Solutions given here:
Use your warranty.
Change the camera.
Take a component out that doesn't let the camera focus.

Is the lens dirty? It seems worse if it is dirty.

I also have the focus issue. No rom, modem, or software update fixes it. It seems to be a physical issue. I can gently tap the side of the phone while in the camera app and the camera starts auto-focusing correctly again (for a little while). I'm ordering a new camera to replace it soon.

Camera App with Manual Focus?

I just recently purchased some of the camera lenses from Photojojo, and they all work pretty well on my Nexus 4. I'm having some problems with focusing them well, however, especially the Macro lens. Basically, what happens is I tap on the object, and it goes through the little autofocus loop, and halfway through I see the PERFECT focus, and the it just continues and goes back to unfocused! Super frustrating, because I know that I can get the perfect picture, but I just can't get the object to come into a clear view.
So, does anyone know of an app that can do manual focus? Because I know it's not a hardware limitation that I can't get a clear picture. I can see that it gets very clear halfway through the focus loop. I just need a way to manually adjust the focus so I can KEEP that clear view.
Thanks guys!
Bump!
One more go!

It drives me crazy when it almost focuses on something and then apparently can't fully focus so it just goes back to being really unfocused. I would like to be able to take a slightly out of focus picture rather than not at all because it's too blurry to see anything

This! I hate seeing it come into focus and then go right back out! I want it to stop right in the middle!

Hey if it is a close up picture then find something to focus on (your hand perhaps) and move the camera until it succesfully locks on when pushed. Then (with your finger on the shutter button) move your phone to get your object in view and release shutter.
Also if the focus is a very close one you might want to just try the macro setting on the focus mode selection.
There aren't as many focuses available with manual focus as one might think.

[Q] HELP!!

Nexus 5 front video camera is dark!
I never posted a thread so hello, but I have a major issue with my Nexus 5. I checked on Google and I couldn't find anyone else with this problem. My front video camera is dark, it's as if the exposure settings are at like -5. That's how dark it is. I also have the camera mod downloaded (my phone's rooted). If you have any answer can you please provide it? THANKS!
Edit: I tried other apps and it's fine, I don't want to use them because most 3rd party camera apps suck. Front facing picture camera is ok too. Therefore it isn't a hardware issue.
Seems like it's the camera mod hack, from the sound of it.
Are you on a custom ROM? It may be interfering with the hack (I'm not familar with the mod.)

I actually took it off to test the actual camera. I was feeling like returning the phone, but ironically the phone fixed itself a couple minutes ago. I have no idea how, don't ask me, but it did. I'll close the thread. Thanks anyways!

Bad camera in 4.4.2?

Bad news for me - the camera in the new firmware has become much worse. Greatly increased color noise, noise reduction has become very aggressive. The result is blurred and "dirty". And the camera has become a kind of "click" while focusing.
Good news: Snap Camera appeared ISO setting from 100 to 2400 and HJR. Focus has become a little faster.
Motorola Razr Maxx HD XT926
ROMs:
- Nexesque 3.6 (based on stock 4.1.2, build 9.30.1)
- Stock Moto 4.4.2
APKs:
- Snap Camera HDR 4.2.1
- Moto Camera
Examples (100% crops):
Check it out on your phone plz.
sensor is too bad software is not important on this phones
My camera takes worse pictures now also. Hoped KK would fix that.

Just click on my photo and look at the details.
I'll be glad if anyone try to make test photo with Snap Camera or similar software (with better quality than stock Moto camera) before and after update to Kitkat. May be it was just a my mistake - may be i didn't do factory reset after update. But now I'm on 4.1.2 Nexesque again and happy with old camera quality)
I see this on my Wife's M, 442 also.
Get the latest Lenovo Cam in my Moto x page. See My signature.
I use the Google Camera app from the play store. It seems to have pretty decent quality. I also disabled the stock camera app so on the lock screen or when opening up the camera through a shortcut it opens up Google Camera versus the stock one. I'd try that if you haven't yet.

