[Q] Is it Android or HTC? - General Questions and Answers

Purchased the HTC One after the usb connection on my HD2 eventually gave out and it appears that was a BIG mistake.
I need a business phone that works well and syncs with Thunderbird, or if not Thunderbird I could go back to Outlook.
Cannot stand this horrible HTC One, nothing works well, most apps fall over, Google has it's scalpware fixed into everything, is it the phone or is it Android?
Should I go back to Windows?
Should I go for a second hand HD2?
I would prefer to sell the HTC and buy a new phone so any advice or recommendations would be most welcome.
Regards

i think its more of an application issue rather than Android.
With what apps do you have problems?

Hi Larsjuh1987
Mainly problems on business oriented apps like Leica Sketch and Car Dock apps.
With the car docks the main problem appears to be with the voice search, but it's to be expected because voice search has to go through google so they can scalp information. Fine in a country with adequate cellular coverage but I am in UK and the system can only be described as "third rate".
The app developers recommend getting around this by running the voice search on the phone, like my old HD2 and even older iPaq, but it's not available on this phone.
I am thinking a Windows 8 phone may sort this out but I have no idea if it has the ability to voice search offline.
This again is where apple score although it's not a good business phone.
I get the impression from developers that Android works on most phones, it's just the HTC One thats not very good.
Treated myself to the Plantronics Voyager Legend headset, fine on my old HD2 and my colleagues Galaxy but not on HTC One, so I am having to use an old Plantronics 510!
I wish I was more confident to load a ROM from XDA and get around the problem that way.
Thanks for your reply.

4" phones with Keyboards?

Hey guys
although I think my HD2 is simply fantastic, i need a physical keyboard. I've had the HD2 for 6 months (?) now and I simply cannot type at the speeds I used to be able to on my old Tosh G900.
So, I want a high spec (like the Droid X), large 4"+ screen phone with a slide out keyboard. Apart from the Tosh KG02 (I think thats the model name) which appears to only be available in Asia, are there any out there or on the near horizon?
(Android or WinMob but would prefer WinMob)
Thanks loads!!!!!
+1 to know about your question!
Samsung EPIC 4G for Sprint.
wait for the HTC Vision
i was looking for that too but couldnt find one got the desire, the other things you gotta want are nvidia tegra chipset and a pixel qi screen that would be my ultimate
Sad day ....
sadly, very sadly, Android still doesn't support Exchange properly. These phones look great but as I've found out, WM is still the only way of supporting (for me VITAL) Exchange....
Can you tell me what part of Exchange support is not working in Android?
I've been using 2 Exchange servers in Android 2.1 and now 2.2 on my TP2 without any problems. In fact, I never managed to use 2 Exchange servers in WinMo and ActiveSync always stopped synching after a bit.
But maybe it's just me not using any fancy Exchange features
I sync e-mail, contacts and calendar from both accounts in Android.
tasks don't sync.
I've still also had no confirmation that the "Notes" section of a contact sync or the photo's I have associated with people.
Link to Talk Android thread
Also, I am looking for a MS OneNote alternative, one that allows me to make detailed notes on the PC or phone and have them sync both ways.

[Q] TP2 => . . . . . (advise please)

