T-mobile plans to ax MT4GS and other phones - T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide

http://androidandme.com/2012/01/news/t-mobile-puts-six-android-phones-on-the-chopping-block/
Less than a year and they are talking of Cutting models?!

Nearing, not at, so who knows how long that will drag on.
They must have something coming up their sleeves, we'll see what happens.
Whatever it is, i'm with this device for a while to come. I got some nuts to crack with development for it, and i've picked this one to stop and learn all the ins-and-outs of Android on.
The Achilles heel of this device is the lack of internal storage, (battery aside) to me it's where the ball got dropped on this one. With the 16/32 gig internal available on releasing models, that's a significant difference, and probably skews the playing field a bit.
Speaking of field, the near field technology deal is another thing that's being released that T-Mo might be trying to get devices with and capitalize on. Since Verizon dropped the ball by putting a blockage between the tech and Google Wallet (which, really, is what makes it work for point of sale payments) I can see other carriers trying to get in on it like Sprint did to distinguish themselves from #1 by offering a service they don't.
Dunno, it's really all speculation at this point in the game, but i'm with this one for the long haul. The longer I stick with this one, the quicker/easier it'll be to transition to another and i'll probably be able to pull my ROMs forward to whatever the next good hardware keyboard device is.
(really, after learning all the shortcut keys for the hardware buttons, how could you not have that?? It's like trying to type on a real computer wearing mittens without them.)

This makes me mad, but really, we don't know what exactly this means. I wish more people would have realized what an awesome phone this is.

wth? this makes no sense at all... i could see them discontinuing silders (although not liking the idea) but seeing sensation amaze and the mid/low end LG models too makes me wonder.
perhaps they are the least popular ones? sounds kinda weird tho

Yeah, sensation was/is very popular.... Amaze literally just came out. it's a beast... Dub tee eff
Just my spare change.

Have you read up on mtd any? Something I was noticing as well, although its not like I've gone anywhere near limits of this device... And I'm with u unless they drop a 5" keyboard device... Like a samsung epic note.... Would switch back to samsunk then.

mtd?
Could you expand on that a bit? I skipped sleep yet again, last night, and it's just not clicking right now.
I spent the last couple of hours browsing over the forums here in our little corner of XDA. I didn't really have the head to get any work done, and so much has happened that i've missed recently. Taking a few hours to just browse around and read this or that and catch up a little bit has been helpful.
There was a time not too long ago where i'd read every post in the MT4GS forums, most multiple times. Just a few weeks float by and now there's so much I have to catch up on, there are still a few topics I need to spend some time wrapping my head around.
I'd love to spend a day just reading up on and playing with MR. Root, the download mode thread, and the various Hboot threads to just soak them all in together and see where I could help out. Then i'd love to build on that by taking a good long look at the string of OTA updates and see what it'll take to crack the latest un-rootable roadblock we got tossed. Maybe pick up something along the way to add to it all.
I dunno, at the moment sleep deprived and just a tad overwhelmed by the amount of information here I haven't had the chance to soak in yet, and all the stuff i'm trying to roll out for my ROM - and i've got a lot of threads that are getting out of date that need to be brought current, added to and finished.
This little floating session has kinda given me a good handle on what I need to do to make progress in all the aforementioned areas though, so when I sit down I can just get started instead of trying to figure out what i'm doing.
Kinda useless right this very moment, but that's okay because I got 11 minutes before I have to walk out the door. I'll turn all this over in my head during the day, and hit the ground running when I get to steal some time tonight.
Meantime, what's mtd? lmao

Agreed.
The problem is, at least in my opinion, high end devices with QWERTY keyboards are really rare. If you look at TMob's lineup, they've got the Sidekick 4G, the Cliq2, the gravity smart, the MTQ, and the MT4GS. Only the 4GS is really a high end device, with the rest either being mid-tier, or really crappy.
What's really sad is that the only other carrier who seems to have a decent variety of QWERTY androids is Verizon. Sprint and AT&T don't seem that interested (although AT&T has the captivate glide (which is about the level of the Cliq2, IMO), and I think the general perception is that QWERTY devices are for entry level texters.
I didn't meant to go off on a tangent, but I think the MT4GS, discontinued or not, is going to be the only option for QWERTY lovers for a while. I am hoping we see a MT5GS after a while, but the fact that LG seems to be making MT devices concerns me. Maybe the MT4GS was the last hurrah of the line.

