I finally got my Eee Pad from NewEgg, and I was generally pretty happy with it for the week I've had it so far. Just this morning though, I bumped into my door while holding it and the power button got swiped. Now there's a visible dent in the area around the button, and the power button itself appears to be broke. When I press it down, there's no longer the "click" that you would expect when you press the button. And of course, it no longer turns on.
Needless to say, I'm pretty irate right now. I didn't really bump into the door hard at all, and I would consider this damage to be normal wear and tear. Can anybody recommend a course of action here? Should I attempt to repair it myself, or should I just go ahead and RMA it right now? Even though NewEgg says they have a replacement only policy for the Eee Pad, the rep I talked to said if they don't have any in stock at the time the RMA is processed, it'll turn into a refund instead.
wait, so you damaged it and you want to RMA/return it?
How can you RMA for damage you caused yourself?

I don't think you can get a replacement or refund from newegg...but give it a shot. Maybe your transformer is just in the "sleep mode of death" Have you tried to hold the button down for more than 10 seconds, wait a minute, then hold the power down again for 5 seconds to turn it back on?
No offence but thats not normal wear and tear, that's accidental/negligence. Not covered under any warranty, unless you took out accidental cover (insurance) when you purchased it.
You physically damaged it. I don't see why you feel entitled to a replacement.
If you have no moral issues with trying to return it or get it replaced then by all means try ans maybe you'll get one.
You're not entitled to one though and the fact that you think you are is comical.

@csmail, no I don't think I'm entitled to get it replaced/refunded. And I don't think it's a question of morals here. If NewEgg accepts it, then great! If not, oh well. Now if I went back to NewEgg and protested the rejection, then that would be ethically questionable. At least in my mind. I'm really at the mercy of NewEgg here. I can only cross my fingers.
I still, however, think this is normal wear and tear. It wasn't a bad brush against the door at all, and it's really something that would've happened eventually unless I babied it constantly.
Looking back to the commercial ASUS released where they had the guy out and about town with the Eee Pad, where he's in class taking notes with it, then he's outside with his friends where he callously undocks the Eee Pad to show his friends something, then he's at the coffee shop with his girlfriend playing a head-to-head video game with both of them banging away on it, and then he's at the skateboard park taking pics with it I'm now thinking "yeah right!". With that kind of treatment, his Eee Pad would be dead in a week.
Apparently, the only place this thing should be used is within the safe confines of your home held only by edges and placed softly on a pillow in a quiet secluded room when not in use. I'm not particularly rough with my gadgets. But devices such as these are meant to be *used*, not put in a glass case to be displayed. And it's supposed to double as a netbook? Yea, good luck with that.
I used a Samsung Galaxy Tab before this, and compared to the Eee Pad, that thing is built like a tank. It's still going strong.
Now with that rant out of the way, I was generally pleased with the Eee Pad. The IPS display was simply awesome. Battery life was also great. There were some software quirks, but I noticed ASUS has a FW update available which I was about to install sometime during the next few days. But I guess that's out now. If NewEgg has mercy on me, I'm on the fence on whether or not to get a replacement or wait until the new Galaxy Tabs come out.
You are trying to justify returning a damaged device by saying it would have happened anyway unless you babied it. I'm not sure about other people but I baby all my gadgets and that's why they never get damaged like this. I'm not saying it would never happen to me because accidents do happen from time to time just like it did to you, but no accidents yet (knock on wood). From a moral standpoint, if you think you can get away with it and it doesn't bother you then maybe you'll get lucky and they will accept it. But for the record, no matter how many times you tell yourself its normal wear and tear banging something up against a door... its not.

I think you are on the hook for this, so your options are send it into Asus for repair or repair it yourself knowing this likely voids your warranty.

No I don't think NewEgg should give me my money back/give me a replacement because of a damage that I think would've happened eventually. The ball is entirely in their court and I will live with whatever decision they make. It'd be stupid not to try though. There is nothing ethically questionable about this unless I was being deceitful, which I am not.

I guess thats where you and I differ. It wasn't like I was using my Eee Pad as a door stop while not in use or something. It was a casual bump against a soft wooden door. It wasn't even a head-on collision. It was a swipe against the door. I am on order of magnitude way rougher with my cell phone, the aforementioned Galaxy Tab, and my laptop and they are all chugging away like the day I bought them.
I guess the original point of my post was to rant about the build quality of these Eee Pads. I buy these things to be tools, not to have to show off how much money I have. I wanted to be able to throw this thing into my bag when I go on travel or out into the field like I can with my Galaxy Tab. Turns it out it's way too fragile for that. It can't even take a casual bump. People reading this thread and considering an Eee Pad may want to take notice if durability is a requirement.