Hi all,
I am using my Touch Pro 2 for more then a Year now and I come to the conclusion that I am sick of upgrading while not using the phone for more then the basics anyway.
-I use my phone as phone, for synchronizig with our exchange server, browsing (but seldom), alarm (SPB Time) and watching the daily traffic queues around Moscow.
-Internet Sharing is not used often but MUST be working in case of need
-Gimmicks like SPB Weather, SPB Backup, SPB Wifi Monitor, Games, Resco Explorer, Resco Picture Viewer etc. are nice, but not often used.
What is the next phone I should be going to :
-Android's HTC Desire HD
-WM7's HTC HD7
-Android's HTC Desire Z (to keep the keyboard)
I'd like speed, but stability (never loose a call anymore) is more important for me. I am willing to part with the gimmicks and hoping to part with flashing to cooked rom's.
Any input to help me choose the right direction is highly appreciated.
Ruud
Desire HD or HD7 on your choice since one is windows and other Android
Hi Diamond dawg,
thanks. I know the big difference. I also know that none of these two is WM6.5. As said I'd like to go for a phone who does the basics and does them well, not minding having less functionality then I have now.
Any plus or minusses on any of them ?
Regards,
Ruud
If you are coming form a large tradition of real keyboard devices you may find not so comfortable the virtual kb´s, I find it hard to get used to my Leo even after 6 months with it and still miss a kb!!
Said that if you don´t mind to have Android only, your best shot by now will be Desire Z or wait a bit for the Touch Pro 7.
Hi orb3000,
as You correctly saw on my signature, I have some experience with real keyboard devices after I had some iPaq's with only on screen keyboard. So yes, I have a hard time deciding going the on screen keyboard way. Some of my colleagues are using iPhone and claim that they have no problem, but I am not sure.
I am writing a lot of mails per day, not so many sms's, but still each mail is text.
And I am still unsure if all that I need from a phone will be delivered by Android. Sync seems to be possible, but sync through GPRS or 3G will have to be purchased. Same for office file editing.
Guess I still have to do some more research.
Thanks again,
Ruud
No prob mate, please let us know what you finally decided

Go for windows then, as Windows is more business orientated, BTW dont wait on the touch pro7, reason being its CDMA not GSM
According to gsmarena both models will arrive: GSM and CDMA

My little research is telling me that all these WM7 phones do not have a card-slot. I strongly dislike that idea. I am using the cardslot atm for creating backups (yeah I know, WM6.5) so if the phone would break I am able to do a restore.
I have no experience with Android, do not know if it has a backup function at all (bu guess so), but I would surely not go for a phone where I won't be able to do a backup, not even in the future.
So WM7 is off for now.
Leaving the DHD and the DZ in the race.
DZ is thicker, but has a keyboard, a little slower and I do not like what I read about the keyboard.
DHD is probably more to my taste concerning form. I am told that living without a keyboard is possible. Choice, choice, aaah....
By the way, i am not seeing any stylus on these phones anymore, also no mentioning about a reset "whole", are these not available anymore ?

Okay, the first thing you need to understand about WP7 is that it is not 6.5, and you need to stop thinking like a 6.5 user when you consider WP7.
WP7 is built around syncing data to your associated windows live account and to your PC through the zune client. It does all of this silently, like a ninja, with basically no effort past initial setup. I've got mine set up to sync everything automatically over wifi, which it does all by itself when I plug it in to charge right before I go to bed.
Further, for things like pictures, you don't even have to wait until you get home. It has the option from within the camera to send pictures straight to the free 25 gig skydrive that comes with your windows live account.
Have you seen those "To the Cloud!" commercials? Been wondering what that was all about? This is it.
Backups are *not* a concern.
Of course, that doesn't change that you can't use a WP7 device as a storage drive. That does suck, and is something that I miss about 6.5. Honestly, going through all of the crap that I had on my storage card from my Tilt2, anything that wouldn't sync through zune was a massive conglomeration of backup and hacking files for the phone, which I no longer need at all. However, just having the option to use it as portable mass storage was nice, in theory.

If i had the money i would have gone for the DHD, Z is not that great, i would stick to a touch pro2 then get that. also Touch pro2 has a resistive touch screen which means you need a stylus, Android and WP7 have capacitive meaning you can use your finger

I am tempted to the DHD as well. I do not hear that great info about the DZ keyboard. I am thinking "bigger screen, better for my eyes", "bigger screen means bigger keyboard", "thinner".
Thanks for the info about the stylus !!

