[DEV][KERNEL] Let's COMPILE a NEW Kernel FOR HTC ChaCha [a810e / Status]! - HTC ChaCha

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=42536090&postcount=9
As HTC CHACHA user, We have long stopped relying on HTC to support HTC CHACHA.
Let's get started. Let's compile a new kernel for HTC ChaCha!
Here are my thoughts :
Because I'm not sure which version of linuxkernel is a good start. so let's assume 3.x.xx is the new version.
And the difference between the two versions(chacha-gb-crc-2.6.35-1643b58 & linux-3.x.xx.tar.gz) is too large,
It may require us to apply the changes manually.

AM I Correct?
I've been taken this boring part (diff chacha-gb-crc-2.6.35-1643b58.tar.gz linux-2.6.35.10.tar.gz),
AND I have already completed. Boring Boring Boring. AND I have checked it again again again.
So you can trust. There are no mistakes. EOL.
https://github.com/Luzifer1984/diff_chacha_kernel
You will find out more information about ChaCha in "kconfig"
Following is the key to transplant:
1.Circumspection: Attitude determines success
2.Skill: Linux Kernel
3.A modicum of luck: Right now we have no more hardware information about HTC ChaCha.
Step1.Transplant Linux kernel
Step2.Integrate and Modify
TOOL
1.Windows: WinMerge OR BeyondCompare
2.Linux: Meld OR BeyondCompare
Potential problems, and possible solutions:
Let's take HTC CHACHA for example.
Differences between linux-3.x.xx.tar.gz and chacha-gb-crc-2.6.35-1643b58.zip caused problems.
when the differences are big to complete files, that seem daunting and maybe even impossible. don't panic when you see that. You must be particularly careful
AND
The following principles should be respected as far as possible:
1. It would be even better if you could copy the hardware-related source code from old version to new version
2. About hardware-related source code, if old version and new version had changed same file (same file name) with different content. then we base the old version.
Because old ones did work. Old hardware-related source code got CHACHA working well.
3. source code unrelated as hardware, We should use the new one. as possible. (kernel's update)
4. if the file is difficult for you to conceive how to deal with , u should MARK and skip it.
Let's get simple tasks done first. And complete some tasks that you are absolutely sure what will happen.
Then come back to deal with the previously skipped files. This part may require us to diff other sources to get the right way.
4.1 reference sources from other devices, like LG Optimus Me P350 /ZTE Blade/ HTC Wildfire S (MSM7227 Armv6 Adreno200)
4.2 kernel.org updated kernel which caused the difference . we should find the difference between linux-3.x.xx.tar.gz & linux-2.6.35.10.tar.gz(diff)
About trade secrets and patents involved, I think there is no way to avoid. So let's forget it!
Please think about this idea and let us know what you think.
Does anybody know what i meant? Sorry for my poor English. Maybe you could convey my word meaning and revise this post.
@Adumont You are a good developer. good at English ang Git. expert in android.
Could you lead us to take it further? I like chacha so much.

You might want to change @ adumont part to @adlx.xda

name tool used to "cut" room??
I also want to study more about the room
tkss

I can't be of much help, but check out the Atrix 4G kernel port project. It's goal is identical to this and they made tremendous progress. Obviously it will be different for the ChaCha, but the steps that need to be done will be similar.
Consider contacting the developers behind it.

i can do what ever help i can, but remember i am a newbee with full passion to improve chacha !

You know, all of our problem with chacha-gb-crc-2.6.35 is camera driver... I have worked on chacha-gb-crc-2.6.35 before, but I got no satisfactory result of it. even i used some of other HTC phone's KERNELs, but i exactly got no result. we should just wait till HTC want to do something about this forgotten:crying: phone.

HTC won't do anything.
Also I'm pretty sure that the OP got CM10.1 with fully working camera.

But with this kerenls, we can't make a stable ROM. Htc just talk about android 4.0. I hope that htc will release 4.1 or 4.2 and maybe 4.3 for chacha...

Yes, we can make a stable ROM.
No, they will not release any updates for the chacha.

Sorry if I'm reviving an old thread.
I downloaded the three files found on your folder and as I have understood, linux-2.6.35.10.tar.gz + diff.patch = chacha-gb-crc-2.6.35-1643b58.tar.gz, isn't it??

