tl,dr: dropped my rooted phone- it's dead. It's insured, but will the fact that it's rooted be a problem? Also tmo has a larger deductible- any advice for me on that?
I rooted my T-Mobile G2x and installed CM7 (and of course CWM) about 6 months ago. I've had insurance on it since I got it in April. I just dropped it from about 3 feet (fell off of my lap as I was exiting a coupe) and cracked the screen pretty significantly. It does not power on off of the battery. When I plug it in, the LG logo pops up, stays for about 3 seconds, and then the screen goes blank- the notification lights flash on and off, and then the process repeats. If I try to go into the bootloader, I hold down power + volume down, and the LG logo stays on for longer (maybe 9 seconds or so) and then it ultimately repeats the whole cycle. Interestingly, if I just have the phone plugged in with no battery, it doesn't do anything. It's as if it was just on the battery, or as if I wasn't mashing the power button.
So I have 2 questions:
A) Is there any problem with making an insurance claim on a rooted phone? If so, are there any steps that I can take to fix that? Is there any way to power it up enough to unroot it? I'd also like to get some pictures and the like off of it.
B) The deductible for this particular phone is $130. To me, that seems kind of obscene, since the phone goes for 199 normally. With 8 months of insurance at 6 bucks per month, that's $48 in insurance. That, plus $130 = $178, almost as much as the phone is with a new contract. I actually got my G2x for free because we left AT&T to come to T-Mobile, so- in my head, anyway- I have a hard time paying more for the replacement than I do for the phone initially. Does anyone have any advice for me on this? Is this fee negotiable or anything? Can the $130 be offset by $48?
What really gets me is that the same phone: the Optimus 2X, has a replacement fee of $40! It's the same phone, except that it has the keyboard gestures that I was hoping would be in the G2x. There's no way to get one of those instead, right?
I'm on vacation right now, and so I won't be home for 3 more days- I'll take it into T-Mo then. But is there anything else that I can try in the meantime? I've tried booting into recovery, but that didn't work, and I can't think of anything else to try. I might just try to leave the battery out overnight. For some reason that sort of thing has worked for me in the past with other phones.
EDIT: Never mind- I got it turned back on! Apparently when I dropped it, somehow one of the contact points for the battery was compressed. With a pencil I pulled it back out and it works. Now I just have to make an insurance claim on the screen =D (Which, apparently, I can do without un-rooting)
Err guess I should have read the whole post
Unfortunately tmobile/asurion's deductible is non negotiable. I know what they will say, since you prolly aren't due for upgrade, the cost of the phone to you right now is 499.
As for not powering on, not sure, but if the issue was just with the screen, I'd replace the screen myself, but not all sure what your situation is
Also, yes, you absolutely can process insurance on a rooted device

Ah good, that's very comforting. At the very worst, I pay 130 bucks and everything is back to normal (minus the pictures!)
I understand, from a business perspective, that they can say that the full price would be 499. That makes sense- I just don't like it! I should have been more careful, I suppose. It just broke so easily! Gorilla glass, indeed...
Thanks for the reply- I'm glad that I can get it replaced for sure!
I'd really like to be able to use the phone, even with a broken screen, for the remainder of the trip- you can't think of anything else I should try to get it to turn on?
EDIT: nvm, I got it (editing first post)

i tried to repartition using heimdall, and i think i bricked my phone. it doesn't respond to anything -- 100% black screen.
should i even bother making a jig or is the wicked witch finally dead?
Why not try a jig?

Worth a shot, a pack of 100k resistors is 99c at radioshack, but I'd put my money on perma-bricked. In almost all cases (I actually have yet to hear of a single case where someone managed to recover from a black screen brick), a completely unresponsive phone, where pressing the power button does nothing, means that the phone has been paper-weighted.
You most likely destroyed your bootloader. If that's the case, your only options are to either buy a riff box and reflash the bootloader and firmware directly onto the chip via jtag, or mail it back to Samsung and let them do it.
Sorry to hear about your rotten luck, dude. Happens to everyone sooner or later :\
Provided that the phone is in good physical condition and none of the water strips have changed colors, Samsung should fix it up under warranty. They will even pick up the shipping. Give them a call.
yep, this thing is a solid brick. i've recovered from pretty horrific things (e.g. the battery falling out during a flash) but never had it completely unresponsive.
i'll try to get a replacement. maybe if i say "i flashed a bad bootloader" the service rep will go along with it .
edit: i had to dig out my iphone 2g to use in the meantime. 1) at&t reactivated my unlimited data plan. 2) i installed gingerbread on it. lolz.
LOL OK depressed seemded like a good word at the time. But really it seems further
in or lower especially with ny case on, same goes for the lower volume button. I guess from reboots. Would you try and get it replaced or just take the chance that it will continue to work?

