Android KitKat - Cool Glimpse of Android - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

If haven't already I suggest giving this a look.
There's also a chance to win a prize(s) it looks like.
What are everyone's thoughts now that a new update has been confirmed and isn't called Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie.
What are your thoughts on the using of a brand name? Update possibly just for advertising incentives?

Where's the 4.3 update? They need to release that before show a 4.4 version.

Wake up and smell the coffee! Google is done with the huge monolithic OS updates that it once used to be known for.
Google is taking the approach of defragging the entire ecosystem by utilizing Google Play Services. Nearly EVERY SINGLE android device out there from 2.2 runs this service/application and is in total control by Google and no one else since it's closed source. It has become the core of Android now. They are focusing on applications now, forget the OS - this is the future. For all the whiners - it's the applications that make the device a great experience. The OS just provides the underlying layer, and Google has provided a rock solid one - it's done.

Seeing as how they stated that they want to support devices in land scape and portrait maybe they will come up with something to replace the nav bar, with something like pie controls.

Although I'm pretty sure this does indeed mean that 5.0 won't be a "K" name (so no KLP), KitKat will be 4.4, not 5.0.

Samsung confirmed today that 4.3 update will be coming in october....

Well I don't really think that 4.4 KitKat will be the next version of android. I don't know why but it just doesn't sound right. I mean all these hints from Google about klp for nothing? If you remember a Google employee had posted a picture of android eating klp which actually "confirmed" klp as the next version of android for me. It could be a marketing trick, like they show kitkat and then release 5.0 KLP . It could be a small "lie" from Google so that it keeps us thinking that they release 4.4 and then, boum they release 5.0. I could be wrong but I don't think 4.4 will be next version of android if you think how many android versions 4+ has supported (4.0, 4.1, 4.1.2, 4.2.1, 4.2.2, 4.3, and now 4.4???) All other android version numbers were supporting no more than two versions of android (1.5, 2.0, 2.2, 3.0,) Also I don't think Google would use a copyrighted name as their next version of android. Like I said, this could be a "trick" from Google or I could be totally wrong

Petition to Samsung and Google

Guys, i have created this... What u think about it?
I have not added Google and samsung's email cause i think that nominating them will be ok...

how bout we wait for the S4 GE to be actually released first?
Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
If they're based on the same hardware (and everything I have read so far indicates they are) what does it matter? Even if the ROMs from the Google edition of the S4 don't work direct, they almost certainly will with a bit of tinkering and that will be done by people on here. The upshot is we don't need Samsung or Google to release firmware to change the I9505 into the Google edition of the phone.
Besides, neither company would do this anyway, and a petition won't change that.

You've clearly never experienced the determination of people on xda, who will go out of their way to create a ROM for users, especially on the Samsung Galaxy S2 (my last phone). CyanogenMod was continuously maintained and it was AOSP based, very similar to that of a stock Android ROM. The hardware seems very similar to the current GS4's anyway, I'm sure you will see a working stock ROM within days of the Google edition being released. Also, a petition won't make Google or Samsung release the ROM.

Absolutely not. I'm simply highlighting the flaws. The petition won't make Google or Samsung release the ROM, it was the same with Samsung on the gs2, they wouldn't release the source code for the exynos 4 processor, even after multiple petitions. And also, when the GE is released, you will see a working ROM for the i9505 and i9500 quickly after that, plus CM10.1 is already on both devices.

The I9505 yes, as it's the same hardware from all reports. But I wouldn't bet on seeing a working rom off the Google S4 for the I9500 any time soon as the heart of that phone is based upon a completely different architecture. And CM10.1 isn't on the I9500 at all as of yet, nowhere near.

Careful now, he might actually believe it.
I am still trying to figure out the logic of wanting the stock AOSP for the S4 from Samsung.
How will this be any different from running any other AOSP rom? I mean, if you check out PA GamerZ ROM, that works quite well as a daily driver. Why would we want to use this stock AOSP (with features that are quite basic)? Just to get 4.3 when it comes out? So? Some dev will port that anyways.
I mean, if someone bought the S4, wasn't it for the features? If anyone wanted stock AOSP then why not Nexus 4? Ok if hardware is the question, then really waiting for the next Nexus isn't that hard.
So can someone explain to me why?

For someone like me, it's not about running the stock AOSP on S4. It's about how it can improve the AOSP based custom roms like CM, PA, etc.
Hopefully, Samsung/Google will release proper source codes as quickly as for Nexus devices so that custom roms can run better on S4.
I've been using GS3 (i9305), mainly with CM for the last 10 months or so. It works ok as a daily driver, but not as well as it could've been, mainly because not all the necessary sources are available/released.
I tried Nexus 4 for about a couple of weeks and running CM was definately more fluid/enjoyable than on GS3.
But I couldn't really get used to not having the physical home button and lack of storage space. If GS4 Google Edition is released with exact same hardward as normal i9505, then this will be almost perfect - custom roms running as well as on Nexus devices with physical home button and MicroSD slot.

