4" phones with Keyboards? - General Topics

Hey guys
although I think my HD2 is simply fantastic, i need a physical keyboard. I've had the HD2 for 6 months (?) now and I simply cannot type at the speeds I used to be able to on my old Tosh G900.
So, I want a high spec (like the Droid X), large 4"+ screen phone with a slide out keyboard. Apart from the Tosh KG02 (I think thats the model name) which appears to only be available in Asia, are there any out there or on the near horizon?
(Android or WinMob but would prefer WinMob)
Thanks loads!!!!!

+1 to know about your question!

Samsung EPIC 4G for Sprint.

Sad day ....
sadly, very sadly, Android still doesn't support Exchange properly. These phones look great but as I've found out, WM is still the only way of supporting (for me VITAL) Exchange....

Can you tell me what part of Exchange support is not working in Android?
I've been using 2 Exchange servers in Android 2.1 and now 2.2 on my TP2 without any problems. In fact, I never managed to use 2 Exchange servers in WinMo and ActiveSync always stopped synching after a bit.
But maybe it's just me not using any fancy Exchange features
I sync e-mail, contacts and calendar from both accounts in Android.

tasks don't sync.
I've still also had no confirmation that the "Notes" section of a contact sync or the photo's I have associated with people.
Link to Talk Android thread
Also, I am looking for a MS OneNote alternative, one that allows me to make detailed notes on the PC or phone and have them sync both ways.

WinMo on Magic ?

sorry if this will upset some Android devotees, but does any one know if there are there any roms or projects to put WinMo that run on the magic.
I love the hardware, and it would be great to be able to run some of my WinMo programs and sync. with Outlook on it.

Actually I don't think that WinMo supports Capacitive touchscreens! correct me if I'm wrong...
There are a plenty of reasons for windows mobile and against android. But I think there are 2 or 3 major problems with porting it to the magic.
First, I think getting the drivers for the touchscreen is almost impossible
Second, wimo does not support the magic resolution of 480*320
Third, Finding someone who is able to create a wimo rom from scratch and making a stable Version for an unsupported device
Android is ok, but it still feels like a big public beta software test
I did play around with my friend HTC TOUCH HD with winmob os.............no thanks,it feels..............old,
Just to add my tuppence worth......
I've been using WM for 4 years through Wizard to Touch+ to Diamond and to be honest I was sick of it. I have flash roms, designed dialler screens and spent alot of time with Pointui.
IMHO Android is very good and must run a close second to IPhone. The slick UI is what we have all been waiting for with WM and it has never happened.
I was considering a Touch HD/ IPhone / HTC Magic. In the end the integration with google and the good interface made me plump with the Magic and I am very very very happy.
I am a business user and leisure user and it really is a breath of fresh air to have a phone that actually works.....

thanks for the considered response
I was not really asking for "which is better", just the straight question about whether there is a project. It seems not.
I didn't realise the magic has a capacitive screen. thats going to be fun, my magic is coming today or tomorrow.
I have a diamond 2 as well, so i will be able to compare, hopefully 6.5 soon to android.
I don't think the screen resolution is any problem, but your third point is valid.
Google really need to get outlook sync. out of the bat. Apparently androids sold in asia have exchange sync already as they are "not google branded". hopefully google will pull its finger out soon!

Why??
Android where never ment to be used with outlook sync and exchange.
Exchange might be good to have, but i think outlook sync are pointless.

every device that claims to be a pda needs to work with the current most popular contacts and calendar desktop software
winmo, palm, iphone and s60 do
Yep but also smartphones have moved away from the old pda type as we know as palm and other devics.
Since most devices now are phones or in other ways seem to connect wireless, the defintion of pda moved to be static sync devices where you need to ged hold on you sync station, to now being making sync ota.
I will never being missing the cable sync.
Any updates??