They will replace it for you, just tell them that one of the buttons is no longer working. It's a warranty replacement, I had to get mine replaced because the vol- button wasn't even a button anymore and had to be jammed in to be "pressed".
I use the silicone case, so I don't have a problem with the button...

It really seems to be hit or miss. My first thunderbolt's buttons sucked. This one is great. I dropped mine in the **** bowl... :-(
Just replaced mine today for the same reason. It was that way out of the box. I checked everything on this one to make sure it was up to par before I walked out of the store this time. Every phone has its quirks, any one who says otherwise is jaded..
I kinda feel like an idiot for being so picky but I do have the warranty. I called on the phone and they said I had to go into the store. Guess it cant hurt to try atleast its under warranty until feb. of next year.
Mine is also "depressed" lol when they replaced it, did they give you a CLNR or a brand New tbolt?

Seriously?? I'm unrooting right now to send mine back. It takes all of 10 minutes. No slower than flashing ROMs.
It's a hardware defect 99.9% of the time. You're foolish to not take advantage of warranty replacement while you have it. Come on, man!!

If they'll do it in the store, sure, I'll get around to it. Sometime before April.

Call them up and tell them that it only works if you press it in with a pen, or if you basically use all your strength just to get it to register as a "push". You shouldn't have to do anything extra just to get your phone to turn on. They tell you to go to the store because they were some lazy ass rep who didn't want to do anything. Just call back, politely explain that it's almost impossible to turn your phone on because of the power button situation (throw in some good acting skills too), and that you would like a replacement as the phone is still under warranty. If they say no, ask to speak to a supervisor, explain again, and they will replace it for you.
Ok new phone on its way. He also said a new software update was coming today(lol). They are really limiting the time you used to have for returning the phone. Used to be 15 days I think and now down to 5 days.
They dont use fed ex they used usps hmm never seen that. Well the one I got was just as bad as the one I sent it so they are sending another one. I used to be able to use my case with it but these refurbs suck.
I picked up one of these off of a lady for $20; it was missing the back cover and battery, but it was in pretty decent cosmetic condition, so I figured I could sell the
parts to break even at worst, haha.
Anyway, I finally got a new battery yesterday, and the phone is acting funny.
So far I've noticed:
1. Microphone doesn't work. Any apps that use the microphone won't work either.
2. No sound whatsoever. Headphones, speaker, back speaker not a squeak.
3. It can't use flash because of the "cold weather." That just sounds silly, haha.
4. Camcorder immediately shuts off when I try to record. (Camera works perfectly though)
5. Won't charge. It will charge for about 20 seconds before it stops charging. The LED will then alternate between orange and green blinks.
6. Won't connect to the computer. This might just be a problem with the drivers, but the computer doesn't even seem to recognize its existence. The phone will "charge" though. (until the LED starts blinking)
7. Will shut off randomly. I usually don't notice when though.
8. Power button is often unresponsive, when waking the device up or even when booting up.
9.Genius Button Useless, although that might just be the microphone.
I first suspected water damage, but what I think is the indicator, the water sticker above the SD card slot, is white. However, I noticed a VOID sticker on the bottom left screw of the battery compartment.
Does anybody have any idea as to what the problem could be? Is it perhaps
software-based? Any suggestions at this juncture would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.
Hardware fault of some or many sorts.
For connecting to the computer, it may be set to charge only in settings, so then it wouldn't recognize it.
The white water indicator would turn pink or something if wet - so that's good.
The void sticker is good too - it's something HTC puts on a screw to tell if the device has been opened up.
If the void sticker isn't punched, and the water indicator is fine, then i'd suggest calling HTC and seeing about a warranty exhange.
Explain your problems, and that it's not wet and hasn't been taken apart, and they will tell you if the phone can be sent in based on the serial #.
It just might be in warranty period and they'll fix it for you.
Thanks for the suggestion, but I believe the warranty is not transferable. :-(
I think I'm just going to put it up on craigslist/ebay as-is. Seeing as
I paid so little, I'm sure to break even. 8 )
Thank you again!

The HTC warranty is by device.
I needed warranty service on a doubleshot that one of the LED lights died in. I was at least the third owner of the device for sure. I bought it from another developer who bought it secondhand from a person.
HTC fixed it and sent it back to me. All it cost me is shipping to get it there, they fixed the light for free, and sent it back to me at their expense.
The device is guaranteed against defects not your fault for a certain amount of time - doesn't matter who's hands it happens to be in when the problem occurs.
For the money you spent to get it, another couple of dollars in shipping to get a good, working phone, i'd at least call and see were I you.
Is that so? I actually read their warranty policy, and I must have
misunderstood the legal speak, haha.
Thank you again. I'll give them a ring right now..

