This isn't a problem for myself, I'm trying to help my brother's girl
Basically, when her phone has the SD card inserted, it says its unmounted yet it won't mount. So, tried plugging it into a PC with an SD adaptor and it doesn't even show up...
Is there a way to fix this or is this SD card busted?
Thanks in advance

The fact that you cant even get the card to show up as mounted in Windows is not a good sign.
Was there important stuff on there? If so, you could try one of the SD Card recovery programs. I've used them in the past, but if you cant even get it to mount in the PC, they are probably not going to work.
But, to me, it sounds like the card is busted. Do you have another one you could test the phone and adapter with? If not, try and exchange it if it isnt too old.

Tried putting it into another phone and its still showing up as Unmounted with no option to remount it.
All that was on was a few music files and other assorted useless junk

What's her SD?
Some fast and high capacity micro SDHC are damaged I don't know why. I tried once a Patriot 32gb class 10 and it got broken in about 1 month of usage. The same occurred with a Sandisk 16gb class 10. Don't know if it's an app that is causing it. Now I'm using a Samsung 16gb class 2 normally. The broken SD were recognized in Windows as RAW partition.
I tried some Fixers without success. You may try them.

Just a note: Most android devices only allow FAT(32) partitions. NTFS shouldn't work.
I can't seem to format my MicroSD from the phone, cwm or PC. I can't upload or delete files. Its stuck with my old files on it for some reason!?!?!?
Your microSD or your internal SD?

There is no lock on it, its a microSD...
Funny thing is I tried every possible way to Format it and all show "format complete" then when I remove the card and plug it back it shows the old content again...
Well its a common issue apparently, contacted Sandisk and had my MicroSD RMAed. Now the thing is I don't want this to happen again, who might know why my Android locked my MicroSD? Is it the custom ROM, is it an app that grants read write access like Titanium backup? What could it be?
I've never had it happen to my San's lol try putting it in an SD adapter already in a locked position then put in unlocked position and place in computer

Try going to the micro sd folder on your computer and highlight all the folders and delete if you havent tried
I tried everything, had it RMAed now got a new microSD from Sandisk...cost me shipping so hope this doesn't happen again...
Did you try a low level format
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
Every possible formatting way was tried. CMD, special software, through windows (quick and full), through the cell phone, directly through a microDS reader, different microSD readers, different computers.
Like I said I tried everything!

sounds like u didn't low level format, to be honest. I less u specifically used a low level format tool or did this command from Linux:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda1 bs=1m
u didn't try everything my friend. none the less doesn't matter, glad u got a new one on the way
i have the same problem i format on my galaxy note plug in to my pc i format it change it to ntfs and once is finished 100% formated i un plug it out y plug it in and everything comes back like if it didnt happend what i did help
You have to RMA it there is no other way, it is locked for good. I spoke with SanDisk and that's what they told me. It happens allot with the 32GB microSDs when used in cell phones.
the same thing happened to me with my sandisk 32 gb class 4 card.
it wouldn't format or write any files to the card
but it would still read the files and copy them off the card without any problem
It was a very odd issue. Considering the card has a 5 year warranty i contacted sandisk and they said it was defective and they gave me a prepaid label to send it to them.
i told them it had personal info on the card so they said to snap it in half or drill a hole in it which i did. So I sent it in then the day after they got it they sent me a replacement. Why did you have to pay shipping? Everything was free for me.
I ordered a new Sandisk 64GB SDcard but after reading many threads on the topic here, I have a question about the format. From what I've read, in order to have the card recognized by CWM and other custom recoveries, it needs to be in Fat32 format rather than exFAT. Many people have suggested that you can use a Windows based 3rd party software to properly format the card, but I don't have a SDcard reader on my PC so I'm not sure what my options are at this point. I tried searching the forums about posts from people in a similar situation (i.e no card reader on PC) but was unable to find anything. Any suggestions or ideas on what I can do to retain the full 64gb capacity and still be compatible with CWM without having access to a SDcard reader? Thanks very much.

Will need to find a PC to format it. It comes ExFat and not only recoveries won't see it but roms/kernels may not see it either. The program is guiformat. Can Google and find it easily. The site is little confusing. Click on the picture of the app and it will give you the download.

Thanks very much for the response. I was afraid that would be the case. I honestly don't know anyone who has access to a SDcard reader, so I might have to just end up returning it to Newegg for a 32gb version instead. Thanks again, I sincerely appreciate the info.

I thought these issues were exclusive to just the 64gb variants.
I actually dug around in my basement and found my old PC tower that has a built in 8 in 1 card reader that supports SDcards. If I can find a way to extract it from the old tower and hook it up to my new one, I may yet find a way. Thanks again for the continued help.

