[Q] SD card not mounting, "blank or unsupported file system". - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

When I putt he SD into my phone (currently running Paranoid KANG droid 2.32) I actually get nothing more than an occasional "SD has been removed" message. However, when I put the card into my old OG droid (running Cyanogenmod 7) i get the "unsupported file system" error. This has happened before, and I just had to wait it out before the SD recovered on its own. It is not doing this now. (yes I am an idiot for still using it despite my 32 gigs of internal storage). I have a feeling it is formatted as RAW due to a formatting issue, but I can't get anything else (pc or other devices) to recognize the card, other than my OG droid. So what I want to know, is if there is a way to force mount the card, or give a PC control over the sdcard path and force mount it some way through the PC (effectively turning my phone into an external card reader, because traditional methods don't work). I need a workaround for this, because there are dozens of pictures of my family, puppies, and friends on it that I don't want to lose.

Back up the card of you can, it sounds like it's dying on you. This phone really s3ms to kill cards, I've already gone through 2 32gig cards.

I had a 32GB Sandisk Ultra MicroSD card, and by chatting with Sandisk support, I am going to exchange my dead card for a working card. BTW, while you can, salvage the data you can, because it starts out like that, before becoming completely unusable.

I've went through two SanDisk. They are easy to work with, just get the ball rolling on the replacement.
Like the others said, get your data backed up as soon as you can.

wow. so now not only am I not able to use my phone on tmobile's 4g, I also cannot have external storage because the phone destroys it? what a tremendously idiotic piece of crap.
does anyone know about any apps or pc software that would help me get my data back? I have the card reader but the pc wants to format the card and so does the phone. I need, like, mad rescue gear.
thanks!

Wow... You can't use it on someone else's 4g because it was designed for a different network.
Also I've not had any problems whatsoever with my external.

Had 4 of these cards for a year now and not one hiccup. I'd say whatever is happening to them, its something you are doing to crap them, not the vendors. ALways backup your critical data, but if you treat these cards properly they will work and last as well as any.

No, you CAN use it on someone elses network, just not T-mobile as it doesn't do hdspa+ 1700, 1900... There's even a bounty out for that elsewhere on xda, to enable these bands, I believe it's currently at over $200.
And no, I'm not doing crap to the SD card. I've had it for over two years, used it on a different phone before that, never did anything different and it just died out of the blue. I'm not a noob, I would know if I had done something to it.
You would be pretty pissed off too if all your data was deleted, the phone you spent many many hours working to pay for did not work and when you ask for help someone blames you instead of helping. But I guess it's easier to blame than to help out right?

I get that part. However, don't get mad that it doesn't work fully for the network is wasn't designed for. That was my biggest part. I know there's a bounty. However, its been up for forever and nothing has come of it. I can't stand seeing people gripe about this phone because its not literally magic. Verizon's stuff is locked down, always has been, probably always will. Its a different radio/modem/antenna set than the tmo and at&t versions. It was meant to run on Verizon's network. Period.

SD Card Damaged - Repeated...every day

I've reviewed the threads (many very old) on here and none seem to really address my concern, so here goes...
I have a 32GB Patriot Class 10 card for my Inspire 4G smartphone. I'm running Revolution HD rom and the rom's rock solid...great performance, battery life, etc.
For some damn reason, I cannot figure out why I'm getting errors from Android (Froyo) telling me that the SD card is damaged. It will prompt me to format and start over, each time basically causing me to reinstall apps and I'll lose pictures and video in the process each time this happens.
When it happens:
Windows 7 will not allow access to the card (only option is format) and Android device cannot (or will not) mount the card. Unless I format that is.
I've tried formatting via Windows as well as via Android but this seems to happen to me every 1-2 days now. It's getting really old and I'm about fed up with it.
I don't know if it's something to do with the rom I'm using, or if it's the micro SD card itself...or if it's (uh oh) the card reader port built into the Inspire 4G. Who knows. Maybe it's how class 10 works for all I know. It's really lame.
It might even somehow be the fact that I was running apps from the SD card. I don't know if this relates, but I've forced non-movable apps to the SD card sometimes via Titanium Backup as well. Maybe that plays a role in this.
I'm at my wit's end and don't know what else to do. Appreciate any feedback!
Did you get this card from eBay?
After you put the card in your Windows machine, when you are done, do you right click on the drive and hit "eject" or do you just pull it out?
Try the stock 8gb card for a day and see if you get any errors. I'm betting your 32gb card has the issue.
Sent from my HTC Inspire 4G using XDA App.
Hey fellas.
Just realized that I wasn't necessarily using the most current version of Revolution rom. I had beta 2 HD, which may have been some time ago. I re-flashed with the one released yesterday (v3.2) and re-formatted the card as well.
So far so good, so we'll see how it goes on my 32GB Patriot Class 10. Card was purchased at Fry's Electronics in Wilsonville, OR.
Also, I always "eject" the card from Windows and also "unmount" in Android before removing the card. Always!~

