i have been getting some random shut downs but only when plugged in to a wall charger. at first i figured it was due to heat while being charged. but the phone could shut down while plugged into the wall at any given time no matter how much charge there is or how long it's been plugged. Last night I plugged it in before bed at 30% and today I woke up at 44% with the phone off. Sometimes it's minutes until it shuts down and sometimes it's hours. It's the same on any Rom/Kernel I tried. Thinking it may be a hardware issue. Any ideas? Thanks.
Currently Trigger2X 14 - Faux SV 3.5
Happens to me too... I'm on stock though.
And is it me or does charging the phone off seem to be ineffective?

which makes me believe this is strictly hardware. its not really like the software related reboots of the past. too bad i can't get it to go while plugged into pc, otherwise i could check logs to see what was up. let me know if you can recreate like clockwork. thx
Its hardware trust me. I've had in total like 6 g2xs and this is the first I've had with the issue.. I also have another now.. Both have the same rom, baseband, kernel and apps. Yet my new one shuts down on the charger.... Its hardware for sure and a replacement is in route. No point trouble shooting its a bad phone.. Threes many good ones just be patient... Now to wait for replacement...
If your on your 6th G2x, did you have to pay the 20 dollar exchange fee or whatever it's called? It would get pretty expensive after your 3rd or so G2x.

no. Bought first one full price it had no issues but dust, return no fee, then I exchanged again from pixel, no fee. Thats 3. Then I sold it for a sensation. Had bad luck with the sensation so I sold traded it on CL for a G2x and cash. Well that g2x was awesome too. so thats 4. I then dropped that ***** hard and had to exchange for another no fee again because I paid 130 through asurion. Thats 5. that g2x is awesome too. Now on a new line of service I got a free g2x with a online deal, so theres 6. Thats the one Im on now and it sucks donkey doooo.
but ive had enough to know there are good ones with no issues. I knew this one was gonna have issues cause of the ratio of no issues vs hearing issues here. LoL time to hunt for the good one again. LOL then after this I got to get the other g2x replaced again cause it was dropped again, and I cant have that. So Asurion that will be.....
Wow. Asurion must love you! LOL!
Last time I gave T-Mobile support a call, they wanted 20 bucks.
But that's a lot of G2x's my friend. And how much cash did you add on top to get the Sensation?

Oh and only 270 for sensation used upgrade.
This sounds like a defective battery. If your phone was plugged in at 30%, then you slept all night and woke up to a 44% charge with the phone powered down, that means that the battery was not taking any incoming charge for the vast majority of the night, nor does it seem that the battery was powering the phone for the majority of the night. Charging from 30->100% should only take 2.5 hours or so - maybe 3.
It could be that when you plug it in, it heats up - and thus expands. This could cause a loose connection to the battery somewhere (maybe something as simple as the physical contacts for the battery, or could be something more intricate inside the phone).
As much as you don't want to hear it, i'd say you'll probably need to take it to a store or send it in for replacement.

Thats my thought. It's still plugged in but does not charge. Forgot to mention that it requires a battery pull to restart. So possibly the phone is not really off, just in a non responsive idle state. Im going back to stock for now to see if that changes anything. I know they will ask if I got the update so I might as well. Thanks for the info.

Half the time its off, and half in a non responsive idle state. Cause sometimes you can turn the phone on, and sometimes you need a battery pull and the ***** is hhhhhhoooottt.
I doubt theres a loose connection when it expands as the copper connections in the corner are pretty lines up and expanding would only make em touch more you would think.

i have my g2x rooted and running great the only problem is battery life i went from a full charge to 65 percent in about 2 and a half hrs! with just sending a few texts and chatting on skype for about 10 min, i called tmobile and here are my options i can wait till may 5th and they can just send me a battery or i can take it back and risk getting a defective one! I have never had any random reboots or freezing so far! except when i deleted some tmobile bloatware i got a couple fc's and had to restart then everything was fine! what should i do?
What processes are running in the background? Which task killer app are you running with what kill frequency?

why would you have to wait until may 5th for a replacement of a defective item. and it is defective if you do the right thing with it let it drain all the way than fully charge a couple times.
I have an up time off charger for 22 hours now some texting , some messing with phone a couple calls. and still at 67% intentially testing to see how it did. in mainly standby with minimal use. when i get my hdmi cord tommorow ill start pushing it . want to make sure it doesnt over heat or burn up like some report.
But by may 5th the 2 weeks will be up and if its something other than the battery it will be more difficult to get replaced. a year warrenty at least and if you have insurance with tmobile it covers everything that is a phone defect with no deductable(i was told) so just more of a pain.
keep doing what ever your doing run that puppy until it dies and recharge leave on for 2 hours after it says its charged and see if its any better. if not id look more into why you have to wait for may 5th to get a replacement.
After clearing all the crap off the phone, I left mine on most of the day. After eight hours comprised of about and hour talking, a fair mount of browsing the web, etc, and most of it with wifi calling active, I'm at 50%.
nothing really i use auto killer memory to close what ever i open
i have tried the drain the battery all the way down and they still didnt work! i tried the reset the phone as well i guess i will take it back, one question tho do i have to unroot and return the tmobile apps for them to take it back?

