First of all, this is strictly an observation and will likely be locked and/or deleted by a mod (my money is on orb3000) but I have been a member of the XDA community since it first came to light, originally as a lurker and, after picking up my old ppc6800, a member. I have witnessed the rise and fall of many devices and owned now over 100 smartphones with many different operating systems myself. As far as brand loyalty goes, I have none. I will use whatever the best OS is for that time.
Now, since the g1 came out (and even before that in some winmo crowds) iPhone users have been referred to as sheep. The implication is that they blindly follow Steve Jobs and instantly accept whatever he says as a law that cannot be challenged. It also implies simple-mindedness.
As of late, I have witnessed more of this behavior coming from android fans than iOS or any other OS (and before it's implied it physically pains me to say anything positive about that jumbled mess of an OS). If you look in any android related thread that exceeds three pages, namely the "google vs...." threads then you'll witness, first of all a number of unnecessary posts. A good portion of android fans come in simply to state something along the lines of "yay google" or, "android all da way." The levels of literacy, or lack thereof, paired with the simple-minded approach of their posts is pretty much the very definition of a "sheep." Second, and in my opinion even worse, are the people who enter these threads, are fully aware of what is going on, and still treat the situation as though google is in the right and they don't deserve to get sued just because everything they are as a company is stolen. The most common argument in this type of post is that the patents are bull****. They are for trivial things that we do passively. The fact of the matter though is that this was not always the case. Case in point, I just had a discussion with someone who said that the way that we update our address book is not a valid patent. Now, in modern times updating our address books on our phone or computer is something we do in passing. However at some point the ability to do so was unheard of until someone came up with it and filed a patent. Should a patent be lost just because something has been popularized enough to become routine? The blind following is the other side of this "sheepish" behavior.
Though I'm absolutely certain it will, this was not intended to start any wars. It's more or less a cautionary measure. Don't turn into that which you so desperately hate.
Agree. My first 'smartphone' was a temporary g1 while my Nokia(can't remember the model no. but a small metal one...) was being repaired. It WAS a revelation, but behind the then current iPhone in many ways. I subsequently went for an X10, and now an Xperia Arc despite the initial poor support from SE. I still prefer the android OS for several reasons, but ultimately the iPhone is very good at what it does. There will always be a huge argument over the open/closed OS and who are the sheep, I was pretty anti-Apple years ago but in retrospect it was just pettiness.

For the record I'm not trying to insult anyone. Actually I'm saying you shouldn't insult another unless you exhibit none of the characteristics in question yourself.
Most of the "Android ftw" or "Android is much better" posts are from people desperately trying to reach 10 posts so they can ask some question in the devs sections which has probably been asked before.
Just look at the Steve Job's or battery related threads in OT, they're full of it.
This is an interesting topic. I believe that you will find smart people and trolls in all OS camps. My belief as to why so much Android now is its success. The larger and more prominent an OS is the more backers it will have and with this comes the fools. The sheer volume of Android posts vs windows phone posts here suggests that there are more posters and thus more trolls. That being said Android 4 lyfe.

I think the real problem is the posts like this one that whether directly or indirectly are promoting people argue. Most of the bashing starts with unecessary comments designed to get a rise out of people...for example (taken from an actual thread in XDA)
Post- "or you could go android"
Reply- "not desperate enough to downgrade like that"
To me that was a comment that in a forum where the majority of users utilize the android OS was specifically meant to start an argument. That is exactly what starts a flaming thread. Names of the involved will not be disclosed.

Definitely! without a doubt
it's just as inconceivable as some one patenting breathing, but instead they register it as "inhale & exhale of air"
whom ever gets the patent first, will be able to collect on roughly 7 billion humans breathing on this planet.
yay! for vague and stupid patents.
the whole patent system world wide needs to be re-assessed, anything that has already become popularized, illogical, common sense stuff, part of our daily life, should simply be invalidated.
patents should be scientifical in nature, with prof of concept, equations, exact measurements, exact definitions, must be working, not theory, nothing vague like we have seen in all the latest battles in court.