Reformatting the SD card

Ok, so i did search before i posted this and i even looked through all 5 of the similar threads that popped up when i wrote the title for this one but none of them answers my question so i'm posting...
Background:
I'm pretty new to Android, got a Dell Streak back in Oct '10, and loved it. Rooted, put DJ_Steve's StreakDroid on yada yada... Broke my streaks screen and got an Inspire from my Best Buy warranty.
Now, to root this Inspire it seems its a LOT more involved... Making a gold card etc.
My question:
When you reformat the SD card, what happens to all the folders that are on it? Do they get recreated or are they gone for good? Are they even that important? I noticed some Adobe, Yahoo folders, which i assume can be re-created easily once the apps are reinstalled/opened back up but others on there like dcim, Android, Data, etc etc that look to be more important. Do i need to do anything special or just hit reformat? I'm looking at making my included SD card the gold card and taking my Streaks old 16GB card and using it for day-to-day use. So i guess i'm just looking for any "gotchas".
Thanks in advance to anyone who offers their help.

If any important data is in those folders, you should save them on your computer. For example, pictures in DCIM folder, music, videos.... or documents that you created..
While creating the gold card, the sd card will be formatted and you will lose all data.
After the phone is rooted, you can then format the card using the phone's "Format SD card" tool, and then use the card as normal.
All those folders will be recreated once those apps are installed.
Edit: Also, if you look in the Dev's section, there are tools that will help you with the whole process of rooting your phone.
Thanks Kirk! Yeah i've been reading up on the SuperOne Click and the Hacker Kit. Just trying to read and reread the stuff so i know what to expect. I'd like to watch the tutorial video for Super One Click but i'm at work and Youtube is blocked so i'll watch it at home tonight.
Just looking to see what one is easier and would give me the best chance of not royally screwing up my phone. I kinda get the gold card thing and what it does but seems so silly at the same time that i have to use an SD card and then put it away to use it for later if i decide i wanna go back to stock...
I guess the ease of hacking the Streak kinda spoiled me. Especially for my first Android phone

The inspire is my second android phone. I had the captivate and it was very easy to root. Prior to the captivate, I had the eyephone. So glad I went with an android phone. Sick and tired of the same UI with iphones.
Although the entire rooting process for the inspire seems overwhelming, it's actually pretty straight forward when you follow the instructions.
I haven't heard anyone "bricking" their inspire yet and if you get stuck in the rooting process, search the forums and you will most likely find your solution.
What route did you decide to use? The Hacker Kit or SuperOneClick?
Yeah i had a Captivate for about a month, it was just a loaner from AT&T until the Streak Come out. Previous to that i had the iPhone 3g as well. Hated playing in Steve's sandbox... and i abhor iTunes. I can't think of a bigger POS software.
I guess the Streak had its moments trying to root. I used the QDL tool which needed to be run through Fastboot with a couple commands. It was getting the damn Dell ABD driver running correctly on the PC which took the longest time.
Anyway, thanks for the info Kirk. I'll see if i can't get this thing cooked up tonight. I really wanna try CoreDroid, and get the battery life on this phone to a respectable level. If its just sitting in standby its ok, but as soon as you use it the percentages just tick away quite quickly.

I used the hack kit. Went ok. Had some slight issue when i tried to use a 1GB SD card that apparently is too small for a gold card. So, then I decided to just use the SD card that came with the phone and all went well!
I also have to agree with hating itunes... They keep cramming useless features and just makes the whole user experience a little less interesting.
Im glad that with android devices, you don't need any specific program to sync your stuff to the phone... Just plug in and done!

