As a Z user, I aswell am a little peeved. But all is well, I guess.

Well it says that the phone is only water "resistant" on GSM Arena, CNET & Sammobile and also that the camera has been downgraded to 8 megapixel.

Liquipel has confirmed that they will have waterproofing available for our devices.
$80 isnt bad either.

Liquipel is a gimmick when used on cell phones. It's borderline being a scam actually.
The technology is impressive and it has merits but these demos of cell phones being dunked are very deceiving, let me explain why...
First off a little history with other gimmicks. Long time ago probably before many around here were kicking they used to demo these "amazing" knives under differing brands (Ginsu probably the most familiar). They would do crazy things with them at the displays in malls, fairs, etc. One was cutting deep grooves in the head of a hammer. People would reach for their wallet in droves to buy after seeing that. I mean a knife that could cut through a hammer? Problem is no one ever really scrutinized and realized the "hammer" had a head made of lead. Lead is very soft and any iron or ss blade will cut it with little dulling compared to say trying that on an Estwing. BTW if you did try this with a real hammer (I did!) you'd find your blade about as ruined as if you took a chainsaw to a steel door.
So what does this have to do with Liquipel and their demos? Simple. They never tell you what the "water" they use really is. I'm willing to bet it's distilled water with a very low conductivity. Others that have this treatment done to their devices are reporting their device stops working after a day or two! Of course, you're using tap water which has far more minerals and therefore much higher conductivity.
It gets even worse! The average spill (beer, soda pop, fruit juice, etc.) not only is much more conductive but can be acidic, leave sticky residues which are often highly hygroscopic (which means they will absorb moisture from the air when it gets humid, becoming active again), and this is just bad to have in your phone!
Toilet swims? Don't even ask!
Saltwater which a device would encounter if offshore fishing or beach going would probably be the worst thing ever that could happen to your phone.
Liquipel can keep the fluid from wetting your treated parts but it cannot keep it OUT of the chassis/enclosure. That's where this is flawed. Once you have fluid penetration (no sick jokes, please!) your device is contaminated and will never be the same. If you want a waterproof or water resistant device you must keep the water out, PERIOD! This requires a completely different strategy starting with the chassis and any physical interface that must connect from the outside to in. Real solutions are never pretty or compact. If you eliminated the headphone jack and USB port relying on wireless charging and bt/wifi for sound, etc. it would be possible. The buttons would be gasketed like waterproof wristwatches, for example. The speaker and mic would be a challenge depending on the water (depth) rating. A meter rating would be no real issue but 100 meters would!
Finally, getting your device treated gives you a false sense of security! There is nothing worse than believing you're OK when in fact you won't be as careful and allowing your device to get dunked!

Regarding Active - it will have a smaller screen, and is only water resistant - highlighting this as I believe many people think it is also shock/impact proof.
Seidio is developing their Obex for SGS4, I will check it out once it is released, gives water and impact resistance.
http://www.seidioonline.com/samsung-galaxy-s4-obex-case-holster-black-p/bd2-hwssgs4-bk.htm
Although it is a niche product, adds too much bulk, and worsens the mic and speaker quality.

It's always about compromise. TBH if you're the active type that wants to keep your phone working the easiest way is to put it in the equivalent of a storm case. Otter makes one that's in the ATT stores. TBH that's the only way I would carry my phone to the beach. Sand gets into everything and wrecks it - fast!
I have actually seen folks at the beach using a macbook!
Don't worry, it won't be long before connectivity will be a part of life, thought reading, embedded devices, and anti tinfoil hat tech!

According to some comments in the video, this phone is also only a dual core S4 Plus MSM8960, which is even further of a disappointment.

well you could always just but a waterproof S4 here https://www.liquipel.com/
or get your current phone treated.
I contacted them, they're still testing the treatment and it's effect on things like air gestures, etc. should be ready soon tho. I'm considering getting this done, but wonder how it effects things like heat venting, etc

Engadget review is up.....