I can see them getting chopped up and divided amongst the other carriers. Maybe they're getting ready for that?

MTD as i remember it from the G1 and the MT3GS is the ability to grow and shrink partitions. Using a flashable .zip and a .txt file on the Sdcard, for example, we were able to grow the data partition at the cost of cache and system (good if we were using an AOSP rom like Cyanogenmod).

Nah, not really - and intentionally so actually. In my quest to make Bulletproof be as stable as possible this is something that would throw a monkey wrench in my work at this time.
In the future it's on the list, because i'm ending up with internal space that is essentially wasted, and this probably the best way to reclaim that and make it usable.
I'm a little jealous of all the knowledge most of you have from having Android phones before - stuff like this you just know about, whereas i'd have to actively look for it unless someone mentions it off-hand, and it's hard to look for things you don't know exist.

That only means they're going to stop selling it. Look at the G2. They declared its end of life eight months after it first went on the market.

And I used mine well past that point.
Just my spare change.

mt4gs is just a plain good phone with its camera and dual core. Its still sized as a phone should be in my book. We have true ICS working, sense ics working, and a good heap of feature complete GB roms as well... So if they dont produce something unprecedented in the mobile camera business in the following year, its a keeper anyway... i even ordered it from here europe to enjoy this amazing phone. I say get while you still can...lol

i think i figured out why t-mobile would want to do this.
the chances are that new phones with S4 snapdragons are around the corner (MWC) and with them being 28nm SoCs the battery life will be dramatically improved, which to be fair is the real downside of current phones...
still, it's very very sad to see a phone discontinued after just few months

Looks like the rumors of the mT4GS' demise were exaggerated. Looks like it was a fat finger error. There is still life for this great phone. Nothing to see here move along.

MTD is an acronym for Memory Technology Device. It describes the CLASS OF STORAGE NAND hardware, and the driver infrastructure in the Linux kernel that was responsible for managing it.
Those scripts that you remember using were manipulating the default kernel command line, in order to feed a customized PARTITION TABLE into the MTD DRIVER, rather than the "fixed" one stored within the hardware's SPL.
This does not apply to Doubleshot, since Doubleshot uses an eMMC instead, though there may be similar approaches to feeding the eMMC driver a custom partition table.

Don't most of those 16/32 GB internal storage devices LACK an sdcard slot? If so, then Doubleshot has a potential for up to 34 GB storage, which is 2 GB more than a 32 GB device...

Maybe Gingerbread surprise for those who wait

Maybe with the "Nexus S" coming soon with gingerbread, samsung will skip froyo and get all galaxy s phones running the newest version first. That would be a nice end of year present. Any thoughts? Just tossing out a hope beyond hopes. Lol

No .
It`s taking a long time to getting froyo in the states as it is .
I believe I read that Samsung already released froyo to the carriers and the carriers are what's holding it back.
The Fragmentation will get worse and worse until Google fixes it, or Android implodes.
Very simple.
Imagine if you bought a new computer, and you were stuck on Windows XP all the way until now... when you were finally granted access to Vista.

It is pretty clear that Google has it under wraps - most manufacturers don't even have the specs. So the likelyhood of our phone getting it when the specs have not been made public and no one else has it is zero.

No freaking way they will do that. Samsung is in the business to make money, updating existing devices mean less people will buy their new phones. Count yourself lucky when you get Froyo.

Changed to what it should have read.
not gonna happen
the way I see it, the Nexus S wont be terribly dissimilar to the current SGS series of handsets (from a hardware platform). Google wont buy into this "oh we'll get around to it" bull**** of source releases (they can't, it will be their lead dev platform).
So even if Samsung/AT&T continue to be ****house at releasing fw for the Captivate, it wont matter as much as it does now, because we will have source for a lot more stuff.

I really think with the remote possibility of similar hardware or at worst case scenario Samsung went with a dual core I think that they will use as much of the existing code as possible.... (It appears as if they may be alittle lazy in the coding dept. I've been trying to tinker with the i9000 headset issue and the difference seems to be alot of code added to the Captivate so that the headset hardware in the US worked like every other phone out there instead of the lazy way that Samsung first implemented it)
And if they are as lazy as above, we should have something that may be easier to port.... or at least somewhat easier to port. Especially with the progress that the CM6.1 SGS team is making as well with ditching the rfs system.... We'll get it soon enough.... not as fast as N1s, but fairly fast.