I would love to be able to get that kind of battery life lol...are you doing anything special for that?
I think the top part goes really fast and it will take a long time to get from 50% to 0. Also, it's just in the first few days I think it will act a little differently after a few charges.
edit: why are you guys using taskkillers or autokiller?

I was going to ask the same thing. Wouldn't this make the battery worse, if anything?
do i have to unroot and return the tmobile apps for them to take it back? please let me know
I'm also considering returning it but first I will wait for few days and see if it gets better. However I was wondering, what is tmobile's return policy for off contract phones? Is it true that you can return it anytime within a month?

Yes you do. Rooting voids any warranty you have on the device.

That's correct but I would still imagine that rooting your phone could void this in the same way it voids any warranty.
Had the g2x since launch day, loved the speed, size, etc. Never had a single reboot (actually did once or twice while charging in the first few days), screen bleed and had fairly good battery life to boot with fairly heavy usage. What more can you ask for, right?
So fast forward to today...i was in the middle of typing a text and battery died, I was at 1%. So I plug it in, turn it on and then it got really hot and non stop rebooting only while on the charger. Taking it off the charger would stop the reboots, plug it in again reboot cycle again within minutes (no sound to warn me its rebooting, no start up animation).
Eventually when it was on the charger the battery icon looked really weird, it was completely white with 2 circular arrows in it, never seen that before, anyone know what that means.
After a while the phone cooled down and has now been charging for he last hour with no rebooting. I did call Tmo and they are sending me a new battery and handset.
I am unsure what to do, keep mine since it appears to be fine now or keep the replacement items. I am not rooted completely stock with minimal apps installed.
I really, really dont feel like setting up all my prefs again and reinstalling apps. One thing is for sure i am seriuosly considering the HTC sensation now. Had the MT4G before and it was great, so my perception of HTC is high.

im kind of in the same boat as the op but not as bad on the overheating. how do i get a new battery? i bought from amazon and its past the return period.
My opinion of LG is really low. First the sd card slot died on my Optimus T and then numerous problems with my returned G2x. I hate to say it, but the grass is definitely greener on the HTC side right now. I will be checking out the sensation if permaroot happens.
yup, mine did the same thing. all was good for a month or so then boom my battery just freaked out. I wrestled with it a few days then last night it went from 100% - 0% in 6hrs while powered off. It's the battery. Get a new one.
Mine doesn't reboot...it just shuts off. Won't turn back on until I yank the battery. Only issue happens like once a day. But ill point out I'm now pissed Droid x gets gb Friday and I'm still using froyo...granted.by choice because I refuse to use a leak.

Not to change subject here but permaroot doesn't do much if the bootloader is locked. Gaining root doesn't mean custom roms or mods. You'll be able to use Titanium Backup but so what.
Also, back on topic. There are lots of reports that the batteries are bad and if it is over heating I'd definatly replace it.
Tmo sent me a replacement G2x after I thought I fried mine. I fixed it eventually by flashing several CWM recoveries. The replacement had nasty screen bleed. Needless-to-say I sent the replacement packing.
I was using my phone all day yesterday like usual I let my battery die all the way before charging again and today for some reason my battery is dying quickly.
Took off the charger at 6 am and it is now 11am and I have only 50% usually I have 70% or so. I hope my battery is not crapping out on me... I guess Ill find out in the next few days maybe this is just a fluke... I hope...

I am on my third G2x. From the day I received the last one(3 weeks ago) it has been rock solid(NO reboots-no screen freezes- no dropping data connections). Two days ago I bought a router and decided to use wifi in my home. Since hooking it up and running the G2X on it I find that I have reboots-screen freezes and oh yes data connection dropped (numerous times)I guess the wifi is just not meant for this phone. 3 weeks of happy usage and bam!! wifi in the house. I have also had apps changing settings without my doing so( never happened before wifi usage<) Also now the Gps is even worse than before.Been running it without the wifi and still getting the same issues now. Oh how I wish I had just stopped after the second one and asked for refund. This could (and probably will be eventually) a super super phone. I just don't know if I have the patience to wait . I just ordered an Asus Transformer which will be here on 5/31/11, maybe playing with it will soften my stance on how I view the G2x at this moment. Anyone else had the wifi situation?
I'm rooted with cwm. I have random freezes but it appears to only be random kernels. As well as only certain versions of android. Once the gb update comes out, I'm sure alot of our problems will clear up...