Took a DHD yesterday, VERY nice. No problems except the 'me not knowing Andriod', but that is something I hope to cope with in time.
Very nice device.

Nice device indeed, shame no keyboard on it

why sometimes OLD is better than NEW

Hi everybody.
this is my first post here, I hope the place is right for this post.
my problem: I want to replace my OLD smartphone TREO PRO WM6.1 with a new one, but I cannot find a model / OS that can do the same things as good as my current phone. So I may end up keweping the current one, until something better (for me) comes out.
I use my TREO PRO WM6.1 essentially for:
1) keeping my calendar events and contacts always up-to-date on my smartphone,
my office PC and my home PC.
2) make phone calls (also using kar bluetooth kit) and send messages (SMS)
3) keep a number of documents (files) always sincronized on my SD, my office PC and my home PC
4) read and edit Office files, even pasword protected ones on the smartphone when not at home or in the office.
5) off line navigation with TomTom (often abroad, cannot afford to use roaming
6) some browsing and e-mail (not push) by WIFI only
7) sometimes listening to some MP3 music
All the solutions now on the market have very good points but none fits 100% to my needs.
iPhone4: I would need to cut or change the SIM, to make it "MINI", and I cannot, as it it a company SIM and I am not allowed to do this.
Android: from what I have found on XDA, it does not sync very well with outlook via USB (I cannot use google, as my company does not allow to send data to the "clouds" for security reasons) and it's calendar app does not store (or show) events happening 45 days further than today. My calendar is full of recurring and events planned long before. Also, no TomTom for Android (at least as of now, although there are rumours about it coming...)
WinPhone7: it is even more "cloud" dependent than Android, and it looks like TomTom will never be there for it.
Blackberry: as I do not use push mail and do not want to be always connected (often abroad), I do not think this platform is the right one for me.
Has anybody any suggestion for what could be my best option, instead of keeping my Treo Pro with WM6.1 ? I confess, I have not looked at the Nokia world......
Thanks for helping me by sharing your ideas and opinions on the subject.
Well android phones are good all-arounders, but by they way you put it i'd recommend a blackberry: it's good for syncing data and has pretty much all of the basic things you're asking.
I actually can't see what you mean when you say you can't get one because you "don't wanna be always connected": actually there isn't a single phone out there forcing you to connect to whatever if you don't want to, and bb is no exception, so you don't have to worry. Tomtom isn't available for blackberries, but there's a lot of other programs which are on par with it: garmin mobile, wayfinder, and even nav4all which is free. Also, coming from a treo i guess bb form factor should appeal you too...i suggest you to wait for the new bold 9900 (hopefully out in a couple months), which is a nice phone imho. After a year and a half with a full touch screen android i really miss that awesome bb keyboard, and i'm actually looking forward to get one as soon as it comes out.
Ofc the geeks and fanboys here will go like "aw noez, dun get ztupid rim phones, they are outdated and suxxor lalalal, get android!!1", but to be honest this one seems to a much better option for an user with your needs. Just my 2 cents...
thanks, anzi grazie.
well, the problem of the BB is that it is very similar to my Treo pro, almost identical for size, keyboard and functionality (remember, I do not use push mail), and it will not run TomTom..... so why change the Pro with a BB ?
My idea is to change the Pro in order to have a larger screen, that can work landscape also.... OK, there is one BB model with a big screen, but if I do not use push mail, is it really worth taking a BB ? Maybe i am biased here, thinking that BB without using push mail is a waste of money.....I will give BB a better look anyway.