Isn't RFS dead if you use a ext4/voodoo based kernel anyway? Dead as in, the phone can read ext4, we can just partition everything as ext4 and move along, nothing to see here.

Not sure I'd get the Aria, did it upgrade to 2.2 yet? It's also weaker and smaller than the Captivate. But I definitely agree, after seeing the speed of update and the GPS debacle.. not sure I'll get another Samsung handset again.
With AT&T though... there isn't exactly a wide range of selections.
EDIT: Them Windows 7 Mobile phones sure look tempting.. even then, I'd be eyeing the Samsung Focus.. -_-

Actually I saw posts on the T-Mobile forums where some people are having lock ups now where they have to remove the battery to get the phone to become responsive again. I haven't heard anything about screen bleed but there are a lot of people complaining about having washed out screens. There's a whole slew of other problems starting to be reported with the Sensation as well. It almost sounds exactly like the same pattern that happened with the G2x right after launch. I'm starting to wonder if something with the T-Mobile bloatware is what's causing these phones to have problems.

How you know half have left? By reading the threads here and then applying the 1/2 left theory, that means TMO sold like 20 devices.
Its dead here because everyone is waiting on the update. Everything else is like dead horse...how do i fix a reboot...wait on you know what. My battery overheats...wait for you know what. My screen bleeds....well so do people hit by cars, but you know what will fix that.
who would put the dev time right now into a new rom when a update is expected "by summer".
My son just called me and told me he's going to buy a sensation. I asked him,, does it have you know what on it? He said..."huh". So much for the really important things in this world.

One of the cool things about my job, is I get to break things. Up until wp7, tearing apart a ROm and finding out what causes problems was an easy thing to do. With the T-Mobile HD2, simply removing the bloatware made that device a better device. It was fun to sit and demonstrate a problem, flash a clean build, and watch the faces of the people around the table as the problem no longer appeared. I dated a TMO dev for a while...it didn't last.
Bloatware iis the #1 cause of problems, followed by drivers. I'd say problamatic apps would be 3rd. The primary reason for rooting is to remove bloatware...IMO.

At three months in the Vibrant wasn't "way ahead of this"...even with the relatively easy porting from other Galaxy S devices. We have good development for a three month old phone. With more devs showing interest daily...hell development is the reason I chose this phone. the slight pause you are detecting is probably the devs waiting for stable drivers from the Gingerbread drop.
But if you want to go...go..

I think its t-mobile's fault. until they adopt a new quality over quantity attitude and stop letting manufacturers have a turf battle with each other for the apple's direct competion crown we might get better phones. better as in tried and tested not the numbers war similar to digital camera manufacturers five years ago before ppl knew better. Better phones with even better support as far as updates are concerned.

I think you hit the nail on the head. We all know their WiFi Calling and My Account apps eat up data and kill the battery like no other.
I removed those the minute I got root and didn't have any further issues. I made a thread with all the crap Tmo put in there... even that scary LogMeIn remote desktop crap that they (use for support). Why would I want ANY one displaying up my phone on their screen other then me?
I also think that once they re-release the G2x with Gingerbread, the forums will pick back up. Remember you can't buy this phone right now. Most of the initial supporters are jumpers (they buy EVERY new phone that comes out) plus some that had issues and swapped.
You know thats why Tmo isn't selling the Froyo G2x anymore (waiting for GB). I think its a strong move because most companies just want the $$ and would sell a junk item to anyone. Ceasing the orders will speed up the GB update process (so they can continue making $$).
Oh and let me say HHHHHAAAAEL No im not getting a sensation. I think its a piece of crap. Stop the hate G2x threads.
Sorry about my mishap earlier on this thread, I cant leave this beast of a device.
Especially if Galaxy On Fire 2 comes out this month and they dont post pone it for a 3rd time

G2X completely off of TM's website? It all makes sense now...

Well it's obvious...despite the "normal" issues that any phones may experience (G2X blown out of proportion IMO with just a bunch of whiners),...that all led most to believe that it was temporary out of stock on TM's website due to the issues.....
It's very apparent it was taken off due to the Sensations release....had the G2X still have been on TM's site, it would have killed the sales of the Sensation.
Now with the new MyTouch4G Slide, obviously it would be wise, marketing wise, to take the G2X off completely to save the sales OR assist the sales (either way you look at it) of the Sensation and MT4G Slide...
Either way...I still own a G2X and will be getting the MT4G Slide for giggles just to have....returned to Sensation today...was a piece of crap....
G2X has realistically been the fastest phone I've ever owned...heck my SGS4G was faster than the Sensation...
Not to bash the Sensation, but soon it'll be just a dust in the wind as all the new devices come out soon....hint hint....Samsung Galaxy S 2 for TM? ANyone?

