I heard that RAM memory can be increase through SWAP
But I don't know how to...
Can anyone please explain it ?

Just so you know swap partitions are very slow and can have a significant impact on the life of your SD card or internal memory, depending on where you put the partition. I know more RAM sounds like a good idea, but make sure to read the whole guide so you can a better feel for the cons of this procedure. Your phone might not even be noticeably faster afterwards.
You can put more RAM inside of your phone if you are so inclined. Just buy some RAM off NewEgg or your retailer of choice (DDR4 is really fast!). Once you get the RAM pop the back off your phone. Inside you will see a large black box with the word Liion written on it. Do not worry, this is not actual lion, nor is it a lion egg. Just take that out. Using scissors or another sharp implement, cut the RAM down to the size of that black box. Simply put that RAM inside of your phone and you are done! Some people like to solder it in place, but that is mostly just to cut down on rattle noise. Note, that soldering your phone is actually quite dangerous. I chose to solder mine, and my phone no longer boot after. But, it was still pretty cool to have 4GB of RAM in my phone.

I was being serious with my advice in the first paragraph. However, until they invent wireless RAM you can safely ignore the second paragraph.

Just ignore what I said before, I was kidding around a bit so I am sure it got confusing.
Simply put, adding a swap partition to your phone is probably not going to speed it up. Some users commenting on that guide with complaints that their phone is slower after enabling swap. This is not surprising. SDcards are many times slower than RAM. Thus anytime your phone actually uses the swap partition it can get incredibly sluggish. If you want to try out a swap partition, awesome! Just go follow the guide. It can be a fun learning experience. But, do not get your hopes up. Like zerofighter1 said, a new phone is probably necessary if you want to enjoy the effects of more RAM.

RAM is usually only an issue with older phones, but more often than not its not the only issue. I remember I experimented with swap back in my Fascinate (VZW Galaxy S variant) days, and that was because the VZW variant shipped with 384MB of RAM as opposed to 512MB on every other GS1 variant.
Several phones later, hours of reading, and enormous amounts more experimenting with Android not only on my phone, but rooting/flashing friends' phones too, I can tell you that if you're considering swap, you should really buy a new phone. Maybe that's not an option for you based on budget restrictions, however if that's the case I would recommend that spending time on XDA posting about hugely outdated software mods could be better spent working/advancing your career, but I digress.
More objectively, you're going to get better performance out of A) flashing newer versions of android which handle RAM swapping better and B) mild overclocking. Moderate to severe overclocking could gain you better performance yields but not for what you will sacrifice in battery life respectively. Hope this helps.

I think we need to rally as a community against samsung and att for lying about the memory in the captivate.
Sounds like a waste of money. They never said 512MB FREE FOR YOU TO TOTALLY USE!
Or else every Android phone and their companies should get sued.
A lot of your memory is being used by the OS, system cache and more. Have you ever really ran out of memory? I haven't.
Android is basically designed to never run out of memory; as it stores all programs in memory to load faster - it also ends "not in use" programs as soon as more RAM is needed for a new application.
When I buy something and it says it has "such and such" RAM, I never expect to be able to actually use it all. I sure wish OS's and hardware didn't need RAM to run.... and besides, 300 Megs free for personal use is more than enough for a hand held device to run. Even if I loaded my entire list of apps into the ram I would still have room.
Surely the first post was "tongue in cheek"

You will never have 300 megs for "personal use." A fresh kill of all apps gives me 123MBs free. I run out of memory all the time. Just today I was using the youtube app and browser and it totally locked up until I manually closed some programs.
Being that pc manufacturers have been doing this for years with on board video (and they even double do by starting the ram and the vram), you would never have a chance.

Did Samsung/ATT ever say that you would have 512MB of memory available to the user? If they did then I think you might have a case. But considering that Samsung went as far as creating videos explaining why the GT-I9000 doesn't show the whole 512MB (http://bit.ly/djxJ3r - guessing similar videos exist for the US variants), I don't think you'd stand a chance. Unless some sales rep. lied his/her way into a commission.
If you want something to go after them for, go after them for unreliable and often non-functional GPS that was not advertised as a crippled feature.
Even then, I would recommend waiting for the official Froyo release to give them enough chance to get a formal effort out there. I tend to think the OTA update that went out was more to turn off features AT&T doesn't want us to have for free (tethering) than it was a GPS fix. I hold the opinion that the GPS part was more of their work in progress that they tossed in there to get folks to want to give up their free tethering.