http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/20/t-mobile-g2x-review/
Looks like what I expected. What's interesting is they specifically mention how it's future proofing by supporting AT&T 3G. At this point if it doesn't support it, then it's going to blow up on T-Mobile.
Also didn't notice complaints of reboots either! So could be software issue for me or maybe hardware. OR maybe they didn't use it enough!?
Interesting they mentioned the backlight bleed and I did notice that the touchscreen was not nearly as responsive as my Incredible.
Supposedly the touchscreen sensitivity is on purpose to stop unexpected touches. I think it'll be fine once we adjust. I'm also used to the super sensitive Incredible screen.
I'm pretty happy with this review.
They covered everything and surprisingly, Engadget didn't throw in any Apple fanboy remarks.
I read that review and the android community review.
I want that phone to work on Canadian bands (ATT). Please.
Thank you
I knew it would be an 8 before they even posted the review.
Whats funny is they said it was the best android phone out there and scored it lower than the P.O.S Atrix......lol
Myriam is definitely the best of that crew to review this phone. She's a big time T-Mobile fan and a camera nut, and while she does have an iPhone or two, she does really like Android.
Might be the most honest 8 I've seen them do, and if she'd reviewed the Atrix, I know it'd have been scored lower.

Different reviewers have different opinions.
All the good people left and it definatley shows on the site now. Tough to read the review when its not done by Josh or Chris.
Wish this guy would get his head on straight holding the G2x slanted the entire review an some one needed to tell him that the glair in the room ya couldnt even see what was on the screen. he surely didnt know much about the G2x in that i dont care how it compares in size to other phones thickness, blah poor reviewer. Give me meaty technical details an demostrations not repeating over again that the screen has some bleeding issues
Myriam, female, is one of the most experienced gadget bloggers out there, period.
Why do you need more technical info in a phone review? You know the specs already.
It's an 8/10 phone because the screen could be better, 2.2 is a year old, and it should take better pics.
There are no 10/10 phones.
8/10 on the review.
Could have been better organized, not so repetitive. Show more apps working rather than just flipping between home screens, actually test call quality and speeds, and major fail not testing GPS. With so many TMo users with bonky GPS on their Vibrants in line for upgrades leaving that out is incomprehensible.
didn't most other websites show that the G2x display was better than SAMOLED displays? especially the one by Lisa, that one showed a striking difference b/w the two. Everything else was expected in Engadget's review

LOL, that guy is actually a girl. I thought she was a guy for 2 years. Turns out she is just a manly girl.
I think 'She' was originally a man.
So does no one realize that if/when AT&T buys T-mobile that they'll get T-mobile's frequency as well? This whole "works with AT&T" thing is just a ruse to go out and buy a new phone. Your old phone will work fine.

Why the Nexus One is Still The BEST Phone

I know it has been years since the Nexus One was released.. but when it comes to durability ..it is still the best phone..at least in smartphones.
I have dropped my smartphones literally hundreds of times and nothing has ever happened.
However..the biggest thing.. I dropped my Nexus One in the toilet and left it there for like 10 minutes and it still works fine. Everything works exactly the same.
I even wrote a detailed story here about my Nexus ONe:
http://appdigy.com/375/the-power-of-the-nexus-one/
I have nothing against the N1 but just because it is durable does not mean it is the best phone.
In your eyes, yes. But "best" is subjective and it is different for everyone. The N1 is still a nice phone though, because it had incredible specs for its time and right now can be classified as mid to low range whereas other phones of its time would be classified as crap

That might be true but I still feel when it comes to durability, it is superior than the phones of today.
If you drop an SG3 or an iPhone 5, it will most likely crack but my Nexus One didn't.

This is true but it seems to be a sad move "forward" in technology in general. Cars used to stronger in the past but now they are just thin sheets of metal...
Phones once idiot proof are now broken with a simple drop.
I don't if the technology that comes out now is weaker but I am sure if companies wanted they could make a phone that would be super strong... they dont, i assume to keep people buying more phones.
Its a sad world.

They don't because they are focused on making sexy thin phones. There are cases available (such as otter box, life proof, and more) if someone wants to make their phone durable. Problem is people who don't think they need a case like that end up dropping their phone and breaking it

Is even $70 really a lot to spend to protect a $700 phone ?
I don't think so, that's only 10% of the device cost - and you can get an Otterbox or whatever for even less than that.
I hardly ever drop my phone, so a rugged case isn't a big concern for me. My last phone that I had before this, I dropped it maybe two times the entire two years I had it, and it looks practically brand-new. I've never dropped a phone in a toilet (... or anything for that matter) and I honestly don't understand how that happens.
My friend has dropped her S3 more times than I think she can count, without a case or anything, and it's still fine. I wouldn't call it indestructible, but it's clearly not as fragile as fine china or anything.