the OS / software can always be changed, specially here in XDA

currently no other manufacture can hold a candle to the slew of cool devices being release by Samsung
if anybody else release a better phone, I'll be the first to jump ship and get the next best thing

Even if I don't agree with your original point entirely I really agree with this right here.
I still refer to apple users as "iSheep" sometimes.
You just have to understand that when I say that, I am not saying that A. All apple users are sheep. B. there aren't users of microsoft or google who are sheep.
All brands have blind loyalist, all systems have flaws.
The problem I have with "iSheep" is that they don't research, think or care about what else is out there. They also accept products built to be restrictive towards them.
Sure android devices do have restrictions and flaws and fixing that voids the warranty, but at least the ground up design is based on allowing the user to do what they want.
Android is just as guilty of Apple of having followers with blind loyalty, I don't deny that nor do I ever try to.
I will also say that part of my critiquing of apple comes from the fact that apple markets directly to the users ego. They sell "cool" they don't sell devices. It is marketing gold, but as a person studying software engineering.. I absolutely abhor the way they don't market devices.. They market a reason to have arrogance and superiority complexes.
I am not saying users of other products are innocent, but nothing burns me up more than to have someone start being judgmental of my purchases because they were blessed by the all knowing god Jobs in the Apple store.
Ok, time for me to rip on android users for just a second.
Guys, I love android.. Can we get past the inferiority complex now? We have a lot of great options.. I don't care how the latest i-whatever compares.
I really don't care to see the i-whatever compared to every android product out there either. Quit treating it like an on going competition.
I mean really.. if we quit comparing devices at every single turn, we will all be that much happier.
I like to keep track of what is out and what is up and new.. But, seriously.. why even talk about i-whatever at all? they release a phone once a year.. Why compare brand new phones to ones that are in the electronics world almost legacy hardware.
this post should be moved to the question and answer forum, LOLOL
i concur iSheep vs. aSheep vs. mSheep (or wSheep?)
it's true, people should just focus on the fun thing about the latest and gadget being released.
after all that's why most of us are in here.
let the companies fight each other until there's no left
but until then as consumers lets just rip the benefits, and hack the crap out of the gadgets that we like the most.
Hey everyone I'm new to the forum. I was just reading this, and found it interesting haha. So what exactly is meant by the term "sheep"?

that comparison is non-sensical and hypothetical. Had the first non-aquatic creatures been humans and the first to crawl out of the water and begin to breathe shown everyone else how to do it then it'd be sensible that they profit off of it. However, there are many things that we use daily that are patented that we use because they were good ideas. Why should those people lose this source of income just because they did a good job?

Ok, that may be a non-sensical comparison. But what about something as simple as a toothbrush or comb? These items were invented by someone and I can make them in my basement if I wanted to and sell them without a problem..because they are practical. At one time some of the things that phones can do nowadays were thought impossible...but with the advances in software and hardware it makes it practical. Once something becomes practical, and isn't made available by some gross reverse engineering or theft, it should be fair game.

Another issue that I have, is patents hamper innovation.
What is the point of developing something new based on existing technology, if your only going to get sued for it anyway even if you are doing it totally different?
Now days being "inspired" by someone else is grounds for a law suit..

Apple also raised concerns that every Galaxy Tab sold would cost it future app sales as the users would become "Android people". Apple's iTunes App Store dominance would be challenged if customers were "seduced" or "sapped away by the Galaxy Tab and its infringements".
"They'll then be Android people and the investment in the apps that they make to purchase on their Galaxy Tab will be something they can't use on an Apple product," Apple's lawyer said.

Samsung's lawyers have criticised the fact that Apple did not seek injunctions against previous Samsung products that would by their logic also infringe its patents. Apple's response to this was that, because Samsung is a significant supplier to Apple, it "engaged in negotiations in the first instance".
"We're not the first Android on the market and other people are getting in fast. It's critical that we're a first mover not dribble in behind everybody else. It's blossoming at the moment," Samsung's lawyer said.