The only thing I don't like about the Google Camera is it won't let me state where to save my pictures. I do not like storing them on the internal memory. At least with the Moto camera, I can store them on the external SD card.
Lenovo is good but no way to save to extSD or OTG as it does on my X. Internal only.
On KitKat my rear facing camera in SnapChat stretches the pictures vertically. What's odd is that it worked fine for the first few pictures. Anyone else have that problem?
Tried to put all *camera* files from /system/lib of old 4.1.2 ROM to new Kitkat. First was /system/lib/hw/camera-msm8960.so and after rewrite and reboot with clearing dalvic i got a fail on start Camera app. Ok, i rewrote all remaining files like /system/lib/*camera* , clear dalvic and made reboot. Now i've got a bootloop)
So, is anybody know how to install all old 4,1,2 camera driver to kitkat?
Is anybody got same problem?
i think it's because your phone cant focus !
try other app with fix focus options
What do you mean - cant focus? I hold the phone, tap "shot" and after green square appears, phone makes the focused photo. On my examples you can see very noisy photos on KitKat, at first.
Any news in, guys?)

It's the Moto G2 camera and it is running great on my Maxx. I'm running rooted stock VZW 4.4.2.
Edit: switched back to stock camera, the Moto G2 camera broke tethering.

Just got a N5, camera disappointing

Hey All,
Just got a N5 and I'm a bit disappointed with the camera. Seems like this issue isn't new, but the camera has a really tough time autofocusing and even tap to focus.
I saw that there was a fix for older versions, but is there any update in 4.4.4?
Just as a curious note: most of the custom roms have this problem or not?
Thank you,
-Siroes
If you are disappointed with Nexus 5's camera performance, you should consider selling it away and get a phone with a better camera..
Agreed. If after 4.4.2 you think the camera is disappointing you must be a professional photographer. I'd highly recommend a Nokia WP as a phone camera or a quality camera.
Using Google Camera on 4.4.4 has a pretty decent shutter speed and also using different dalvik patches can increase the speed.
The camera works amazing when it does focus, but it takes quite a while sometimes. I never used 4.4.2, so I can't speak of that experience...
Just wanted to see if anyone else had similar issues.

Thanks, I really appreciate it.
I personally came from S4 than sold it to buy Nexus 5. Than I picked up note 3 but with bootloader being locked I said F U at&t and just purchased yet again another Nexus 5. Already rooted running Android L preview . I can care less about the camera like the other guys on here said I'm no professional photographer lol.

install google camera from playstore. better focus
Is this with or without HDR+? Without HDR on, I find 4.4.4 with the Google Camera will focus pretty quickly. With HDR on, it's obviously going to take a fair bit longer to take a snap.
Either you're doing it wrong or you're a professional photographer.
If you're the latter then I don't know what you're trying to do with a phone camera lol.
Camera works fine for me, better than the Note 3.

I'm in no way a professional photographer. If I want to take a quick shot, it usually ends up taking a minute or longer due to the focus

honestly, i have that and it makes very little difference. The camera quality is only good when using HDR mode which in some roms doesnt even work properly. If you are a photo takin/lovin person, this camera will be a disappointment.
A minute to focus? 60 full seconds?? I'm doubting that.
Anyway....camera phones are very cheap cameras....no phone will compare to even my 99 dollar Kodak camera.
I see comparisons with guys comparing this phone to that phone and they are all inferior to the cheapest of dedicated cameras.
If people are that concerned with getting consistently decent pics....carry a camera with you. They can be quite small and light, and will put all phone cameras to shame.
Just my 2 cents. ?
---------- Post added at 03:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:56 PM ----------
And.....if you rely on your phone camera to take your pics at a special event that you want good pics to capture the memories..... Its just silly to show up with nothing but your phone.
If it truly takes 60 seconds to focus I think you might have a problem with your hardware. Otherwise you should check out this thread if you haven't already http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...tos-post-pictures-videos-share-4-4-1-t2477920
Shouldn't take more than a couple seconds to focus unless you're moving the phone a lot. Perhaps your hand is too shakey? OIS helps but won't fix shakey hand completely.
At the worst it should take about 2-3 seconds to focus. Manage to get consistently clear pictures. If you update past 4.4.2 and still experience an issue, you've got a problem.

Thanks for that information. I ended up contacting Google Play and sent a replacement. Now it works just great, just as everyone has described.
I guess something was wrong with the hardware.
Thanks for everyone's input,

Glad everything ended well. A little scary there's so many hardware defects on the nexus 5 but I still love it.

Live Focus on Rear Camera

Hi guys. I was wondering if someone with a rooted device could answer me this. So, since the A8 has no live focus on rear camera, I wonder if it's possible activating it just by adding the same lines of the selfie camera on the camera-feature.xml file on the rear camera section.
Maybe Samsung could have disabled this. Since like the S8 has just one camera and got the live focus. I don't know, maybe the software really don't support it and I could be wrong.

Oh that's sad. Btw, thanks for the answer. Guess I'll have to wait till someone make an workable GCam for the Android pie.
