Hello!
I'm thinking about buying a TF101 32GB (incl. the keyboard thingy) from a good friend of mine for 1200 SEK (~€140)
The tablet is 1 and a half years old, but he has barely used it.
Everything is completely stock, no root, nothing.
Do you think I should go for it or leave it? Please, motivate your answers
Or should I just get another tablet? I don't want to spend more than 1300 SEK (~€150)
I'd mostly use it for:
- movies/tv shows
- taking notes in class
- perhaps a bit of gaming occasionally
- just messing around on the interwebz
Need advice ASAP!
Thanks!
Bumpedebump...
Worth it !

Worth it!!!
If you are willing to spend around 150 € you will hardly find any better tablet for the money. You just need to be sure that tablet isn't defected in any way.
In my opinion the Transformer tablets are really great because on the keyboard (fast typing and longer battery life (the dock has battery in it)). The only bad thing I have found about ASUS' tablets is that they don't come with odin flasher. Odin is great to unbrick and factory reset phones or tablets. But I guess that it is exclusive only for Samsung devices (I don't know if for all but my Samsung Galaxy S supports it).
Go for the deal if the tablet is not defected!
There's a lot of resources here to help you root your tablet and flash roms, etc. I recommend EOS 4 and the Kat kernel
Go to your friend and tell him to let you take a look on it. Check every side of the tablet AND the keyboard to not have any defect. Turn it on and test the touchscreen. I recommend to download a free game and a free drawing app to test the touchscreen, and maybe a touch screen test app if it does exist. €140 is worth it if the screen is not cracked, the charger and the usb cable does work and if the touchscreen & keyboard does work without any problems, it is worth it. Ask him questions like "Was the screen or the case cracked?" Or "Did it have any defect and you sent it to repair?". If he does say that he messed up his system some time ago, it isn't really a problem as soon as it is working now.
Again, make sure you ask him about any cracks, defects, issues, repairs, screen scratches, quarranty, screen replacement and everything else and put them in a balance to be sure if it is worth it. I mean.. Don't ignore a cracked screen or a defect, the repair could cost as much as he sells his tablet, and you will just double the price plus you have to waste time with the repairs.
I am writing right now from a TF101, and I have to say that it's working like a charm. It fell down three times: on an iron bench, on the street and on my kitchen's floor and all it has got is some scratches that can almost not be seen, and the alluminium case has a 0.4cm scratch and it got a small curve, but I have to just buy a screen protector and a protector case to make sure next time I won't get it broken. After all these times it fell down on the floor, it works like a charm and without any issues! I paid €400 JUST for the tablet, and you are paying €140 on the tablet plus the keyboard, which will have a touchpad and a keyboard. As the others said: if no defect, GO FOR THE DEAL!

So, I've just received my third Infinity, after having to send the first two back because of defects with the screen. The first had a large speck of dust trapped right under the centre of the screen, and the screen on the second gave everything a horrible yellow tinge.
The one I've just received has what looks like a perfect screen image wise, but there's a horrible clicking sound when I press along the right hand edge - so, it appears that this infinity also has a fault, which I know from reading these forums is fairly common.
I'm really starting to loose heart with this tablet - it's my first one, and as much as I want to love it, I'm sick of receiving defective units. If I return this one, then I'm going to be running the risk of receiving another with a dodgy screen or worse.
If I decide to keep this one, what are the chances of the clicking/unbonded screen becoming worse? Can anyone who's had this problem comment on whether the area that clicks has expanded over time, or if your screen has started to separate noticeably? Is this likely to happen?
I've bought through Amazon so I'm able to return it without any hassle, but I'm reluctant to go through the ASUS quality control lottery for a fourth time.
I would appreciate any advice or comments.
Mine is 2 months old and i had the clicking issue from the beginning but it didn't got worse and to be honest i don't even notice the clicks anymore (i guess that my brain got used to it ).

Ok, thanks mate... hopefully it won't get any worse. I'll give it a week or two and see if mine spreads at all.