If the ONLY reason you don't want an iPhone 4 is because you have to cut the SIM, then you can always get the 3GS. It will be able to run even iOS 5 and you don't have to cut the SIM. Obviously, it's slower than the iPhone 4, but it does have a Cortex A8 based CPU so even at 600MHz, it's pretty decent. Other than slower CPU, other differences over the iPhone 4 is it has a lower resolution screen, 3.2MP camera, and no flash. The low res screen makes the 3GS look dated, but it's the same size as the iPhone 4 and displays the exact same thing so no information lost, it just doesn't look as sharp.
Have you researched HTC's proprietary Outlook sync for Android? I'm not sure if it's better than what you've read about, but I know HTC does have its own. You should be able to use it if you buy an HTC Android phone. If that doesn't work for you, could you do an Exchange Server sync? If you use Outlook because your company uses Exchange Server, then Android can sync to it directly. For me, it works well in both HTC and stock Android flavors. They've quoted Corinne Vigreux, the managing director of TomTom, as saying TomTom for Android will be "released soon", so I think it's definitely coming. It would be silly not to make it available for the #1 most popular smartphone platform.
WP7 - No, earlier this year TomTom said they won't be making a WP7 version. WP7 is a nice OS, but it just has too few users right now.
Can't comment on BB, never had a modern one.
Nokia - well, Symbian is on the way out as Nokia will be switching to WP7. I don't see the point of going to a dying OS.
So, I think either iPhone 3GS or Android. Definitely Android if you want something more modern. The iPhone 3GS with its low res screen especially, feels a bit dated compared to a modern device with WVGA or higher res screen.
@GnatGoSplat: thanks
well, yes. The problem with iPhone 4 is the micro SIM. It has TomTom, it syncs Outlook via iTunes (I just have to figure out if it can do this on two PCs, home and work or only one pairing is allowed), it has DocsToGo for editing Office files, a good big display.... 3G could be a reasonable alternative, but as I change phone every three / four years I would like to get the latest, when I do the change...
I will ask Vodafone and my company if i can get a "micro" copy of my SIM, so that I can use the iPhone 4 without damaging the original one. Who knows ?
Android... the new dual core Samsung Galaxy S II or LG Dual look very nice only they will not do their job for me... too bad hardware and software companies have tuned up with carriers to have users "on line 24/7" spending money for data connections (flat or whatever) and sending them all their private data and files in the couds....
I really wish the "ole good PALM OS" was still here with us !
We are on AT&T and even for my company phone walking into the store they will replace my SIM without any questions. They will do whatever you want as long as your not changing anything on the contract.
I'm sure you can get a Micro SIM from Vodafone. Even if not, you can probably buy a new Micro SIM from eBay and have Vodafone switch to that SIM and then switch back to the old one if for some reason you have to return the SIM to your employer.
But if you can't, be sure if you get an older iPhone to get the 3GS. The S is important, because the really old iPhone 3G can't upgrade past iOS 4.2.1 and is much, much slower. Huge difference between 3G and 3GS.
Android also has DocsToGo and many, many other apps to work with Office files. You don't need to be online 24/7 with Android, it will work without the cloud. You can even install Droidwall, a very good app that will let you choose which programs are allowed to use mobile data. For example, I let my Android phone have full data access on Wifi, but only the web browser is allowed to use mobile data. You can turn off mobile data entirely with no problems if you wish.
Palm OS? But your old Palm Treo doesn't even run Palm OS! You could always try a modern Palm phone using WebOS, but I've never had one so I don't know much about those at all.