LOL!
If I got **** not only on a phone, but IN it...
Sure, I'm friends with humans who carry faeces around inside them a better part of their day - but we don't usually trade. I'm not going to keep a phone if I've been 2 Girls 1 Cup intimate with it.
N1 had (and still has) serious Touch/Multitouch issues. Not the best phone, in fact it was a failure (for developers a jewel maybe)

I'm bored of this whole "It's plastic so it sucks" argument.

I don't understand the hate for plastic, it's far more durable than metal for the function of a phone. I've actually got the One now, it's waiting to be exchanged for the GS4 but sadly that has been delayed until May now. When using the One I was constantly worried about dropping it, I kept checking for scratched, it just made me paranoid. I even went searching for cases and I realized I hate the people who go on about the design of the phone and then wrap it in an ugly cheap case anyways. I put the frigging phone in my pocket, nothing else there and it gets a scuff some how. I realized I cannot live with the One, it's not fun to use and I'm constantly worried about it getting damaged. The thing that swung me exchanging it though was seeing how you wont be repairing it yourself, it's so poorly designed. I mean in the past if I've dropped a phone, I go to ebay, buy the parts and repair it myself, you cannot do that with the One. On top of that the One gets so hot, it's like one big heat sink, it makes playing games so uncomfortable.
So I've put the One away waiting for it to be exchanged and went back to my Nokia. Plastic is so much nicer, it has more grip, it keeps the heat in one location so you can just not hold it there, it doesn't scuff or scratch like a *****. I've looked at the GS4 teardown and the plastic rim is easy to take off and replace and so is the back cover obviously. I can not worry about dropping it or scratching it or the condition of my battery sitting in a heatsink sandwich like on the One. I can just easily replace all that stuff if I do damage it.
For me plastic is the better material by far and I don't see it as a down side. I'm getting bored of every review saying how the One is better and all they mention is the design. I've got one, it isn't well designed, it isn't even well made, I've got giant gaps between the glued on speaker grills and the plastic on the phone.
I just don't get it, but whatever!
Along the same lines of design complaints, I love how many ppl diss the design saying it looks exactly like the S3 and there isn't anything special about it. So why don't ppl say the same thing about the iphone that has only seen 1 true design change in 6 years? Not hating on Apple, I just don't see what all the fuss is about the S4 design being "dull" when other major phones don't change as drastically either.

Ttoally agree
I could understand if the aluminum vs plastic debate was made into the subset, lesser point of contention that it is. But multiple reviews, mainly from American websites, have put it front and center as one of the biggest issues and one of the most important if not THE most important distinction between the phones. Like, seriously? Most of these reviews skim over features, barely juggle the cameras, and no real mention of Mobeam. So they insert the classic filler argument to get page views, and no new information is shown, and no real analysis done.
The only thing "cheap" going on here is the reporting. If you're reviewing a unit and you have limited access to the phone and can't do a proper review, just say so. Don't take up paragraphs to explain this "war" that few people really care about whatsoever, and especially don't make up 1/3 the problems with the phone as "it doesn't feel premium"; there's far more concerning issues to list besides that.
And it's not like cases are rare among mainstream buyers: https://www.npd.com/wps/portal/npd/us/news/press-releases/pr_120821/
Custom cases, skins, and other phone accessories make up a multi-billion dollar industry in of itself. The idea that "naked phones" are the standard and everyone should adhere to it is asinine. I would rather put a real kick ass Breaking Bad print on the back cover of my Galaxy S4 then use the generic black mist for instance.
Due to all the hype, I went out the other day to check out the HTC One and I was honestly underwhelmed. Premium feel? I don't think so. Maybe I'm weird but the One actually kind of felt like plastic to me, LOL~ The aluminum isn't even very solid and dense and it felt only a bit more thicker than my can of Rockstar I drink every day. If HTC were gonna do aluminum, they should've at least used higher quality aluminum like the one on the iPhone 5. At least the iPhone 5 does feel a bit premium. I appreciate aluminum for my car's suspension parts but don't care for it on my phone.
Sure the HTC One looks premium but I would feel bad covering up that "premium" look with a case. But if I don't put it in a case, I'll feel even worse when it gets scratched. If any dust gets under you case, its going to slaughter the aluminum finish on the One.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Because people are dumb.
Most of my previous phones were aluminum and *solid*... That's no indication of durability as screen breaks and dents are still commonplace with metal phones. Removable battery, cooler to hold, lighter, less prone to visible scratches etc.
A vast majority of smartphone users put there phones in hideous cases anyway so the entire *premium feel* argument is fluff.
Bottom line something feeling more dense doesn't means is better quality. Just pure subjective nonsense.
If htc, sony, and apple fanboys dont bash the design, what else they have to bring down samsung? No nothing, samsung is way beyond all of them in rest of the departments.