With the way people complain and want to sue over everything nowadays it's really hard to tell. Sarcasm truly is lost when typed.
lol its just advertising, while it mte not be entirely true, they are still covered..
Nowhere in the OS (Eclair OR Froyo) does it ever break down memory that totals the 512MB mentioned on the packaging. In all versions I've used the total amount of memory available has been in the 300MB range. I understand on an intellectual level that the OS and other vital functions need to reside in some memory so it may not ever be "free," but I'd like to be assured by the software that that memory IS in fact being allocated and is not just a fictional number made up by Samsung advertising. for all I know the Captivate COULD only have the 300-ish MB that it claims and the OS uses up a portion of that. Also, there has got to be something fishy going on, because before 2.2, Android could NOT utilize 512MB of RAM, and from my understanding, would not even be able to display it had more then that. If this is true, then why is Froyo showing that it's using the same amount of the 300MB free that Eclair used? wouldn't it have SOME amount more free than the eclair version?
Either there is a bug with the memory (display or usage), or the Captivate does not have the memory it was advertised to have.

Perhaps my first estimate was incorrect, but I just did a task kill and got 200 of my 305 available free, so I will correct myself and say 200 for "personal use" which I still think is more than enough. I have never had the browser crash except when trying to play flash games and I have never run out of memory, even when pausing playing a 720p video to check a flash heavy website, load up a few hundreds texts, and browse the gallery to show people pictures. I think android manages the memory quite well.
Other phones like the nexus 1 have the full 512mb available as advertised & have had it available on both 2.1 & 2.2 why is this different for us galaxy s users? Does it even say anywhere official that it is supposed to have 512mb it doesn't say that anywhere on the box or in anywhere in the included text or on att's website or samsungs. It doesn't say it doesn't either. I know this sounds disappointing but lets face the facts this phone isn't all that it was hyped up to be. Not to mention that it also claims it has gps but I have tried everything & have still never been able to lock on to a satellite for more than a couple of seconds.

Where is the lie? My phone is spec'd at having 512mb of RAM and 16GB flash memory. I have that.
Does your phone have something different?
If it does, you should return it and ask for a replacement or get a refund. What would a lawsuit accomplish? Were you harmed? Did the phone catch fire in your pocket due to this defect?
I bet Jackie Childs would take this case.

Where in the OS does it tell you that you have 512MB of RAM?
I don't post unless absolutely necessary, but this thread has irritated me beyond the point.
How about, instead of whining about a memory problem when all that has been used on this phone so far is Eclair (no himem) and a LEAKED super-beta may-not-even-be-close-to-release Froyo, you either:
A) Stop trying to get a rise out of a community. Honestly, if we had as many hands on deck as we do cattle around here, the Captivate would be ::the:: phone to have, with many ROMs, mods, apps, etc.
B) Return your Captivate and never come back here again. No one misses whiners.
C) Actually understand that the reason why you dont see that much RAM is because the physical chip is 512MB RAM. Its not for you to use, and you could consider yourself lucky that a phone with as high of specs it has, just might have to use more RAM! I suggest you read RyanZA's thread on RFS and to explain to yourself how FSYNC and its security checks work with RAM.
D) I'm done. If you want to flame me about it, go ahead. But I'm sick and tired of people purchasing a phone then whining about it and threatening the lawyers when SOME people are perfectly content with this phone just how it is. Honestly. Go get an iPhone4 or wait for a Samsung Tab, or go get a Dell Streak and put Eclair on it. Just STOP whining.
No wonder the devs don't want to do work for this smartphone.
Good god..