OT, but it's of interest to me. Is that a panda trueno? or a panda painted s12? Either way, I approve! I own an S12 and I get asked all the time if it's a corolla...
If you can't get it fixed or sell it for any reason, I'd be happy to take it off your hands for more than you paid.
@silverton It's an AE86 yup. I don't actually own one though; they're money pits, haha. Drifter tax. My mother actually owned an S12 when she was pregnant with me. Apparently she was "accidentally" drifting and hit a wall. Must explain why I'm so messed up in the head. 8 )
It's a pity the S12 never got the aftermarket support the S13/S14 did/does. Beautiful car.
@IBTokin I actually managed to sell it on Ebay for nearly $140 yesterday,
but thank you anyway. (-:
So I think I have repaired my hardware until it is toast. A couple of weeks ago my screen cracked. I have repaired iPods and iPhones in the past so I felt confident ordering a new screen assembly (the whole deal, digitizer, LCD etc) and replacing it.
I put it all back together and it was running fine. I screwed up the front camera, but ordered another one.But I noticed that I hadn't totally closed the case and one of the clips wasn't closed. I pushed it shut and the connectivity on 3G (4G is spotty in my town) disappeared.
I opened it up and saw I had broken the 3G antenna. So I ordered another and replaced it. Still no signal most of the time. I talked to a guy at the Cell Phone repair shop and he suggested to get another antenna. So I did.
When it arrived yesterday I replaced the front camera and the antenna.
NOW
still no connectivity
AND
the unit will not stay on without external power. It powers up fine and says no power and shuts down. The battery icon shows no power and charging, but does not charge and shuts down the moment it is unplugged. The unit was running at about 50% power when I replaced the camera and antenna.
So any suggestions? I figure if I ship it to LG, they are going to laugh and say "No Warranty for You!" but I don't come up for a new subsidized phone for two months.
Sprint, Nexus 5, stock.
Maybe instead of talking to the guy at the cell phone repair shop, just give it to him. No one can advise without hands on...

He has never had his hands on a Nexus 5, and was hesitant to speak with any authority on either issue.
I just was seeing if either problem was one of those things people with experience breaking down the N5 would go "yeah it does that unless you do x and y."
OK well you need to give it to A professional. Any other mobile repair shop. "it could be x" just leads to you spending more money on stuff it isn't so my advice is get a professional assessment and don't take any "could be" from here

This post is part of the last ditch attempt to troubleshoot before I try and get Sprint to let me get a subsidized phone early. I figured that somehow it all went FUBAR.
Thanks for the advice.

Apparently at least the battery issue is software related. I did a factory reset (couldn't hurt at this point) and the whole time during the reset and wipe (several minutes) the battery worked fine. The moment it booted into KitKat, I get the shutting down no power screen. After some experimenting, I notice it will stay on fine in recovery mode, into android and it shuts down.
I am googling, but open to suggestions.
So does anybody have this problem on verizon?
I changed 2 phones with Asurion and both have this problem.
Is it software or hardware issue?
I don't know what to do
I have the edge from Verizon. I do not use the fast charger. This may not be relevant to the issue at all. But I usually charge my phone every night while turned off using a standard slow charger. When I first unplug the charger I can see the faint glow of the camera LED. Bye the time I'm finished getting ready in the morning the glow is gone. So sometime within a half an hour it stops on mine. After it goes out I cannot see it at all until I recharge it again. Not sure if there's a fix for it or not.

Well you also don't want one where the flash is always on. You will have to keep trading it til you get one that works. Who cares if it's a refurb. A refurb will probably be free of these kind of bugs anyways. You could also use the samsung warranty and send it in to them to fix. But that is what a refurb is anyways. A fixed unit. Not sure why you are so turned off by the idea of a refurbished unit. I could understand if it looked like it's been in someone's pocket for 2 years but if what you get is indistinguishable between a new and a refurbished one than who cares. As long as it functions the way you expect it to.
Ok, they told me that they will send new one. I just hope so that that one will not have problem. Because it will be third phone from asurion I am getting and there is no way to call them one more time. I am feeling bad about that, it's Samsungs mistake not theirs.

Just in case :*I encountered the same problem on my device (French provider Orange Galaxy S6). Yesterday I flashed the most recent Samsung stock ROM*I could find (G920FXXU1AOD9 ), and things seems to be better now. After I use the flash, it now turns off, although quite slowly (it gets dimmer and dimmer until it is completely off). I would not say it is fixed, but it is a lot better than before, when it would stays lightly lit during at least several hours...
Finally the problem is back after a factory reset. Third replacement needed. Just great.
I have the same issue. I noticed it at 5AM a few mornings ago. I woke up and it was still dark in my room so I clearly saw that it was dimly lit. Very upset about this issue. Why is it an Asurion issue if it's a warranty issue, shouldn't Verizon just send a "new" s6 to you? Ideally, I'd like to trade it in for the same one, but in gold, which is what I wanted to begin with.
