hey everyone, i recently got a new Patriot 16gb class 10 micro SD card, and its blazing fast, but i have problems with it, it works perfectly fine when i format it but once i start syncing my music to it, it causes my phone to freeze up and starts FC'ing all my programs, and when the screen turns off it doesnt turn back on and i have to reboot it. When i put in my old SD card it reads and functions perfectly.
what could be causing the problem? i have the exact same files in my new SD card as in my old one, so it couldnt be any of the files, can the D2G support class 10 SD cards? i tried SBF'ing and starting fresh but i still have the same problems, and formatting the drive and syncing the files again doesnt help. i even used h2testw to verify that the card isnt fake and it isnt.
You really need to stick to Kingston and SanDisk <= class 6

unfortunately, the droid series of phones dont support class 10 cards, it took me a very long time searching, but i found that out. either way, i traded my card for a class 6 card with my friend, so im fine, even though i downgraded, thanks.
I wouldn't be surprised if it could be patched at some point to support class 10.
But probably not on a locked Bootloader of the D2G
From what I read, its the hardware that doesn't support class 10 cards, from what I read only the desire HD class of phones and the atrix support class 10 cards

ok, what the hell is going on? i put in a 16gb class 6 card in my D2G and it acted up in the same way it did with the class 10 card, same thing with a class 4 card, what the hell is wrong? this is really pissing me off because ive wasted a lot of money on these sd cards, and none of them are working, my D2G only seems to like the standard 8gb that came with it.

Brand matters. Make sure it is either SanDisk or Kingston...

Its sandisk

Did you unmount and then remount the cards?
i tried everything at this point, if it doesnt freeze my phone it cant unmount, the few times i manage to unmount it and format it, i try to sinc my files back onto it and it starts freezing up again, im pretty sure at this point that its something wrong with my phone and not the sd cards, this has been happening with every 16gb sd card i can find
No offense, but are you sure it is indeed a SanDisk and not a Chinese cheap fake clone?
Yes it is indeed sandisk, I bought it off of newegg, not ebay where they sell the chinese clones, I ran h2testw to ensure it was up to spec and it is.

so no one knows whats wrong with it? im thinking i might have to rma my phone...
I'm having a similar issue with my D2G, and a 16GB Class-4 Lexar SD card. I used 'rsync' to copy all my data from my 8GB card to the 16GB, and it will boot up and work for a minute or so, then it either freezes up, or the screen turns off and I can't turn it back on again.
The only thing I have not tried is to use the phone to format the card. I almost want to say that when I first installed it, it seemed to work, but I didn't want to have to redo settings or re-download apps that are on the SD card. Maybe there's some data messing it up. I used 'rsync' so it should have gotten all the .hidden files, and respect any permissions, so I'm not sure what the deal is.
Maybe I just need to spend some time, and reload all my apps and redo my settings that might have been saved to the SD? Anyone else have this issue or something similar?
Regards,
Bruce
I just ordered a 16 gig class 10 and hope that it will work.... as it is a pain to return. Have heard that there is a great speed advantage to using the high speed card and sideloading most photo Apps to the card. Did u get the card to work in the end?

my class 4 16GB card worked, it was any card that was of a higher class that didnt work, to this day i still have my 16GB class 6 card that causes freeze ups and reboots on my phone no matter what i do, i have no idea what causes it to act that way, but im pretty sure that this phone has a class limit of 4
Hi,
Did you copy everything from your old card to the new one, or just start "fresh" with the new card?
Also, did you use the phone to format the new card, or just start using it out of the box?
Many thanks...

i pretty much tried everything, formatting it on my computer, formatting it on the phone, copying files over, starting from scratch and syncing my music, every time it would start out working fine, but once there were a few files on the sd card it would start freezing up, the thing works just fine on my friends inspire 4g, he had it before me and had all his music and files on it and it worked flawlessly, i dont see why it doesnt work on the d2g.
I'm unable to get my class-4 16GB card to work with my D2G, so I'm going to exchange it for a class-2. The phone is supposed to be able to take up to 32GB, correct? I'm starting to think it's an issue with anything > class-2 speed.
the sd card that the phone comes with is a class 4, and my class 4 16gb card worked, it might be your sd card as someone said earlier
I'm starting to get really annoyed with either this phone/android or cm7. My SD card apparently has been "damaged" yet again for the 2nd time in 2 days while the phone sat at idle. I have a backup of all the important items but this is beyond annoying to keep reformatting sd cards. Any ideas as to what might be destroying my sd card?
What's the default capacity of the card? If it's 8GB, is it the card that came with the phone? If it's not that card, did you buy the card from a reputable vendor? There are entirely too many counterfeit cards floating about these days.
It's a 16GB Class 6 card I bought on Amazon. Forgot the brand and it's not even listed on the card itself. I think it was Komputerbay. That's probably my issue.
Hmm.. Was the card sold directly by Amazon, or was it a 3rd party just selling "new/used" stuff via Amazon?
Nah it was from a 3rd party. I was being cheap and found a 16GB Class 6 card at a good price so I figured who cares what brand it is and I guess 4 months later is when I'm paying for that.
Something to try, rather than reformatting every time, is to mount the card on your computer and run fdisk. Try this link for more info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4112485&postcount=9
I realize he is talking about a Windows Mobile phone, but this has worked for me.