Every phone you ever buy from here on out will be dust in the wind. Accept it.
Is this post your opinion or do you have some super secret information from a T-mobile executive? I have both of the phones mentioned and I can assure you, the Sensation is no slouch once you stop Sense from running and use LP or ADW. It then becomes instant just like my G2X. Even running the phone stock with Sense, my Sensation always loaded apps faster (especially Google Maps) than my G2X. It also has a smoother browser than my G2X and plays the only game I play (Homerun Battle 3D) at a higher framerate.
By the way, I can do a side by side video if you think I'm lying. I never say anything I can't back up.
Lastly, the G2X would have never outseld the Sensation or MyTouch 4g Slide. Not because its inferior but because the mainstream buyer is going to want all the stupid eye candy on Sense. Also, the mainstream T-mobile customers will choose HTC over LG any day of the week. Its what they know.

Lmao, I was in a very similar situation a few days ago. It took all my strength to stop myself from tossing it out onto the interstate. I'm trying to make it until the Nexus 3 is released but it's very likely that ill smash this phone to bits long before it arrives.

using G2x to show a boarding pass
Definitely had many reasons to throw this phone out of the window but my worst experience was while standing in a airport security line and naively thinking that I would show my boarding pass to the security agent on my G2x. Of course just as I step up to the agent, the phone freezes and then resets leaving me to stand in the line for another 5 minutes while I pulled out the battery and reset the device. The entire time the agent is looking at me and telling me that I need to get back to the end of the line if the phone is not up in next 2 minutes
I hate this phone with a passion...

Are you on the HTC payroll?
I get it. It is a nice phone if you happen to be lucky and get a good one. Very similar to the G2x situation.
Which screen does your have? I am still interested in the Sensation. I miss the larger screen on my HD2. I just could not pull the trigger based on the poor quality of the demo in my local store. I would love to see a comparison video and pics between the two phones.

Nope, not on anyone's payroll. In fact, if you take a look at my posts from the past two days in the Sensation forums, I was pissing everyone off stating that I think the GSII is the better device. I am fortunate enough to buy any phone I want, whenever I want so I am NEVER biased towards one particular device. Some people will defend the device there stuck with to no end and while I understand it, I hate it. I just say what I think the better device is along with giving my reasons. In my humble opinion, someone who is not tied to a device for a year or two usually ends up being less biased than the person who is and is trying there damndest to justify there purchase. There is no doubt about it, Sense blows and HTC did a horrible job with optimizing it. Once you load ADW on it, the UI feels like a dual core device. Everything else like the browser, market, apps and maps already felt like a dual core device. For instance, the app pictures load faster on the Sensation than they do on the G2X when scrolling through the market. You also don't get that stutter when doing so. Contact pictures also appear instantely unlike the G2X where it takes them a couple seconds to load as your scrolling through the list. Google maps also load instantely when s rolling through a map where as the streets appear blurry before loading on the G2X. It really is a nice phone once you pull Sense off of it but my absolute biggest reason behing choosing it to be my daily driver er is the display. Text is so much clearer and I find my self scrolling a lot less through websites due to the resolution and size. I do think the contrast is better on the G2X but clearer text is more important than darker blacks. I care about darker blacks on my 4 LED TV's in my house, not my 4inch phone.
Let me know what you want to see in the video and ill add it in for you.

Amen Brother....
I too am not locked to a single phone or carrier. So being biased is not in the equation. I too have both the Sensation and the G2x. My 'unbiased' opinion leans towards the G2x. I think loading a new launcher on the Sensation is equiv to rooting and flashing CM7 on the G2x. If I have to make a radical change in my device to like the device, time to move on. I have to like the device before I'll even consider making changes to it. yeah i know, strange.
I'm not in a contract but my opinion about how I buy phones isn't "what kind of phone it IS" but "What kind of phone it can BECOME".
I like getting a phone and flashing custom roms to gain extra special abilities and functions.
Coming from the Nexus One running CM7, the G2x with CM7 feels right at home.
GPS has been worked on tremendously and is finally reliable. The phone never locks up and simply just works as it should. I trust CM7 to build quality roms for a phone over any manufacture.
Stock roms, to me, are something to "just use" until something better comes along. Everything always works better hacked. The people that fight that urge simply blows my mind. Peace of mind is out there if you want it.
And as far as the higher resolution of the Sensation, I just run the G2x at 190 density to gain the same screen real-estate. Supposedly the G2x/O2x were designed to function properly at higher resolutions (*rumor).

