Nexus 5 front video camera is dark!
I never posted a thread so hello, but I have a major issue with my Nexus 5. I checked on Google and I couldn't find anyone else with this problem. My front video camera is dark, it's as if the exposure settings are at like -5. That's how dark it is. I also have the camera mod downloaded (my phone's rooted). If you have any answer can you please provide it? THANKS!
Edit: I tried other apps and it's fine, I don't want to use them because most 3rd party camera apps suck. Front facing picture camera is ok too. Therefore it isn't a hardware issue.
Seems like it's the camera mod hack, from the sound of it.
Are you on a custom ROM? It may be interfering with the hack (I'm not familar with the mod.)

I actually took it off to test the actual camera. I was feeling like returning the phone, but ironically the phone fixed itself a couple minutes ago. I have no idea how, don't ask me, but it did. I'll close the thread. Thanks anyways!

Firstly, I would like to apologize in advance, as I have already asked this question in the 4.2 GAPPS section. re-posting it here since it is device specific (or may be). I am less than 2 hours into the forum so please excuse teething mistakes
I am stuck and need your help. I am running a rooted (of course!) VZW GS3 16 GB. I am on AOKP JB-milestone 1 ROM, Kernel 3.0.48. Android version 4.1.2.
Now I love the new camera and gallery. I have grabbed and flashed multiple versions of the same (android police, droidlife, the whole GAPPS 4.2 package... and multiple more).
In every version I have tried, I have had the same issue.. everything works (video, panaroma, stills during video, photoshpere viewer, gallery effects etc..) however, the most BASIC function, the one of taking still pictures DOES NOT WORK!!!.
The moment I take a still picture, the camera and the gallery crash, and I have to reboot to get them working (as previously) again. I have tried and tried and tried, multiple versions, complete rebuild, everything, no effect. I am at my wit's end, and seek the asistance of your prodigious intellectual faculties to help me put of this jam...
On a side note, I have not yet figured out a way of changing the storage location to external memory card in this new camera.. cant find the setting...
Please help me out friends..

Its a known bug on at least AOSP roms on the galaxy S3 that taking regular pictures without first touching the screen to focus causes the camera to flash. Also i believe using the camera flash causes issues as well. You just need to touch to focus first.
THANK YOU!!!!

You're welcome just glad i could help you out!
I'm having the exact same problem on the GSIII for AT&T, just to clarify after some guess and check. You have to hit the shutter button immediately after tapping the screen to focus. If you wait till after it achieves focus to hit the shutter button, it'll still lock up. You might want to have a standby camera app in case you want other people to take a photo for you and don't want to explain the bug in your camera app.
Thanks for posting the problem in such detail. Google took me straight here. And cheers for answering so quickly!

THANKS matt6800 - that solution works. Kinda sux though! So is there any fix yet?
Another wrinkle to this:
EDIT: not a new wrinkle! Discovered that my photos were in fact saved at the beginning of my gallery, not lost

Another wrinkle to this:
If you take a bunch of pictures using the workaround (touching the screen first) and then forget to do so on the next picture, the gallery app (camera) will freeze AND if you reboot (to regain access to the camera) you will lose all the pictures you took since the last restart.
This burned me badly with a bunch of vacation photos, which I seem to have lost forever due to an incomplete understanding of the consequences of this bug.
So hopefully this prevents others from realizing it before its too late.
Its more than a force-close!

That's a ***** of a bug. I had no clue it was that bad, I stayed away from it when I found out if I forgot to touch the screen I would have to reboot cause I knew I would inevitably forget to touch it. I wish there was a fix for this. It'd be nice to use the new camera.

tried holding until the focus turned green, then let go, and it still crashed
for those who really want the 4.2 camera, and are VZW, try these two TW ROMs (i know, they are not AOSP, but at the moment, these are the only two with working, unglitchy 4.2 cameras):
rally rom, has working 4.2 camera and other 4.2 gapps. This is a stripped down (432MBs) ROM, quick, and smooth.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2025739
SYNERGY ROM: this one also has both cameras and galleries, so you can pick and choose which one works the best for your situation:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1792499
SYNERGY was just recently updated and the dev team is really good about answering questions.