Are experienced with ROM development and with Chacha?
I'm interested to make a new ROM for it but I'm totally new, if you would like that we work together please let me know.
Also regarding the small internal memory for Chacha, how do you overcome it? Link2SD isn't a solution.

Forum Dead?
Has there been any progress made on the kernel builds at all? There are far less phones with a qwerty keyboard that can even run a custom ROM nowdays. Obviously HTC is not supporting the phone anymore anyway, so I think it is about time we had at least a functioning kernel!

Not to be pessimisstic but I guess 4.2.2 is as far as we can get as a stable ROM ajeeval has been working on kit kat according to a post I read but it's way more complicated to achieve a stable version.

[DEV] Porting Photon kernel 2.6.32 here

Hi all developers, i open this thread about porting kernel for photon here. Im working on it and here is interested stuf about bcm4329

good link, will follow it!
i'm sure we can find useful stuff on 2.6.32 and backport on 2.6.29.
differences between arch/arm/msm on both versions are quite big, thus im not sure how easy it is to upgrade photon kernel.
i found a way to get some terminal console and some debug outbut:
just install the HTC Sync for HTC Aria, it gives you the USB ADB driver: link here
Then, in a command window, execute following commands:
Code:
adb devices => tells you if your device is recognized
adb shell => launch a basic linux shell
type "dmesg" to have the debug message
"dmesg | /bin/more" to have the same but page by page (press space enter to go next page)
you can also install android applications:
adb install <name of file>
Click to collapse
at first look, you can see the kernel is compiled with loaaads of debug output.
and we can already see a recurrent segfault that might be the cause of some of the issues we have.
Note: adb.exe enclosed in zip file of this message
Maybe it's a good idea to make a list of all issues we experience at this moment in the first post. That way, we can handle them one by one
This is my list now:
- Battery driver doesn't work.
- Maybe that has to do with the battery driver, but when I use my device with Android for about a half an hour (Angry Birds), the back side comes very warm...
- Data not working (WiFi and GPRS as well)
- Buttons need realignment
- Sometimes it happens that when I turn my device off just with the power button, the lights under the hardware keys keep going.

yes, we need to implement cotulla's patch
seems he duplicated the "liberty" files to "photon" in arch/arm/msm and did light modifications
we can do a diff vs the htc aria official source code to have it all

Attention!
i do not want to pick at cotulla, but in fact we want to use his changes for another port it is to say: his code is kind of mess
you can really see that he stopped working on it instantly..
Either someone cleans this up or you will really have to understand what he intended to do!

we need to be thankful that he even released the working haret for us

agree with you.
i'm not sure every single modification is required (code looks like "modif here, compile and see if it works better"), but it's incredible chance to have a working source code and we all thanks cotulla for his work. this way we have a chance to have a clean code starting from the liberty/aria source code.
it seems he tried to investigate the wifi issue (many wifi files modified compare to liberty) but with no luck.
in the kernel configuration he released, he said we could get the kernel debug traces on the PC.
do you guys know how to get it? plugging usb cable when android is booting does not seems to help.
reason I'm asking is, it seems there are lot of debug informations available but so far i cannot access to them...

Htc Evo Design 4g & Hero S Discussion Thread

Ok since there isn't one thread dealing with these two phones I am starting one. Then at least people can find stuff or dicuss the said phone. I will add any useful links and how to's to this post and posts there after. Any way on to what we got....
How to root your Evo Design 4g or Hero S:
There is a few ways out there from manual to auto. If you are wanting temp root you will need to look at zergrush. Which the link I don't have right off. If you want perm-root you can use either of the following tools.
My One Click Perm-Root & Busybox Installer tool/script (Sorry no linux help at the moment. Windows only) Confirmed on many devices also:
http://2fastroms.com/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=2485
Frigid's HTC Super Tool v2 (I can't confirm it works, how ever looks like it does. Followed by some nice options):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1343114
How to unlock your Evo Design 4g or Hero S:
This isn't really a guide as htc has a good one. How ever I am going to add to it. You need to go to the following link http://htcdev.com/ , Once there click the unlock bootloader. You will be asked for you login info, if you don't have a account you need to make one. As you are starting through the instructions you will see you need to install adb to continue. How ever you can down my script, cd the tools directory, which will have adb. Drivers are also in the thread for my perm-root tool. Then all you need to do is get the fastboot from the sdk 13 linked in htc's guide. Followed by put it into the tools directory of my script. That or do it the way htc has you do it. Either will be fine and get the job done.
Now this may not happen to you but did for me. Where after pulling the token the phone froze. I had to do a battery pull, reboot to h-boot and select fastboot again. Where I was able to continue pushing the unlock file.
Kernel's for Evo Design 4g or Hero S:
Don't know any or if source was released yet. If not start bugging htc for source code....
Recovery's for Evo Design 4g or Hero S:

