Nokia Eos - General Topics

Anyone anticipating this 41 megapixel monster with XX lossless zoom and all the best photo editing software on any platform. Running on an unquestionably smooth OS that emphasizes heavily on cameras I really can't see a flaw in this phenomenal device. It's definitely something worth watching. I've been drooling since the initial pics leaked.
Mmm, algorithms.

Yeah, I'm in on the same boat. Hoping for the Snapdragon 800 over a dual core version though.
I also like the idea of a possible LED light and Xenon flash to add more options in taking photos. Any chance for expandable storage?

Awesome phone! Reminds me of my old Nokia N82. Used it a long time and with its xenon flash the iphone users were often shocked by the good quality of low-light pics.
And this EOS sensor probably offers a very good high-iso performance.
Lets hope the phone will also handle those huge pictues/videos in a good way....

I was reading this article and i found out that now Nokia 909 would be the new name for the Nokia EOS, also known as the Nokia Lumia 1020. Isn't this amazing that how the 41MP Windows Phone device is not going to be one of the Lumia lineup?

[Q] Possible to run Windows phone 7.5 on Iphone 4

I think most of the people i know, love the iphone4 design, My qs is, could we keep the hardware and run windows phone7.5 on this device.
If it doesnt excist, what do we need to this, im really looking in to make windows phone7.5 for the iphone!
thx
It's not possible as of yet, who knows in the future
Honestly, your best bet would be to try and fit the guts of a Windows Phone into an iPhone (which will still have problems). The alternative is to rewrite the Windows Phone OS to work with iPhone hardware (which is a ridiculous task). Either way, I don't see this happening.
There are more handsets with Windows Phone on them than there are iPhone models, and there are more being made regularly. Just pick a phone that already exists or wait till something new comes out that you like.
Not sure if it is possible, but I think it would be hilarious. You probably wouldn't make any friends amongst the hardcore apple users.
There are a couple nokia windows phone's that have nice cameras and screens. There is a nokia phone coming out with a 41mp camera. The Lumia 900 is also nice.

41mp, why would someone need that on a phone.. lol
Ya it does sound like a lot. Engadget has a hands on with the phone. It sounds very interesting for photography. The only way you could actually replace cameras with a phone is if you were willing to have a lens that really sticks out of the back of the phone which I am sure most people wouldn't like. I guess that's obvious though.
yeah, but I guarantee the cmos sensor isn't 41mp, probably 10 at best, so the rest of the camera doesn't matter. As for op, simple solution... sell ur iPhone and get a windowz phone. Ur phone has GREAT resale value
U have to go to jail for that.
Becoz win7.5 is not open source.

Hmm, that's the one with awesome sauce on it. When you get a chance to use it, post a review !
no comment. =|
Whats the point of this topic..is it telling us that Nokia came out with a camera instead of a phone..or the opposite?
I mean seriously!! Okay, i agree that this device has a 41mp camera..but what for?? Its already left behind man..nokia should just learn to accept that. lol
I used to be a loyal nokia user..but it kinda sucks when they just abandoned Symbian just like that instead of developing it further...and joined with windows and linux to compete with android and apple..how low can they go?? hahaha...
And it is not real 41 megapixeplsssssss camera.
Of course, packing a larger sensor with more than three times the number of pixels doesn't translate into better photos: smaller pixels collect less light, which worsens image quality. The thing is, Nokia doesn't really want you to use the full resolution of its sensor. Not for giant photos, anyway.
Instead, the 808 defaults to a 5-megapixel resolution. Through a process called pixel oversampling (though some might call it pixel binning), Nokia combines seven pixels into one superpixel. Doing that helps eliminate image noise in low-light conditions and, according to Nokia, makes noise virtually nonexistent when shooting in good lighting. So while the 808 can be set to take 38- or 34-megapixel images depending on the aspect ratio used--4:3 or 16:9, respectively--it's not why Nokia used such a high-resolution sensor.

You've misunderstood the information. Check http://www.nokia.com/global/products/pureview/ to see how but basically the only digital manipulation is actually in converting the 41 mp data down to the default 5 mp image. This is what is being referred to in the bit you quote, it is referring to how the high res data from the sensor is reduced in order to take lower res photographs.
Having seen the full res pictures it takes I can assure you the camera is definitely awesome and blows away a lot of proper dslr's.
It does actually have a 41 megapixel sensor, as you can read in nokias explanatory pdf availabe from their website.
It uses a 41 mp sensor but defaults to 5 mp pictures due to image size.
You say it is a digitally generated image, all non film camera images are, however in this case the image is not as may be implied generated via extrapolation of a lower res ccd but actually is down sampled from a very high res one.
This is also why the digital zoom is limited to just 2x because its unzoomed image is already so high it can use digital editing to crop the full image to produce a zoom which is still super high resolution.

