I've had a 32 gig micro SD in my phone for a while now. I recently took my Siii out of my pocket only to find that it says the SD is unmounted. Odd, but not unheard of in the world of custom roms (paranoidkangdroid 2.something, rather recent though, 4.2.2 JB) So i do the sensible thing: Run into the storage menu, and lo and behold, its not registering. I pop it out and in, not registering. I reboot, and the damn thing still isn't registering. Then I take an old 2 GB micro SD and try it. This one worked just fine. 32 gig however does not. I move to my PC. Pop it in a micro to regular SD adapter, and the computer doesn't mount it. It does mount every other microSD of mine though. So can anyone tell me what the hell happened, and how I can recover my stuff?
Actually you can't, your sd card is corrupted and it's known to happen with this device that's why I always keep a weekly backup on my computer with everything. Especially the ones ordered from amazon the high capacity ones as far as I've seen.

And now its not. This is frustrating. I don't want to spend money on a new card dammit.
Try booting a linux live cd and see if you can save anything, thats how I recover deleted tomtom maps in the past.

Is the SD card damaged or can it just be reformatted with a card reader on a PC (fat I am assuming)?
I was about to start using an SD card to backup the internal storage. It doesn't sound like this is the best option and backing it to my PC would be better.
My set up to start was cleanrom 6.2 with envy kernel running fine for a week. I had my sd card disappear today twice. PNY class 10 32gb less than 2 weeks old from best buy. Popped it in my pc and it was recognized no problem. So I transferred my data, formatted in fat 32 popped it in phone, no problem. Transferred data back and was Ok for a few hours. Swapped my battery for a freshly charged one and upon boot, phone said the card was damaged, to reformat it. So, I pulled it out and popped it in my pc. Pc said card was damaged. I opened a command prompt and ran a chkdsk /f and it fixed an issue with the file system. I then proceeded to restore my cleanrom 6.2 backup. So far so good. I am thinking it had to do with an app, but I can't be sure. Upon googling this, it seems that some people have had an issue with external sd cards with this phone.

I'm not sure exactly what brand or model you have for your SD card or when you purchase it. However if its a SanDisk and it was purchased before December 2012 there's a chance that it was part of a bad batch. I had the exact same problem with mine I have a UHs 1 32 gig SanDisk. I read somewhere on the internet that there is a known problem with SD cards from that company built before December. When I spoke with SanDisk they confirm that and said the newer batches have been corrected. Long story short if you're using an ultra high speed or for that matter any card by SanDisk call up there customer service explain to them the problem and they will send you a brand new one. The entire process took about a week for me.

Did you try my suggestion? Ive recovered numerous files using a linux live cd and/or a mac. Try putting the card in a network printer or mem card reader if linux and mac os isnt possible. Ive recovered my files, including those from a 16gb micro sd card, using those methods in the past.
Okay, so it works
Alright alright, i didn't expect this to get many responses. Anyway, it now works. It appeared to be fried, my mac, PC, ubuntu machine, and OG droid wouldn't even recognize that a card was inserted. Nor would my GS3. My solution? after turning it on and off a few times, I just left the card in it and set it aside for an hour. Lo and behold, it now works. The SD now works. It was fried, and is now unfried. I don't know how, I just guess I am lucky. Or aliens. Either way, I am happy. Not gonna jeep anything more than music on it though... Ah well, thanks for the help XDA!
If I were you, I'd back up everything on that card to my pc, and exchange it if under warranty. If not, chuck it, and purchase another card.
Not worth taking the risk again.
Consider yourself lucky so far

So I have had my sd card corrupt a few times now, so far this has seemed to help me recover my data.
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download
The problem could be a sandisk SD card:
(Outside link) crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/samsung-galaxy-s3-fault-is-caused-by-sandisk-memory-cards-50010684/
I read about the SD problems after just getting the S3.. decided to get a different brand card from the store.
Related
After a flashed ROM from CM7 back to bamf 1.6.3 REMIX, I was greeted by a READ-ONLY error with my SD Card.
Tapping on it to correct the issues doesn't work. I cannot even format it. So I am sad right now. I am going to have to drive all the way back to the Verizon store and hope they will exchange it out. I have only had the phone for 2.5 weeks.
this happened to me too, but "fixed" itself
I had the same problem when I flashed Black Hole and I thought it was a problem with the ROM. I restored to Liquid 1.3 and it went away, but then came back again on a different Liquid install. Not sure what causes it, but restoring and reflashing seems to fix it for me sometimes. Using a 32GB class 6 SD and flashing from ROM Manager and from within recovery.

SanDisk 32GB Class 4
Not using the "stock" card, switched to a Komputerbay class 6 as soon as I received the phone (I had been using the card without incident for several months in a Droid previously). This weird "sd card mounted as read only" issue only happened the couple times though and not sense. ???
Swapped out the card today at the VW store. They thought it was odd. Walked away with a free MicroSD card reader.