Which Smartphone? Your opinions please

Hi Folks,
I'm looking at getting a smartphone and would like your thoughts?
I've currently got a BB Bold 9000 and am getting increasingly frustrated by the lack of apps and the price of them as well! Not only that but a few apps slows the bloody thing right down!
I did have my eye on the HTC Touch Pro 2 but am not too sure now?
Now i'm thinking which OS should I go for, which phone etc.
I will be using the phone mainly for work but do like my gadgets! I like the email functionality of the bold and the qwerty keypad but the screen is too small now, the calender really irritates me because when someone wants to book an appointment and i'm out and about it's difficult to quickly see what appts I've got for the week.
Also the speed of the internet on the bold is rubbish!
I have friends with iphones and am jealous because they've got loads of business apps and cool apps, whereas my apps are pants!
I need a unlocked 3g phone to use here in the uk so any suggestions would be welcomed, also not looking to spend megabucks on a handset.
Windows Mobile is by far the best OS if you use your phone primarily for work. So I'd get the Htc HD2 if I were you. Don't get the Touch Pro 2 now as it'll probably soon be replaced by a similar device to the HD2. If a physical keyboard is a must, then go for the nokia n900.
The HD2 isn't out yet is it?
When it does come out won't it cost a small fortune to get?

If you are comparing things to the iPhone, more than likely you'll be dissappointed at the app selection for Winmo as well. There may be a lot of them, but were for the most part designed years ago, are not finger firendly, and cost a lot more than iPhone applications ($9-25USD vs. $1-$5USD for iphone).
That being said, it sounds like you are a busy man, and managing your life is important. Winmo paired with SPB Mobile Shell 3/3.5 puts a simply phenemenal quick scrolling calender on your homescreeen, (this is among the many things it does for you). As for out of the box, the WM 6.5 lock screen also shows you your next upcoming appointment. If you are sycning with MS Exchange, you get built in access to your companies directory when sending e-mails or trying to pull up phone numbers. You also get more control over what content and how much of it syncs than I believe the other platforms have.
in your place i would wait until february or march 2010 then the mobile phones will get 4g which will allow you to surf with 100 mbit in the internet the max now is hsdpa with 7.2 mbit

Don't think we'll even have functioning 4G networks by then.
Go for TP2!!
It´s a great superb device
I was thinking of going down the route of the TP2. Have seen it being reviewed on youtube.
What's it like to text and email on the touchcreen without using the slide out keypad?

[Q] Activesync differences?

HTC Touch Pro user comes in peace!
I have been given the go ahead by my company to choose a new smart phone and on my current phone, my biggest use is Active-sync. I am also our Exchange administrator. I do not use mobile office much at all.
Anyway, I am considering all my options and it basically boils down to a choice between an Android 2.1 and WP7 device.
What I want to know is, what are the differences between Active-sync on a Droid 2.1 and WP7 device.. I do not have the luxury of trying our multiple devices so I am relying on your help, hence my question here... I was under the impression that Active-sync support was much better in 2.1? I am not looking for a full on "which OS is better discussion
basically windows phone 7 provides full exchange support except tasks natively (already built in the phone). on android, you can get the same experience using third party applications (i've heard native is pretty shocking).
i'm sure others will chim in after me... but either will work fine, you may have to do more digging for android to work completely with exchange, but it's doable.
Note: from word around, Windows Phone really only works well with Exchange 2003 SP1 and onwards.
Old versions of exchange are not supported by ms so they dont support them in wp7 or outlook.
Wp7 has better support than android.
The os with the absolute best exchange support is wm6.5
It supports pretty much every exchange policy anf almost all exchange content...