Send it back - that's not acceptable for a highend electronic product. You keep doin this until you get one with accaptable build quality or you buy another brand. Choice is yours. But never accept poor build quality in high end consumer electronics
Had mine for about 3 weeks and received a screen protector a couple of days ago, no problems with the screen but was worried applying the screen protector would show up any defects clickingwise. Panic over screen protector on and display is looking good.
Yeah, I think too many people here accept the fact that their unit has some fault and then just think "well, it could be worse. Be happy with what you got". No way! this should be THE high end tablet, one of the most expensive ones there are and then it has this kind of faults.
IF everybody would be same and think "well this is ok" then Asus wouldn't even learn from their mistakes. They would just keep on with the crappy QC and nothing would be fixed. Maybe they would even worsen the qc to save money and try to find out where is the line that people don't accept the product.
For me, I spend a lot of money and I want my unit be perfect out of the package. It is other issue then if I break it..
I too am having some screen issues, but I think I will have to send my unit back to ASUS completely. Most Dutch retailers only have a very short return period, and I've already had mine for 19 days. I guess I will contact the retailer and ask them what I should do. However, it is really unacceptable that you pay a high price for such a premium product and that it has issues that really should not ocur. The reason why I didn't go back to the retailer was because I didn't really notice it at first, it just got more annoying later on...

Mine has the loose screen issue all around. But no clicking. So I'm having the same debate in my mind. I think I'm going to return and try for another one.

I'm returning my 2nd TF700t tomorrow 'cause of loose screen. This time it also made the clicking sound :/
Mine has a loose screen but it's the lower left hand corner by the headphone jack, hdmi port, microphone area. You don't even need to squeeze it hard, it feels hollow in that area and it makes a crunching sound. My biggest fear is the ports there are either going to get damaged or cause a short touching the case. Amazon is sending me a replacement which I should have tomorrow.
Amazon was really gracious in taking my 201 back that I bought in May, but man, WTF, I love Tegra games so the samsung tab is out and I hate Samsung with their wishy washy update and the fact they stop supporting their legacy products fairly fast.
If this next one is trash I don't know what to do, I don't want to be banned by Amazon for returns, sucks ass.
Thanks for all the replies and comments - it seems that this loose/unbonded screen issue is more widespread than I first thought...
All those who have said that I shouldn't accept this on a premium device are, of course, correct. Although the tablet seems to work properly now, I'm worried that several months down the line the screen might start to separate or some other related problem will arise, & I'll be left to deal with Asus direct for a warranty repair. It makes far more sense to get it replaced now, so I'm just about to contact Amazon to tell them that this tablet, the third one that they have sent me, is also faulty.
Here's hoping my fourth will be fault free as it'll be the last one I get - if there's a problem with it then it'll be returned for a refund & I'll start to look at other brands of tablets to buy instead.

If you check out the Nexus 7 forum (also an ASUS tablet) you can gleam some interesting information about the screen separation issues. It's not as easy to take the Infinity apart, so fixes aren't readily available, but I'm sure the issues are related.
I wonder if the glass and digitizer on this tablet are stuck down by something similar to double sided foam tape.
Might be a contact film type adhesive too.
My experience with these type of sticky adhesives is that sometimes a little warmth or just over time they will adhere better.
I did have a slight clicking on the bottom of my tablet, it's not there now.
Just some thoughts.

From the ASUS Nexus 7 forums I understand that the loose screen/screen separation may be due to adhesion issues that can be somewhat or completely solved by gentle heat followed by light, consistent pressure. Someone did try that with his Infinity with limited results but I think his frame may not have fit properly as well. The crunching sound some have reported may be due to a really crunchy type of tape used to hold down the battery, if there's any excess flex that causes the screen/digitizer to touch the tape. There was also a screen lift/light bleed issue caused by over-tightened screws in the frame holding the motherboard, etc together. That was user fixable, by just loosening the screws and making sure that they were all fairly evenly tightened. That also really helped with the light bleed issues too.
I received my replacement from Amazon, this one is all good, it even has the cooler color screen I like compared to original, sweet!
I have just sent back my second tablet to amazon after receiving the first one with nearly jammed in buttons and a clicking screen. The second one I got had a little clicking to start and then got progressively worse until I chose to return it. Amazon emailed me and said that they are just going to refund me my money instead of sending out another one with probably similar problems... don't really know what to do now... any other good tablets coming out? Haha

