[Q] Couple of questions - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Hey guys i'm fairly new to the one x and i've done some reading, i've rooted, unlocked the bootloader and s-off i just have a couple of questions.
I see for aosp roms that you have to update the ruu to 3.18 how exactly do i do that? What would happen if i didn't update to the latest ruu and flashed the aosp rom anyway? I'm guess like status 7 recovery error?
and would the unlock, root and s-off stay? also, is it safe to ruu?
For aosp roms do you have to downgrade the touchpanel firmware?
Sorry for all the questions but coming from an s3 this stuff can get to be a lot and i just want to make sure i'm doing everything correctly.

Download the 3.18 RUU here. Put your phone into fastboot mode and connect to pc. Run the exe file. It's that simple. Just make sure no other programs are running, and screen saver/hibernation are disabled. If you don't do the RUU first, the ROMs will not boot.
Your unlocked bootloader and s-off status will survive the process. You will just need to flash TWRP recovery again.
You don't need to downgrade your ts firmware for the latest aosp ROMs. If you want to run an older aosp ROM, then yes you do.

Rooted on 1.73 not unlocked and want to flash ROM

Hi this is my first android phone, so I want to make sure I do this right.
Do I need to relock my bootloader after unlocking it to run 1.85 ruu?
If yes what am I actually upgrading in this step? If not, I can just flash 4.0.4/2.20 clean rom 4.5 after I have unlocked the bootloader?
Would the steps be like this?
1. 1 click change CID
2. Unlock from HTCdev
3. Flash TWRP recovery
4. Flash ROM?
Thanks!
Yep. If you're rooted then you have the right procedure. Skip 1.85
I believe that the only things that remain untouched by rooting, unlocking, and loading a custom rom are the radio (need to flash separately) and hboot (untouchable until we get s-off). (Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.)
I RUU'd to 1.82 when I unlocked but haven't done anything else since.
The newest roms incorporate the latest software versions. You don't want to update hboot to the latest version because they've change the security.
Thanks.
Should I flash the newer radio too? I can't seem to find it.

Radios are here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1694012
I would start with the one that matches your rom. You may feel like experimenting with others, as people have reported different results with different combinations. I am using the 2.20 radio with a 2.23-based rom.

[Q] RUU after S-OFF?

Hi everyone.
I've been having very bad problems with by battery life lately (I mean BAD) across nearly virtually all ROMs and configurations... so I'm thinking it's time to RUU and see if it solves the problem before sending my phone off.
Currently, I'm bootloader unlocked, SuperCID, S-OFF, rooted, custom recovery, etc.
I've done an RUU before, before I got S-OFF, and I know that if you have an unlocked bootloader you have to 're-lock' it before running the RUU.
Since I'm S-OFF, are there any other prerequisites to RUUing?
Can I simply re-lock my bootloader, RUU, then unlock my bootloader, root, and I'll be good?
And will I remain S-OFF throughout the RUU? Will my S-OFF mess anything up?

From what i understand, you don't even need to relock your bootloader, while S-OFF, but I did it anyway when I RUU'd.
RUUing will not mess with S-OFF or anything.
After RUUing, I also Took the latest OTA from Telus (I'm with Telus, you may not be) And I noticed ROMs using a 3.17 base run much smoother and with less bugs. I did not, however, notice much difference in battery life with AOSP roms.
Hope this helps ya

OK, so you mean that after RUUing, you took the OTA, and Sense 3.17 ROMs ran smoother and better than before you took the OTA?
I'm thinking about using the 3.18 RUU. Since I'm S-OFF, am I safe to use any RUU I want since I can revert easily?
As in, I can safely use the 3.18 RUU (which is currently regarded unrootable), and if it turns out to be bad I can just go back to an older RUU?
Basically, will using the 3.18 OTA/RUU mess anything up if I'm S-OFF?

Yes, I did find Viper and clean rom both ran much better than they did previously.
I'm sorry, I don't know about the 3.18 OTA... Hopefully someone else here can shed more light?
Theoretically, Since you're S-OFF, you should be able to update just fine. I haven't seen anyone actually do it yet though. I would test if I could.
I didn't relock I just ruu'd and after the process was done I just pushed twrp to my phone in fastboot and flashed viper. Only took a few mins top

If I decide to update to a complete 3.18 base, is it better to use a 3.18 RUU or OTA? And if I use the OTA, how exactly do I 'flash' it (it's a ZIP file). Do I just put it on the top level of my internal storage, and boot into recovery, and select 'update' or whatever?

OTA just downloads through the phone. IE: Go to settings about phone, check for updates and it updates. You don't have to do anything else, it prompts you and updates for you.
If there was already a 3.18 RUU that would be the fastest way. Telus is slow with releasing RUU's so I had to use ICS myself. Neither way should give you trouble.
Here's to hoping my phone doesn't brick. Running the RUU as we speak (bootloader unlocked, s-off, super-cid)...
Well it worked. Twrp 2.2.2.0 doesn't though. Ugh, 2.3x is so ugly.

