I want to purchase a cheap phone for use as a media/gaming hub,I have my eyes set on a Droid x2 since im selling my atrix 2 and my droid 3 doesnt have sound over hdmi...
My plan is toload it with videos and emulators and roms and use my xbox controller to play games on my hd screen.
would this set up work? a phone that has an hdmi cord, usb to otg and a power cord plugged in at the same time?
I was just going to use the usb otg cord and a usb splitter, maybe a powered one.
I want to make sure before I buy the splitter and not waste any money.Im guessing if it works on a droid 3 or atrix 2 it should work on a droid x2,could be wrong.
Thanks.

I have an old Lapdoc that I used to use with my Droid Bionic. I loved the latest version of Webtop and thought this was one of the best things about having a Motorola smartphone. The news that Motorola is discontinuing Webtop got me wondering if there were a way of using the Lapdock with my SG3, perhaps in mirror-mode. Anyone tried to make this work or have any ideas on how to do so? For those unfamiliar with the various Lapdocks that are out there, they have a male micro-HDMI connector and a male micro-usb connector that attach to Motorola smartphones. The micro-usb provides power to the phone. Even for those who don't already have a Lapdock, now that they are being discontinued, they can be found dirt-cheap out there.
If I'm not mistaken it has nothing to do with hardware but is all software. So your answer is no.
I believe there may be some options. Between a USB OTG cable, and a number of adapters.
I've ordered one myself for another project and will let you know what I come up with - hopefully the hardware arrives within the next week or so.

I got a 50$ lapdock for the Atrix 4G. I'm currently using it with the newest Atrix HD LTE that didn't get the WEBTOP software.
BUT as the lapdock is nothing more than an HDMI monitor with a USB hub/keyboard/touchpad, The Atrix HD use it as if it is connected to an HDTV with a USB keyboard.
It work very well. Any phone with HDMI out and USB can use the Motorola Lapdock. Even my MK802 PC-on-a-stick is ok with the lapdock.
As an OTG laptop, the lapdock doesn't need to tether or anything else. And most modern cellphone with dualcore cpu are as fast if not faster than an Atom based Netbook.
...plus is it stylish and very thin and recharge your cell on the go.

have fun !
Hm...
So the MHL cable I have doesn't support USB OTG, in fact, I'm not sure that any do. I'll have to dig through this thread and see if anyone's figured it out yet.
The lapdock's connections are standard: microUSB and microHDMI, and it's working well for what I purchased it for... though it would be a lot of fun to hack something together to take advantage of the SGS3 with it.
I recently picked up a ps3 dual shock and an HDMI cable for my HOXL. This pretty much turns my phone into a tiny game console. I'm wondering if it would be possible to charge and use HDMI simultaneously, via a splitter. That would be awesome, not only for gaming, but for movie rentals and netflix.

As far as I know you can, you can't use USB devices and HDMI though. Look on eBay for a MHL HDMI adaptor.. should be a dongle type thing that has HDMI on one end, a plug for your charger, and then the connection into the phone.
Will do. Thanks for the response.

I have a Samsung Infuse, screen broke, don't want to thorw a way, is there a way that I can turn into something like this. I would like to use the benifits of its wifi as well. Is it possible or a ROM available that would allow me to connect via my USB port on my TV?
You can give it to me, I'll really appreciate it.
It really depends on the software and what's available. If it has HDMI/MHL video out and OTG USB support... then yea.

The Infuse 4g supports MHL so yeah you can turn it into a Android mini-pc.
Check out youtube for some Infuse/MHL videos.
Buy a MHL adapter that also has an input for external power cause most TVs don't have power over HDMI/MHL
Old phone as android stick
I have several old android phones (2 unrooted, HTC EVO 4Gs and a Samsung Replenish) lying around and want to use them as android mini sticks for my TVs. I'd be using them moslty for streaming video/audio (Netflix, Pandora, YouTube, etc) and checking email, social media, etc.
This brings up a few questions:
1. How do I power it since it only has a mini HDMI port? My TV's HDMI does not provide power. Is there splitter available that will let me plug into the wall and to my TV from the mini HDMI?
2. Do I need special software on the old phone?
3. Can I use another android device as a remote control (via wifi) or do I need to get a fly-mouse or something? I'd prefer using my current android phone or tablet.
I realize that the sticks out there are cheap and more powerful than my old phone, but...why not give this a try?