Apple real target is not really Samsung violating their patents, it's about afraid of losing market to Android, and afraid of people choosing Android over iOS, and people spending their money in Android Market than Apps Store
When Android first started with HTC and Motorola, they were not as advanced enough as the hardware spec offered by Samsung
which easily attracted a lot of people, myself included, i purchased it for the hardware.
so, clearly Apple only wants to slow Samsung down, just so people have less choices to be switched over to Android
Apple is preventing people from Choosing what they want to use, by their logic eliminating Samsung will drastically reduce the will to choose another better device and less chance of people liking another OS
so practically the same can be applied for the good phones being released by Samsung for Windows

Which part of this is immature? The part where I made sure that the sarcasm was in the first dozen characters of the message body - so that a mouse hover over the subject in the topic list would reveal it?
Or the part where I'm expressing my continued annoyance with the complete lack of realistic response from Samsung on this? (which is the point of the messsage - in case you missed it.)
As for being a great developer - this is actually quite tame compared to some of the things those better than myself (both of them, actually) have to say about samsung, HTC, and others.
I'm merely repeating what samsung's marketing department is already doing: Talking about a great ICS upgrade coming to these devices, but leaving the page blank when asked WHEN it's coming.
As for how it might make me look - I honestly couldn't care less. Because it seems to matter to you, however, I'll reveal that I didn't bother to shave this morning, and I haven't taken a shower since last night. Oh, and my shirt is wrinkled. (That has nothing to do with maturity - it's just laziness.)
Take care

It should say 'Coming soon!' or 'Error Code 404: Page cannot be found'.

I just hope that once ICS drops there is enough source to get CM9 to this device. The current ROM is laggy as hell. A nice ASOP option would be wonderful.

I'd be dishonest if I didn't say that I'm close to giving up hope for this tablet. Samsung is treating it as a red-headed stepchild, and won't even release the full honeycomb sources so that the dev community can pick up the pieces and fix that which they either don't care about or don't have the resources to fix.
However, its not just this one tablet. I'm starting to notice a pattern with samsung... they do make nice devices, but once they have your money, you apparently are nothing more than excess baggage to them. Instead of giving us good support, releasing GPL'd source code, and delivering upgrades that they promised, they gave us an app we can use to complain with. I guess having an app spitting out scripted responses is cheaper than having a human doing it. It's not like you really need a human to say "it's coming soon."
They have resources developing a dozen new devices at a time (given their rate of new product announcement), but what resources are fixing the issues and keeping their existing product lines current? It doesn't seem like much.
Since ICS was released on the GSM galaxy nexus (8 months ago), how many new products has samsung released or announced? A couple tablets, and several new phones. How many existing products (which were promised ICS upgrades) have received that upgrade? Two (and at least the SGSII release was very buggy.)
Keep in mind that samsung has had the ICS sources for quite a bit longer than other companies.. Yet, other companies are upgrading their existing devices long before samsung is. Look, for example, at Asus tablets.
What does that tell me? It tells me that if I buy a samsung device, they'll treat me well for the 14 day return period, and then treat me like dirt. It tells me that a samsung device is a FOOLISH investment.
Samsung, you will NOT be getting my money for my next tablet purchase. I don't care how thin it is or how fast it might be. I'd rather have a supported product that's slightly thicker or has a slightly slower processor.
Take care
Gary

I concur. It's ok to have threads like "Multitasking is a joke on this device", "Who else is returning their handsets?", "Disappointed w HTC QC" etc. but it's not ok to have a thread confronting the complainers. It's true that if you spend money on something and it has issues you're entitle to complain but srsly saying **** like "Im gonna return my HOX and buy an s3" is just plainly redundant. This phone is a complete new direction in manufacturing technology for HTC and the only thing I can chastise them for is the fact that they seem to rush it out, but I can totally understand that it has software/hardware issues. Instead of threatening to return and to buy from Samsung, why dont people just either do it and move on w their lives, or be patient and wait for a solution? Look at the screen flickering issue being incrementally solved as an example. Moreover, the S3 hasnt come out yet so stop it the comparing bs already. Werent the S and S2 plagued w issues upon launch as well?
Mini rant: Samsung hasnt changed their handset manufacturing or design since like forever (really I have a 2008 Samsung f480 or something and it looks reminiscent of the Galaxy line) so it's expected that their handset making process is more refined. It's not fair to compare an old-fashioned design w something as innovative looking as the HOX.
So, you are COMPLAINING about complainers? How is your topic any different from the rest? At least the topics where people complain about issues, helping raise an awareness of the problem, with a hope that the developers will fix them, while topics like this have absolutely no purpose whatsoever.