[Q] Questions on RUU

Stock rooted 2.2, hboot 1.14, bootloader unlocked, S-Off, TWRP 2.3.3
I'm going to update to a newer ROM (Scott's CleanROM maybe, I like Sense) and I'd like to get the latest firmware and it seems that the easiest way to do that is to just run an RUU once rather than flashing multiple zips.
I've not run an RUU before so I'm a bit unclear what it does. I know it returns the phone to "stock" but some of the ancillary details aren't clear. Will it relock my bootloader? (Do I need to relock it before running the RUU?) Will it overwrite my recovery?
Should I run the latest RUU (3.18) before flashing a new ROM to get the lasted radios and other firmware? Or should I worry about that stuff after a new ROM? If I don't update the firmware and just flash a 4.1/4.2 ROM will that cause issues or instability?
No you don't need to relock sence you are s-off yes it will overwrite your recovery so after it is done you will need to fastboot a recovery with s-off you can run any ruu but I would recommend the newest one if you are going to run jb roms but you will need to downgrade your touchscreen firmware if you use aosp roms and older version of twrp there is a thread for that in original development

Most Roms Boot Loop - How to correct?

Hello.
I have an htc one xl (evita) which will not boot certain roms. I can boot some roms such as miui v5 and magiRom but I can not figure out why it will not boot roms such as CyanogenMod, ChameleonOS or TeamBaked BB9 as examples. These that will not boot will only boot loop and I'm going froot loop.
I am S-off, HBoot 1.09. Using TWRPv2.3.1.0.
I have tried TWRPv2.5, Hboot >1.09 and flashing boot.bin separately.
I have also tried some suggestions from these posts with no success so far ..

man i've looked at a lot of stuff regarding how to get to 3.18 but i keep finding a bunch of conflicting info that my brain is busted. If anyone can reply to some answers with my further info I would appreciate it...
My CID is 11111111
I'm S-off
hboot 1.09
What steps do I need to take to get to 3.18?
I can't seem to find a stock evita recovery image. My understanding is I need to relock boot loader, install stock recovery, upgrade to 3.18 and then restart the process of unlocking. Is this correct? Is the stock recovery located in an original at&t update?

1. Hboot will be at 2.14 - So if you wish, downgrade back to 1.09, otherwise you will need to flash the boot.img and then the rom when trying new roms.
2. The after market recovery (will now be oem recovery) will be gone so be sure to reinstall your preferred recovery (TWRP or CW)

It may be I am mistaken. I thought it was baked but i was also trying a rom I was trying to port. During the time i was flashing from 1.09 to 2.14 and also seen that baked required 2.14. So with all that going on i was just trying boot.img and then the rom to ensure no errors.

[Q] 1.73.502 ruu question

Background story:
I was trying to unlock and s-off 1.73 at&t one x phone with 1.09 hboot so that i could install a custom rom... Having experience with some other phones I prepared myself, software, drivers and everything else and plunged into action... I successfully unlocked the phone using a compilation of tutorials since it's so old bootloader and all, as for root i'm not sure I actually managed to get it work, it complained most of the time of missing bin files although I flashed su through recovery again and it settled down. I couldn't s-off it in any of the way tutorials were suggesting, gathering that i would have to update with some newer RUU, so I quit and phone is still s-on. And then I did an incredibly stupid thing, i didn't do nandroid backup, i just wiped system and tried to flash a new rom to no avail... None of the roms won't get flashed, i tryed sense and cm based ones, i'm getting some partition error, something about 2,14 and 2,15, not sure since error reporting is not consistent... Now I'm stuck within recovery and bootloader, i'm unlocked but s-on, i can't flash system img through fastboot nor a custom rom through adb sideload it says that partition is too small.
So question is what am I to do? What is my safest way out? Should i try flashing RUU (the one that should be the original one 1.73.502) or could I run some newer RUU and which would be preferable? If I'm to run RUU 1.73, should I run it as an exe or should I try to flash it as a zip file? Does it matter that the phone is unlocked and s-on? Why won't the smaller cm roms flash, how small could the partition be and does it have something to do with android version (4.1, 4.2 etc)?
To get a working ROM on your phone you can download an old build of cm and flash that. The new builds require updated firmware but the older builds don't. Go here and download the bottom build (stable cm10), and you'll need to get the 4.1 gapps package from here.
Sent from my Evita
What recovery and version number? I have a feeling this is recovery related, more than anything.
Also, newer builds of CM10.2 require hboot 2.14 or 2.15, so that is probably what the error message you mentioned is about.
We should be able to get you back up in and running on the custom ROM of your choice. But if you do decide to go the RUU route, in order to run an RUU, you must relock the bootloader in fastboot. Then you should be able to run the RUU. 1.73 RUU is fine. DO NOT run the 3.18, as there is a bug where with SuperCID and S-on (and you now have both) will BRICK THE PHONE. But the 1.73 or 1.85 RUUs will be fine.
Run the RUU as an .exe. I don't see the point in extracting and running the ROM.zip. You would just be making the process harder than it should be, and also removing some of the safeguards, if I remember properly.
S-off should work on any hboot version. I believe I got s-off while on hboot 1.09.
I'm running twrp 2.5.0.0 recovery, is there newer version? It never crossed my mind that it could something to do with recovery, so I never looked it up... Perhaps I could change it, it's not like that's gonna ruin chance of restoring any previous backups i didn't make...But i'd rather update the phone's firmware just to get those hboot glitches off the way because it, i'm quite sure, obstructed the s-off process (i was getting few 9x errors during s-offing, mostly 99).
So I'd be safe running 1.85 RUU. Is there some other RUU you would recommend, preferably some which will make the whole process of rooting, SuperCIDing and s-offing easier?
Thank you for helping me out!
edit> I tried flashing oldest CM and it worked! Then, feeling safe and all, I flashed newest twrp recovery and then, to my utter amazement, it flashed other rom I was aiming for... So thanks, for that recovery tip, it saved me a lot of pain! Now all is left for me is to figure out that s-off thing...
