[Q] Keep new firmware but use old modem/rpm? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I have a rooted/unlocked bootloader with the stock Touchwiz ROM on my phone, and since we're all having problems with the slow LTE speeds, I was wondering if I would be able to flash the modem/radio from the MD1 or KL3 onto my phone for better signal/speeds?

You can flash them, but it may or may not break some features especially if you flash an AIO (All In One)

Thanks! I'll have to dig around here and see what I can find

This worked for me, but it took a few tries. The first couple times gps got screwed up. I ended up doing a factory reset, then odin flashed back to mb1 (unrooting) . Then I let it update, rooted again with the md3 bootchain and then flashed the mb1 firmware. Happy to say Gps lock is instant and I'm back to normal 4g sppeds
Screw you Verizon!!! Why should we have to fix something you broke!

You might also consider some of the custom TW ROMS that have all the OTA has to offer and more with better stability. Synergy, Hyperdrive and MOAR come to mind, but there are others as well in the development section.

I took the update the other day, but I flashed the previous one a few days ago.works fine

What portion of the "hack" affects the reception

Rooting, ROMS, Kernels, Basebands, MODs, So many flashing options. I lost my reception at my cottage which is on an extended network roaming. As soon as I go into that area everything drops, voice and data. I Odined back to Stock unrooted did a factory reset and the service returned flawlessly.
I was on latest baseband J1 at the time, SynergyROM, MIEA backed up, bootloader unlocked.
Now I'm getting itchy fingers again. Want to go back to Synergy, etc. But I DON'T want to loose my reception while I'm at the cottage for a few days. It's my only connection to the world.
Starting from scratch again, what could've been the culprit?

There is a new baseband kernel. Its the (K1) kernel. Its in scrolsers ROMS and pretty much on every touchwiz d2vzw ROM.

Baseband updates certainly do affect signal. It seems that the stock one works best for you.
The good news is you don't need to update baseband to go to a different ROM. You can keep your stock radio and flash a new jellybean leak without altering your signal.

I've also noticed that many ROMs have roaming disabled by default. Not sure if it makes a difference, but might help.

S3 still stuck on 4.0.4

I've been on 4.0.4 since I bought the phone, and I haven't received any of the OTA updates. I tried all the usual tricks (clearing google frameworks, etc) and it still won't pop up. I search high and low here for an answer and didn't get anything. Suggestions?
Are you using on Verizon network?

Did try Samsung Kies?

Yes I'm on Verizon, no I haven't tried it with kies (guide?)
I am assuming you tried manually cheocking for a update under settings
I use to have this problem being on the Verizon stock Rom. I was on 4.1.1 K3 and I could not receive any OTA's either. Cleared google frameworks, kept checking for the software updates in settings, ect ect. I tried it ALL, even tried to do it in Samsung Kies. It use to always tell me the KIES was not able to update my phone or something like that. I finally rooted my phone and I was on custom Roms for a long while. Went back to stock K3 with the Tar file. All of a sudden I was able to receive the MB1 OTA and the latest MF1 OTA. I'm thinking maybe the software that shipped on my phone was glitchy? I use to think it was my actual phone and something was wrong with it but I guess it's not because now when ever I flash that TAR file to get back to Verizon Stock K3 build I am always able to receive the MB1 OTA and on and on to whatever OTA that'll bring me to the latest Verizon Stock Rom. That's what fixed it for me. I don't know if it'll work for you, it just something that worked for me.
I would honestly say, that if you're ok with rooting to just root now and install BoneStock. Arguably the most stable ROM around.

Ok, well if it worked then it's not like it's completely busted.
Try to odin completely back to stock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974114
This will ensure everything is perfectly stock, flash the mb1 image and then ota to mf1 and reroot, then once everything is on the mf1 base, only flash TW roms based on the mf1 base or use AOSP roms.

I aslo have camera errors today after flashing the Synergy ROM (r484). I'm set on this ROM because it is the only one I've found that will
Support other cell carriers on a Verizon SCH-I535 and I need to switch carriers in a couple of days. Some one in a developer thread said that it should get the older firmware flashed to fix the camera or else I could choose to change the kernal. My firmware is I535VRBMF1 and what was sugested was MB1 firmware. I have several questions. What would I risk or loose by going to the older firmware? How do I get it and flash it (I have Odin but haven't used it yet). The Kernal came with Synergy ROM and is refered to as Ziggy's.

You don't stand to lose anything except possibly data connection and speed, and signal strength and quality. You can find the all in one (AIO) zips from Invisiblek's thread, just flash VRBMB1 aio in recovery. Invisiblek does not make any of these that are Odin flashable for JB and beyond.

Yes, if you took the 4.3 OTA and try to flash an older stock build, you will brick your phone. As it stands right now, if you took the OTA you can root it, but you are still stuck on that stock ROM.
What would happen if we managed to flash a stock ROM like 4.4.x? I've seen so much talk about going backwards, they've locked us out of going backwards so let's go forward...maybe.