Well the potential for the Sensation once it becomes unlocked is going to be pretty good. You know it will get CM and the Adreno 220 is capable of more power than most other GPU's. It just has some ****ty drivers right now and games aren't yet optimized for it. I also have my G2X density at 190 but it still doesn't make the text as clear as on my Sensation. I've said it before but after looking at my Sensations display for a couple of days, my G2X display looks blurry.
Oh....you asked earlier. I have the Sharp display and just like the G2X, I had to return 3 of them to get a nice display.

Well I can tell you my Sensation remains at full bars of WiFi all throught my house and outside of my house. Look back through my posts and you will see a video I made, showing the power of the Sensations WiFi. I also hold it in landscape, showing there is no death grip issue with mine. Yes I was 2 floors away from my router when shooting this video and it was proved in the video. Every manufacture makes buggy devices. You can't expect to get a perfect device anymore in today's market. My past 5 phones had to be returned multiple times a piece just to get a device with none or minimal bugs.
On the other side of the table. My wife had the G2X as well. She then saw my Sensation and wanted it so I sold her G2X and bought her a Sensation. She couldn't be happier and hasn't reported any problems to me. Trust me, she knows what bugs are and she will tell me about them.

Uhhh for the longest time it was indeed OFF OF TM's site. I just checked yesterday and it wasn't on there at all. Now it's back on, therefore, it's ironic that I happen to be at TM Corporate store yesterday talking with a guy from Corporate that happened to be there and he did specifically mentioned that, (paraphrasing) "regarding the G2X, there are many reason for why it was pulled off before the launch of the sensation. It wasn't due to any hardware related issues, more software actually. The G2X was actually the fastest selling phone nationwide, which supply and demand may have been a contributing factor for it being pulled for a while. He did mention the improvements on the screen for the newer batches of the G2X, which is another reason adding to the why's...."
It was a good 10min convo...all paraphrasing of course, but at any rate, it doesn't take too much brain power to realize the reasoning(s) and in the G2X's case, IMO it's all pretty practical rather than theory.

Who is Thinking of Jumping Ship to the SGS2?

Now that it is official I am not sure if it is the device that is getting me excited or all the hype around it. I really like the idea of the larger screen and super thin body. Wish it was qhd though. I guess with every good thing comes a bad thing......
Thinking the only way to get it without spending money is to add a line, cancel my 3D's line and sell the 3D on Craigs list. That should cover the both costs.......Anyone know what Sprint's max cancelation charge is?
Like I said, just thinking about it now and would like to hear what others are planning on doing. Hopefully this doesn't turn into a flame war......Just looking to see if people jumping ship have a better way to get there then what I was thinking of doing......

The SGS II will only be a good phone because of the Dev support. Samsung has a hard time updating the software for some reason. Gingerbread hasn't even been rolled out to the original Epic for god's sake.

The epics an exception. They can't seem to get the keyboard and radio figured out. This is the reason all sgs2s will be the sane and not have a keyboard lol. You also have to remember that update fiasco had more to do with carriers than Samsung themselves. The sgs had their updates right on time. I'm also curious about the op question. I've always wondered what would happen to your handset if cancelled within the first 6 months.

Well i guess it depends on you, I like a thinner device and i know it will have a better camera but I hatethe cheap feel of Samsung devices and.the updates , gingerbread is over nine months old and nothing official for the epic, so what would make me think they will get it on time on the second.device, same thing goes with the photon MOTO devices rake forever to update, that's why I stick with the EVO 3d but all 3 phones are great phones

