Phone heated and now won't turn on - HTC One S

So today I was sitting and I felt my pocket was hot. It was my phone, and it was ridiculously hot! I quickly shut it down via system, and let it cool down. I tried to turn it on but it won't. and I also tried charging it as well. I called HTC and they told me to re calibrate the battery, but that didn't do anything. the repair is $120 dollars and probably a few weeks without a phone. What should I do?

I see some batteries on Amazon that these guys seem to be using for about 20 bucks.
Don't know about the price of tools
I definitely wouldn't send it back in for $120, that's just me. I would buy a new phone.

I have no idea if it will turn on. Sorry. (my gut says probably)
I guess it depends on how hot the battery actually got and if it affected the other components.

I would repare it and buy a cheap Nokia-Phone for 20 bucks for the time you dont have your One S. I paid more than 160$ for a new display for my HTC Wildfire wich has actually the worst display on the market.
If you wont let it repair by HTC you can buy a battery but it maybe wont work out because there has to be sth. that made the battery getting so hot. Maybe it was the Mainboard that's a bit broken which let the battery getting so hot. Just my considerations.

[Q] Random Shut Downs, Only when plugged in

i have been getting some random shut downs but only when plugged in to a wall charger. at first i figured it was due to heat while being charged. but the phone could shut down while plugged into the wall at any given time no matter how much charge there is or how long it's been plugged. Last night I plugged it in before bed at 30% and today I woke up at 44% with the phone off. Sometimes it's minutes until it shuts down and sometimes it's hours. It's the same on any Rom/Kernel I tried. Thinking it may be a hardware issue. Any ideas? Thanks.

Happens to me too... I'm on stock though.
And is it me or does charging the phone off seem to be ineffective?

which makes me believe this is strictly hardware. its not really like the software related reboots of the past. too bad i can't get it to go while plugged into pc, otherwise i could check logs to see what was up. let me know if you can recreate like clockwork. thx
Its hardware trust me. I've had in total like 6 g2xs and this is the first I've had with the issue.. I also have another now.. Both have the same rom, baseband, kernel and apps. Yet my new one shuts down on the charger.... Its hardware for sure and a replacement is in route. No point trouble shooting its a bad phone.. Threes many good ones just be patient... Now to wait for replacement...
If your on your 6th G2x, did you have to pay the 20 dollar exchange fee or whatever it's called? It would get pretty expensive after your 3rd or so G2x.

no. Bought first one full price it had no issues but dust, return no fee, then I exchanged again from pixel, no fee. Thats 3. Then I sold it for a sensation. Had bad luck with the sensation so I sold traded it on CL for a G2x and cash. Well that g2x was awesome too. so thats 4. I then dropped that ***** hard and had to exchange for another no fee again because I paid 130 through asurion. Thats 5. that g2x is awesome too. Now on a new line of service I got a free g2x with a online deal, so theres 6. Thats the one Im on now and it sucks donkey doooo.
but ive had enough to know there are good ones with no issues. I knew this one was gonna have issues cause of the ratio of no issues vs hearing issues here. LoL time to hunt for the good one again. LOL then after this I got to get the other g2x replaced again cause it was dropped again, and I cant have that. So Asurion that will be.....
Wow. Asurion must love you! LOL!
Last time I gave T-Mobile support a call, they wanted 20 bucks.
But that's a lot of G2x's my friend. And how much cash did you add on top to get the Sensation?

Oh and only 270 for sensation used upgrade.
This sounds like a defective battery. If your phone was plugged in at 30%, then you slept all night and woke up to a 44% charge with the phone powered down, that means that the battery was not taking any incoming charge for the vast majority of the night, nor does it seem that the battery was powering the phone for the majority of the night. Charging from 30->100% should only take 2.5 hours or so - maybe 3.
It could be that when you plug it in, it heats up - and thus expands. This could cause a loose connection to the battery somewhere (maybe something as simple as the physical contacts for the battery, or could be something more intricate inside the phone).
As much as you don't want to hear it, i'd say you'll probably need to take it to a store or send it in for replacement.

Thats my thought. It's still plugged in but does not charge. Forgot to mention that it requires a battery pull to restart. So possibly the phone is not really off, just in a non responsive idle state. Im going back to stock for now to see if that changes anything. I know they will ask if I got the update so I might as well. Thanks for the info.

Half the time its off, and half in a non responsive idle state. Cause sometimes you can turn the phone on, and sometimes you need a battery pull and the ***** is hhhhhhoooottt.
I doubt theres a loose connection when it expands as the copper connections in the corner are pretty lines up and expanding would only make em touch more you would think.