My SD card just crapped out on me. I thought it was my phone at first and I panicked, but the 16GB from my D2 works fine in it for now. I put the 32GB SD in my Transformer, my D2, and my Win7 PC and they all choke on it. Win7 locks up Explorer and the Transformer reboots when I insert it... I guess I'll have to go to Verizon too. I haven't even had this card for a week yet... :-(
BTW, Nice screen name. My brother likes to go by that name on the home caller id system. It's funny hearing it said out loud when he calls. "Call from: Turd Ferguson!" lol
Happened to me as well, first week of owning the phone, wasn't even rooted yet. Verizon swapped the card out for free under warranty, haven't had a problem since.
Add me to this list as well. Been using a 16 gig card from my incredible and haven't had an issue yet.
On the way home yesterday, I tried to play some music from my phone, and my phone said there was no SD card availalbe. I tried several things, and sure enough, my SD card is dead. I called Verizon, and they walked me through everything I just did. They declared it dead. They said they are out of stock, but would be happy to send me a 16Gb card. Eh...NO! They said the only thing they could do was to put me in touch with Sandisk to do an RMA. So, Verizon connects me to Sandisk. I explain to them that Verizon has already declaired the card dead, and I just need an RMA # to return it. It really is just that simple, but no we have to spend the next 30 mintues doing everything a 3rd time to prove the card is dead. Then Sandisk comes back and says the 32 GB card is out of stock, but that they can send me 2 16 GB cards instead. NO!!! I don't want 2 16 GB cards!!! Just send me the 32 GB card when you have one. They said ok, but it will be at least 3-4 weeks. After an hour and a half on the phone with Verizon then Sandisk, I have an RMA number. I am going to take a chance and go to my local Verizon to see if I can just swap it out there. Until then I am back to my 16 GB Sandisk card from my Touch Pro. This is the third Sandisk microSD card that has gone bad on me. I think I will be avoiding Sandisk from now on.

I tried. The card is dead. I tried formatting using Win 7, the Thunderbolt, and also using a SD card format tool made by HP. All said it was either damage or could not be formatted. I have only had the phone 6 weeks, and I had no backup of my SD card. So backup your SD cards!!!

Yeah, clockworkmod says formating...done, but the phone and pc won't register the presence of a card. It's dead, but thanks for the suggestion.
I'm starting to get really annoyed with either this phone/android or cm7. My SD card apparently has been "damaged" yet again for the 2nd time in 2 days while the phone sat at idle. I have a backup of all the important items but this is beyond annoying to keep reformatting sd cards. Any ideas as to what might be destroying my sd card?
What's the default capacity of the card? If it's 8GB, is it the card that came with the phone? If it's not that card, did you buy the card from a reputable vendor? There are entirely too many counterfeit cards floating about these days.
It's a 16GB Class 6 card I bought on Amazon. Forgot the brand and it's not even listed on the card itself. I think it was Komputerbay. That's probably my issue.
Hmm.. Was the card sold directly by Amazon, or was it a 3rd party just selling "new/used" stuff via Amazon?
Nah it was from a 3rd party. I was being cheap and found a 16GB Class 6 card at a good price so I figured who cares what brand it is and I guess 4 months later is when I'm paying for that.
Something to try, rather than reformatting every time, is to mount the card on your computer and run fdisk. Try this link for more info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4112485&postcount=9
I realize he is talking about a Windows Mobile phone, but this has worked for me.

I'll give that a shot when I get home and more than likely I'll be smashing this card and using the stock 8GB card till I can get a real good card.

Yeah I'm betting it's a cheap p.o.s. card. Good thing I got my invite to Music Beta today! I'll upload my music there and be fine with the stock 8GB card.
Another thing that seems to work for me when I get "Damaged SD Card" or "SD Card Unexpectedly Removed" is boot into Recovery, go to Mounts and Storage, and make sure all four partitions are unmounted. I don't know why they are mounted on boot, but it seems like when I get an SD issue, I go into Mounts and Storage and one of them has to be unmounted.
This usually happens when I have recently mounted USB storage to transfer files to/from my computer. If anybody has some insight into this, please speak up! Thanks.
I can't seem to format my MicroSD from the phone, cwm or PC. I can't upload or delete files. Its stuck with my old files on it for some reason!?!?!?

There is no lock on it, its a microSD...
Funny thing is I tried every possible way to Format it and all show "format complete" then when I remove the card and plug it back it shows the old content again...
Well its a common issue apparently, contacted Sandisk and had my MicroSD RMAed. Now the thing is I don't want this to happen again, who might know why my Android locked my MicroSD? Is it the custom ROM, is it an app that grants read write access like Titanium backup? What could it be?
I've never had it happen to my San's lol try putting it in an SD adapter already in a locked position then put in unlocked position and place in computer

Try going to the micro sd folder on your computer and highlight all the folders and delete if you havent tried
I tried everything, had it RMAed now got a new microSD from Sandisk...cost me shipping so hope this doesn't happen again...
Did you try a low level format

Every possible formatting way was tried. CMD, special software, through windows (quick and full), through the cell phone, directly through a microDS reader, different microSD readers, different computers.
Like I said I tried everything!