I'll give that a shot when I get home and more than likely I'll be smashing this card and using the stock 8GB card till I can get a real good card.

Yeah I'm betting it's a cheap p.o.s. card. Good thing I got my invite to Music Beta today! I'll upload my music there and be fine with the stock 8GB card.
Another thing that seems to work for me when I get "Damaged SD Card" or "SD Card Unexpectedly Removed" is boot into Recovery, go to Mounts and Storage, and make sure all four partitions are unmounted. I don't know why they are mounted on boot, but it seems like when I get an SD issue, I go into Mounts and Storage and one of them has to be unmounted.
This usually happens when I have recently mounted USB storage to transfer files to/from my computer. If anybody has some insight into this, please speak up! Thanks.
Hey dear XDA peeps!
Ive got a couple of questions about microsd here
Ive got one 8GB Transcend card which I bought in the beginning and it seems to be working good. I then bought another 32GB Kingston card. It has worked pretty good but now it seems it is kinda fubared.. Ive unmounted it from the phone and connected it straight to the computer and Im having some problems copying stuff from the card. Which it was from the phone too..
How do I check the sd card for errors and fixes them? I dont have to keep the data on it.
What makes the sd card break? I understand how regular old harddisks die but what about sd cards? =)
And what brand for SD card shall I buy for the phone that have the best reliability?
Im trying to format the sd card but it just hangs and refuses to format it so I guess the card really is fubared :/
So what card brand do you recommend for best quality?
I've tried them all. SanDisk has the best microSD cards for the money. They are also faster than spec'ed. If you can't get SanDisk, get Kingston.
Transcend is the slower than SanDisk or Kingston. I've heard good things about Patriot but never tried them. Stay away from off-brands or you risk serous problems.
For any mobile phone get a Class 4 SanDisk. Format it using SDFormatter.

Right click the SD in windows explorer, hit properties, tools, check disk. what makes SD card go out is every flash storage has a set amount of writes, after those they start to go out. Whatever you do though, do NOT defrag a flash based storage, you'll kill it. I use a Kingston 4GB in mine and I've had my SD for years (before this phone it was used to boot operating system installs on my laptop and used for my DS flashcart

Bears repeating...
Do NOT defrag Flash-based storage, you will kill it. Flash memory doesn't need defragging because it does not have mechanical heads like a magnetic hard drive.
So I recently ordered a Sandisk Class 4 16 gb sd card for my Atrix 2. I wanted to be able to keep a backup of a ROM at all times while having 500 songs on my phone..but 2 gb just didnt cut it.
So i tried to connect the card with my phones USB cable while having it in the device, but it just wasnt showing up on the computer. I had to end up using a card reader.
It still works...just something to keep in mind while buying SD cards.

thats probably it. I had this happen off and on until I let android format it. my recomendation would be to put it in your computer and format it as fat32 then put it in the phone and have it format it
Thanks a lot ill try that
Although problems do not seem to be prevalent with the slower class cards, it might be a good idea to follow Patriot's advice regarding formatting. The suggestion was posted by Patriot in response to a review of a 32GB class 10 microSDHC.
Patriot acknowledged a problem with hemorrhoid OS and 32GB class 10 cards and suggested a temporary fix of performing a full format on a Windows PC with a 32kb allocation size, obviously FAT32 since stock hemorrhoid does not recognize NFTS.
The reply can be found in this review although the specific page will change if more reviews are added.

Be patient... they'll likely come sooner or later.
I got a 16gb class 4 sandisk and I am formatting it in my computer using following method:
I inserted the memory card in my E71 and connected it to my computer in mass storage mode. Then I started formatting using fat32, 32kb through my computer. But it is taking ages. Since last 2 hours, only 35% is completed. My questions:
1) Can i stop the format in between ? Or will it lead to certain faults?
2) Is the format this slow? Or should I try formatting it by putting it in adaptor and putting the adaptor in laptop slot and then format?