[Q] New phone

Hey there!
I've been thinking about getting a new phone during my time at telemarketing (can get them with a decent deal), but can't really decide which one should I choose. At the moment I have HTC Desire HD and I've had it for little over a year now.
I'm down to 3 different phones: Samsung Galaxy S3, HTC One X or Nokia Lumia 900. I can get GS3 and Lumia through the telemarketing, but for One X I would have to get it from somewhere else.
GS3 and One X would be awesome choices as they are pretty new models in the market (although, Lumia 900 isn't that old either) and I'm already familiar with the Android OS. I also like that they have a Quad-core processors and the screens are amazing too. But Lumia would be an interesting choice too as I like how fluid the whole OS works. It also has couple other standard features I really like, such as the Nokia Radio-mix or whatever it is called. The build of Lumia feels really sturdy, too.
And what I look from a phone is pretty much that it would look nice, work smoothly and could be customized to at least some extent, even the small customization of Lumia with the 7.8 update is enough for me. Oh and, music is one of the more important factors for me too (GS3 still being the best choice for this with the FLAC support).
So, if you have any suggestions, please tell me! But I must say that I have time until Saturday 30th 15:59CET, because that's my last day in the job.
And please share your own experiences and thoughts of the phones too!
Whatever you do DO NOT get the Lumia 900, they will fall in value very soon as it will not get Windows 8 making them redundant with 7.8. Get it if you plan to stick with the Version 7 of windows OS but future wise it'll be a dead beat.
I've had both the HOX and SGS3 and both are fantastic phones.
If you need expandable storage and a removable battery then get the SGS3 if you don't the HOX is a great alternative. It's screen is lovely, camera is better in my eyes, it looks better, and HTC is good with software updates.
The SGS3 has the better audio via headphones if that is of any significance, records better videos but sound not all that, the screen displays deeper blacks compared to the HOX and better contrasts but images appear over saturated compared to the more natural looking images on the SLCD2 on the HOX.
You'll be happy with either.

Nokia 808 PureView Vs Galaxy S4 Vs Galaxy S3

hi friends. the topic says it all. but here is the catch.
i have to go on a trip. its my first time ever out of the country so i really need a great CAMERA PHONE.
i know 808 sweeps floor with Both S4 and S3 for its camera performance but i still need an idea from u guys, cause u guys are the best
i have owned S3 and its camera is great. but not a good low light performer. its THE GREATEST PHONE for sure. and S4 will not be available till end of this month.i really need to decide within like 2 days to go for any set.
are there any friends here who owned 808 and S3 together? cause i have never used 808 but every read only good about its camera.
pls suggest me. i will not go for 920 cause windows phone sucks! well, Symbian sucks ever worse but its camera is comparable to DSLRs so im asking just to confirm from u guys.
i expect good and sincere help cause i love xda
*EDIT* and one more question what can be the price of used 808 as i have no idea at all about its resale
thanks in advance for ur time and help

Haven't you answered your own question???
Questions should go to the proper forum section, but we have camera discussions here too.
With that said, not to leave you without an answer, the PureView 808 is obviously the best camera phone on the market. The good news about the GS4 is however that it does awesome good light photos which at 13MPs are good for digital zooming or later cutting which is usually a problem with phones (no optical zoom). The bad news is that, despite improving tremendously, absolute dark shots are still problematic, and if half your shots are taken during nights or very limited lights, the Lumia 920 is the one to choose. If 80% of your shots are taken in low but not dark conditions, average lights and ideal scenery, the GS4 is an excellent all-around performer for a phone.
But you can judge the quality for yourself over this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2213853
price of a used around 320-350$ for now

No, its not comparable to a DSLR, but its much better then the S3/S4 and all the other phones. If you want a good low light phone, go for the 808/920 or htc one.
But if you want to shoot REALLY NICE pictures, you should get a dslr.
For example the Sony Alpha 57: currently avaible for 440€ in Germany. The supplied objective is ok but you can improve the quality with an alternative one.
All the phones avaible ARE NOT WORTH COMPARING WITH A GOOD DSLR!
None. If you are going on a trip, you should get a DSLR.

Technically, Olympus E-PL2 is not a DSLR. It's a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera.
And "Micro Four Thirds" should have told you the size of the sensor. Compare this to a size of a typical APS-C sensor.
If I am looking to take photos, I would rather get a typical DSLR.
Matching 5D Mark III in photography? I would better ask the editor to get his eyes checked. 808 is neither good phone, not a good camera. It's much better than typical mobile camera, but can't be compared to a good DSLR. It even worse than a point n shoot like RX100.
I don't need photography lessons from blind test in GSMArena.
808 is comparable to my 5D mark III? Please. I'll advise you to stick with your current phone and get something like Canon 650D or 60D.

