I just ordered a refurbed tf300t w/ the keyboard dock. I'm looking to root it and install cm pretty quickly. From what i can gather there are some problems with the 4.2 bootloader and cm. Can some one point me in the direction of a guide to unlock the bootloader and which twrp to install. I figure since its refurbed it's probably on 4.2.
everything on the forums i found is for 4.1 or less. also is there a reason this tablet isnt a stable cm10.1 device?

On this tablet don't get in a hurry for anything. When you verify (absolutely) the bootloader version (ICS(4.0), JB(4.1), JB(4.2 10.6.1.8), or JB(4.2 10.6.1.15.3) then you can begin to read and plan.
Here is a link to many things you will need including the two apps for unlocking the bootloader.
While there don't forget to thank philos64. You will use this thread many times while owning this tablet.
Unlocking is simple. Run the proper app for your bootloader version as explained in the above thread. Two apps for the four bootloaders.
Which twrp etc depends on the bootloader in use.
Good Luck!
Go slow, do your homework, and play safe or this tablet will leave you in the dust (there are many, many bricks to prove it).
I don't know about the current cm10 and stability when it went multi user (10.1) I started looking for other roms.
Just my desire not problems with 10.1.
I'm also new to this device and after unlocking just followed this today:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=42005728&postcount=91
Changed a couple of things, such as TWRP version and flashed CM10.1 instead of the one in the example. All I changed from the guide linked were the files used, based on thoroughly reading other topics first.

I'm partial to CROMi.
I'm afraid rom choice is mostly personal. For my use all versions of CROMi have been solid and you have many options during install to customize as you like.
okay so i just got my tf300t today, I'm on JB 4.1.1. what is the best course of action asfar as stock updates? i dont plan on rooting for a couple days to get used to the stock interface.

My favorite stock rom is 10.4.2.20.
If you intend unlocking and flashing a custom rom you might want to update to the proper bootloader for that rom while you still have stock recovery (not twrp).

Bootloaders have been an issue on this tablet since 4.1 (JB) arrived.
I swap at will between the JB bootloaders using stock recovery - next bootloader up or down.
Yes, be careful! Match bootloader, rom and twrp.
Here are the bootloaders, stock roms, and twrp- now you have to match your custom rom.
4.1 bootloader - 10.4.2.9, 10.4.2.13, 10.4.2.17, 10.4.2.18, 10.4.2.20 - twrp openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.0-tf300t-JB.blob
4.2 bootloader - 10.6.1.8 - twrp openrecovery-twrp-2.4.4.0-tf300t-4.2.blob
4.2.1 bootloader - 10.6.1.15.3 - twrp openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.0-tf300t-4.2.blob
I'm confused just reading this mess.

First I must say I rate roms by how compatible they are and if everything I use works without issues including lag.
The link I provided for CROMi shows a score of 6214 in the first post (op).
I notice there is at least one other CROMi listed which I have not tried. The CROMi by sbdags also provides other kernel options for more speed and other enhancements.
I'm sure someone else will respond with the fastest kernel for this rom as it is very popular.

yeah im noticing a bit of lag on 4.2.1 i dont know if its the rom or hardware, I must say I absoloutly love this tablet. Coming from an og nook color and a kindle fire this is leagues better.
The tablet screen shots on the page are from the tf700, if you look at the build number, so that quadrent score is probably not a good representation of our tablet.
Other than that the stock rom is fine but, I'm always looking for better performance.
For better performance I would reccomend cromi-x it is WAY smoother then stock, but based on stock.

I see so many threads about rooting while on jellybean. What do i need to do to root on ics? The plan is to root and then use a custom jb rom. Thanks for your help.
Any help with my n00b post would be great.
Look for the debugfs method in the Dev section. That works on ICS but not jb as loopholes are closed on jb.

