A9 owners speak up!! This is for all A9 owners and would be A9 owners who would love to see development of AOSP and CM based ROMS. GPE port from the M8 and any other ROMS. As well custom Kernels like ElementalX. Thanks to @jcase we have S-off, modified boot image for disabling forced encryption and allowing root and @Chainfire we have SuperSu and @Captain_Throwback and @Dees_Troy we have TWRP. A million thanks to all involved in the development so far. I would just love to get a feel for how many users out there are waiting for and would help support the development of custom ROMS and kernels! Let the wishful thinking be heard :good:
Also love to hear from developers! Progress, status updates etc etc
UPDATE: First ROM is now here! Thanks to @Captain_Throwback Located here!!! http://forum.xda-developers.com/one...9-base-roms-recovery-flashable-t3282335/page4

It would be good to get some CM development up and running.
What's new in this 6.0.1 ? ??

Well, one thing I don't like is that it now requires your pattern or pin to unlock the device after a reboot where as before after a reboot it would unlock with the just the finger print reader It can now read the new 6.0.1 emoji-cons but still cant send them. They just don't show up in the keyboard. I want to pop my verizon SIM into it and see if anything changed there. Still testing otherwise. Haven't noticed that much else.

Soo, no changes on verizon.. Still shows LTE logo with no bars and LTE data works but to voice or text. With AT&T however, VoLTE seems to now be working on all calls, not just other users on AT&T on iPhone 6's and 6s's which is very exciting!! LTE works during all phone calls.. See screen shots.
What about a bounty for a custom rom ?
Why do you think we are here on XDA?!?! Of course we want custom Roms and Kernels!!!!

I thought I was the OP of the A9 TWRP thread, not @Dees_Troy?
(or course without him, we wouldn't have TWRP at all)
I'm surprised there aren't at least any stock rooted ROMs floating around the Development forum. I did post one earlier today in someone else's thread, but I'm not sure how much exposure that's going to get. As far as AOSP ROMs go, the good thing is that there is a bit less Sense on the A9 than on previous devices (more like a GPE device), so hopefully that'll make porting CM to it less cumbersome.

Yes, of course!! my bad. Its why I have the little thing at the end that says (thanks to "all" involved in the development so far) not trying to take credit from anyone!!
Yes, I definitely appreciate the more stock google look and feel of the A9 but its no substitute for a pure GPE or CM ROM!

hi
im kind of new to som of this, although i have knowledge about root and custom roms, ive come across something i've never considered before, namely kernel :/ as i understand that the right kernel can extend your battery life and such, i get raather curious about wich kernel i should use or if i actually would benefitt at all.
at the moment i have icecoldsandwich 2.0.0 custom rom installed with CM9 kernel (installed it 30 min ago so havent had time to check battery performance on this rom).
what should i do? would i benefitt from another kernel?
cheers, and thank all of you for engaging in this community ive learned alot from just reading
you can't change kernel on CM9 coz there's none compatible with that ROM apart the one shipped with it; that rom is in deep developement you have to wait a while if you want other compatible kernels.
cheers

Yep. All the ROMs have their preferred kernel anyway so you don't have much choice when it comes to kernels (at least not in the desire s section, not to say there's anything wrong with our kernels, Lowveld has done an amazing job with the kernels).
AOSP- Reaper kernel
Sense 3.5 - Endymion Kernel
Sense 3.0 - Hyperion Kernel
There are also two more kernels, Tiamat for AOSP and Unity v9 for sense. However, both these kernels are outdated now.
i see
well.... i have a reaaaaaal good feeling that there will be released a new version of the tiamat kernel veeeeeery soon :>

I wouldn't do it from a developer unless they gave you permission. But if it were from HTC I'd do it! I think a screenshot would suffice. Going to about phone can show you the kernel version.

MIUI is one of the most popular ROMs ever built for android and you can read about it here --> http://en.miui.com/a-39.html
8/25/12: {UPDATE}
I am currently working on porting MIUI over to the SGS3, I am working with another developer right now and we are making A LOT of progress on the port. Currently there is no ETA for a release but hopefully we will be done soon. Anyways, we are still looking for testers so please post in the thread or send me a PM if you are interested in testing the ROM.

Hello Everyone,
I am a big fan of MIUI and I was just reading that they recently released a JellyBean version of MIUI (here). I thought this would be great for our phone and now that our bootloader is pretty much unlocked I don't think it would be too hard to port this over. I was wondering if any of our great developers could look into this.
I am happy to use my phone as a testing device if anyone starts working on this.