Anything else that you may think would be useful. You can post it or pm me to get it added.
Reserved....
Reserved.....
Then one more for good measure....
I've been sending HTC an email every two days asking for source since getting the Design. I don't expect to see any movement before the end of the year, but it'd be helpful to get some more squeaky wheels out there.
Any tips or suggestions when writing such an email?
Sent from my *rooted* EVO Design using xda premium app
Even though I hate to say it but you aren't going to get anywhere e-mailing them. It takes a person 2 secs to copy and paste 1 of 3 generic e-mails. You are better off calling and asking about the kernel source. As even a short call will last 5 mins, which means more out of htc's pocket.
Was the only way the htc merge source got released
Is it safe to just ask for the design kernel or do we need to ask for the hero kernel also? Anything else we should ask while on the phone, or just keep it on 1 request?

Politely request access to the kernel source for the HTC Evo Design 4g per the terms of the General Public License version 2, under which the source in question has been published.
The official way to contact HTC is here: http://www.htc.com/us/about/contact-by-email
HTC is infamous for dragging their feet on source requests, but has shown that they can be pressured into doing so more quickly if folks make some noise. You can also try by phone, which may yield faster results.
EDIT: Asking for the Hero S source would be fine, too. Although I think both devices are covered by a single kernel config (Kingdom)
Would have to agree completely. How ever the hero s/design 4g should be the same kernel source. Though curious what is your guys kernel version?

According to that I am guessing that would be the design. Where everything is the same cept the letters after 10-. Where the hero is running a newer kernel by a month.

The stock Hero S image above does appear to work. Rename to PH44img.zip. Copy to the root of your SD. Boot into the bootloader and allow it to install.
Can someone post the stock:

Just want to verify what I have after flashing the posted stock image compared to a truly stock device.
Thank you

After weeks of emails to HTC, I have received their boilerplate "within 90-120 days" response along with an invitation for further comment. Now on to the next step...
---
I am very sorry to hear this, as I expected a different answer. Is HTC aware that it is violating GPLv2 with this policy, and leaving itself open to enforcement action by the Free Software Foundation?
Please refer to Section 4.1.2 of the compliance guide, which states that source must be made available at the time that a device is shipped with an offer of source. Below, I have provided a URL as well as cited the relevant portion for review.
It would be regrettable for me to have to refer this matter to the FSF for enforcement action. Hopefully further review will clarify where HTC is incorrect in its source distribution policy, and corrections can be made to avoid non-compliance issues.
Regards
---
http://www.softwarefreedom.org/resources/2008/compliance-guide.html
Finally, it is unacceptable to use option (b) merely because you do not have Corresponding Source ready. We find that some companies chose this option because writing an offer is easy, but producing a source distribution as an afterthought to a hasty development process is difficult. The offer for source does not exist as a stop-gap solution for companies rushing to market with an out-of-compliance product. If you ship an offer for source with your product but cannot actually deliver immediately on that offer when your customers receive it, you should expect an enforcement action.

Hopefully HTC will release the source code soon and if we are extra lucky they will release something for the ImageSense chip too!
Been busy lately but I really want to work on this.

xkonni is doing a lot more than me for the moment, but Im hoping to find time to work on it later this week. I figured its better to get all other stuff squared away so that I can sit down and focus on this instead of trying to do everything at once
good news!
i just saw that the kernel sources for the one v are on htcdev.com ready for download ... i guess this means that we shouldn't have to wait too long for the one s kernel sources

maybe but i would not bet on that.
the one v uses the 8255 chipset, for that there are already many devices out while for our msm8960 the one s is the first.
they might keep the source back because of that.
but of course i hope they dont

so you think that htc doesn't want to "help" other manufacturers with their kernel adaptations?
possible but i can't imagine what htc would gain by holding the kernel code back on purpose. actually i think that since the community is always fixing their bugs and issues they can only profit from an early release of the code ... but let's see and hope that you are wrong

It makes more sense to work on Cm based roms, because all the code is availible. HTC on the other hand hide their framework and drivers code, that is essential to port newer versions of sense to our phone. Which makes it nearly impossible to do it.