You can't use a JB rom custom or stock while you have ICS bootloader and updating to JB may remove root ( mine didn't ) and will certainly remove a custom recovery ( CWM or Twrp ). You have to unlock to install custom rom or recovery so if you are sure you wish JB custom rom why not update to JB and start from there?
Unlock, custom recovery for JB ( Twrp is my choice ), custom rom flashed with Twrp. I have not flashed any custom roms for the TF300 that weren't already rooted.
Good Luck!:good:
Yep, I am probably going to just go ahead and upgrade. I thought when I read that there was an advantage to being on ICS (for custom ROM purposes) but it doesn't seem to be the case. So I will get fully updated and then go from there.
Thanks!

The possible advantages are NVFlash, cm9, cm10, etc. At this time no CM, AOSP, AOKP, Paranoid Android, and so on for the JB bootloader. Everything ( rom ) is based on the stock kernel. It is being worked on but not ready for release yet. The dreaded i/o issue on JB and probably others.
If I were in your shoes I'd stay on ICS for now and wait a while for things to sort out. On ICS I'd run CM10 or Hydro for ICS. Those are just my feelings.
Take your time and look around a bit more if you have any doubts.
If you are ready then by all means go for it!
:good:Good Luck!
Thanks for all your help. I did go ahead and make the jump to JB. Currently on CleanROM but have no idea which of the "big 3" I should run. I suppose I will have to try them all and see. Wish there was a good pro/con list of each ROM that I could reference.

The biggest con of running JB is that Adobe has removed support for flash from JB in anticipation of forcing everyone to go use HTML5. You also cannot use the NVFlash method of backing up some crucial files as a safety net (the developers claim that using NVFlash makes your device brickproof).
I am still waiting for the kinks in JB to be worked out before I switch. I'm on ICS bootloader still and I can run a JB custom ROM (Baked Blackbean) just fine, so I can have my cake and eat it too. I can try out the JB changes without making a full commitment.
Just my two cents.
I have 2 TF700's in my family. They both have the problem.
The stock browser and alot of third party browsers keep giving me this error "browser not responding" and then gives me the option to "wait" or "close".
Is this common among the TF700's?
Is there a solution?

I am guessing you are pure stalk? then yes it seems to be a stock Rom problem. You can usually click "wait" and it will come back but not always. The only solution I know is flashing back to ICS and rooting, or unlocking(which voids ASUS warranty), flash a custom recovery, and flash CleanRom. cyanogen, or a different custom rom.

it's hard to believe since this tablet got such rave reviews.
BTW what's the difference between "unlocking" and "rooting"?

Not all people seem to report this problem but I never had success with the stock rom. And yes quite a few others have similar problem but not all. I have heard the newest version of Chrome has fixed lots of lag browsing wise, try it if you have not already. When the tf700 first came out it was the first of its kind, HD screen, Keyboard Dock, Decent sized CPU and GPU. But being so introduced new problems.
Rooting gives you administer privileges and it will make you be able to install browser2ram which increases the speed of your browser tremendously.
Unlocking is unlocking the bootloader, which voids the asus warranty, and allows you to install a custom recovery, which then allows you to install other roms. Custom roms like Cromi and Cyanogen come prerooted. Custom roms fix many issues but also create some new ones.

Your right, Chrome does work better, but Chrome doesn't support plugins like ( ie. flash) which makes some content not work.
I'm guessing rooting on the tablets are different than rooting on the smartphones since you need to install custom recovery in order to root a smartphone.
So what issues do the custom roms bring to the table?; I hope the advantages are worth the trouble.

Rooting does not require unlocking your boot loader. It just requires you to flash stock ice cream sandwich, root, then install ota rootkeeper, once you have that done you can upgrade to the latest android and restore the root. You cannot root Jelly bean directly. You dont need a custom recovery to root ICS, but you cannot root Jelly Bean directly .
Custom roms bring few issues to the table as long as you follow the procedures. You must first use ASUS' unlock tool, then install a recovery via fastboot, and you should be good. However if you consider unlocking I would look through all the posts of people who have messed up their devices so you dont make the same mistake. As long as you have the 10.4.4.25 bootloader and a jellybean compatible recovery you wont have problems. That seems to be the main issue when people brick their tf700's. People installing jelly bean when they do not have compatible recoveries / boot loaders.