It doesn't say it in the OS - but that doesn't mean it isn't there.
I guess the teardown sites could be fooled, and Samsung could be lying to everyone.
The most logical explanation to me, is that the 512MB is there - I don't think we have a 300ish MB chip.
if I should return this phone or not.
I am coming from the old MT3G, so this is a serious upgrade for me, and I am loving every thing about it, except the memory issue for the apps.
I know that the LG Optimus g2X is probably coming out this month on Tmo, and probably could get on that instead.
I am trying to get everyones opinion on this ... just to get the pros and cons of this compared to that of the LGs.
Would appreciate if you guys can give me your input......
EDIT:
Also, is it possible to return it rooted? Do I need to reload all the bloatware I deleted?
I like the phone, but I cannot recommend over the mytouch 4g. I have both.
+ The screen is amazing, and a huge selling point
+ Takes some of the best HD video ive ever experienced on a mobile phone
+ Snappy phone, no real issues as far of everyday use. It truely is a great phone.
+ Data speeds are very good
- The cheezyness of touchwiz UI and the extreme bloatware
- Totally nerfed the memory, combined with bloatware I only had like 400mb of memory available, why samsung?
-/+ no Flash on Camera, sorry. Camera performs well, but video is very good. Actually takes half decent pics in dim lighting. But having the option for flash would help, again..why samsung?
Other little things with the stock rom, like the browser not able to load in desktop mode and the very well hidden mobile hotspot are annoying but im sure will be resolved with custom Roms.
This phone couldve been a home run, but samsung only trades off some luxuries hardwarewise. The shipping software is tragic, but XDA im sure will come to the rescue. So with that...im keeping it.

i've worked a couple of refurb centers for cell phones and you can return a phone to them with a full custom rom on it if you want. they don't care. they just replace hardware and plastics as necessary and EVERY phone gets plugged in and returned to a factory image. with that in mind... don't tell customer support anything over the phone that would prevent them from setting you up for a phone swap. lol
as for the phone's app issue... not really an issue if you have a moderate understanding of android and know how to move apps to external sd. all in all the phone is great... i recommend it. improved sound and video recording over the original Vibrant. i still have my original Vibrant so i compare them off and on. drastic improvements in some areas such as GPS. no change in others.

I definitely want to give this one a try, as said coming from the old MT3G, this is a good upgrade, snappy fast. Yes apps can be handled using the app2sd etc, but if waiting for a few more days or weeks will get me a phone where this is not going to be a tradeoff, then I keep thinking that it might be worth waiting.

The only one I think I wanna wait for is the LG phone, since its to be, APPARENTLY, original android etc and it might have the 1 or 2 GB space for apps. Of course its dual core etc, and might get ginerbread much earlier then the samsung.
The drawback on the LG is the screen resolution. And we dont know how the battery life is going to be on it or any other issues.

Extreme bloatware? Have you seen a Epic 4G stock... now that is extreme bloatware compared to this.
Additionally, DoubleTwist AirSync is $5, so yeah I guess it's bloatware if you don't use it, but otherwise it's a bonus.
Honestly, I still don't understand everyone's complaint about internal memory. Move the app to the 16gb SD they provided.
Additionally, I was going to get the Nexus S but then I found out it has 16gb internal but no microSD support. I like the ability to change my storage space.
I am also coming from a My Touch 3g (3.5) and I really love the Galaxy S. I was up in the air between Nexus S, My Touch 4g, and this one. The Nexus lost out because no memory slot, the My Touch seemed a little slower (perception maybe) and the screen was not as nice. I can live with the on board memory since I can do a 32 gig card and run most apps that way. Will I regret not waiting...maybe but right now it is the best phone I have had it was easy to root and remove all the garbage I didnt want.
So I say keep it

Memory IS an issue. With the type of processor this phone has is geared toward gaming and video. Gaming is great on this phone, but alot of the high quality games needs system resources and still needs a sizable amount of memory on the phone even with SD card data moved, not to mention even the apps that have to use system resources and cannot be moved. From my experience, the paltry memory was used real quick, and I'm not the only one.