You are welcome to start a port yourself check out miui.us or the cooking forums here on xda for instructions on how to start porting roms.
Otherwise, I would say that beans is the most likely to do this. He had a very nice MIUI port for the DX (I know because I tried it!)
Yes, I am looking into porting this rom over to the SGS3, I have been reading up on some guides for porting MIUI and I would love to read one about building roms for the SGS3 in specific. A couple years back I got into building roms for the DROID ERIS but I haven't done a lot of work with them since. I really have just been doing a lot of theming.
Either way, I will get started on a port and please point me to any useful information if you know of any!
Thanks,
Ljbaumer

I just made an alpha 0.0.1 build of miui for the SGS3 (VZW), I am pretty sure it is loaded with bugs and may not even boot but there is a tiny bit of progress being made.
I am thinking that the main problem will be the updater-script. Please PM me if you can help with the updater-script or just know a lot about ROM building, AOKP (I am basing it off AOKP Milestone 6.1), MIUI, or you think you can help.
All I can say is good luck to you in your efforts. The last fully functioning MIUI ROM that I used was on the DInc. A few developers struggled very hard to get MIUI working on the HTC thunderbolt, and we never got a fully functioning ROM. They could never seem to get MMS to work properly. It seems that as our devices have become more and more sophisticated, it is harder and harder to get MIUI to fly. I hope earnestly that you can be successful on this. It is the smoothest, most user friendly, easy on the eye, ROM out there with themes galore. I can't wait!
New Build! Alpha 0.1.0! Testers Needed!
Currently uploading a new build...
Just an FYI, created another build that has a much better chance of booting than the previous one. I am looking for some testers, please contact me if you are available to test some builds for me.
Quick warning: there is a very good chance that the ROM will not boot correctly. In that case you may have a brick or you will have to restore your old ROM via recovery or just completely flash and re-root again via ODIN. I take absolutely no responsibility for what happens to your phone before or after you flash this ROM or anything else that I have made. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

4) Install ROM from SDCARD
5) Reboot and pray that it worked
6) Report Bugs back to me (almost 100% sure that there will be bugs)

No problem,
I realize I didn't really state what MIUI is in the OP. I will update it after this.
Anyways, MIUI is an extremely customized and smooth version of android that gives android a completely different look and feel. I really like it so I am working on porting it over to the SGS3. You can read all about MIUI and see some screenshots at their website right here: http://en.miui.com/
Or you can also do this: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=MIUI
MIUI is just like normal android, meaning you can use the play store and do all of the same things that you can do typically except you can also do tons of other cool extra stuff such as full theming support! Also the whole UI is re-done and it looks like a much improved version of HTC Sense mixed with TouchWiz (IMO).
Hopefully that helps a bit!
Thanks,
Ljbaumer

No. Do not flash ROMs from other carriers on your phone. It WILL result in a brick.

It actually wouldnt brick your device as the rom doesnt flash any radios. It might not boot, but it wouldnt brick it. The ATT version of the rom (which is based off the tmo leak) works unmodified (kernel and all) with the tmo version. I have a version in both the ATT and TMO forums and the rom is exactly the same except for the model number in the build.prop. However, I'm not sure it will work on the CDMA variant.

Like what graffixnyc said, the only differences are in the build.prop. Just add the CDMA specific values to the build.prop in BlackJelly (be sure to remove the GSM stuff). Also, take the apns-conf.xml from one of our ROMs like Synergy or CleanROM and replace the one in BlackJelly. That should get you booting.

I'd say just stay away from the ROMs in the i9300 forums. But even those wouldn't give you a hard brick. I know...I've purposely tried to do it by installing Omega and Foxhound.

Even so I'd be really careful saying that. Someone may read that and think it's fine to flash stuff from other threads while in fact it is really dangerous. The OP only has a few posts so this may apply to him too (no offense, there are some people who read on here all the time and just don't bother with an account until they need to, I'm just sayin)
Hey guys,
I just ported over the BlackJelly ROM the OP requested and will be posting it here for people to use. Since I am pretty much caught up in other projects, both IRL and on XDA (AOSP), this ROM won't be receiving much support as I'd like to give it so I welcome anyone to take the port and make it better. And please, no smartass comments like this:

HOWEVER, if you do want me to support it fully by abandoning other XDA projects and provide updates on the original developer's behalf, let me know. Of course, I will only provide full support if graffixnyc is okay with me doing it.
The build WILL most likely have bugs, some major, some minor, but that is for everyone to fix. I think this will be a good learning tool as well. Oh and if you already weren't aware, you can use kernels from the other carriers. AFAIK, the kernels are common among all carriers (not including the international kernels) so flash away!
Before we get to the download link, MAJOR props and thanks to graffixnyc for BlackJelly ROM. It's great!

I imagine you changed the update-script in it then. The partition difference would brick you for sure. I didn't change them. I may have been lucky or something, but I kept the ROM as is and installed it and didn't end up with a hard brick. Regardless, moral of the story is to stay away from i9300 ROMs unless someone makes a successful port.

Have fun, guys!
derp
Let the bumping begin
Thanks team codefire you guys are awesome
@thecubed @autoprime
U guys ROCKED .... still debating between G3 or Note 4 for me.
Great news!!! Thank you!!
Thank you guys so much. Just Rooted and Bumped today. Waiting for something sick to flash. Thanks again! You guys are awesome.
Should I be able to take this ROM, from the Tmobile G3:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-lg-g3/orig-development/rom-cyanogenmod-11-0-t2876156
Sign it, then flash on my AT&T variant?
So now we can have ROM's bumped - are we limited to only D850 ROMs or is there some compatibility outside of that? I'm ready to load CM11 on my device at this point. I don't mind the LG skinning but just by disabling the installed AT&T apps and disabling other LG-esque apps you can free up a GIG of RAM. I'd love to see a slim ROM fly on this device.