I Baught the infuse on launch day off a friend of a friend of mine that was elgible for an upgrade. I gave him the money for the phone plus $100 for himself for doing it. The phone has been really hot the last few days. Yesterday it was at or around 100 Degrees F after i started using it (very light use). Last night when charging it took over 7 hours to fully charge. I turned screen brightness all the way down, have underclocked the processor to 800MHZ, what else can i do? Today the thing died on me in 3.5 hours and i didnt even use it... The screen was on for a total of 15 minutes. It was at about 105 degrees all day... i tried to contact the person who sold it to me to see if they could meet me at the store to try to return it for another unit, to make a long story short im unable to get ahold of them at all so im out of luck. What can i do? Is it possible to return to at&t without the reciept? I doubt it. I dont think the problem is the battery however, Ive take the battery out and its nice and cool, the hot area seems to be the metalic part covering the sim card right underneath the camera area thats hot. I can try to buy another battery but i dont think the issue is the battery. Im not sure what to do at this point. Any ideas on how i can cool the phone down? Or get a replacement unit?
It sounds like you have something running in the background that is forcing your processor to run at maximum speed (and voltage) all the time.
Try a menu->settings->factory data reset and dont install anything but updates, report back if it still gets hot.
Widget locker is being reported to cause issues fyi.
Might try contacting samsung. Maybe a battery problem. But sounds more like what previous poster said Runaway proceser

look in settings about phone for battery use. post results. it may be a bad app, it may be the radio needs to be reset. the radio's can put off as much as or more heat than the processor. if it says cell radio 50% then you just need to enter airplane mode and then turn airplane mode off.

What wall charger are you using? The correct specs wall charger for the phone shouldn't give you the choice menu for mass storage,... etc. It should just charge.
I found that if I used the wrong type of wall charger(even car charger) the battery would get very warm. Using the charger that came with the phone doesnt do this.
I think the phone seems to go into a usb mode but gets way more current than expected.
I would call samsung, they will honor their warranty, regardless of who purchased the device.
I had problem with htc inspire, which I have bought on Ebay and I obviously didnt have a receipt for it.
To make a long story short I took it to att and they have replaced it for me no questions asked.
I said I have bought it from a private party.
I'm hoping that all of the responses of guys here at forum helped You, but if not remember, to try Your last resource which is att warranty department.
But I would personally go to corporate store not call them.
When You buy anything warranty usually stays with the device not the owner.
I believe, there is stubborn application running in the background, have You tried taskiller?
Good Luck!
My fiance is having problems with her phone randomly rebooting. I just updated it to the most recent firmware update, so that shouldn't be the problem, but something obviously is. She wasn't getting much out of her battery life either, usually only a couple hours or so.
What can I do about it to keep her from spending money we don't have on a new phone, other than root it? She won't let me root it and set it up like mine, mostly because she's stubborn.

It looks like she's even got to pull the battery to get the thing to start back up when it shuts down. The charging port seems loose to me, but it charges the battery just fine so I'm not sure that's part of the problem.

I put her battery in my phone for the day, and it just shut down, so that was part of the problem.

I think she uses her phone a LOT for facebook and texting, but 4 hours still seems awfully short for battery life

I figured out what I think was wrong with her other battery. The contacts were set too deep inside the battery casing, so any bump at the wrong angle caused them to lose connection. That's why I don't trust second hand batteries, no matter how good other people say they are.
Both her original battery and my original battery work perfectly fine in my phone, both give me a day and a half. So I know it's not the batteries, it's something wrong with her phone.
Heck, I even offered to switch phones with her, and she said she didn't want mine even though it's exactly the same phone and even newer.

yeah, I know. Doesn't change much when it comes to problem phones other than the fact that you absolutely have to go to a Sprint owned repair center and not a store run by another company. That's where the distance factor comes in and the working with tech support to convince them it's too far to drive lol
Okay, not sure if this is even possible to do but I'm hoping the XDA'ers might be able to assist. I purchased a new battery for my Nexus S. I plugged the bad-boy in and try turning it on and nothing. I plug it into the wall and try turning it on-- nothing. I try putting the old battery back in.........nothing.....
I then noticed the new battery I purchased is a 1440 mAh and the old battery is 1500 mAh. This is probably something I should have checked before I bought it, and something that now makes me feel like a total idiot. What I'm wondering is could this have a hand in bricking my phone? Is there any way of fixing it? Luckily I have a Nexus 4 on the way (eventually ¬.¬) but I was planning on giving the Nexus S to my girlfriend.
Thanks in advance, guys.
No. This is totally tolerable. +-5% is the least that might cause trouble. Well within tolerances. Charge overnight and if no good then return for replacement.

Thanks for the quick reply. The issue is that even the old battery which was at ~75% life isn't even working, even while plugged in.
Can't help much, but just so you can be at ease, mah stands for milli-amp hours, and is a measure of capacity, not power put forth. You want to match the voltage to prevent damage.
At least I've got a Nexus 4 on the way. It just sucks that I can't give this Nexus S to my girlfriend, she's stuck with an iPhone 3G =/
As an update, I had it plugged in overnight and still nothing. I had the original battery in.

I'm just thinking you shorted it. It seems to be happening a lot lately in the Nexus S forums when people pull their battery. Haven't seen anyone able to fix it themselves, they usually send it for repair to Samsung. :/

That's unfortunate because mine is out of warranty now. Thanks for the help, hopefully I can dispute it with Amazon and at least get the cost of the battery back.

Get in touch with Samsung or even your phone company. You could be surprised at what they have to offer. I've heard of some people getting absolutely free fixing from Samsung (albeit not specifically the Nexus S) when out of warranty.