sounds like u didn't low level format, to be honest. I less u specifically used a low level format tool or did this command from Linux:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda1 bs=1m
u didn't try everything my friend. none the less doesn't matter, glad u got a new one on the way
i have the same problem i format on my galaxy note plug in to my pc i format it change it to ntfs and once is finished 100% formated i un plug it out y plug it in and everything comes back like if it didnt happend what i did help
You have to RMA it there is no other way, it is locked for good. I spoke with SanDisk and that's what they told me. It happens allot with the 32GB microSDs when used in cell phones.
the same thing happened to me with my sandisk 32 gb class 4 card.
it wouldn't format or write any files to the card
but it would still read the files and copy them off the card without any problem
It was a very odd issue. Considering the card has a 5 year warranty i contacted sandisk and they said it was defective and they gave me a prepaid label to send it to them.
i told them it had personal info on the card so they said to snap it in half or drill a hole in it which i did. So I sent it in then the day after they got it they sent me a replacement. Why did you have to pay shipping? Everything was free for me.
im having an issue all of a sudden where the external sd card wont delete anything i tell it too. i mount it to the computer and delete things that way and copy things on but when i disconnect everything is like it was nothing happened.
also formatting it in setting via storage did nothing all the files are left in perfect order
Ive even mounted to the computer, formatted in MY COMPUTER and it says its completely empty. Then i unmount it and guess what nothing was touched. can someone please help
I take that back even deleting within my files does nothing.
I just stuck in my sandisk 16gb class 4 and it isnt having any issues so it must be the 32 gb sandisk class 4 is the card messed up?
I'm using it with a skyrocket and im on skyics with the latest base. I'm posting here because this card has been in many other phones and never had an issue till now
pwnerman-
Reading your description of the issue .. have you tried physically removing it from the phone and inserting (either by adapter or multimedia slot as most computers have now-a-days) directly to your computer ?
Meaning .. have you tried doing this without it being in the phone ?
Yes .. I snapped at you in the thread and I apologize .. with all the BS going on in there, more and more people are getting on edge.
My answer in the thread also stands in regards to how the card is formatted. I honestly do not know your experience with computers .. thats why I threw it in there.
I have a Sandisk 64GB card in my Skyrocket running Seans latest ROM .. only way I could format my card FAT32 was actually using a single command line program called "fat32format.exe" .. and with ALL of Seans ROM's, I have never had any issues with SDCards at all.
Here is my original thread about the Sandisk 64GB http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1586295
I've done everything but attaching it directly to the computer because I have no adapter to do so. I bought one of the cheap dollar ones on Amazon a few hours ago. I've used that card in like 10 phones on triple as many roms and never had a issue till now. I do think it could be a Rom issue because the other Guy was having issues and this was the first time I did anything on the card since switching to the 4.0 skyics Rom.
I even put it in my captivate and it wouldn't even format in recovery mode. So I honestly don't know considering it wont work in the captivate either

Hey guys, would appreciate if someone could give me some help on an issue I'm having with a 32 gig SD card (SanDisk Class 10 bought at Best Buy so it's definitely legit). Anyway it worked great for a long time, however, recently I tried to use the Gremlin Remover on my phone, it crashed and burned in the middle of the process as I've heard can often happen with Gremlin Remover. I did a restart, and after that problems began to appear with my SD card. Almost all the data on it disappeared and it started to constantly mount and dismount from the phone. I thought it might have just been the failed Gremlin Remover run, so I reformatted it in Windows, put Gremlin Remover, black hole system wipe, and my ROM back on and did a complete wipe and restore of the phone, card seemed to be working okay, but then the next day it started dismounting and saying it had been unexpectedly disconnected again. Now I can't get the phone to recognize it at all so I can't connect it to Windows to get it formatted. The strange thing is that my tablet (Asus Transformer TF300) can mount the card and read the data on it. However I can't reformat from the Asus since it won't mount as USB storage in Windows. Is it probable that the card is completely fried? Or does it maybe just need a good reformat? If a reformat would fix it, how would I go about doing it? Is it possible to reformat through terminal commands? Or some other way? Anyway thanks in advance for any help.
I too have a Sandisk class 10 uSD card that just recently failed on me. It started losing files one night, then it stopped mounting. Now it just shows up as a 30-something MB drive that I can't format. I have tried many methods of restoring it to no avail.
Maybe try to format it using external sd card reader? microsd to sd?
I think there's a known issue with these cards. I bought one of these a couple wks ago from a deal posted on slickdeals.
I haven't had any problems with mine but after the purchase I started reading comments in the thread about how these cards are known for mount/dismount trouble and high failure rates. I believe in still under my return period with Amazon so I've been debating exchanging it for a different brand like Samsung. Sorry, I'm at work posting on my phone so I can't post a link.

This has already been tried, without any luck. I tried to format via Disk Utility on Mac OS, numerous drives tools under Windows, and gdisk under Ubuntu, and nothing will revive it. Zed's dead.

I too saw a number of reviews that noted the same type of failure, so I may end up giving another brand (like Samsung, as you suggested) my business. Sandisk does not seem to want to take any responsibility for my uSD card failing after only 8 months of normal use.