True, but looking around the web I found all and the contrary of all about Android and sync with Outlook / Office via USB.... And, I would like to sync two PCs witht he same device... I still am a little skeptical.
OK for DocsToGo, this is what I will buy if I decide for an Android, as it also is the only app that handles password protected files on the device.....

my reference to PalmOS was just because, after my Motorola StaRTAC, I had a Treo 90, a Treo 180, a Treo 650 and really loved them for what they could do at their time. Way ahead of other devices and OS !!!!

DroidWall leaks when you boot your phone, and with all those restrictions from the OP's company I'm pretty sure that rooting Android to use DroidWall is not an option.
Apps like APNdroid, Quick Settings and Widgetsoid are much better at keeping your phone offline. Nothing gets past a renamed APN.
If the OP can get Outlook syncing working then Android will fit the bill. There are plenty of calendar apps out there, so there must be one that does the job.
I still remember my old Nokia 6510 - nothing could beat the battery life in that one. Sometimes I could get even one week of battery life.
I think smartphone creators should think about extending battery life so it would last at least 3 days with very heavy usage.

My mother in law is 76 years old and I got her a Droid 3 about three months ago. She loves it. It is way more phone than she needs or uses but it serves two very important roles. I setup a generic gmail account. My wife, mother in law, and I all use this account for our calendar. Since we all have access to it on our devices, we no longer have over-lapping appointments scheduled. She is also coordinating with a realtor to sell her house out of state. Instant access to her email has helped in this process as well. I also rooted the device so that I could under volt it so that she gets much better battery life. She is not a power user so under clocking helped as well.
Hope this helps.

I second mike21pr, on a Nokia Lumia. The interface is really simple and intuitive and the phone will also have access to a free GPS app (Nokia Drive), which you are looking for.

An iPhone.. something she cant break :silly:
i donno anything about its ability to store offline maps, but i would choose a windows phone over an android device. the latter just offers too much functionality and may be too complex for your mum, whereas the usability and design of the former is simple, intuitive and minimalistic. however, a windows phone device could still have all the functionality your mum needs.
I'd have to agree with the Nokia, the maps are ok, the phone is easy to use and it's difficult to break. Not impossible, but pretty difficult.
samsung
The samsung exhibit 2 has been nice for me and my wife. It's really affordable for the specs, and you can put a 32GB card in it set it up with swapsd and load Navfree USA with all of the maps for the US. The maps aren't as good as google, but it works offline.
I got my mum a Samsung galaxy ace simple and easy to use she loves it the speks are low but budget phones are

You should give her one of these cheap windows phones, like the Nokia Lumia 610. It seems to me that windows phones are much more easy to use than android, at least for older people.
Not everyone needs custom JB on lg gt540, like I have
HTC Sense
In my opinion, an HTC device is the best solution for a newbie in smartphone. HTC Sense is quite simple and beautiful, my girlfriend has a Sensation and she is really happy of it.
A good nokia.
I may suggest Samsung Galaxy Notes - wide screen, so she will be able to easily read emails and books.
Good luck!

[Q] Coming from TB, looking at 8X and DNA

Gentlemen, time to retire the old Thunderbolt. Looking into the 8X and Droid DNA. I have watched and read a ton of vids and reviews on the 8x and DNA, now its time for the experts to lend thier opinion.
I will not be rooting or whatever we call it on the windows platform. thats a condition of the new phone. I have rooted or unlocked all prior phones, including my old Imagio, but the wife is accurate when she said they never work as good as when you left them alone. So with that, need un-unlocked opinions.
Storage - I use the phone mostly for music, some pictures for facebook and MMS, how bad is 16 (actually 11!?) with 7 skydrive? How many songs (or hours). Dont ask me to compare what I have space wise on my 32G SD card, my music is scattered from one file to the next, and the card is full of apk's and zips.
Overall performance - Really, this is where you guys can offer me true expertise. What do you personally think of the 8X compared to your old phone, especially if you came from a TB or android based OS?
iPhone factor - So I really like to brag about how my phones rock well beyond what my sheeps iPhone---I mean wife's iPhone can do. Can I truly have my tag say 'The iPhone killer!'
Thanks in advance guys! Everyone here at XDA just rocks the mobile world!
Come on guys, anyone got any opinion? Really would hate to reduce my choice to the DNA because I didn't get any feedback. Your opinions really matter, and would like to go into the store with a real good idea on the choice.
Let me know what you all think! Thanks again guys and gals!
Hey there,
Ive been running wp7 and its successors on my hd2 for some time (well over a year), as well as trying android and the dreaded ibone.
What i would say about wp8 and the 8x is this: It is completely different to droid & iOS. Both those os's are completely app dependant therefore data & memory hungry.
WP8 is different, if you are a facebook/twitter/linkedin bod (like me) these are fully integrated in to the os, hit 'people' tab and 'boom' all there in one screen - no app involved (in fact i hardly ever use the official fb/twit apps).
The os is smooth as butter, it was even on wp7 in the early days. WP8 is much better, the next generation, its fast, stable makes you smile in its natural and instinctive 'user-bility'.
What i would also say, is that you cannot fully appreciate a wp device whilst playing with it in a shop for 10 minutes. If you can, borrow one for a week and live with it - get it set up for YOU.........windows phone is for YOU. You will either love it or hate it, but i promise you an experience - Yes im a windows bod, have been since the days of wm5 - be different and own something that can only get better (just look at the low level of development from the ibone 4 to the 5 - point made)
Just my 2 cents of course - it is purely subjective.
Thanks Timmymarsh! I would love to borrow one, but doubt that will happen. Maybe I can get Verizon to go with a 15 day trial period or something.
I have a friend who works at MS, and he gets all the latest and greatest, and just loves his phone. Doubt he can get one for me ;(
Thanks for the information, it really helps to hear honest opinions!
I too have had rooted androids and jailbroken iPhones, but this phone has completely changed my outlook on things. While it has a few things I'd like different, I don't have any desire to change or alter it. Its fast, smooth, and didn't leave me with buyer's remorse immediately afterwards