Something with a HDMI port is ideal so the Evo 4G would make a great TV stick device. You should be able to use a USB charger and have the HDMI plugged in all at the same time. Thats what I do with my old Droid 3 which has the same ports.
There are apps out there that can let you control one device from another, you may need to be rooted though IIRC.

Does it work charge and enable usb host at the same time? The current one i have acts weird, if i leave tablet alone, usb plugged in host mode as adopted storage my k1 charges, but if i start using it, even on light usage, battery discharges even if it indicates it is charging
Haven't tried it yet. I'll let you know ASAP when I've tested it.

USB OTG and Y cables?
Sent from my SHIELD Tablet K1 using Tapatalk
Okay, they one I've got is damaged. Gotta send it back.
The ones Exile suggested I've one of them. Though, they connect all to big female USB! So you'd need another USB cable (Big male USB to micro male USB for the tab).
I've been using this one, and it works pretty well for charging and using OTG at the same time. But it won't recognize USB devices unless the charger is plugged in, probably because it has a built-in hub.

Thank you for the replies and suggestions, looks like the one im gettting is the same one by @primaleph
Y OTG cables do NOT work with the Shield. I tested a bunch and it's either charging or gamepad but never both simultaneously.

Well actually they do, very2 slow, i hooked the OTG i bought to my charger, my tablet and my printer, then started doing some typing work while listening to some tracks on spotify max volume and at about 20% brightness,, after i finished and checked my battery it went up from 95 to 97, also tried the same with a usb attached, so for light loads it does charge but for gaming, even i lose charge when playing games such as vain glory while the tablet is directly charging so im sure its still gonna drain but probably not as fast as not charging at all, or another thing is not all OTG Y cables are configured the same me and @primaleph just got lucky with the ones we got and yours are probably the not compatible ones
A printer?
Anyhow, it doesn't show the lightning symbol if two devices like charger and gamepad are simultaneously connected. Whereas, using just one of the devices works.

Yeah i use an app called printershare, it allows me to use printers directly via usb connection cause i still own those old printers with no wifi connection costs 10 bucks for the license though, i tried with my old usb gamepad and it also charges and gamepad works, i think you need a more powerful charger, i use a tronsmart quickcharge 3.0 with a 2nd port with a max of 6.5V 3amp output which i use to charge it in OTG mode, 5V 2amp chargers should work but sometimes the power cuts out on The devices being connected, happened to me while on a boat trip, boring 2hr ride, me and GF wanted to listen to some music but we both own over the ear headphones not those little earphones, i charge my shield with a powerbank that provides 5V 2A output, plug it in the OTG and use a usb soundcard with with two audio jacks so we both could listen and throughout the trip there are times the soundcard would lose power which was pretty annoying,
Heres a screen recording where it is charging and i attach devices one by one to my shield tablet

i bought this one , it work not enough quick and don t know if i did well,
i use mode 1 , plug hdd then plug charge, in video they use mode 2
AH man what disappointment tried my USB C hub with HDMI and nothing quick google search and you need a MHL adaptor what a step back
do they even make USB C MHL adaptor adapters
takes me back to my note 3 - 4 days those adapter can't even keep phone charging while consuming power as far as I remember it was and issue back then they only charge in "USB charging" mode speed 500 ma or less
have they advance with USB C ??

I do see MHL to HDMI cables on Amazon. But I am not sure if any of them work. I am personally looking for one so I can use it in the car so my kids can watch what I mirror off my A71 5g.
If anyone comes across a cable that works, please let me know. TIA

You shouldn't be too surprised if you're looking for old technology and get flashbacks of your old devices, what do you expect? I remember cables was a thing on my S3..
Its 2020, not 2012, who uses wires when we can easily go wireless? Spend that money you're wanting to buy wires with on a cheap Chromecast if your TV doesn't already have it built in. You can get a used one for like under $10, $5 probably.. I can sell you my 1st gen CC, for $5 if you want..
Then look for the "cast" feature in settings and there you go. That let's you cast a video on your TV screen while you can be doing something totally different on your phone, like browsing the web or something. Now if you want to mirror your phone screen so the exact image appears on the TV, thats possible too..
This may not help the individual question, however, it may provide info for someone.
I have casted my Note 8 using a Chrome Cast and Roku. The Roku Ultra worked much better as there was no lag.
I also cast movies from my PC Windows 10 to my Smart TV via Web/Internet and that works great. Problem with Roku is that Roku does not support AVI format movies. So, I can play AVI movies from my Note 8 or PC to the TV.