No I haven't seen Epic 4g stock.
Im a 6yr Tmobile employee, I beta test and get my phones free, so I've been thru almost all our phones. This one has to have the most on board "bloatware" I've come across out of all our phones. Now bloatware to me by definition are software that should be OPTIONAL to the end user but is not and remains on the phone using memory and not being used.
A few apps I don't use and would like to be removed,
amazon mp3 - 1.12mb
Tmobile Backup- 1.15mb
Kindle- 2.68mb
Layer- 3.0mb
Media Hub- 4.47mb
My Account- 1.35mb
Slacker Radio- 2.40mb
T-Mobile TV- 4.48mb
TeleNav GPS- 1.97mb
ThinkFree Office- 9.18mb
Y! Finance Clock- 1.2mb
Now thats only app size, not to mention the cached data and background resources these apps use. And thats just some of the stuff, I do use some of the other apps already on the phone.
Really the point I'm trying to make is that most upper tier Android phones, (which this should fall in that catagory) should almost be a prerequisite to have a sizable amount of onboard memory available to the end user and this one doesn't. Why does the vibrant have sizable memory and this doesn't?
And BTW, I do not know why everybody is dogging the MyTouch 4G, it can do everything the Gs4G can do, and has memory and camera flash and only .2 of an inch smaller screen, and of course HTC made so updates and large XDA support. Like I said...I like the Galaxy S 4G but feel I made a lateral move from the MyTouch 4G.

2nd How is GB roms running comparing to vibrant when it comes to hardware supported, battery life, GPS .............. ?
and last question how come every time i go from page to another my internet security keeps flagging as malicious URL (malware) ?

GB ROM's aren't fully stable just yet. And dev support is about 1/50th of what it is in the Vibrant section so it will take more time for it to pick up for the 4G. Also, internal memory sucks so you'll probably need apps2SD or something.
But there are plenty of great people here that will help you out, lots of good things should be coming to this phone in the future. The ROM bible in the dev section should provide you with a lot of rooting tips.
Good luck man.
Thanks for your respond mackster. I will be joining the game here soon.

Internal Memory
I believe that the internal memory is somewhere around 512 mb, hence the need for the fota fix, after replacing the fota files you should have in the area of +/- 350 mb.

I would not worry about the lack of internal memory. With the fota fix, removed bloatware and apps2sd you should never have any space issues. The 4g is one badass phone out the box, once you get all the mods up and going it is just killer.

just got it but too bad i have to go to work. I will be playing with it tomorrow after noon
http://androidandme.com/2012/01/news/t-mobile-puts-six-android-phones-on-the-chopping-block/
Less than a year and they are talking of Cutting models?!
Nearing, not at, so who knows how long that will drag on.
They must have something coming up their sleeves, we'll see what happens.
Whatever it is, i'm with this device for a while to come. I got some nuts to crack with development for it, and i've picked this one to stop and learn all the ins-and-outs of Android on.
The Achilles heel of this device is the lack of internal storage, (battery aside) to me it's where the ball got dropped on this one. With the 16/32 gig internal available on releasing models, that's a significant difference, and probably skews the playing field a bit.
Speaking of field, the near field technology deal is another thing that's being released that T-Mo might be trying to get devices with and capitalize on. Since Verizon dropped the ball by putting a blockage between the tech and Google Wallet (which, really, is what makes it work for point of sale payments) I can see other carriers trying to get in on it like Sprint did to distinguish themselves from #1 by offering a service they don't.
Dunno, it's really all speculation at this point in the game, but i'm with this one for the long haul. The longer I stick with this one, the quicker/easier it'll be to transition to another and i'll probably be able to pull my ROMs forward to whatever the next good hardware keyboard device is.
(really, after learning all the shortcut keys for the hardware buttons, how could you not have that?? It's like trying to type on a real computer wearing mittens without them.)
This makes me mad, but really, we don't know what exactly this means. I wish more people would have realized what an awesome phone this is.
wth? this makes no sense at all... i could see them discontinuing silders (although not liking the idea) but seeing sensation amaze and the mid/low end LG models too makes me wonder.
perhaps they are the least popular ones? sounds kinda weird tho
Yeah, sensation was/is very popular.... Amaze literally just came out. it's a beast... Dub tee eff

Have you read up on mtd any? Something I was noticing as well, although its not like I've gone anywhere near limits of this device... And I'm with u unless they drop a 5" keyboard device... Like a samsung epic note.... Would switch back to samsunk then.