First we have to port CM on our Phone.
It will bring us all the drivers to let it boot.
After that, with all basics and stuff we can port Senny and Ubuntu ^^
We just have to learn which kernel and boot images we have to write and what exactly we have to port/compile/write.
Let's make a list what we have to do ^^
I am starting with:
1. Kernel
2. recovery (cwm)
Btw I am writing a list on paper. So tell me every time if you want to see it ^^

Guys, we need better method to communication. I recommend Google+ Hangouts. We can make group on it and talk about development and here only give users informations and status about progress. What do you think?
PS. I'm setting Ubuntu right now and preparing to sync repos

/Edit: I got it now. I am stupid...
There is no difference in kernel and boot.img
Kernel, the heart of the OS, is the boot.img itself.
It brings the OS bootable and connects Hardware with System. (I think it's the right explanation of it..)
Thanks xpirt!
xQubee5o3 said:
I don't know how to explain it, but I will try it.
The kernel is called "the heart of your OS". It brings your OS usable.
The boot image is the image to get your OS bootable.
You have to write the image from ROM to ROM, from OS to OS again and again. (there must be any difference.)
Kernel -> Heart of OS
Boot.img -> To bring the OS booted.

Mmmm interesting.. if you have this idea of the difference between boot.img and kernel I think you can leave this project for now.
Let me explain you that there is no difference between them and you can edit your post leaving only one of them.
boot.img = ramdisk + zImage (compiled kernel source)
Well I hope that this explanation can be just an input to learn seriously development if you want to continue this project and have some results.
With that i don't want to spam the thread, so.. good luck!

Custom ROM and Kernel

A9 owners speak up!! This is for all A9 owners and would be A9 owners who would love to see development of AOSP and CM based ROMS. GPE port from the M8 and any other ROMS. As well custom Kernels like ElementalX. Thanks to @jcase we have S-off, modified boot image for disabling forced encryption and allowing root and @Chainfire we have SuperSu and @Captain_Throwback and @Dees_Troy we have TWRP. A million thanks to all involved in the development so far. I would just love to get a feel for how many users out there are waiting for and would help support the development of custom ROMS and kernels! Let the wishful thinking be heard :good:
Also love to hear from developers! Progress, status updates etc etc
UPDATE: First ROM is now here! Thanks to @Captain_Throwback Located here!!! http://forum.xda-developers.com/one...9-base-roms-recovery-flashable-t3282335/page4
I wil definitly would love some customs kernel
I am waiting for this from Beginning. Can not wait anymore. .
:laugh::good:
Thanks
Okkkayy!! So I knew the fan base for this device was low compared to say the M7 and M8 but didn't realize it was this low Expected to hear WAY more than this!!
I've been waiting as well.

Well, one thing I don't like is that it now requires your pattern or pin to unlock the device after a reboot where as before after a reboot it would unlock with the just the finger print reader It can now read the new 6.0.1 emoji-cons but still cant send them. They just don't show up in the keyboard. I want to pop my verizon SIM into it and see if anything changed there. Still testing otherwise. Haven't noticed that much else.

Soo, no changes on verizon.. Still shows LTE logo with no bars and LTE data works but to voice or text. With AT&T however, VoLTE seems to now be working on all calls, not just other users on AT&T on iPhone 6's and 6s's which is very exciting!! LTE works during all phone calls.. See screen shots.
What about a bounty for a custom rom ?
Why do you think we are here on XDA?!?! Of course we want custom Roms and Kernels!!!!
Thanks

I thought I was the OP of the A9 TWRP thread, not @Dees_Troy?
(or course without him, we wouldn't have TWRP at all)
I'm surprised there aren't at least any stock rooted ROMs floating around the Development forum. I did post one earlier today in someone else's thread, but I'm not sure how much exposure that's going to get. As far as AOSP ROMs go, the good thing is that there is a bit less Sense on the A9 than on previous devices (more like a GPE device), so hopefully that'll make porting CM to it less cumbersome.

Yes, of course!! my bad. Its why I have the little thing at the end that says (thanks to "all" involved in the development so far) not trying to take credit from anyone!!
Yes, I definitely appreciate the more stock google look and feel of the A9 but its no substitute for a pure GPE or CM ROM!