Every time someone uses a car metaphor, it's almost always complete rubbish. Aside from the fact that it's the paint you're scratching on the car, even if it were all aluminum, the "fix" doesn't carry over to a phone. You going to use chemical treatment/sanding on your phone to help with those scratches? The alternative is you send it back for a replacement (and warranties normally don't cover tiny scratches on the phone), or cover up the scratches with a case/skin (and then what's the point?).

It's just way too hard for some of them to accept that in some circles the One is being touted as the better phone.
What the SGS 4 wins at, it's a fractional win. What the One wins at, it's almost a night and day difference. IE: Speaker quality, call quality, audio capturing capability & design. And no amount of crying is going to change that.

Yeah, HTC is breaking ground with those 2 million units. Samsung's shipping it's next 10 million batch soon I believe, after several carriers sold out of pre-orders. Keep telling yourself the speakers and aluminum design are all you need to have a good phone while the rest of us enjoy the aspects that "don't matter" like camera resolution, sensors, good software features, expandable memory, removable battery, screen size, headphone quality, Mobeam tech, and better hardware all around.
But you can record some really fly videos at the Slipknot concert, so there's that.

Competition is good. And if Samsung put together a product I liked I would buy it.

There are two reasons why a member comes to a forum
1. He is somewhat interested in the phone of that forum ( I never visited the HTC one v forum for example cause I'm not interested in it)
2. Cause he/she wants to troll ( I wouldn't troll at a One V forum cause it doesn't compare with the S4 for example)
One of these 2 reasons brought you here, either you are secretly in love with the S4 or you're a troll which means you fear the S4.

Lol this isn't an armed conflict. I would hate to some of you guys in a real tense situation. Honestly if someone has made their decision do you really think what you just said matters? The reason I didn't go s4 because I have the note 10.1 and I just don't care for it or touchwiz. But I still follow what samsung does because THEY do matter.
Competition is good. And if Samsung put together a product I liked I would buy it.
The fanboyism in all the forums is just comical.

It is. But i m curious to know why you quoted this user post and not the one that got quoted cause he kinda was the fan or troll. After all this is a Samsung forum so obviously most folks here are pro Samsung. By any means if folks want to bash Samsung, do it in your forum ( not you in particular but in general). If you do it here, you can be certain there will be replies.

I don't care to change his mind, really. Just pulling up the facts; you can nip at the heel all you want but competition usually implies near-equal standing, and last I checked, there's a 157 billion dollar difference between the two companies, and one is posting poor results this quarter while the other is gaining. You're right, you fanboys are pretty comical.

Dude you were all OVER the one forums. And it's not trolling if people are respectful. And really with all due respect I'll quote who I quote.
I've worked with Samsung devs. I've taught more than a few members how to theme over here. So I've earned my opinion. The fanboyism on the one and the s4 is out of control.

Yes. You know why? Cause I like the One. Have you seen me bashing the One? No. Everyone that knows me Here knows that I plan to buy it at some point but I happen to prefer the S4.
You can quote whoever you want of course but you don't seem as unbiased as you make it sound, that's my point.

Pet Peev, phone who abuse high end phones

I always put and screen protector and a dual layer case on my phones
Idea is its the 99% mint when its 2 years later, and thus and good phone to sell or to pass onto and family member who does not need cutting edge tech
so when I see people in the pub/bar/work etc
put their phone face down on a table, say with salt on it and when they get a notification the slide it face down toward the edge of the table to get it over the salt
and they ***** that its not scratch proof when it starts looking bad.
you all know these people, they have a 1 month old S4/HTC One/iP5 and it looks 3 years old.
makes me want to take it off them and give them a 10 year old Nokia brick cause its all they deserve.
anyone else have this gripe ?
No one else ?