Yea. Only difference between 32 and 64 is don't need a special program for 32. Windows can do it natively. Good luck.
I realize this question may sound ridiculous, but I figured there was no harm in asking.
Is there any chance I could stick the 64gb card in my old Droid X, connect it to my PC, and then use the program you suggested to format it to FAT32? I guess I was hoping the phone could act like a SDcard reader of sorts for my PC. Thanks again.

I had a droid x but I'm not sure if it handled a 64gb but if it does you should be able to format it the way you want.I bought a $4 usb micro sd card reader for my SanDisk 64gb card and I hooked it up to my pc usb slot and used a partition program and was able to successfully format it to fat32.Have not had one problem with it being recognized by any Rom or kernel, think it gave me 59gb total after it formatted.

Thanks. I had no idea they were that cheap. If the DX idea doesn't work, I'll just stop by my local Microcenter or Best Buy and pick one up. Thanks again.
Edit: Am I correct in assuming the product linked below would do the job? If so, it's only $1.99 so I think i could manage to afford one.

Won't work from phone but go to radio shack and get cheapest one of these you can find. May be able to get with 1GB card. Take pic and show them what you want. Sorry I been busy and didn't think about it. Good call Droid. $12 max.
So I purchased a SDcard reader, hooked it up to my PC, and formatted it with the guiformat program that was recommended earlier in the thread. I set the allocation size to 65536 and left the Quick Format option checked. However, after it finished, both Windows and the S3 only show it as a 32gb card (approximately 27 GB total storage space). Is there another formatting program for Windows or any other ideas you could recommend so I can get the correct storage size (64gb)? Thanks again.

I tried using a few different programs to format the card to FAT32 but every time it still showed up as a 32gb card. I ordered it directly from Newegg so I don't think the authenticity is an issue, but I have no idea what could've caused this to happen. Regardless, I sincerely appreciate the help I got from the folks in this thread and via PM. Thanks again for your time and effort.

There's another thread detailing all the issues with exfat 64gb cards here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1698672
I encountered the same "hiccup" as you pertaining to the 32 gb issue.
I ended up using a program called EaseUS Partition Master to finally get all back to normal. I wiped my sdxc partition, it did come back with some message that something didn't complete ???, but then I formatted as fat 32, primary partition, and got the entire 64gb back and so far... ( fingers crossed ),.. all seems to be working well.
With the card formatted as exfat, as soon as I got around 8 gb of music, photos, etc.. the card simply would loose its' file structure and just start acting weird. All files would still show up if I pulled the card and put in an sdxc reader on the PC... but my Galaxy S3 never would recover them properly.
This has got to be some kind of "bug" in the phone as you'll see in the other thread this problem is quite common.
For what it's worth.. I seemed to have much better luck transferring large chunks of data with the card in the reader opposed to hooked up while in the phone. ( speeds kept dropping via the phone cable )
Good luck!
Thanks for the info. I actually tried the EaseUS Partition program you referred to, but it still remained at 32gb. I ended up returning the card to Newegg and will just get a 32gb to replace it as I'd rather not have to repeat this process. Thanks again for the useful info. I sincerely appreciate it.
Sure... I vaguely remember I had to try to format as NTFS first for some reason before I got it to properly format with entire 64gb fat 32. I spent countless hours trying to work out all the bugs with this card and exfat. Samsung states the Galaxy S3 phone is compatible with it... but there is definitely an issue with file structure once you start loading it up.
Quick update:
I ended up returning my Sandisk 64GB and replaced it with a G.Skill 32GB (Class 10) that was on sale for $22 from Newegg. Surprisingly, it came already formatted as FAT32 so I didn't have to mess around with it to get it working with CWM and custom kernels. Seems to be working great so far, and is plenty fast, so I'm pretty happy with the end result. I guess it might have been nice to have an extra ~30GB, but I mainly stream all my music/video anyways, so I'll have a tough time even filling up this new card.
Thanks again to everyone who gave me their advice and input on trying to get my first SDcard formatted correctly. Even though I wasn't ultimately successful, I sincerely appreciate everyone's time & effort.