The way these tablets are held together is via a longer L shaped plastic edge on the faceplate that mates top edge first to a the ledge built into the backshell. Once inserted under the shell at the top edge the rest of the screen can lay down into the rest of the backshell. There are smaller L shaped clips up and down the outsides which click into place via finger pressure. The bottom edge is secured by two metal slide locks which mount the front to the back much like an old style door chain where the round part fits into a large hole and then slides into a narrower opening to latch it into place.
The point of this post? if the sides or top seem loose you can probably click them together with finger pressure. if the bottom is loose the latch got locked without the round part in place. for this you should return if you have warranty left. If it crunches they probably broke an L shaped clip while assembling.
I received my 2nd Infinity today and I immediately noticed the screen on the bottom left hand corner is above the frame and the rest of the bottom part of the screen flexes when I hold it normally. I'm sending it back. I'll give the Infinity one more chance and hope I get a good one. If not, I'll have to look at other options. At some point enough is enough.
My advice for anyone that has build quality issues with their Infinity is to return it. That is a lot of money to spend to keep a tablet that could break down the line. I wouldn't take any chances, but that's just me.
Seriously though, does anyone know of any other top end tabs coming out soon? I'm tired of dealing with sh*t quality

Hi everybody,
today ain't a good day for me.
My phone just smashed accidentally onto the road, after it had slipped from my hands. I was on the second floor (about 6 meter).
SBAM.
The impact was terrible, as you can see in the photos.
The "SAMSUNG" sign was completely turned into smithereens, and the fragments of glass were arrived up to the mainboard.
Despite that, I am trying to repair it.
I have just disassembled the entire device and I am planning to buy the front panel (+ lcd).
The question is: how can I know if the device still works ? Any idea?
What would you suggest?
I suggest you save money for a new phone..
You post make me sad
I don't believe, that you will find somebody that would be brave to check if this stuff still work. As you have on above post, the cheaper will be to buy new one... :fingers-crossed:
thank you all.
ARGH...I know, it's a pity, this wasn't supposed to happen
I'll save money for a new phone, yeah. I believe I don't have other choises (buying a new lcd is too expensive).
Thank you again, fellows!
well damn......that makes me sad and I have to say i dropped mine a lot of times,i have even trown it when i was angry but i can say that a few side scratches and back case scratched is all that's on it...lucky I used my momax case i guess.still i don't recommend it if you guys want to keep your back phone case free of scratches
i think is cheaper to buy a new smartphone than to repair and/or replace the screen
so sad:crying:

the screen will cost quite abit if im not mistaken. not worth the trouble as well. just get a new phone
Also, are you sure that the screen is the only thing that's broken? A drop from that height is more than enough to break the motherboard.

90 dollar for a replacement screen. But I guess that's just the front glass, you also broke the back.
Ye, a galaxy nexus seems fine, or maybe a motorola defy+ if you want something cheaper, it's just 200 now, almost the same specs as the galaxy s and it's meant for heavy use as you still see the screws...Seeing the damage you can cause, it's probably fit for you.
So I had a TF700 a few weeks ago and it was awesome. I was just worried about the “screeb cracking, other issues".
I got the Nexus 7 and its just too small for school. I want something HD for blu rays, school, etc.
I want to sell my Nexus 7 and get a TF700 again.
Is there anyway to protect it to not have the screen crack? I've heard the keyboard dock causes it and that worries me cause I want to get the dock.
I'll be buying from Best Buy if so. They seem to have good return policies.
Thanks in advance
Get the TF700 again and don't worry about the screen cracking... The number of people that have/had cracked screens is *very* minimal. I leave my TF700 docked 95% of the time and use it all day, every day without worrying about it and it's fine.
If you are really worried, get a Best Buy accidental coverage warranty - or better yet, a SquareTrade warranty (it's a lot cheaper)...
Relax and enjoy the TF700!