[Q] Does rooting void the insurance?

tl,dr: dropped my rooted phone- it's dead. It's insured, but will the fact that it's rooted be a problem? Also tmo has a larger deductible- any advice for me on that?
I rooted my T-Mobile G2x and installed CM7 (and of course CWM) about 6 months ago. I've had insurance on it since I got it in April. I just dropped it from about 3 feet (fell off of my lap as I was exiting a coupe) and cracked the screen pretty significantly. It does not power on off of the battery. When I plug it in, the LG logo pops up, stays for about 3 seconds, and then the screen goes blank- the notification lights flash on and off, and then the process repeats. If I try to go into the bootloader, I hold down power + volume down, and the LG logo stays on for longer (maybe 9 seconds or so) and then it ultimately repeats the whole cycle. Interestingly, if I just have the phone plugged in with no battery, it doesn't do anything. It's as if it was just on the battery, or as if I wasn't mashing the power button.
So I have 2 questions:
A) Is there any problem with making an insurance claim on a rooted phone? If so, are there any steps that I can take to fix that? Is there any way to power it up enough to unroot it? I'd also like to get some pictures and the like off of it.
B) The deductible for this particular phone is $130. To me, that seems kind of obscene, since the phone goes for 199 normally. With 8 months of insurance at 6 bucks per month, that's $48 in insurance. That, plus $130 = $178, almost as much as the phone is with a new contract. I actually got my G2x for free because we left AT&T to come to T-Mobile, so- in my head, anyway- I have a hard time paying more for the replacement than I do for the phone initially. Does anyone have any advice for me on this? Is this fee negotiable or anything? Can the $130 be offset by $48?
What really gets me is that the same phone: the Optimus 2X, has a replacement fee of $40! It's the same phone, except that it has the keyboard gestures that I was hoping would be in the G2x. There's no way to get one of those instead, right?
I'm on vacation right now, and so I won't be home for 3 more days- I'll take it into T-Mo then. But is there anything else that I can try in the meantime? I've tried booting into recovery, but that didn't work, and I can't think of anything else to try. I might just try to leave the battery out overnight. For some reason that sort of thing has worked for me in the past with other phones.
EDIT: Never mind- I got it turned back on! Apparently when I dropped it, somehow one of the contact points for the battery was compressed. With a pencil I pulled it back out and it works. Now I just have to make an insurance claim on the screen =D (Which, apparently, I can do without un-rooting)
Err guess I should have read the whole post
Unfortunately tmobile/asurion's deductible is non negotiable. I know what they will say, since you prolly aren't due for upgrade, the cost of the phone to you right now is 499.
As for not powering on, not sure, but if the issue was just with the screen, I'd replace the screen myself, but not all sure what your situation is
Also, yes, you absolutely can process insurance on a rooted device

Ah good, that's very comforting. At the very worst, I pay 130 bucks and everything is back to normal (minus the pictures!)
I understand, from a business perspective, that they can say that the full price would be 499. That makes sense- I just don't like it! I should have been more careful, I suppose. It just broke so easily! Gorilla glass, indeed...
Thanks for the reply- I'm glad that I can get it replaced for sure!
I'd really like to be able to use the phone, even with a broken screen, for the remainder of the trip- you can't think of anything else I should try to get it to turn on?
EDIT: nvm, I got it (editing first post)

Htc One x Burning hot

i put my htc one x to charge and it didnt want to so i checked the charger and it turned off then it got scorching hot and started to vibrate on its own I opened it too see if i could remove battery but battery is difficult to remove so it finally stup vibrating but I am to scared to try to turn it on I left it by the fan so it would cool down. I have no warranty I bought it on the street it was working excellently I have the box and everything. What should I do?
Edit: My cellphone is dead doesnt charge or turn on. Computer doesnt recognize it I just lost $400.00. What should I do I am not the original owner so I cant go to at&t What are my options?
Uh...your first mistake was "opening" the phone. Our phones are not meant to be cracked open...
Maybe something shorted out and caused your battery to overheat like crazy
In my opinion, it sounds like you're out of luck, but wait until other people respond to see what they say.
this phone is relatively easy to open and there are no seal except on the inside screws
I am desperate dont know what to do i have a 400 dollar paper wieght
Device has a 1 year warranty. Are you on at&T? If so call them. They will replace it. If not call htc.
I bought it on craiglist used like for a 2 weeks used and i dont have reciept what should I do Help me i know there are other people whod have had this problem before. i think htc will ask me for receipt
Nobody cares where you bought it. The warranty covers the device. I'll say it again. If you are on at&t call them. They handle warranty claims for you period.
i use this phone on simple mobile prepaid i never have had at&t
In that case call htc. You still have a warranty.
I read the instruction in the box and it says the warranty is for first owner only

You can still try. A 10 minute phone call is worth not losing $400, right? Don't mention that you're not the first owner unless they actually ask.