I would think that you should always stick to ROMs intended for your device, including any indicated for all variants. ROMs for other models will likely have kernels that are not intended for the D850.
D850 specific ROMs will start popping up shortly.
Since I'm not a programmer I will agree with your assessment czucker. I realize that different devices / different kernels are out there. What I didn't know was wither or not there was specific bits that differentiate the T-Mobile builds from the AT&T ones. Meaning, would the only change necessary be the APN?
My advice, NEVER flash anything that isn't intended for the D850. If something happens people on here may not be able to save you. Personally it's not worth the risk. Just WAIT... Roms will be coming in.

Over at thr tmo forums they are saying it should work. Anyone else brave enough? Theres really no need for another person to compile if it can be a unified build.

I really wish we could get a developer to chime in on this "development thread" rather than just throwing speculation out in to thin air. Clearly some devs have managed to get roms going with a unified build on "same-hardware" devices. One example is the Galaxy S4.. every device was exactly the same apart from the cellular modem (which you don't flash anyway with the OS image). And, the recent MIUI v5 build for our G3.
I'm just trying to open this topic up for anyone adventerous enough because clearly it has worked on many other devices.. and will probably with ours as well.
After Bumping an image would we have to zip it?

Me either. There are carrier specific/TMO specific files, even though the hardware/TMO G3 will unlock and work on ATT. Patience is a good thing.
But heck, someone's always ginny pigging about, go ahead and let us know.

D855 ROMs will not work on D850. Some slight differences. Even with Bump!ed kernel. There is a D850 CM ROM now though
Save yourself the headache and take the advice that was already given, just use what is made for your device unless you want to waste more hours repairing what you broke.
Thanks for Bump! Who doubted you guys????

I thought Tmobile was a D851, not D855. Correct me if I'm wrong?
You really seem like you want to go for it ..... I honestly wouldn't and I have flashed a crap ton of stuff .. Hence my name .... Just stick with what's for your d850 .... But them again if your as stubborn as some other people go ahead and try it .. I will wish you all the luck and heck maybe it will work or maybe it will die by fire..... Who knows .... Good luck

CAUTION with 5.1.1 UpdateG925PVPU2B0F7I've been spending some time reading T-mobiles issues with the update. This isn't a super new conversation, but is probably new to many Sprint users. The update appears have rollback protection, which effects both kernel and bootloader from what they are saying... Which I find slightly confusing since I didn't think that their was a locked bootloader on the US versions (maybe someone can assist with that)
Figured we could start the conversation early for Custom Root/Recovery/etc. users, so that we may save some of us some trouble with Soft/Hard brinks in the next week or so.
This is the thread I've been looking at.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s6-edge/general/psa-odin-5-1-1-t3136151
EDIT:
NO, the bootloader is not locked with the 5.1.1 update.
Rather, "Factory Reset Protection" (an Android thing - not a Samsung thing!) is now an option, which allows you to lock the bootloader yourself, protecting your device from someone installing a custom recovery, wiping your device and making it their own. It makes the device somewhat less valuable, and therefore (supposedly) less likely to be stolen.
The 5.1.1 upgrade looks to be a "permanent" upgrade, meaning we're not able to revert back to 5.0.2 kernels and recoveries.
So, I would suggest to sit tight with your current set up. In order to customize our devices we will need to wait for:
A) Root for 5.1.1
-Root has been achived: http://forum.xda-developers.com/spr...elopment/5-1-1-stock-of7-kernel-root-t3153396
B) Samsung to post the source code for the new kernel.
C) Custom Recovery
-Recovery has been achived:
Once we have the above, we can get back to modding our devices.
If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.
Interesting article, I remember several other older Samsung devices where you could not downgrade bootloaders and modems. IE Galaxy S3, note 3, s5. But there was still root, Roms and the ability to flash kernels. Hopefully there's no need to go back anyway. The kernel thing is something new so I may hold off on upgrading. Thanks for the info

This is my first Samsung, so the whole root recovery process was almost too smooth since I've been on the HTC side for 5 years. Unlocking bootloaders, S-off and requesting tokens to push.. Ugh, as must as I likes HTC and Sense, that sucked.
I think I'm holding off as well, untill Sac23/ Ram9200 might have spare time to look over the update first and make sense of it all and could at least get it to where V.2 is right now. But it sounds like the Kernel could be our hold up, without Hybridmax's current support.

Yea but based off of my years of experience and having Samsung devices, I'm pretty sure that someone will find a way moving forward, but going back probably won't happen. I too had an HTC evo years back lol and I couldn't stand the root process. I feel your pain. But yea it may be wise just to wait for a while on the update

I've been keeping up with the thread. Looks like T-Mobile got it worked out and looks like it didn't affect the international variant. US cellular just got it. Let's see what happens with them

That makes sense. Thank you for the confirmation. 5.1.1 is only a stock update for the time being