why sometimes OLD is better than NEW

Hi everybody.
this is my first post here, I hope the place is right for this post.
my problem: I want to replace my OLD smartphone TREO PRO WM6.1 with a new one, but I cannot find a model / OS that can do the same things as good as my current phone. So I may end up keweping the current one, until something better (for me) comes out.
I use my TREO PRO WM6.1 essentially for:
1) keeping my calendar events and contacts always up-to-date on my smartphone,
my office PC and my home PC.
2) make phone calls (also using kar bluetooth kit) and send messages (SMS)
3) keep a number of documents (files) always sincronized on my SD, my office PC and my home PC
4) read and edit Office files, even pasword protected ones on the smartphone when not at home or in the office.
5) off line navigation with TomTom (often abroad, cannot afford to use roaming
6) some browsing and e-mail (not push) by WIFI only
7) sometimes listening to some MP3 music
All the solutions now on the market have very good points but none fits 100% to my needs.
iPhone4: I would need to cut or change the SIM, to make it "MINI", and I cannot, as it it a company SIM and I am not allowed to do this.
Android: from what I have found on XDA, it does not sync very well with outlook via USB (I cannot use google, as my company does not allow to send data to the "clouds" for security reasons) and it's calendar app does not store (or show) events happening 45 days further than today. My calendar is full of recurring and events planned long before. Also, no TomTom for Android (at least as of now, although there are rumours about it coming...)
WinPhone7: it is even more "cloud" dependent than Android, and it looks like TomTom will never be there for it.
Blackberry: as I do not use push mail and do not want to be always connected (often abroad), I do not think this platform is the right one for me.
Has anybody any suggestion for what could be my best option, instead of keeping my Treo Pro with WM6.1 ? I confess, I have not looked at the Nokia world......
Thanks for helping me by sharing your ideas and opinions on the subject.
Well android phones are good all-arounders, but by they way you put it i'd recommend a blackberry: it's good for syncing data and has pretty much all of the basic things you're asking.
I actually can't see what you mean when you say you can't get one because you "don't wanna be always connected": actually there isn't a single phone out there forcing you to connect to whatever if you don't want to, and bb is no exception, so you don't have to worry. Tomtom isn't available for blackberries, but there's a lot of other programs which are on par with it: garmin mobile, wayfinder, and even nav4all which is free. Also, coming from a treo i guess bb form factor should appeal you too...i suggest you to wait for the new bold 9900 (hopefully out in a couple months), which is a nice phone imho. After a year and a half with a full touch screen android i really miss that awesome bb keyboard, and i'm actually looking forward to get one as soon as it comes out.
Ofc the geeks and fanboys here will go like "aw noez, dun get ztupid rim phones, they are outdated and suxxor lalalal, get android!!1", but to be honest this one seems to a much better option for an user with your needs. Just my 2 cents...
thanks, anzi grazie.
well, the problem of the BB is that it is very similar to my Treo pro, almost identical for size, keyboard and functionality (remember, I do not use push mail), and it will not run TomTom..... so why change the Pro with a BB ?
My idea is to change the Pro in order to have a larger screen, that can work landscape also.... OK, there is one BB model with a big screen, but if I do not use push mail, is it really worth taking a BB ? Maybe i am biased here, thinking that BB without using push mail is a waste of money.....I will give BB a better look anyway.
If the ONLY reason you don't want an iPhone 4 is because you have to cut the SIM, then you can always get the 3GS. It will be able to run even iOS 5 and you don't have to cut the SIM. Obviously, it's slower than the iPhone 4, but it does have a Cortex A8 based CPU so even at 600MHz, it's pretty decent. Other than slower CPU, other differences over the iPhone 4 is it has a lower resolution screen, 3.2MP camera, and no flash. The low res screen makes the 3GS look dated, but it's the same size as the iPhone 4 and displays the exact same thing so no information lost, it just doesn't look as sharp.
Have you researched HTC's proprietary Outlook sync for Android? I'm not sure if it's better than what you've read about, but I know HTC does have its own. You should be able to use it if you buy an HTC Android phone. If that doesn't work for you, could you do an Exchange Server sync? If you use Outlook because your company uses Exchange Server, then Android can sync to it directly. For me, it works well in both HTC and stock Android flavors. They've quoted Corinne Vigreux, the managing director of TomTom, as saying TomTom for Android will be "released soon", so I think it's definitely coming. It would be silly not to make it available for the #1 most popular smartphone platform.
WP7 - No, earlier this year TomTom said they won't be making a WP7 version. WP7 is a nice OS, but it just has too few users right now.
Can't comment on BB, never had a modern one.
Nokia - well, Symbian is on the way out as Nokia will be switching to WP7. I don't see the point of going to a dying OS.
So, I think either iPhone 3GS or Android. Definitely Android if you want something more modern. The iPhone 3GS with its low res screen especially, feels a bit dated compared to a modern device with WVGA or higher res screen.
@GnatGoSplat: thanks
well, yes. The problem with iPhone 4 is the micro SIM. It has TomTom, it syncs Outlook via iTunes (I just have to figure out if it can do this on two PCs, home and work or only one pairing is allowed), it has DocsToGo for editing Office files, a good big display.... 3G could be a reasonable alternative, but as I change phone every three / four years I would like to get the latest, when I do the change...
I will ask Vodafone and my company if i can get a "micro" copy of my SIM, so that I can use the iPhone 4 without damaging the original one. Who knows ?
Android... the new dual core Samsung Galaxy S II or LG Dual look very nice only they will not do their job for me... too bad hardware and software companies have tuned up with carriers to have users "on line 24/7" spending money for data connections (flat or whatever) and sending them all their private data and files in the couds....
I really wish the "ole good PALM OS" was still here with us !
We are on AT&T and even for my company phone walking into the store they will replace my SIM without any questions. They will do whatever you want as long as your not changing anything on the contract.
I'm sure you can get a Micro SIM from Vodafone. Even if not, you can probably buy a new Micro SIM from eBay and have Vodafone switch to that SIM and then switch back to the old one if for some reason you have to return the SIM to your employer.
But if you can't, be sure if you get an older iPhone to get the 3GS. The S is important, because the really old iPhone 3G can't upgrade past iOS 4.2.1 and is much, much slower. Huge difference between 3G and 3GS.
Android also has DocsToGo and many, many other apps to work with Office files. You don't need to be online 24/7 with Android, it will work without the cloud. You can even install Droidwall, a very good app that will let you choose which programs are allowed to use mobile data. For example, I let my Android phone have full data access on Wifi, but only the web browser is allowed to use mobile data. You can turn off mobile data entirely with no problems if you wish.
Palm OS? But your old Palm Treo doesn't even run Palm OS! You could always try a modern Palm phone using WebOS, but I've never had one so I don't know much about those at all.

