with stock 6.0, with cm 12.1..... any help or advice?
PS: I just use (and need) facebook, fb messenger, fb pages and whatsapp.
Thanks in advance!
I'm using a Sandisk Ultra 32gb card since I started soak testing MM when it first came out and have every app that will go to it moved. I've never had a freeze or any slowdown. The only problem I've ever had is sometimes on a reboot the moved apps are greyed out until I restart Nova launcher. That seems to happen only with the beta Nova I'm running so it may be Nova.
Sent from my SM-T530NU using XDA-Developers mobile app
I'm on MM too... I'm trying using Nova right now... will see...
Mine is 16gb but started to have similar issues (slow loads, some freezes). The solution was to stock rom & kernel and added my SD Card as internal storage (I can't explain why did it help either).

Which one? v1.0 or 1.0a? And how did you do to stop the update service? It never stops asking for upgrade to MM... Or if I do the upgrade, it will replace the modified/optimized kernel, right?

Mine is XT1543, using MM 6.0 (24.44.1). And no, the official auto-upgrade will not replace your kernel, you must flash the stock first or the MM Stock directly.

Great, thanks, so v1.0 or 1.0a (or others of the link you posted) are stock roms, but with modified kernels? Great...thanks again

They are the stock of the stock (rom + kernel + user data + everything you modified except the unlocked status)
Don't forget to backup all your data

OTA will work if you are using official (from Motorola) releases.
Just flash the stock rom (some versions already has Android 6.0 available).

Sorry... I dont get it... I flash the zip v1.0a (android 5.1.1) and then....? look for official 5.1.1 and flash it using fastboot? that would overwrite the first optimized one...

I do not use custom rom/kernel, I do use stock rom/kernel only (I did used custom kernel in the past, but my phone got slower)
Flash the stock rom to remove any customizations and get your device clean again.
when you said :

I understood that you refer to the v1.0a , the .zip file in that link in "stock rom & kernel"..... Do you have the download link to the rom you are using?? Thanks