Well, google didn't have much luck with the nexus s at first either Hence their nickname the Nexus B lol
I won't lie the, gs2 is a beast of a phone. I also think the E3D has been underutilized so far though, this phone has a lot more potential than it gets credit for. Plus the Evo was updated to gingerbread around the same time the epic was getting froyo, it would have came before but HTC waited for gingerbreak to be patched before pushing the update.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
I hate to admit it as I have been a die-hard HTC fan, but, as far as my experience is concerned (on 3rd E3D) I think they really botched this flagship. YMMV, of course.
So long as the SGS2 has a radio that is as good (read: no weaker than) the E3D I'll be happy. The Radio on the NS4G was pitifully weak, the E3D is no better...even after a few. I can live with this. The signal strength indicator can't be trusted on it's own, go by actual measurements and most importantly missed/dropped calls and roaming....and I miss and drop and roam more than ever. It sucks. I do love this phone. I will greatly miss the qHD.
I became fine with the uber-weak radio, but, the final straw is the increasingly bad power-on fiasco. Sometimes it does, some times it doesn't. Some times it will be plugged in with a green light locked up tight (requiring a battery pull and SD card pull) *AND* have a dead battery on top of it. It's at the point where I have a backup alarm set up. Yeah yeah yeah, if I need an alarm clock USE an alarm clock...well, no other phone ever gave me any issues, so, I'm going to say that it is not unreasonable to expect my phone to A> turn on and B> charge while plugged into the charger.
I've tried hard, I do love this phone...even the horrid form factor has really grown on me. But I barely use the 3D enough to really miss... I may keep the E3D, it is a rather unique phone, but, SGS2 here I come....Also, aside from touchwiz (which is easily disgarded) it is a nearly stock Android experience....and Samsung has Cyanogen on their payroll. That can't be bad.
I will miss you guys, I'll be back to visit though. It has been fun.

Honestly, I think its more insecure when somebody has a decent phone and has to make a thread asking for their peers/competitions approval to get the other phone. Btw, I have a nokia 1100. Do you think I should upgrade to the nokia 6630?
I voided my warranty and your mum.
The reason the new phone does not appeal to me that much is because it is WIDE -even wider than the Evo 4G. And taller too.

I see it more like asking the opinions of people you consider knowledgeable on the subject. You'd be a fool to not ask people who are very familiar with something when considering whether to buy it or not....especially when it's such a relatively pricey gadget. Take it as a compliment that someone (may) respect your opinion enough on the subject to take your advice to heart.
We are a community here. I doubt any of us actually give a crap of another approves of one another in a social context, especially when starting a thread like this (so long as it isn't obviously trollbait).
For the life of me i don't know why you won't take this into the correct forum...at this point you are trolling and trying to cause a flame war..go back to the Samsung website and dry hump a pic of the gs2 ..i mean its specs are unprecedented..a 1.2 ghz dual core...whoaa.. a gig of RAM? Holy moly...a wvga screen..omfg... This thing ****s on everything...there is nothing else like it..I bet it will load up webpages a third of a.second faster than the e3d and that is very important..mods pls get rid of this rush guy..he's been causing trouble for hours and its getting on everyones nerves
You guys know that instant feeling of anger, shame, befuddlement you get when you see a trailer for a movie that has already been made 2 times before?
And like... The 1st one wasn't good to begin with but it got a lot of "views" so they keep doing it...

4.2.1 for MT4G S?

Hi folks and devs,
I'm just wondering what might be happening w/ the 4.2.1 update on the MT4G S. It's been a while, and I just wanted to ask if there are plans for a release, or if it's not worth it or what. Since the phone's so old, not sure what's on the agenda, but I've got it on my Acer a500 and it's so amazingly fast, it's unbelievable. Would be so great to have it on my phone as well...
Thx.
I'm leaning away from Android as a whole, its all to buggy. Last I seen Bluetooth ffc some keyboard issues ect were in 4.2.1 so its all way to familiar right? Also going into dock mode looked extremely slow to load so all this has made me give up hope in Android. I've been using Android since the G1 and the issues replicate constantly.

Oh wow. That's too bad, man. Sorry to hear that. We loved your work tho! I think you're right in some regard tho - I recently messed with my Mom's iPad, and it just feels better put together, more solid (than my a500 at least). I hate to say that b/c I hate Apple, but it's sorta true. I will never own an Apple product tho, don't get me wrong. I love Android.

I've contemplated going that route, but I replaced my wife's iPhone 3GS with a Galaxy Nexus and it has it's own issues.
I'm waiting for an ebay item of stratosphere II I don't care if it doesn't have any developer support(I can support a device on my own). But right now I'm waiting for my replacement parts to ship right on my doorstep.
Regarding nexus devices I'm still waiting for the next nexus with hw keyboard. ALthough unlikely to happen I'm not losing any hopes

I forced myself to use the virtual keyboard for a while now. I've become so used to it that now I rarely slide out the qwerty. So, if my next phone doesn't have hardware keyboard, I won't have a learning curve.
I'm actually tired of hwkb, as my phone before this was a MotoCliq. Both hwkbs failed, and I don't much care for the novelty of it anymore.