It usually doesn't bother me unless they say it's the phone's fault. Then I'll defend the phone. As long as they realize how they are treating the phone I couldn't care less. It's their money and phone so they can do what they want. So... option 3?
I find you don't always need a screen protector. I never use them and never get scratches. However my friend always manages to get scratches on his top of the line screens. I know he's clumsy but I don't get what things he must be doing to scratch gorilla glass 3 :-/
Well, their money, their phone, the decide what to do with it.
I know what you mean though, and regarding my own device, I always have a cover and a screen protector on it. It does add a little bulk and it almost hides the original design of the device, but I'm willing to sacrifice that in order to protect my (expensive) device. It also means that I can be a little les gentle with it than I otherwise would, since the cover will absorb most of the bumps. I don't slide it over salt though
I don't care enough about people to care what they do with their phones. It's not my phone they're ruining, and the only one whose money is wasted is their. I just laugh at them.

I wan't to cry and than kill people who treat mobile devices, PS's, laptops like thay paid it 5$...I have seen all sorts of things (I'm servicing tech).
Why that bothers me? Because, people treat gedgets like baby treath her toy, and when thay broke it, thay panick and get angry.
I live with one persion like that...It's hard to watch, every day, believe me
Why do you care what other people do with there stuff?

Still not as bad as seeing a blonde 45 year old woman crawl along the motorway at 80kph in a brand new Porche, only for her to later spend half an hour attempting to park it in a spot three cars wide. And fail.
That's far more painful to watch.

I am right there with you. I agree 100%
Meh. I dislike screen protectors as they always slightly detract from the vividness of colors. I do use case now but I've never had an issue keeping phones in good condition with no case or screen protector while putting them in an empty pocket.

Ehh, i don't really have any gripes about people and their phones. Like, the rest I agree that it's their money and if they're stupid enough to not take good care of it, then they can spend more on getting a new one. Yay for the economy.
I take care of my phone and if someone asks me how come my phone looks so great compared to theirs, I say "hmm I don't know. I try to take care of my phone".

Agreed. My uncle did that with his work issued iPhone 4s. Plus he never cleaned the screen. His phone was always dirty!
2 weeks ago he told me he was getting the new iPhone. I told him to demand a case and luckily he got an otterbox defender...

The thing that really confuses me is how the phone operates. Employees only pay $10 a month for the phone. But the entire phone is locked down. You can't install any applications. The only thing you can do is use the web browser, send and receive email, text messaging, and take pictures.

our company, and its a fortune 500 does not lock down the iPhones.
It's not my place to tell others how they should spend their money or treat their property, but I don't get why so many people will spend hundreds of dollars on a fragile piece of electronics and not protect it with so much as a screen protector or TPU case, let alone something like an Otterbox or Incipio. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and a few bucks in protection can save a hundred or two in a new screen or insurance replacement.

To everyone waiting impatiently...

That last drop made my heart sink
Why??????
the last drop was basically 10 feet directly on its face.

As I posted on Youtube:
These "drop test vids" are making me sick. Wanna know why? It´s not the money - and hell, it´s not that "someone would be sooo happy to have one!!1111"
BUT: These Devices contain a LOT of rare earth elements. They contain a LOT of ecologically harmful elements, and hell, plastic is the most harmless of them. Many people in the southeast worked hard to assamble the device.
And what for? Just to be dropped on concrete - and to be uploaded on YT. Again and Again. Thats just Bulls.
What makes me sick is the fact of a bunch of people is waiting to have one and they are destructing the phones
I know that they do for a reason but still.....I can't get one to treat with care and they just smashed one....Life is not fair :cyclops:
Not to mention these tests are useless. You drop any device with a full glass front and chances are it's going to break. It's really just luck if it doesn't.
The only ones who BENEFIT from a stupid drop test, is the manufacturer. They LOVE to see people make youtube videos dropping
their devices. FREE money (unless the manufacturer gave it to them).
I do not care for "drop test" videos, because anyone with HALF A BRAIN knows that if you drop a piece of equipment, that has
ELECTRONICS inside, chances are you actually might damage it! :silly:
How silly.
Look mom, gravity!

I wouldn't trust drop tests all that much, as they are pretty much 100% luck based.
Here is another one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCX3qNtzGzI in which the camera lens survived what seems to be a near direct drop on the camera area on phone's back.