True, but looking around the web I found all and the contrary of all about Android and sync with Outlook / Office via USB.... And, I would like to sync two PCs witht he same device... I still am a little skeptical.
OK for DocsToGo, this is what I will buy if I decide for an Android, as it also is the only app that handles password protected files on the device.....

my reference to PalmOS was just because, after my Motorola StaRTAC, I had a Treo 90, a Treo 180, a Treo 650 and really loved them for what they could do at their time. Way ahead of other devices and OS !!!!

DroidWall leaks when you boot your phone, and with all those restrictions from the OP's company I'm pretty sure that rooting Android to use DroidWall is not an option.
Apps like APNdroid, Quick Settings and Widgetsoid are much better at keeping your phone offline. Nothing gets past a renamed APN.
If the OP can get Outlook syncing working then Android will fit the bill. There are plenty of calendar apps out there, so there must be one that does the job.
I still remember my old Nokia 6510 - nothing could beat the battery life in that one. Sometimes I could get even one week of battery life.
I think smartphone creators should think about extending battery life so it would last at least 3 days with very heavy usage.

[Q] Is it Android or HTC?

Purchased the HTC One after the usb connection on my HD2 eventually gave out and it appears that was a BIG mistake.
I need a business phone that works well and syncs with Thunderbird, or if not Thunderbird I could go back to Outlook.
Cannot stand this horrible HTC One, nothing works well, most apps fall over, Google has it's scalpware fixed into everything, is it the phone or is it Android?
Should I go back to Windows?
Should I go for a second hand HD2?
I would prefer to sell the HTC and buy a new phone so any advice or recommendations would be most welcome.

i think its more of an application issue rather than Android.

Hi Larsjuh1987
Mainly problems on business oriented apps like Leica Sketch and Car Dock apps.
With the car docks the main problem appears to be with the voice search, but it's to be expected because voice search has to go through google so they can scalp information. Fine in a country with adequate cellular coverage but I am in UK and the system can only be described as "third rate".
The app developers recommend getting around this by running the voice search on the phone, like my old HD2 and even older iPaq, but it's not available on this phone.
I am thinking a Windows 8 phone may sort this out but I have no idea if it has the ability to voice search offline.
This again is where apple score although it's not a good business phone.
I get the impression from developers that Android works on most phones, it's just the HTC One thats not very good.
Treated myself to the Plantronics Voyager Legend headset, fine on my old HD2 and my colleagues Galaxy but not on HTC One, so I am having to use an old Plantronics 510!
I wish I was more confident to load a ROM from XDA and get around the problem that way.
Thanks for your reply.