Thanks a lot, Matt. that solution also worked for me!!!
I'm so happy that i could revive my camera app now!!
Thank you again!!

Solutions given here:
Use your warranty.
Change the camera.
Take a component out that doesn't let the camera focus.
Is the lens dirty? It seems worse if it is dirty.

I also have the focus issue. No rom, modem, or software update fixes it. It seems to be a physical issue. I can gently tap the side of the phone while in the camera app and the camera starts auto-focusing correctly again (for a little while). I'm ordering a new camera to replace it soon.

Hello guys, just got my Z3 for christmas and I'm loving it, but there is one problem that is really annoying me.
When I try to take a photo with flash ON in snapchat, (only regular camera, not front), the photo gets blurry as hell. It focuses before it takes the photo, but it seems to capture the photo at the wrong moment/time.
So it kind of captures the photo right before/after the photo is at focus. This way it gets blurry as hell. This does NOT happen without the flash, or with the front camera.
And this is only in snapchat, not the stock camera app. Is this a phone related problem or a problem with snapchat? Anyone else heard of it? I tried to google it, but didn't find anything similar.
Is there anything I can do? I have tried reporting this to snapchat, but I'm not receiving any answer.
Thanks in advance!
Happens on every phone I've had with snapchat...
Take a picture with the stock camera app and use SaveMySnaps to share it.

Thats a pretty good idea, thanks. It says my snapchat account might get banned for using third party software, though..
Does anyone know if this is a common problem? Ive never heard of it or seen it before. I really hope this gets fixed soon, if its a software related problem. Really annoying..

It's not a phone specific problem. Happened on my M7, M8, Moto X and my Z3. Report it to Snapchat...
Did anyone find a solution for this? It is happening on my Sony xperia Z3+ as well. Only happens with back facing camera when flash is used. If flash it not used, it turns out fine.
Hi guys. I was wondering if someone with a rooted device could answer me this. So, since the A8 has no live focus on rear camera, I wonder if it's possible activating it just by adding the same lines of the selfie camera on the camera-feature.xml file on the rear camera section.
Maybe Samsung could have disabled this. Since like the S8 has just one camera and got the live focus. I don't know, maybe the software really don't support it and I could be wrong.

Oh that's sad. Btw, thanks for the answer. Guess I'll have to wait till someone make an workable GCam for the Android pie.
I love my pixel 3a, even the front camera selfies (even though it has a fixed focus). The phone takes awesome pictures, also with the front camera.
However, during video call (whatsapp or snapchat), the video quality is very very very bad. I mean like there is water in the lens or something or it just can't focus or its trying to smooth out everything till infinity. I don't get how this is possible. I know android doesn't have the best social media camera (compared to iphone, which is better optimized), but my galaxy s8 is doing whatsapp and snapchat video's just fine and in focus.
Other people have experience with this? it's really a pity, because it's the only thing i really dislike at the moment.
Any help would be appreciated.
With kind regards

Thanks for your reply Asep,
I am running the same build number as you. Yes I hope it's fixed in the next update. Have you heard other people have this problem? can't seem to find many people with this problem. I would assume many people would have this issue.

Just updated to the July patch. Unfortunately still have the same problem. I guess we're just unlucky and it's somehow a hardware issue. I can't imagine that the rest of the pixel 3a owners have the same thing but aren't bothered by it. I read on reddit of one guy who was talking about blurry front camera, but after phone was replaced the problem was gone.
I've had the same problem! My build number is QQ2A.200501.001.B2. I just got a new Pixel 3a as the last camera just died, but it was also an issue on the previous Pixel 3a as well.
Any news on this? I've found several threads on Google support sites regarding this issue but they've ve all been closed without a solution. There must be more people with this issue though and I'm not sure at the moment if this is a hardware issue or not.
Since last night we're in a serious lockdown here in the Netherlands and this is becoming a dealbreaker, cause the front camera is our most used lifeline with friends and family.
I'm on RQ1A.201205.003 and using WhatsApp for video calls.
Edit: see for example this thread from Google support: https://support.google.com/pixelphone/thread/63843045?hl=en