The great news is that the SGS3 will be in people's hands in less than two weeks. If the launch goes like the i9100, and GN, the comparisons to "perfect" that we've been seeing will suddenly look pretty feeble. As they say, "he who laughs last, laughs best."

There's little constructive conversation in the complaint threads. No one's trying to put their heads together to clarify and resolve a problem. They are ***** fests. The multitasking thread is a great example. 2/3 of the posts are just "OMFG, this is inexcusable" pile ons. And anyone that dares say it isn't bothering them is squashed like a roach.

I agree. People can complain for 65 pages about a new phone, but if someone creates a thread about being tired about all the *****ing, it gets closed immediately. The reply by the Mod was condescending and rude, yet he allows other threads to continue. No surprise though, it's the XDA way.

So, what are you proposing about that particular? We should all just shut up, go with the flow enjoy the broken phone? Seriously, one thing is complain about something minor, like theme colors, another is something that makes the phone virtually unusable. The more people complain about such things, the more the manufactures get aware of that, the more chances they gonna do something about. Maybe perhaps we should get another topic where people can vote if they like it or not the multitasking is working?

Actually, topics like this help to even out the discussion and see both sides of the story. A casual user would get the impression that the phone was garbage and no one likes it if all they read are complaints. It needs to be known that not everyone is complaining about the phone. Both Samsung and HTC have designed their products to meet the needs of millions of people. Along the way there were bound to be compromises. If any of those compromises don't meet your needs, don't buy the phone. XDA probably represents at most 5% of the phone buying public. For 25% of the 5% to think they can band together and try to make multi-billion dollar companies bend to their wishes is pretty naive. So by all means, have at it but don't ridicule the people that see the futility in some of the complaining.
Some of the features of the navigation system in my car drive me crazy and other members of its forum agree. It would be laughable for a small group of us to flame the manufacturer expecting them to revise the system because we don't like it. But yet, here on XDA, that's a pretty much daily occurrence. I don't like the way the automatic soap dispenser works on my dishwasher. Maybe I should gather up a group of fellow disgruntled owners and spam the manufacturer's Facebook page demanding they change it. If you want to send a message to a manufacturer stop buying their products. That'll get their attention a lot quicker than #neveragain campaigns. The GPS on the SGS (i9000) was in fact with no debate FUBAR. Owners launched the largest social campaign I've ever seen trying to get Samsung to fix it. Samsung never responded. They and Apple now share 90% of mobile device profits. Oh well, so much for that.
I don't know what you guys do for a living but decisions at large companies aren't emotional; they're statistically and financially driven. In cases like Asus and HTC unlocking their bootloaders it wasn't the rallying of the 25% of the 5% that made them rethink their policies. They were probably on the fence to begin with and the positive PR and low financial impact is what got them to change position. A device can easily meet the manufacturers financial objectives even if the entire XDA universe boycotted it. We're described as "enthusiasts" and make up a small but vocal part of the phone buying universe.
HTC's now on record saying multitasking is working as designed. Everyone here is still in their remorse period. You have two choices: 1) return the phone, 2) keep it and hope that since this is now on HTC's radar maybe there may be some future improvement. Option 3, which a lot of people seem to be taking, keeping the phone and *****ing among themselves isn't going to change how multitasking works.
Things like petitions and posting on social sites are fine. They are ways of communicating with the manufacturers and letting them know how some of their customers feel about their decisions. But as with everything, there's a time to call it a day and move on. This isn't a civil rights fight; we're talking about features on a phone. And of our "issues" probably 10% would even be noticed by the phone buying public in general.