The only custom rom WILL NOT give you any trouble but 100% faster and smoother is Clean Rom (ppl called it CROMI) currently at version 3.4.4. This is stock rom with supercharge installed. It will be night and day between stock and CROMI. You would be glad and kick yourself in the bud that you didn't use this rom sooner! and your stock browser once again will be the best browser.

You can't compare phone S3 with Asus tablet. They have different hardward bootloder etc..There is NO ODIN for tf700. In S3 you need to Odin insecure bootloader in order to root and flash custom recovery. There is no loop hole in tf700 while you're on JB (Asus patched), but there is in ICS. So if you just want root, you need to downgrade back to ICS. If you're on JB the only way you can root or flash custom recovery is to unlock your device, this allow you to use fastboot function in JB bootloader to flash custom recovery (TWRP,CWM), then use custom recovery to flash root(SuperSU) or pre-rooted custom rom.

That is a very personal decision. It was worth it to me. Instead of getting annoyed by my TF700 a dozen times a day and enjoying a warranty I may never need, I now have a tablet that runs like a dream!!
And the support the dev and others on the CROMI thread provide puts Asus to shame - easily.
When you use the Asus unlock tool it phones home to Asus servers. From then on they know that your specific tablet is unlocked. Also says so on the boot screen. And no way to reverse it, btw.

Personally I dont know any advantage on ICS over JB as I never put ICS on my tablet. Cromi is the stock asus rom, broken apart, then rebuilt. It contains the same layout and some asus stock apps however since it has different internals and all bloatware is gone is makes most if not all lag disappear. Yes we are disappointed but it is easily solved after you put a different Rom on it. Also the support for Cromi is MUCH better tehn any support ASUS could provide. To be mad at ASUS does no good. The only option if you are that disappointed it to send them back or modify the tablet yourself. Cromi and cyanogen put the stock rom to shame, and both have better support.

You can always wait and hope for the JB 4.2 release. The TF300 got it and a lot of owners seem to report much better performance and less lag. Compared to the stock 4.1 of course....

For me and most of us here, yes unlocking is well worth it.
and NO, you don't need root to flash back to ICS, just download Asus full firmware ICS .30 version, unzip it then copy it to the root of your MICROsdcard and it will flash back to ICS (some cases, you need to rename the file to EP201_768_SDUPDATE.zip then boot into stock recovery in order to work) . Once you're back on ICS, debugfs root tool will help you to achieve root.
Thanks for the education guys.
Can CROMI ( CleanRom) play flash content, though?
What are the other advantages, other than being smooooge?
Is CROMI made specifically for the TF700?

During the installation of Cromi, sbdags put the flashplayer into the setup, so yes flash is supported on Cromi, by default unless you choose not to install it. Cromi is made for other devices but Cromi in the tf700 part of the forums is made specifically for the tf700. The speed is the main advantage, also it is pre rooted, and the support if you have a problem is great.

Just saw a new twrp 2.5.0.0 posted in the development section. Does anyone know if using it will cause any issues since I have ths sbdags patched bootloader with 2.4.4.4. I certainly don't want to brick. I'm currently running CROMi-X v4.2 (and loving it). Thanks in advance!

I confirmed that 2.5.0.0 should work fine with old or new bootloader.
Thanks
Thanks for getting back to me on this. I went ahead and used GooMgr to install the new TWRP. Booted into and made new system backup. Everything works like a charm. Now I'm really looking forward to CROMi-X with 10.6.1.14 full rom.

AWESOME :highfive:
Finally docked!!
WOOT Just got my tf700 dock and I'm all set for the new rom when it comes out!! Life's good. This device is shaping up to be one of the best devices I've ever owned... aside from my killer gaming desktop of course. As far as mobile devices though, this one is the cat's meow!
Cheers
This is an awesome device but why aren't there any roms out for this device I see one but that it..would like to see some development progress for this device please