mtd?
Could you expand on that a bit? I skipped sleep yet again, last night, and it's just not clicking right now.
I spent the last couple of hours browsing over the forums here in our little corner of XDA. I didn't really have the head to get any work done, and so much has happened that i've missed recently. Taking a few hours to just browse around and read this or that and catch up a little bit has been helpful.
There was a time not too long ago where i'd read every post in the MT4GS forums, most multiple times. Just a few weeks float by and now there's so much I have to catch up on, there are still a few topics I need to spend some time wrapping my head around.
I'd love to spend a day just reading up on and playing with MR. Root, the download mode thread, and the various Hboot threads to just soak them all in together and see where I could help out. Then i'd love to build on that by taking a good long look at the string of OTA updates and see what it'll take to crack the latest un-rootable roadblock we got tossed. Maybe pick up something along the way to add to it all.
I dunno, at the moment sleep deprived and just a tad overwhelmed by the amount of information here I haven't had the chance to soak in yet, and all the stuff i'm trying to roll out for my ROM - and i've got a lot of threads that are getting out of date that need to be brought current, added to and finished.
This little floating session has kinda given me a good handle on what I need to do to make progress in all the aforementioned areas though, so when I sit down I can just get started instead of trying to figure out what i'm doing.
Kinda useless right this very moment, but that's okay because I got 11 minutes before I have to walk out the door. I'll turn all this over in my head during the day, and hit the ground running when I get to steal some time tonight.
Meantime, what's mtd? lmao

Agreed.
The problem is, at least in my opinion, high end devices with QWERTY keyboards are really rare. If you look at TMob's lineup, they've got the Sidekick 4G, the Cliq2, the gravity smart, the MTQ, and the MT4GS. Only the 4GS is really a high end device, with the rest either being mid-tier, or really crappy.
What's really sad is that the only other carrier who seems to have a decent variety of QWERTY androids is Verizon. Sprint and AT&T don't seem that interested (although AT&T has the captivate glide (which is about the level of the Cliq2, IMO), and I think the general perception is that QWERTY devices are for entry level texters.
I didn't meant to go off on a tangent, but I think the MT4GS, discontinued or not, is going to be the only option for QWERTY lovers for a while. I am hoping we see a MT5GS after a while, but the fact that LG seems to be making MT devices concerns me. Maybe the MT4GS was the last hurrah of the line.
I can see them getting chopped up and divided amongst the other carriers. Maybe they're getting ready for that?

MTD as i remember it from the G1 and the MT3GS is the ability to grow and shrink partitions. Using a flashable .zip and a .txt file on the Sdcard, for example, we were able to grow the data partition at the cost of cache and system (good if we were using an AOSP rom like Cyanogenmod).

Think it was a thread about app 2 sd? Not sure - thanks for the clarification

Nah, not really - and intentionally so actually. In my quest to make Bulletproof be as stable as possible this is something that would throw a monkey wrench in my work at this time.
In the future it's on the list, because i'm ending up with internal space that is essentially wasted, and this probably the best way to reclaim that and make it usable.
I'm a little jealous of all the knowledge most of you have from having Android phones before - stuff like this you just know about, whereas i'd have to actively look for it unless someone mentions it off-hand, and it's hard to look for things you don't know exist.
That only means they're going to stop selling it. Look at the G2. They declared its end of life eight months after it first went on the market.

mt4gs is just a plain good phone with its camera and dual core. Its still sized as a phone should be in my book. We have true ICS working, sense ics working, and a good heap of feature complete GB roms as well... So if they dont produce something unprecedented in the mobile camera business in the following year, its a keeper anyway... i even ordered it from here europe to enjoy this amazing phone. I say get while you still can...lol
i think i figured out why t-mobile would want to do this.
the chances are that new phones with S4 snapdragons are around the corner (MWC) and with them being 28nm SoCs the battery life will be dramatically improved, which to be fair is the real downside of current phones...
still, it's very very sad to see a phone discontinued after just few months
Looks like the rumors of the mT4GS' demise were exaggerated. Looks like it was a fat finger error. There is still life for this great phone. Nothing to see here move along.