When I got my S3 I hated and still hate the virtual keyboard. I can't let go of the doubleshot because of the hardware keyboard shortcuts and certainty of keystrokes for terminal commands.
I did find a workaround for the virtual keyboard though:
http://celluon.com/products.php
I solved the virtual keyboard problem by getting a real virtual keyboard. It's the most awesome thing since slide keypads.
I can consistently hit around 60 words a minute with solid accuracy, once you start pushing to and past 70 wpm you're getting too fast for the device to interpret your keystrokes.
Quick pairing, should work for the doubleshot on any rom that supports a sixaxis ps3 controller, otherwise the htc "no bluetooth input device for you" mantra prevents it working.
@strapped: JB update is sweet for the S3, I have over 317 apps installed and running - pretty much all paid (ad free) versions, not running into any force closes, slowdowns or random errors. They finally learned how to play nice together as a group.
OS actually sees and displays all apps - unlike on gingerbread where you topped out around 100 or so apps before it started losing track of what you had installed.
You just spent too long with the weight of trying to fix everything HTC broke for us here on your shoulders and are getting burnt out from it. There is light down the tunnel.
The lack of hardware keyboard devices on Android will keep people like us either stuck trying to make it right after launch or despising the candybar style device in our hands everytime the virtual keyboard pops up.
I don't know what you'd go to - maybe ubuntu native when it comes into it's own? You're going to have fewer (if any?) hardware keyboard choices going to anything else. Think it's bad now? The "fractured android ecosystem" is why we have a keyboard at all and not simply iclones.
JB solves everything we don't like about gingerbread. Next flagship/near flagship device with a hardware keyboard will have it and life will be grand.
Hate to see you hang on this long just to give up so close to the savoring the fruits of your frustration.
6 months later and I still hate the S3 despite all it does well. If T-mobile wasn't such a joke for national tower infrastructure, i'd have never got one. Travelling randomly state to state for work and needing map data on the road is not possible. Frequently there isn't a T-mobile tower for a hundred miles or more - so when I hit the tiny mb limit for roaming data, they just cut all data services and leave me in the middle of nowhere with no navigation.
Maps aside, an active smartphone data connection is required for my job. I need to send/receive pdf files, pictures and email consistently over the course of my shift - the first time t-mobile cut me off on data like that almost cost me my job.
Things are starting to go right for android users as a whole with JB - give it a chance to trickle back and fix things here, otherwise a little more patience hopefully brings a JB slider not far off...
I think this thread got a bit off topic, putting it back on topic, is there ever going to be a 4.2.1 based ROM for the doubleshot? As of now, even the HTC legend has one!

Well if more people would chip in rather than asking I'm sure it could be done a lot faster

Well we are going to need a kernel lol and I'm not sure what edits need to be made to get 4.2.1 booting.
I did have it on my vision before the digitizer stopped working and has dead spots. And its super NICE. But the only visual difference I seen was the status bar. The lockscreen/widgets seemed slow to load and I couldn't get it sped up even at 1.8 Ghz.

I am wondering for the same question. The development of Mytouch 4G Slide is stopped, seemingly. The devices with hardware keyboards became less popular and developers have moved to non-keyboard devices.

Have you seen the development thread lately? I'm guessing you haven't because we have enough to keep users going. HTC bombed the doubleshot and they know it, anything past GB takes heavy lifting to get going right for us, but we try as best we can.
Just because there isn't a new post every 5 minutes does not mean development is dead, it simply means nothing to post about. I have a thread on the shift section that literally gets bumped by users, but it still gets used still gets downloads there are just no issues what so ever to post about.
Why after all we do, do we still have users like you?
I totally understand that its a difficult prossecc, but why is it being such a pain, itsnt it almost exactly the same phone as the Pyramid? Just wiht a smaller screen and a KB? Dont they have almost the exact same specs? so couldnt you use their device tree just modified for the Doubleshot?

Yes pyramid and doubleshot are the same specs. I can't use any device tree or build for anything because my phone is more powerful than my PC. PC only has a 1.6 Ghz Single Core and 1GB RAM.
The only thing my PC can do is kernels, and it struggles with that.
But sounds like your on the right track, if you keep searching I'm sure you could come from the shadows with a build.