User's from the mini/ultra/maxx all use this forum since it's all basically the same phone... If you're on the Ultra there is one custom ROM available in the development section as they belong...the only ROM I've seen is the PAC ROM, provides much customization and lots of features... Our ultra and I believe the other two models do not have an unlocked boot loader so you can't flash a custom ROM or kernel without that...if you have the Dev version of the maxx then you can go ahead and unlock your boot loader and enjoy the Rom(s)

i have safestrap installed, so i could flash ROM's, but im not interested in the very initial stages of ROM's...but am i right where i could flash it?
im in the middle of the OTA update right now anyways..so bye root for now...
Well the ota can be rooted and I have safe strap as well but without an unlocked boot loader you cannot flash Roms or kernel's... Having safestrap does not mean you can flash away, the boot loader is what matter's buddy. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news...but if you want root after the ota check out the development section... Jcase already has taken care of that

im new to android flashing, and bootloaders and all of that, but im only going off of my past experiences with my droid 4.
what i thought: a locked bootloader meant no custom kernels. as long as i have a custom recovery such as safestrap, i could flash ROM's, which is why there are ROM slots. i had eclipse ROM on my droid 4 even though that had a locked bootloader.
where am i getting confused? did the rooting process take care of the bootloader? or did ss bypass that?

You're right, you can flash roms with a locked bootloader. However you cannot flash a kernel (boot image) with a locked bootloader. So far though, no stock based roms that I know of for this phone. I don't know if that's because safestrap is still in beta or what.

There aren't custom ROMs because there isn't a need for one, IMO.
This is the cleanest, most stable, coolest OS I've ever experienced anywhere.
I can't imagine a custom ROM out there that I would prefer.

as with the ROM i had with my droid 4, the ROM isnt definitely something completely different from the factory. it could be de-bloated, include apps that work well with the device, disable/remove apps that nobody uses. tidy up the framework of the stock ROM.
i would love a pre-cleaned ROM, wifi tether, or really just a deodexed ROM at this point.

The droid 4 used a method called kexec which highjacked the boot process and allowed a custom bootloader to run instead of the phones locked bootloader. Hashcode has stated that kexec may never work for the new moto line but there's always hoping. This is why I just ordered the developers edition.

i thought without an unlocked bootloader you could not install custom roms, i knew you couldn't with kernels but i thought no roms either... i am mistaken i assume by the response of the others, or can you not do either? Either way, if you can't use a custom kernel then most custom roms will not work anyhow

Incorrect. The Droid X had a locked bootloader, but it had a fairly large dev community. No custom kernels, but there was a good amount of ROM's available.

That would mean roms either came with no kernel baked in or they used to stock kernel then. I never had a phone without the boot loader being unlockable that being said how the devs and community spoke it came off as without it being that way no ROM was flashable but it was likely due to that most Roms come with a kernel baked in which is usually not stock. Anyway, thanks for correcting and informing me. Having a locked boot loader is new to me.
So I assume if I can manage to remove the kernel from the ROM zip I could flash the PAC ROM in our development section?
Sent from Ahjee's phone which is likely better than your lesser phone that doesn't have as many processors and can't run games as smoothly as this beast of a phone does stock

I believe (at least on the DX) flashing just didn't touch the kernels at all, so we were always running the stock kernel. But I'm not a dev, so don't quote me.
On the droid x and RAZR (prior to kexec) all ROMs were built using the stock kernel. The doid x had an official cm build using the stock kernel. Using the stock kernel for custom ROMs like cm makes it much more difficult to get everything going smooth because the kernel has been optimized to work with the stock ROM which may be a couple versions of android behind.

Look at this post from the nook color thread. Unlocked boot loader with awesome devas equals a device that never dies. The nook color is currently on 4.3 and will probably get 4.4 before long.
That's right. Big ups to Cicadaman for that first Froyo port, "Nookie Froyo", which was invaluable for helping get that first CM7 (gingerbread) build booting (like months and months before GB showed up officially in BN's bastardized android, I might add!) Dalingrin joined in soon after and we and a few others got it polished together.... God, this was what, late 2010 or early 2011. It's hard to believe Android didn't even have even basic tablet support for soft buttons... requiring Tablet Tweaks... Oh, how time flies... :silly: ...and the nook color is still kickin'...