MTD is an acronym for Memory Technology Device. It describes the CLASS OF STORAGE NAND hardware, and the driver infrastructure in the Linux kernel that was responsible for managing it.
Those scripts that you remember using were manipulating the default kernel command line, in order to feed a customized PARTITION TABLE into the MTD DRIVER, rather than the "fixed" one stored within the hardware's SPL.
This does not apply to Doubleshot, since Doubleshot uses an eMMC instead, though there may be similar approaches to feeding the eMMC driver a custom partition table.

Don't most of those 16/32 GB internal storage devices LACK an sdcard slot? If so, then Doubleshot has a potential for up to 34 GB storage, which is 2 GB more than a 32 GB device...
Someone in the Intl forum has actually managed to increase the internal storage from 8gb to 11gb. I'm curious if it works for our att phones. Apparently, you can flash the PIT file via Odin and it works according to some people.

are you sure about this to up-great memory 8gp up to 11 gb ??
This is for the international version. Flashing this to your device will almost certainly result in a brick.

I am not sure this is a good idea. The "drive" in the Samsung Galaxy S4 is (like) an SSD as it supports TRIM.
There is a lot of open/update/close/delete going on which leaves lots of data to purge.
Lets say I write to a file called TEMP.TXTthe word hello. On the drive it writes this (simplified):
Drive *=in use/valid x=invalid but not purged e=empty
[*****eee][eeeeeeee]
Data:
[hello]
Now if I go and update TEMP.TXT to and change hello to seeya, it now looks like this:
Drive *=in use/valid x=invalid but not purged e=empty
[xxxxx***][**eeeeee]
Data:
[seeya]
So it doesnt update the block of data because it is "too expensive" performance-wise so it writes to a blank space.
*Expensive is read the data in that block, format/blank out the block, modify the buffer for the new data, write to block
*its always fastest to write to an empty block
On occasion, the drive will initiate a garbage collection stage which takes the invalidated areas of the drive and sets them back to blank
*Google TRIM SSD for in-depth SSD functionality
SSD are overprovisioned(OP) on purpose for performance reasons and longevity. This means if there is a 128 gig drive, it advertises 120 gig drive. The OP is like guaranteed blank area.
Now when the drive gets 85% full or more, it has that 8 gig read/write/update/delete available still and performance is still great
If you remove the OP and use the entire 128 gig, as it gets 85% full and more, the performance of the drive reduces as it is reading/writing/deleting to areas that are not blank so the drive tells the OS to wait while it gets the area ready and then the phone feels sluggish
I purchased android turner application and this has aTRIM feature. I scheduled that to run every 3 hours and it reports it clears anywhere from 24 meg to 3.89 gig. I let my buddy check out my phone to check out a game, and he goes "wow everything on your phone is so fluid". He has a Galaxy Note 2
Sorry for the rant

Which app has the TRIM feature? The developer makes "System Tuner" and "Android Tuner". Which one did you get??

ANDROID TUNER (Blue Android picture)
Start it up
Click on SYSTEM MANAGER
On the TOP bar thing, click FS TRIMMER
It will show /system, /data and /cache and at very bottom a button that says TRIM
Click it
you can also set it to apply on boot...but I have mine scheduled to run every 3 hours which is probably overkill but hey.... what the hell, right?
FYI, I have System Tuner and did not see TRIM in it. I didn't look very hard though. Was too busy being annoyed that System Tuner did not become what Android Tuner is. And Android Tuner is like 4x more expensive.

Why would he remove the link? Its up to the user to decide to use it or not. Censorship of links that are right here in xda is just plain silly.
Because some noob will come in here thinking it is a tutorial, go to that link, flash the file and brick their phone.

I'm not talking about censorship; I'm talking about responsibility. It is irresponsible to post a promise like that and link to something that will almost certainly hard-brick any i337 on which it is flashed.
It will most likely fail to even flash...from what I've come up with we can't even flash our own pits (I've tried) they say successfully flashed but nothing else changes, a pit flash SHOULD delete all data on a phone and wipe the partitions/reset them...however with the s4...it just boots back up like the pit was never flashed
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 4
There is always the chance that it will flash, though. Chance is not good with a $650 phone.