If 2 micron is ultrapilxel, what do you call a 5 micron? Elephant-pixel or dragon-pixel?
I wonder if you know that even a 6 year old phone like Nokia N95 had a bigger sensor and bigger pixel-size. In 2007 they had a phone with 1/2.5 inch sensor and 2.2 micron pixel pitch.
Don't remember anyone calling it ultrapixel!

ultrapixel is just a marketing term aka a name. is it so hard to understand that? HTC figured that it would be rather embarrasing to sell a flagship with only 4MP on board so they coined this term.
Its like apple coined the retina display term. theres nothing to do with retina there. its just a name.
And how big fat and heavy was that n95? 808 is best cameraphone out there but nokia coundnt sell it. people dont want fat phones anymore. not most people.
Seems like you don't want a dslr. If you want REALLY GOOD picture quality and that's all you care about you could still get a decent digital non-dlsr camera which is much smaller than a dslr. I mean you already got a decent phone anyways so why throw so much money on 808 that's got nothing but a camera? Better spend something like $350 on a decent camera with superb quality. That price range can already get you something much better than any smartphone camera's

Captain Obvious strikes back with vengeance.
i know it very clear 808 just cant compete with DSLRs but u should give the credit where it is due. 808 does compete with some of the low end DSLRs and i said LOW END!!
and 920 is only better than 808 in terms of steady videos cause of its OIS and thats it!
808 captures true colors and u can get the punchier colors while chossing vivid mode or increasing the contrast
i just wish, GOD just WWWIIIISSSSHHH that HTC had used some high quality and higher pixel count sensor in ONE! that would have been awesome!
ultra pixel of HTC ONE is like the 12MP sensor of N8 when it was introduced years ago! and then Nokia perfected that with 808. i was literally hoping a great phone from HTC this year at least, but alas... Ultrapixel should be evolved and it definitely would be, into something comparable to what Nokia did with 808!
now my current wish is Nokia choses to go Android and introduce Pureview Phase 3 phone with FHD screen and camera with double the performance of 808... (just a wish )

I'm not much of a photographer myself, but, bizarrely, the camera spec of a phone is an important factor.
Throughout my years of buying phones, I have seen that Sony has proved themselves, in my eyes, as the best manufacturer of smartphone cameras.
Why?
My first REAL camera phone was the SE K800i, for the time, it was fantastic. I didn't find a phone with a better camera for a while after that.
Then I bought the SE Satio, 12MP at a time when most phones seemed to have 5MP or lower, its flash was incredible and its night pictures were incredible, it even produced better images than my dad's Nokia N8, another 12MP phone released at a later date.
The Xperia arc S was a downgrade in MP to the Satio, but its images were of similar quality.
I then got the Xperia T, which had an awesome 13MP camera.
My Xperia Z has a great camera, but it has one fault; Sony's camera software compresses the image too much.
Overall, I'd say that, at the moment, the Xperia Z/Galaxy S4 have the best cameras (They both use the same sensor).
Probably followed by the HTC One, which can sometimes have worse pictures in light conditions (Though generally better in dark conditions).
For those interested in camera-phones, I'd suggest looking into the yet to be announced Xperia i1, which has a 20.7MP sensor, and an ISO much, much, much, higher than that of the HTC One, theoretically meaning better pictures in low-light conditions.

Hey guys,

I have never personally tried a Nokia phone but wondered how the Lumia with it's 42 mp camera stacked up against other phones. Don't know if that really makes a difference or not but would be really interested to find out. Hey bldy, yeah I think with all the extra options we get to tweak in the software has made a pretty big difference. I find that I can control a lot more of the variables when it comes to taking pictures. I still do have a standalone Sony cybershot for taking pictures if I know I'm going to be taking a lot of photos, but Ithink our cameras produce pictures about on par with that.

My dad has had a few Nokia phones, his N8, for example had an 12MP camera which wasn't as good as my Satio (worse pictures in dark light, slight yellow tint in pictures), but compared to other phones, it was still great.
He now has a Nokia Lumia 820 and he hates it. It has an 8MP camera, dual LED flash, but it is simply horrid. Photos are too dark and saturated, and photos with a backlight are terrible. It is one of the worst camera phones I've used.
Nokia only seems to put great cameras onto it's flagship, because from what I have heard, the 920 has a great camera.
An annoying thing with Windows phones is the lack of options for the picture. You can't tweak individual settings for your pictures.

Bravia Engine can only function on devices with a locked bootloader, if you have an unlocked bootloader, the BE isn't working, and won't for anyone. Ever.
If you have a locked bootloader the BE will be the same on every ROM (Unless somebody ports a newer version).