not a stupid question dude, there's a lot going on with these phones and it takes to get educated and even more to be properly educated haha...things i think i know, i don't as you can tell lolol but the kernel is the engine so to speak, it's what makes the ROM or OS run how it does...the kernel has a bigger affect on battery life than the rom itself, well in my opinion but it's really a combination of the two together.
The kernel is what controls the CPU and GPU frequencies and whatnot

You guys say they're basically the same phone so everyone uses one forum, so can we install ROMs made for the other Droid devices?
My guess is probably not, so WHY are they not separated- silliest thing they could have done- I had to track this forum down over a week after I thought XDA just didn't support the Droid Maxx, and still don't understand what's going on.
I also have the same question as the OP: How can there not be a full root process/massive ROM list already for the Maxx with such a big community and such a popular phone line?
We're still waiting on a proper root
That said, anyone have any fun alternatives until then? Favorite/not well-known launchers or other themes?
PS Anyone have an Aviate Launcher invite left?
Thanks!

Hi Guys,
I have just brought a TF700, and I have set up 3 user profiles, but it is very unstable even after i have disabled all of the unused apps.
From what I have been reading it would appear my best option is to put a custom rom on it.
Now i have achieved this kind of thing in the past as I put Android on a HTC HD2 many moons ago.
I currently have a HTC One and i love the OS on that which is 4.3, so i was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a 4.3 Rom that is fairly close to what i have on the HTC One for my TF700.
Thanks in advance
You didn't say which rom you put on your HTC
CM 10.2 emulates JB 4.3, I believe Paranoid and OMNI ROM also have 4.3 versions, but most of the devs seem to have moved on to KitKat (CM11), but it still seems to be somewhat buggy and slow at this point.

Thanks for coming back.
I haven't changed anything on my HTC One at moment because I am more than happy with how it is performing.
I will take a look, but once again thanks.
I have been looking at various threads, but I am still a bit undecided on which way to go.
Anyone else that has wanted to update to 4.3 have any tips or advise for me?
I wouldnt mind eventually going down the 4.4 route, but as I have only just got the tablet - I would firstly like to flash it to something more stable than it currently is.
Many Thanks
What really could help to speed up your TF700t is a factory restart.
For me it was really helping a lot .... even if i am right now "only" on rooted stock FW.
Try this as well.

I have only just brought it, and it was back to factory default, but I did it agin before puting all my apps that I wanted on.
And it was very slow and unstable then, but I then disabled all of the preinstalled apps that I didnt want to use, and it is better, but because I have heard that 4.3 does use less memory I still think it would be worth a try.

I am not sure why you think 4.3 is so much better than 4.2.1. AFAIK that was not a major update or improvement....
If you are looking for a fast and totally stable rom for this tablet, go for CROMi-X! It's based on the Asus firmware 4.2.1 for this tablet, so everything is optimized for THIS device. CM roms are generic. They run a on a multitude of devices - that's why you have more bugs and conflicts

Not that I'm aware of. It was a pretty minor upgrade. Kit Kat 4.4 offers far more interesting features.

I have to admit I like the look of the 4.3 more, but decided to upgrade to the CROMi-X one, and then wait for the 4.4 - which I did last night and I am very impressed - it is loads smoother.
So Thanks for your advise.

Nahhh - only tried it as ROM2SD. And it's still sleeping on some of my sd cards.
I was not impressed. CM didn't add anything but eye candy (I didn't care for) and I think by now CROMi-X in conjunction with Xposed modules (if you care for those and the performance hit they come with) gives you way more options to customize this tablet than CM.... not even mentioning your tweaks!

CROMi-X is just the nickname for CROMi-Xenogenesis (who wants to write that all the time???). CROMi 3.5 would be just a minor step up from what yo got now...
Latest and greatest version of CROMi-X is 5.2.4. But you are on an outdated bootloader and no doubt an old recovery.
So head over to the CROMi-X thread, grab the bootloader/TWRP package sbdags provided in the OP and download the rom (dl both to your microSD)
Boot into TWRP and do a Factory Wipe - that will wipe your apps, but not your data (but you got everything backed up anyway, right????)
Flash the bootloader/TWRP package and reboot
Boot back into TWRP and flash the ROM