In simple terms.
Google gets to have its vanilla version of Android on a flagship device without having to subsidize the cost of designing the hardware.
Unlike Nexus devices where Google invests R&D money to make the hardware... having Samsung and HTC put a version of Stock Android on the device pretty much absolves Google of any financial liability in relation to hardware development.
Nexus devices are traditionally spartan... and Google likes it that way... but what if mobile manufacturers want to have nexus compatible device with all the bells and whistles... they will all compete on who has the most Nexus compatible device.
This will attract developers and customers that prefer the stock Google experience
Bear in mind also Google is still developing their Motorola flagship device... this has handset makers very jittery.
Having a GE also puts the latest Android on a device and puts pressure on the makers of the device to move build it out into their MAIN version of Android.
So Key lime pie or 4.3 should come quicker on the HTC and S4 than would be tradtional.
Another issues is transparency.
For too long handset makers have said "our phone can't run the latest version of Android" when we know they lie.
Samsung has been good.. the S2 has JB while the HTC Sensation 4G has all but been dumped by their makers.
Companies that have a Google edition will have that extra edge in longevity.

I hope we get firmware today

Android 4.3 Sources Will Comes Today On AOSP Google Repositories

Prepare your compiler! Google*AOSP gatekeeper*Jean-Baptiste Queru*has announced that the sources of Android 4.3 will see the light in the course of the day!
"Google Airlines welcomes you on the ground in Android International Open Source Airport Project. The local time is exactly 4:30 pm. We will be taxiing for a few minutes to our gate JSS15J while ground support guides us to the public git server.
We hope that you had a pleasant flight and we welcome you to Jelly Bean, or that you have a conflict-free rebase while connecting to your final version.
Your source files will be delivered down the https://android.googlesource.com stairs, in hall jb-mr2-dev, on carousel android-4.3_r2.1. Oversize kernel source files will follow a few minutes later at the counter.
Customs forms are available at https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/drivers and need to be filled before starting a device build, even if this is not your first trip to Jelly Bean.
If you forgot to pack something in your luggage, pre-packed luggage is available at https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images that contains everything you might need.
Should you have any questions, our agents are standing by at the android-building Google Group. Complaints and suggestions can be filed at http://b.android.com. Volunteers can head to the android-contrib Google Group, and job applicants to http://google.com/jobs
Even if you’ve visited Jelly Bean before, you will notice that our graphics public transportation is now smoother and more energy-efficient. The city is also safer for everyone, with an entire block dedicated to children. Location Hill was renovated, and the repaving of Bluetooth Avenue continued all the way to BTLE Street and AVRCP 1.3 Park. Our filesystem garbage collection service can now handle active households that generate a lot of trash.
On behalf of all of Google Airlines and of our Android ground crew, captain Conley and cabin chief JBQ wish you a pleasant experience with Android 4.3 and we hope to see you again soon."
Let’s wait patiently!
If you have a nexus device and can't wait for OTA update, you can get the image file from Google right now!
I dont think new Android will make a brand new experience... Something bigger is preparing, I'm sure. The silence before the storm

I guess you mean 4.3, your Note 10.1 is currently on 4.2.2 if you are using Cyanomod 10.1
About 4.3, you can expect some improvements on multi user support (like blocking some apps for each user), a better phone app, the new gapps so the new camera and hopefully better battery performance. No big deal in my opinion

I believe he is asking about stock OTA update... doesn't seem like his using custom rom when asking like that,.
Hi everyone,
I believe we all would like to get 4.2/4.3 OTA update from Samsung. For people like me, multiwindow tasking is very important and I don't want to lose it with CM/AOKP. It is very weird that Samsung hasn't updated our Note 10.1. I still think it is by far the best choice in tablets world. Lets keep our fingers crossed, so Samsung updates directly to 4.3 (So then this delay feels reasonable) and also includes Multi-User.

4.4.2 was not affected by heartbleed. And Sprint announced the release date of 4.4.3 after heartbleed was announced publicly. So, no, I don't think it has anything to do with it. For all we know, 4.4.3 is right on schedule.

This update is becoming like the Sasquatch. Plenty of rumors, but nothing for months.. ..and this update has gone past all rumored dates which is rare.

just like every other update. and it going past all rumored dates.. again, just like every other update. rumors are rumors, nothing else. they arent based on anything factual, just what people THINK will happen. only google knows when the update will come, no one else.

All versions of Android are immune to CVE-2014-0160 (with the limited exception of Android 4.1.1; patching information for Android 4.1.1 is being distributed to Android partners)."
android is, linux at it's *heart* afterall, lol
I dont think we will see 4.4.3 soon...i think they release it close to their I/O and then wait for 4.5/5.0 version!!!
lol.. that's my prediction also..
way too much time has passed for a measly 4.4.3 bump, to think or expect that this far in the timeline, is sleeping on google's development team;
i think their working in over drive, to bring a 4.5 to fruition for the nexus 5, not to supersede a 5.0 i/o, & nexus 6,
THEN bring the 5.0 update to the nexus 5 afterwards..