As of right now if you took the OTA update to Android 4.3 your hopes of doing anything custom other than rooting your phone are hopeless.
In order to flash a ROM such as Android 4.4.X aka KitKat you need a custom recovery manager. To be able to flash anything the first thing you need is an unlocked bootloader. The OTA update has locked the bootloader down so that you if you were to try and install CWM or TWRP recovery as soon as you boot into recovery mode you are going to get a Yellow Triangle that says "Verizon has detected unauthorized software on this phone, please turn off your phone and take it in to your nearest Verizon Store.
If you turn off your phone and power it back on you will keep getting that message...
The only way around it is to boot into Download Mode -> Vol Down + HOME for 2 Seconds then hit Power (if i remember correctly). After you boot into download mode you can then boot your phone back up regularly.
If you have made the mistake of trying to put a custom recovery on your phone you can put the stock recovery back on your SGS3 (stock recovery is better than no recovery) by downloading the recovery image and overwriting your custom recovery with the command "dd" in Android Terminal Emulator. For this to work you must be rooted.
Here is a link to the tutorial which shows you how to write the stock bootloader and stock recovery back to your Verizon (d2vzw) SGS3 in case you have made this mistake...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2581166
In that thread pay close attention to the 2nd post as it shows you the commands to use to write your stock recovery or stock bootloader back to your phone.
I know it sucks that we can't put custom ROM's or a custom recovery (this hurts the most!) on our Verizon phone for now at least...
COME ON VERIZON EMPLOYEES! LEAK THE UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER! WE WONT TELL!
Maybe we will get lucky and some international version will come out and we can use that...
I remember awhile back that ASUS locked their bootloader on their Transformer tablet and you could request it from ASUS and they made you fill out this form saying that you understood by unlocking your bootloader you could not make a claim for a warranty. Why can't Verizon do that!?
I pray someone works this out eventually...

That would still require you to have a custom recovery. Also that would still most likely brick your phone cause the only 4.4 ROMS are AOSP based, meaning it installs a different kernel than the stock one. Thus when when the phone would boot up it would check the the kernels signature and would brick upon not finding one.
So I guess all hopes of finding a way around this are hopeless...for now. If u remember, a few months ago, President Obama signed a bill for Verizon Wireless to monitor all cell phone activity without the consent of the user, in conjunction with the NSA. I suspect that this is the reason why only Verizon has opted to completely lock down the bootloader because it contains code embedded in the bootloader (or partitions pertaining to bootloaders, aboot, and such) that allow National Security Agencies to implement spyware and tracking or listening programs. This is a testament to the sub-communist movement that is slowly taking hold in this so-called "free" society that was brought forth by our forefathers.
But back on subject - I just upgraded from a HTC Thunderbolt to SGS3 because most development for the Thunderbolt was few and far between. Upon purchasing my shiny new device, this Abomination of Android that is 4.3 was already being OTA'd. Had I known then....man, had I known then. It's a sad time for superusers all-over Verizon's crummy wireless empire.

It would be wise to stay on the MF1 baseband until you decide you want a 4.3 TW ROM. I Was on an AOSP 4.4 ROM with MF1 and had no problems.

You cannot be on anything older than a 4.3 ROM with the ML1 radio... you WILL brick.
There is a ML1 radio available for download and all you have to do is flash it in recovery. But like I said, you must be on a 4.3-4.4 based ROM to flash it without bricking.

Ok great thank you. So if I try a 4.3 ROM and decide to go back to 4.1 or restore my ROM I should also flash the old mf1.

That's not true, at least not for all phones. I flashed the ML1 radio while running a 4.1.2 Touchwiz ROM and everything worked fine. My signal and data speeds seemed worse than on the MF1 radio though, so I flashed back.

Correct.
Here's the link for ML1:

I could be wrong but from what I've read, many people must be extra careful about what radios they flash and when... especially with ML1... for some reason.

Ml1 radio will work fine on any rom you run. If you took the OTA update, then you are unable to flash any radios since you have the entire ML1 firmware. The bootloader needs every part of the firmware in order to boot.
Since the flashable zip is only the radio for ML1, there's no danger of this doing any harm or bricking your phone. People have reported much better signal strength when using the ML1 radio with the MF1 firmware on 4.3 roms. I would stay on MF1 if using a 4.1.2 rom. I'm actually still using MB1.

You're mostly right, if you flash the entire ML1 firmware you will brick, and that will cause problems when you run a 4.1.2 rom. Flashing the modem only has no bad effects except for possibly decreased signal strength.

Thanks for the extra info man.
You're a lot of help, even the other day.
Do you think ML1 would be any better for me than MR1 on an AOSP 4.4 ROM?

It's possible, but you aren't going to do any harm testing it out.

VRUCML1 should work a little better on AOSP than VRBMF1 so long as it includes commits like this