I think it is a combination of some production faults and how you open it. I always put it upright (closed end down) and pull both parts slowly apart in the middle and not at the corners like some do. Pulling at the corners causes unusual strain on the glass, increasing the chance it might crack. Also handling it gently, like it was a laptop, and not like a book/phone you can throw around, will decrease the chance it will damage. Oh, and get a sleeve/case/protective cover to transport it around.
I haven't posted in a while but am rather frustrated with the quality control on the 10.1's I've encountered.
The first one I bought the screen was totally glitched out. Couldn't even initiate the start up screen.
I returned the lemon and got second one about 2 and a half months ago. It's been perfect....until tonight. I have never really used the S PEN until as of late but it's fantastic so I've obviously been using it more and more. I've noticed a 1 inch bar deadspot while using the S PEN. Place your Note landscape and it's about 3 inches from the left side and this 1 inch bar goes from the top of the screen to the bottom (when in Landscape). Over that region I described, the S PEN WILL NOT work. It works fine as a touch screen, just not with the S PEN. I've rebooted, turned it on and off, tried it on different applications, even took the case off in case the magnetized case was causing it, etc. I'm running a rooted stock 4.1.2 JB rom.
Luckily I purchased it from Costco and my 90 days is up the 2nd week of May.
This thing is definitely going back soon, but, how can I justify buying another one when I've gotten two defective ones??
I'm not sure what else is out there on the Android tablet front, but I think I'll be in the market soon.
Could just be a bad batch the store got. If there was a problem with their shipment then thats just bad luck for the consumer, besides, everyone knows that third times the charm....
And it really is worth trying again for, no other android tablet has the spen which is a really good little thing to have....
It's not inside a case containing magnets is it? Some of these can interfere with the digitiser
Beacause you are using it while charging.

Maxx DE here.
So im an idiot and had a few too many and dropped my phone real hard on the sidewalk and cracked the screen. Its my fault, she went down hard and now had a few small cracks thru the screen. Normally I wouldnt mind, as they are not too noticable, but it seems to have split right through the capacitive buttons down at the bottom of the phone. This is now causing issues with those buttons functioning properly.
I have successfully disabled them and gotten the phone working with on screen nav buttons, but i am still seeing slight issues with the performance of the screen. Mainly i believe because even though the buttons now do not control anything, the phone still can see they are being touched. (my symptoms are the screen will not timeout sometimes, as well as increased battery drain i think from the registering of all the button presses from the crack). Otherwise the screen works fine.
I have been reading up on a few options. Moto wants 200 buckos to repair the phone. I have found the lens/overlay for the screen/digitizer but i have been watching youtubes, and it seems pretty difficult to properly remove the LOCA glue and reapply the new lens, especially for someone who has never repaired a phone before.
So my question to you guys is, has anyone ever just repaired the lens/overlay and had successes? Should i just pony up the 200 and have Moto fix my phone? Are there any reputable repair shops in NYC that members have used (I hear a lot of horror stories about these screen repair places and am hesitant about just trying one out)?
Thanks!
I would send to Moto. Little cash no more worrying about it, don't have ship around for days, don't have to ask a lot of ?, and I know it was done right with original parts not some knock off our quality no name parts. But that's me, my sanity and time is worth the money to me.

Ya, thats what i have been leaning towards more and more, as i research and look at parts. Seems the safe way for self-repair is to buy the whole front LCD+Glass assembly, which in that case is like 20 bucks cheaper.
It just seems redic to me that asurion does not cover developer editions which is crazy since i have been paying for that insurance for the past year. It would have been nice of them to tell me that my phone wasnt covered when i activated it.
Yeah no kidding. If was paying for the insurance on a phone that wasn't covered I would throw a fit to get refunded. That's like getting a car loan only to find out it's not for your car.

Yeah, i was thinking that, but for $20 more I will prob just send it to moto for piece of mind that the repair will be done right and backed by them.