The problem here is none of such compromises are publicly available for users to weight their decision with, none of the reviews have mention such crucial flaws, they have some cons about colors in photos or phone being too wide, but nothing that would greatly affect user's experience with phone's usage. Customers will have to experience it themselves, which means they will have to buy it first. (for example LG Nitro HD has defective hardware compass and the only way to know about it to experience it yourself, because nobody is talking about)
In this particular case with multitasking, the only people who's not getting affected by it are the same people who shouldn't buy such phone in the first place, since they just wasting money on something they don't use to it's full potentials.
Also, the same logic as "don't like it, don't buy it" can be applied to the OP complaining about the complainers - don't like it, don't read it, move along. But, it's just does not work in our imperfect world...

On this, you and I totally agree. Part of what makes XDA fun (for me) is the difference of opinion. It's interesting to see what's important to people and how everyone uses their device differently. The battles always start when smart, knowledgeble, strong-willed people all try to get each other to agree. And I've never seen that happen here or anywhere else.
Imagine I'm making a thread like "Who else is not returning their HOX and dont give a **** about the Samsung Plasticky s3". Pretty sure it will be closed so quick my chair still doesnt get warm yet.

Actually, topics like this help to even out the discussion and see both sides of the story. A casual user would get the impression that the phone was garbage and no one likes it if all they read are complaints. It needs to be known that not everyone is complaining about the phone. The last thing anyone wants is a media blackout.

No i think what is being said is that these threads dont help other users, they just are meant as a knee-jerk reaction to complaints threads. If you want to do what you are suggesting in your post, then you should start a thread along the lines of "I love this phone and here's why", not "tired of the complaints." That's just a complaint about complaining, plain and simple.
I also started a thread speaking of my problems with the one X and I got a bunch of people whining about my whining which I don't understand. And the point of the thread was not intended to go that route. Anyways I guess alot has changed here in XDA.

I'm struggling to understand why so many people here are so anal on the benchmark scores. Does it really matter? will a few points up or down help you decide on whether to purchase it? When you buy a new car, do you ask other owners for their BHP results to help you decide?
If you like the phone, then get it, don't let a bunch of figures help you decide...they mean nothing anyway...very few, if not any apps will require the full processing power of the note 3.
If you're going to root it and put on a custom rom, then don't even bother to ask someone for their benchmark results, as you know full well that any rom cooked will result in different scores.
I love this community and am all for android and the customisation that comes with it...but christ, some of you are annoying!

Why do they rate cars with horsepower and torque then? When speed is really figured by weight to power ratio? Why do they have mpg? Who cares about mpg? It all matters how you drive etc etc etc
Why test 1/4 mile, 0-60, 0-100, braking, slalom, top speed, fuel range, etc etc list goes on and on. people want to know what a car (phone) can do before they buy it
Because it's interesting.

Now that you got that off your chest, how about letting ppl. who know how to use benchmarks... do and use benchmarks?
yes...because you can use benchmarks to your advantage.
neither of us are twelve anymore, admit it.....benchmarks are just a way to show you have penis envy.
I thanked the OP while I understand both sides. I enjoy benchmarks while taking them with a grain of salt. They give you a round-about in direct comparison to other devices, while not translating to things that matter such as "frames per second within a game" or "amount of seconds to open an excel spreadsheet"
exactly....they're not accurate within 1000 points, so more than a few grains of salt are needed when looking at them.
It's nice to know your device is the best, however, it totally depends on how you use your phone. I add about 200+ apps to a device, which heavily affects the benchmark, so i never look at the initial scores.
it just annoys me at how anal some people are and how they take a score as a direct affect to their decision of purchase or wait.

It seems you are lost at what benchmarking is for and can only think about is underage penis. XDA is a place for mobile gadget discussion, part of it is knowing the exact capabilities of said gadgets, and @mods will show you soon whether sexual fantasies are up to these standards.
I find it a tad more odd that posters refer to a Penis and anus? Now THAT is odd
but even when the SG3 was announced, basic use was seen as ''lagless'', and the benchmarks were the best around....what's changed? apart from gaming, apps haven't changed that much to warrant such a fast device.
gadget?......you mean smartphone? there's not much info about gadgets here.....smart phones (and the newly added 'watch') are pretty the only gadget thing catered for here.
None of us are building phones like computers, so benchmarks on a fresh phone are not really anything to brag about. It is just something you go out and buy. I don't think the benchmark scores once you load a bunch of apps or a different ROM make much difference but if you knew what the benchmark of an out of the box S4 was and then compared it to and out of the box Note 3 that would give you a good idea what the difference between the phones is going to be. Other than benchmarks how would you suggest making the comparison? You can look at spec sheets till you are blue in the face but the benchmarks will give you a good idea how a device is going to perform.
you don't quite understand Sigmund's work then, do you ?