[Q] happened to me too - microSD corruption

Do you have a recommendation for a FREE way to recover a microSD card ?
I always read about it happening to others,
this time it's my turn - my new 32GB microSD shows up as corrupted on my new skyrocket
It happened when I changed battery (reboot)
Tried my windows PC - could not recover or read the microSD filesystem
I saw lots of paid software out there that offer recovery. Isn't there a free utility you know ?
Thanks

Though the one time I had a corrupt card it could not read it either

Make sure your card isn't counterfeit. I had a Kingston card that I bought off Craigslist that kept getting corrupted and turns out it was fake. I bought a real one off Amazon that works perfectly.
It really depends on the corruption. I've had a situation where something similar happened to a card in my digital camera. The corruption there was unrecoverable.
You can try the Easus solution which should be able to recover any files that are still recoverable. Not all files that it lists are going to to work though.
Important note: Don't assume that anything is recoverable, and be thankful for whatever you get. I have more experience with data recovery than I like to admit. Sometimes you get it all, sometimes you get nothing. It all depends on the nature of the damage.
This happened to me also... I lost everything on my first SD card.

[Q] SD card just died

I've had a 32 gig micro SD in my phone for a while now. I recently took my Siii out of my pocket only to find that it says the SD is unmounted. Odd, but not unheard of in the world of custom roms (paranoidkangdroid 2.something, rather recent though, 4.2.2 JB) So i do the sensible thing: Run into the storage menu, and lo and behold, its not registering. I pop it out and in, not registering. I reboot, and the damn thing still isn't registering. Then I take an old 2 GB micro SD and try it. This one worked just fine. 32 gig however does not. I move to my PC. Pop it in a micro to regular SD adapter, and the computer doesn't mount it. It does mount every other microSD of mine though. So can anyone tell me what the hell happened, and how I can recover my stuff?
Actually you can't, your sd card is corrupted and it's known to happen with this device that's why I always keep a weekly backup on my computer with everything. Especially the ones ordered from amazon the high capacity ones as far as I've seen.

Try booting a linux live cd and see if you can save anything, thats how I recover deleted tomtom maps in the past.

Is the SD card damaged or can it just be reformatted with a card reader on a PC (fat I am assuming)?
I was about to start using an SD card to backup the internal storage. It doesn't sound like this is the best option and backing it to my PC would be better.
My set up to start was cleanrom 6.2 with envy kernel running fine for a week. I had my sd card disappear today twice. PNY class 10 32gb less than 2 weeks old from best buy. Popped it in my pc and it was recognized no problem. So I transferred my data, formatted in fat 32 popped it in phone, no problem. Transferred data back and was Ok for a few hours. Swapped my battery for a freshly charged one and upon boot, phone said the card was damaged, to reformat it. So, I pulled it out and popped it in my pc. Pc said card was damaged. I opened a command prompt and ran a chkdsk /f and it fixed an issue with the file system. I then proceeded to restore my cleanrom 6.2 backup. So far so good. I am thinking it had to do with an app, but I can't be sure. Upon googling this, it seems that some people have had an issue with external sd cards with this phone.

I'm not sure exactly what brand or model you have for your SD card or when you purchase it. However if its a SanDisk and it was purchased before December 2012 there's a chance that it was part of a bad batch. I had the exact same problem with mine I have a UHs 1 32 gig SanDisk. I read somewhere on the internet that there is a known problem with SD cards from that company built before December. When I spoke with SanDisk they confirm that and said the newer batches have been corrected. Long story short if you're using an ultra high speed or for that matter any card by SanDisk call up there customer service explain to them the problem and they will send you a brand new one. The entire process took about a week for me.

Did you try my suggestion? Ive recovered numerous files using a linux live cd and/or a mac. Try putting the card in a network printer or mem card reader if linux and mac os isnt possible. Ive recovered my files, including those from a 16gb micro sd card, using those methods in the past.
Okay, so it works
Alright alright, i didn't expect this to get many responses. Anyway, it now works. It appeared to be fried, my mac, PC, ubuntu machine, and OG droid wouldn't even recognize that a card was inserted. Nor would my GS3. My solution? after turning it on and off a few times, I just left the card in it and set it aside for an hour. Lo and behold, it now works. The SD now works. It was fried, and is now unfried. I don't know how, I just guess I am lucky. Or aliens. Either way, I am happy. Not gonna jeep anything more than music on it though... Ah well, thanks for the help XDA!
If I were you, I'd back up everything on that card to my pc, and exchange it if under warranty. If not, chuck it, and purchase another card.
Not worth taking the risk again.
Consider yourself lucky so far

So I have had my sd card corrupt a few times now, so far this has seemed to help me recover my data.
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download
The problem could be a sandisk SD card:
(Outside link) crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/samsung-galaxy-s3-fault-is-caused-by-sandisk-memory-cards-50010684/
I read about the SD problems after just getting the S3.. decided to get a different brand card from the store.