Hello everyone. I have been having issue after issue with this 64GB MicroSD I got recently. I bought it at a local Best Buy the other day (there was a sale going on; $49). It is a SanDisk 64GB Class 10 MicroSD. I got home and formatted the card. I formatted it in FAT32 with the HP USB Format Tool that I always use for SD cards. Well, the moment I put it in, it said that it was damaged (occasionally said that it was blank). I tried removing it and reinserting it, and the same thing. I have tried putting it in a different GSIII as well as a Droid Razr, and same. I tried reformatting with the same tool, but this time doing a long format. Same problem. I also tried EaseUS Partition Master. Same problem. I have also tried using a live build of Parted-Magic. Same problem.
I am starting to think that the card is a dud, except for two things:
1: It works fine in my PC. It reads the exact amount free, it shows all of my files, and it let's me play them with no issue.
2: It shows up in Clockworkmod just fine. I can back up to it and flash from it with no problem.
I am really just left here scratching my head as to what the problem could be. I made sure that all of the settings are correct each time I formatted it. I have tried switching ROMs and still get the same problem. I have tried just about everything that I can possibly think of to get this card working. I am hoping that someone can help me with my problem.
You can call them and they will send you a new one, I did it about a month ago.
I was having similar problems.

Do you think it is a problem with the card? If so, I am still within my return limit at Best Buy. I can just take it there instead of waiting on a replacement. Just wasn't sure if it was the card or something I was doing.
It's a problem with the card. I had the same problem with a 32Gb card from Sandisk. Files could be seen for a day and then disappear! I could tell the camera app to save to the card and that would also work for a while only. Fo/ders create on the card via the computer would do the same. In one situation I created a folder on the PC, copied a film to it, viewed the film in my phone add took some still from the film. The next day the film and folder was gone put the still -stored on the internal memery- were still there.
Contact sandisk. They must be aware of the issue.

OK. I went to Best Buy and exchanged it the other day (lucky I bought it when I did; they marked it up to $99!). I am still having the same problem. I am not sure what I am doing right. I have been formatting and copying the files while it isn't in my phone. I am using my card reader in my desktop. Could this be the problem? Am I able to format it while it is in the phone without using the phone's format tool?
First you use the tool to format the card to fat32. Once you do that you are to install it to your phone then use the phone to reformat the card again so the phone can use it. Card will have issues with phones when you format it with the tool. Your suppose to format it with the phone as well after for it to properly work. Good luck

Just thought I should post on here and let you all know what my problem was. I got it all sorted out and Play Music is showing all of my music. My problem was that EaseUS defaulted the partition as a "logical" partition. This was leaving about 75MB unformatted, and Android didn't know how to handle that empty space. After changing that to a "primary" partition, I have not had any problems. Serious derp on my part. Lol

I found that if you format the card from in the phone and then transfer data, you shouldn't have any issue.

Hey guys, would appreciate if someone could give me some help on an issue I'm having with a 32 gig SD card (SanDisk Class 10 bought at Best Buy so it's definitely legit). Anyway it worked great for a long time, however, recently I tried to use the Gremlin Remover on my phone, it crashed and burned in the middle of the process as I've heard can often happen with Gremlin Remover. I did a restart, and after that problems began to appear with my SD card. Almost all the data on it disappeared and it started to constantly mount and dismount from the phone. I thought it might have just been the failed Gremlin Remover run, so I reformatted it in Windows, put Gremlin Remover, black hole system wipe, and my ROM back on and did a complete wipe and restore of the phone, card seemed to be working okay, but then the next day it started dismounting and saying it had been unexpectedly disconnected again. Now I can't get the phone to recognize it at all so I can't connect it to Windows to get it formatted. The strange thing is that my tablet (Asus Transformer TF300) can mount the card and read the data on it. However I can't reformat from the Asus since it won't mount as USB storage in Windows. Is it probable that the card is completely fried? Or does it maybe just need a good reformat? If a reformat would fix it, how would I go about doing it? Is it possible to reformat through terminal commands? Or some other way? Anyway thanks in advance for any help.
I too have a Sandisk class 10 uSD card that just recently failed on me. It started losing files one night, then it stopped mounting. Now it just shows up as a 30-something MB drive that I can't format. I have tried many methods of restoring it to no avail.
Maybe try to format it using external sd card reader? microsd to sd?
I think there's a known issue with these cards. I bought one of these a couple wks ago from a deal posted on slickdeals.
I haven't had any problems with mine but after the purchase I started reading comments in the thread about how these cards are known for mount/dismount trouble and high failure rates. I believe in still under my return period with Amazon so I've been debating exchanging it for a different brand like Samsung. Sorry, I'm at work posting on my phone so I can't post a link.

This has already been tried, without any luck. I tried to format via Disk Utility on Mac OS, numerous drives tools under Windows, and gdisk under Ubuntu, and nothing will revive it. Zed's dead.

I too saw a number of reviews that noted the same type of failure, so I may end up giving another brand (like Samsung, as you suggested) my business. Sandisk does not seem to want to take any responsibility for my uSD card failing after only 8 months of normal use.