The number of screen pixels changed, the amount of tolerable processing time changed, the number of actively running apps changed, the complexity of services changed, the pixels and bitrates of camera operations changed, the amount of data going through RAM, NAND, connections and cables changed... and you changed, you are now 29 and talking about 12yo penises to random ppl. on a tech site is extremely worrysome.
Say you have two phones you are considering that cost the same amount of money, the question would be why wouldn't you care about benchmarks? Are you just buying the one you think has the better logo on it? Personally I would prefer my cash go to the device that I can get the most out of, not only now but 10 months from now. If you are one of those people who keeps a phone for 2 years the games available 2 years ago didn't even come close to taxing your phone the way the ones that are being released now do. I'm going to assume the same will be true in 2 years.

Any time Apple users have issues I laugh. I always view them as though they're in a league of their own, like they're "elite" and better than everyone. When half of their OS is buggy, you'll still have people defending Apple as though nothing is wrong.

Is this thread just to take the heat off of Google for releasing a lazy/broken OS? Either way, I can assure you from the 100+ bug fix changelog that Android 12 is in a worse situation than IOS ever has been.
not sure a thread on an internet forum takes the heat off a multi billion pound company
Personally ive not had one issue with the pro 6 or android 12. Considering how many have been sold and the tiny percentage pf people complaining on here, most of which is idiots throwing their toys out the pram, im not sure id agree with the "lazy/broken OS" statement either.

Yeah, I suppose it's each person's perspective and how they use their device. I have used every version of Android, and this has had the most issues I have experienced. Even keeping a steady mobile connection has been a problem for my device. Problems from background apps just playing out of nowhere (YouTube), to alarm clocks not silencing without a force close. It's not been great in my opinion. I'm glad you haven't experienced any of that though.
Also, I don't believe it is fair to call those complaining idiots. Obviously there are some real problems with the software by looking at the fixes they had to issue. Truth be told, it's probably just a small percentage so far that they tackled.

Definitely! It seems "Material You" is really just pushing what they like on you. Aside from that, Google has done a great job at making developer's lives miserable when trying to compile from source from these newer devices. Alright, think what you will. I'm sure Google broke some kinda record with all of the required bugfixes today though. It is being pushed on those that want the phone however, as you can't downgrade to a more stable OS.
It's interesting that some of you guys lash out when someone doesn't agree with you though. I'm stating my opinion on the OS, and FACTS regarding the buggy android 12 (proven by today's update). So instead of being intelegent and retorting with facts or even your own opinion, you guys call people "idiots" and "misinformed". It seems like this thread is going to continue to be childish, so I'm out. Enjoy the finger pointing and scapegoating with Apple. Take care man.
I'm curious. Why is this thread here? Can we focus on the device this forum is about and not about problems other devices are having. It comes off a little petty and a lot off topic.
Apple has its fair share of major issues. I have an iPad and had an iPhone years ago and they always had their fair share of annoying bugs. Don't act as if pixel issues are unique.
I don't know why, but this thread makes want to take a seat, relax, and eat some popcorn

Some you assume and hope will be fixed. Nevermind you're applying that flawed logic with a wide brush across anyone having a problem.
Gotta love it though. Oh you shouldnt complain about the issues you are having with the phone you spent your own money on, because there are phones that you don't even own that are having problems. Well when you put it that way it makes so much sense lol.
This is a lot of whataboutism all because people value being a fanboy over being helpful in a community meant to, well be helpful.
But don't be mad at my comments. There is probably someone somewhere else being a Debby Downer about some other beloved product. After all that's the logic here.