New phone, dead battery charge

Bought a new Nexus S from ebay, it came today, I tried turning it on straight out of the box but no luck. So I figure it came with a dead battery that needs some charging, I let it charge for an hour and try again, no luck.
How long does it normally take for a new phone thats never been charged to power up?
I'm beginning to worry because when I touch the charger and the phone, neither are hot or even warm.
Mine powers on immediately after a dead battery once it's hooked up to the charger. Was there a battery icon when you plugged it in? Is it possible to find another charger to rule out a bad charger?

Nexus S has no LED. Its just a battery icon that'll pop up on the screen. You can score a battery pretty cheap online. Try that and if that fails, get a refund.

Thanks I'll try that, but do any stores sell smart phone batteries like maybe Sprint, Besbuy, etc? That way I can pick one up today, and not wait days just for a battery to ship.
Have no clue. Best buy might possibly sell them. Not too sure though. I haven't purchased a smartphone accessory from a retail store in a long time.

Guess what? It turned on!
All Saturday I was asking different retail stores if they sold that type of battery but nope or it was like $50+ WTF? So I was leaning on getting one from ebay, but I decided to research and found some crazy idea on youtube.
Hot wired my battery! It actually worked wow.
I don't know if this is a permanent solution so I'll just order a backup battery just for insurance.
Thanks Chronos for all your responses.

[Q] Can't get replacement battery to work

So the original battery in my Nexus 5 is swelling at the bottom and has popped my case off, it still works fine and doesn't even get warm but I know it's dangerous so I ordered an OEM replacement off eBay. Yes yes I know eBay is risky but this is the first time I've ever had an issue with any battery or anything off of eBay and when I order batteries off eBay I make sure they're from the US only to lessen the risk.
Anyways I got my replacement battery and put it in but nothing happens. I tried charging overnight, holding the power button 10+ seconds, holding power + volume down 10+ seconds, turning the phone on with the old battery then putting the new battery in as fast as I could (I was out of ideas) but no luck. When the replacement is in I can't get it to turn on, not even the power off-battery charging screen. I told the guy my issues and he sent out a replacement and told me to not worry about returning the old one but... it's the same deal with this replacement. My charger is fine, my USB cord is fine, my houses power outlets are fine, there is nothing I can do on that end to fix things, my phone just seems like it either doesn't see the battery or refuses to accept the battery. I've examined both the replacement batteries and they are identical to my old battery with exception of some numbers, no spelling errors or knock off brand symbols. The biggest difference is on the back my old battery it says Sony but on the two replacements it says LG.
So can anyone give me a suggestion before I ask this guy for a refund and have to deal with returning these batteries?
Pictures are of the two replacements next to each other.
It's just a dud, sellers are usually cool and resend easily because of that. They usually ship about 25 - 40% so once you connect the proper components and hit that power button you should automagically profit.

Looks like I'm going for the refund then... you'd think if you sell batteries you'd keep them taken care of or at least test them before shipping. I can understand one bad one but not two in a row.
Agreed, some sellers just leave stuff in bins until ordered. If your third one doesn't work, I'd check your connections. Obviously your logic board worked before you replaced battery right?

Well, seeing as his old battery works fine, except for it having bulged - I'd say these batteries were stored in harsh conditions or something that rendered them useless...
Your only other resort, sadly, is to order one from a different seller... hopefully you get your issue fixed!

Yeah the phone is fine, I'm typing on it now with my old battery installed back in it. I was just hoping I wasn't doing something right and these batteries are good cause I really shouldn't be using this bulging one but it's hard to live without a phone these days. So it looks like I'm just going to ask for a refund and buy from another seller asap.
So just to give an update to everyone I ordered from another USA seller on eBay and now it's working. I have a feeling it may be a knock off battery though because the battery life is horrible, there's no info printed on the back like my original battery, and every once and awhile taking a picture will make my phone shut off and not turn on without plugging it into a charger. But this will hold me off for now, sadly I may be looking for a newer phone since I already want a bigger screen and newer phones seem to have better battery time (though the Nexus 5 was never known for awesome battery life).
Just an FYI for anyone that reads this while shopping for a battery, do NOT buy from "xcentrikgroup" on eBay. He sells duds and will take weeks to refund your money.