I'm using a Kingston 32GB Class 4 card, which is actually in my SGS3 now from my A2, and I have never seen anything to complain about with it. I still hit high benchmark scores as noted with my A2 as well as my SGS3, thinking though that I may try a higher rated class sdcard for the SGS3, since it doesn't seem to have the issues that the A2 has seen. But, a little more digging around has to be done before I make that kind of jump! (Better safe than sorry!) But, yes, the Class 10 cards will -eventually- give you grief if you try to use one with the A2. Not sure the 'scientifically-proven' answer to give here, just know that from everything I have seen, which has been substantial enough for me to believe that...

You should try a re-formatting of the sdcard, as you likely have some corrupted app data/other data that is causing the rebooting. A Class 4 card should give you no problems like this, unless you have some issues like I just mentioned.
And if you're trying to restore app data from, say, Titamium Backup, I recommend you do not do this. Just try a fresh format of the card, and do not restore data to it. Run your phone afterward for a good while to test. If your phone continues to reboot after you have tried this, changes are that you can rule out the possibility of the cause being due to the sdcard, and we can explore other possible known culprits...

And Doggcatcher has the majority of my podcast downloads failing. This has persisted after a couple reformats. Thoughts?

I've had a 32 gig micro SD in my phone for a while now. I recently took my Siii out of my pocket only to find that it says the SD is unmounted. Odd, but not unheard of in the world of custom roms (paranoidkangdroid 2.something, rather recent though, 4.2.2 JB) So i do the sensible thing: Run into the storage menu, and lo and behold, its not registering. I pop it out and in, not registering. I reboot, and the damn thing still isn't registering. Then I take an old 2 GB micro SD and try it. This one worked just fine. 32 gig however does not. I move to my PC. Pop it in a micro to regular SD adapter, and the computer doesn't mount it. It does mount every other microSD of mine though. So can anyone tell me what the hell happened, and how I can recover my stuff?
Actually you can't, your sd card is corrupted and it's known to happen with this device that's why I always keep a weekly backup on my computer with everything. Especially the ones ordered from amazon the high capacity ones as far as I've seen.

Is the SD card damaged or can it just be reformatted with a card reader on a PC (fat I am assuming)?
I was about to start using an SD card to backup the internal storage. It doesn't sound like this is the best option and backing it to my PC would be better.
My set up to start was cleanrom 6.2 with envy kernel running fine for a week. I had my sd card disappear today twice. PNY class 10 32gb less than 2 weeks old from best buy. Popped it in my pc and it was recognized no problem. So I transferred my data, formatted in fat 32 popped it in phone, no problem. Transferred data back and was Ok for a few hours. Swapped my battery for a freshly charged one and upon boot, phone said the card was damaged, to reformat it. So, I pulled it out and popped it in my pc. Pc said card was damaged. I opened a command prompt and ran a chkdsk /f and it fixed an issue with the file system. I then proceeded to restore my cleanrom 6.2 backup. So far so good. I am thinking it had to do with an app, but I can't be sure. Upon googling this, it seems that some people have had an issue with external sd cards with this phone.

I'm not sure exactly what brand or model you have for your SD card or when you purchase it. However if its a SanDisk and it was purchased before December 2012 there's a chance that it was part of a bad batch. I had the exact same problem with mine I have a UHs 1 32 gig SanDisk. I read somewhere on the internet that there is a known problem with SD cards from that company built before December. When I spoke with SanDisk they confirm that and said the newer batches have been corrected. Long story short if you're using an ultra high speed or for that matter any card by SanDisk call up there customer service explain to them the problem and they will send you a brand new one. The entire process took about a week for me.

Did you try my suggestion? Ive recovered numerous files using a linux live cd and/or a mac. Try putting the card in a network printer or mem card reader if linux and mac os isnt possible. Ive recovered my files, including those from a 16gb micro sd card, using those methods in the past.
Okay, so it works
Alright alright, i didn't expect this to get many responses. Anyway, it now works. It appeared to be fried, my mac, PC, ubuntu machine, and OG droid wouldn't even recognize that a card was inserted. Nor would my GS3. My solution? after turning it on and off a few times, I just left the card in it and set it aside for an hour. Lo and behold, it now works. The SD now works. It was fried, and is now unfried. I don't know how, I just guess I am lucky. Or aliens. Either way, I am happy. Not gonna jeep anything more than music on it though... Ah well, thanks for the help XDA!
If I were you, I'd back up everything on that card to my pc, and exchange it if under warranty. If not, chuck it, and purchase another card.
Not worth taking the risk again.
Consider yourself lucky so far