How easy is its initial set up? I mean getting the screen to show the way you want, and setting up say outlook for contacts and emails? and can you tell me how that skydrive works? Does it play the music from there, or just downloads what I need?
Also, the xbox portion of the phone, if you xbox, how does it integrate and does it expand the xbox or more informational?
sooo easy to set up its painful, beats droid out the ground re contacts etc. I have an outlook account, gmail, msn, facebook, twitter & 3 other email accounts. So easy to link all your contacts so they appear in one contact page. Once you done it, its backed up for the next time - new device or hard rest
Mate, be different and get one, all new devices have their quircks, inc google and apple, but having said that, you wont be disappointed.
As for drop box, someone else will have to comment there as i dont know, i just sync the music i immediately want on my device so sant comment

Thanks again Timmy. I just watched a ton of vids where they demonstrated the 8X against android and apple, and I am really liking the idea of the live tiles, the different way the screen provides information, and the speed at which he was able to do stuff. Even counting he is paid to be that fast, its still impresive especially since he shows them how it works.
I am a minimilistic fan, and use SSLauncher with nothing but texts for my 'icons', but surprising, I find the boxes refreshing. I was leaning more towards the DNA, but ever since I started to get responses here, I think I am going to seriously check out the 8X.
not putting you off the 8x, its a great device, but try the nokia 920 in the shop too.

Yea, last rumor mill had it showing up around August, that came and went. So now they are saying end of this year (like in 18 days) or next year. If it doesn't come soon, then it wont happen for me.

How easy is its initial set up? I mean getting the screen to show the way you want, and setting up say outlook for contacts and emails? and can you tell me how that skydrive works? Does it play the music from there, or just downloads what I need?

not sure how SkyDrive works as I haven't used it yet. The Xbox support was a high point for me since it does so much that other phones can't or don't. Setting up your home screen is as easy as any I suppose. Simple but not boring
Sent from my HTC 8x using Board Express
decision made
Hey guys, want to thank all of you for helping, voicing your opinions, etc. I have made my decision.
Watched a 6+ part video on each area of the 8X and then learning about WPDemo.com, decided to go back to Microsoft. Looking forward to getting the new phone. Guess only question now is, what color?
Thanks again everyone! I even found several apps that are both WM and android. So I only loose a few (turn by turn hurts a little though!)
Any idea when thats going to be corrected? I refuse to pay Veri$on any more money then they are already getting!
Thanks again everyone!