Transfer To SD From Device

My fiance had to get a warranty exchange on her Sony Xperia Purple. The phone they gave her was a Samsung On5. Get old phone had 16 gb and her On5 only has 8 gb. I was trying to transfer her apps to her ST card so it would give her some more space so she can download her apps she had on get old phone. She uses the phone a lot to write, look things up and so on. She has terminal breast cancer and is bed most of the time so that's pretty much all she has to do that's not watching tv. Anyways I fought with T-Mobile for a month asking why they wanted to give her a phone with less space and that's not of equal value and shape. They said it's because after the past few years the phone lost its value and the On5 is what is around the same price now since they don't make get phone anymore. I think it's crap because she should have at least had the same 16 gb. Anyways, she doesn't so now I'm trying to figure out why it won't let me transfer the app to the sd card. So when I go into the application its highlighted and I'm able to click transfer to SD card. When I hit transfer it goes to around 80-90% then says unable to to transfer because there's not enough space. Which I just put a 32 gb SD card in there and formatted the card. It doesn't have not thing on the card. I'm able to transfer pictures on the card and music just. But I went ahead and erased those so I could have enough space. The apps that are aloud to be transferred ate highlighted and give you the option. Three other apps that you can't transfer don't even have an option for you to move to SD card. Can some one please let me know what I need and can do so I can free some space up for her and she can enjoy the phone. I can't just let go buy a different phone. Even though I wish I could. Thank you so very much!! [emoji16] [emoji20]

Firstly, I'm sorry about your wife man.
Secondly, You should edit the post and remove your IMEI & Serial Number. Those aren't of any help and posting them here can be a huge security risk for you. Replace it instead with your android version and such.
And, thirdly.....you have T-Mobile's version of the On5, which means its running 6.0. Marshmallow has a feature called "adoptable storage" where you can basically "merge" your external SD card with the internal storage. If Samsung didnt move or mess with it, it should be somewhere in settings>storage. Try that out and let me know if it works.
Keep in mind that it'll format your SD card though. And it'll also become unusable outside your wife's device.

Thank you Freewander10 for your response. I believe I changed the the info on the original like you recommended. So I went into the settings them storage and it says internal storage 7.66 GB used of 8.00 GB. Then below that it says SD Card 128 KB used of 31.24 GB. I don't see anything that says adoptive storage. I am so sorry for the annoyance of all of this. I'm just trying to get it where she can free up some space. I am terrible at this lol. But I can learn. Anyways, I'm still trying to find somehow to do this. I was trying to post a video and a picture but it said both were too big. So I apologize about that. I just don't understand why it slows that its able to be transferred, I have the space but it still won't because not enough space. Lol please forgive my slowness. I really do appreciate your help. Thank you so much for your reply. This is the 4th time I have tried to reply lol. So it keeps getting shorter and shorter. I believe I took all the info off. Thank you for the heads up. It's still showing in your reply and I'm not sure how to change that. I went to settings then storage. There was no adoptive storage. I'm not sure what to do. Its so stressful. I really do appreciate your help. I hope I have not caused any frustration or even annoyance lol. I am really terrible at knowing the details about phones but I do learn. Thank you for your help again. If you think of anything please let me know. She has no space on the device but has a full empty but formatted SD card. I hope I have not made myself look too ignorant lol. Thank you so much!

Its no problem at all bro. I'm happy to help.
And thanks for pointing out your info was still in my response :silly:
I've made the necessary edits.
Now, I did a bit of googling and found out that Samsung deliberately disabled the adoptable storage feature on the On5. Why? I have no idea.
But all hope isn't lost. You can still enable it/something similar. But you'll have to get your hands a bit dirty.
Most threads/sites I've been to recommended an app called "root essentials".... And as the name suggests, it requires root. Seeing this is Samsung, I doubt any/most of the one click root apps will be of any use, but I found a thread for your wife's device that outlines another method to get root access. There's also information in there on how to enable adoptable storage (via root essentials). Check it out and let me know I you make any progress. And try not to blow up the device