You should try the XOOM instead. I miss its metal housing and overall superior stability. But it doesn't have the dock, IPS screen or the very useful ASUS software. I am selling mine on eBay right now but it was a very tough decision!

OP, if you used your AMEX when you ordered this, you can get your money back thru AMEX.

Not saying you were being neglectful or anything, and yes it would be ideal for it to survive a brush with a hard surface. As I said before, if newegg takes it back, more power to you. however, just because you had a bad experience with it don't deem the build quality to be crap. I am happy with mine Having said that, as a former xoom owner I would say that the xoom would have come out of this unscathed most likely (not must because the power button is on the back either). The xoom was just a little more solid feeling, but it had it's drawbacks as well which I won't get into. In any case I hope it works out for you and you can remain a transformer owner. Also if you didn't already might I suggest purchasing the asus sleeve, it have been just enough protection to save you.

Yes. Unless they changed it recently.
Personally I think this thread was started by a troll since it's their second ever posting on a flame worthy subject. But for the record, Newegg is obviously not responsible for someone damaging their own device so asking them to eat $400 because someone was careless seems rather deplorable.
The answer is pay to get it fixed or fix it yourself.
As far as not being deceitful I would agree with you if you submitted an RMA request that said "Banged Device Against Door and Broke It". You did not do that because it would be declined so you lied. You're not betting on their mercy, you're betting on them being too busy to notice that you trashed it.
Anyway, I like Newegg. They have great customer service, reasonable prices and cater to the geeks among us. It's a shame when people lie and cheat to get game a system that once broken leaves us in the hands of Best Buy and Amazon.
There's a reason most of us use cases or put silicon skins on our fancy little devices when out in the wild, they are fragile. I don't see anything about the build quality of the Transformer to make me think it is more or less so true for this device.

Well, you are certainly entitled to your opinion. But I can assure you I am not trolling.
The good news is I just managed to fix it myself just now. Turns out the bump caused the power button to get stuck. I took a dulled box cutter and pried the back lid open just a little to unstick it. Now the button clicks when pressed like it should and everything works as before.
So that this thread isn't a total waste of time, I'll just say that people need to know that this thing doesn't have the greatest of build qualities. Especially since it can convert into a netbook, the Eee Pad really needs to be more rugged. Even when in netbook mode, the buttons and so forth are still vunerable and if I treated it the same way I treat my laptop, I'd have a $400 ($550 including the dock) paper weight in no time.

I had to talk to a customer rep to get an RMA number for the Eee Pad. It's not my fault she didn't ask for specifics. Furthermore, I would presume they inspect the merchandise before proceeding with the RMA at which point they would
clearly be able to see the damage on the power button. How can I possibly be still at fault if they decided to still proceed with the RMA?

Great! Know where we can get one for the Eee Pad? I got the official $40 ASUS sleeve for it from NewEgg, but as you can probably conclude by now that didn't do squat as far as protecting anything. And not those sleeves where you have to take the tablet out of it to use it. That hurts usability if you're trying to use your tablet like a digital book or something.
To all you "moral guys". Has anyone who has posted here bought a device, rooted it, restored it then returned it?
So, I've just received my third Infinity, after having to send the first two back because of defects with the screen. The first had a large speck of dust trapped right under the centre of the screen, and the screen on the second gave everything a horrible yellow tinge.
The one I've just received has what looks like a perfect screen image wise, but there's a horrible clicking sound when I press along the right hand edge - so, it appears that this infinity also has a fault, which I know from reading these forums is fairly common.
I'm really starting to loose heart with this tablet - it's my first one, and as much as I want to love it, I'm sick of receiving defective units. If I return this one, then I'm going to be running the risk of receiving another with a dodgy screen or worse.
If I decide to keep this one, what are the chances of the clicking/unbonded screen becoming worse? Can anyone who's had this problem comment on whether the area that clicks has expanded over time, or if your screen has started to separate noticeably? Is this likely to happen?
I've bought through Amazon so I'm able to return it without any hassle, but I'm reluctant to go through the ASUS quality control lottery for a fourth time.
I would appreciate any advice or comments.
Mine is 2 months old and i had the clicking issue from the beginning but it didn't got worse and to be honest i don't even notice the clicks anymore (i guess that my brain got used to it ).

Send it back - that's not acceptable for a highend electronic product. You keep doin this until you get one with accaptable build quality or you buy another brand. Choice is yours. But never accept poor build quality in high end consumer electronics
Had mine for about 3 weeks and received a screen protector a couple of days ago, no problems with the screen but was worried applying the screen protector would show up any defects clickingwise. Panic over screen protector on and display is looking good.
Yeah, I think too many people here accept the fact that their unit has some fault and then just think "well, it could be worse. Be happy with what you got". No way! this should be THE high end tablet, one of the most expensive ones there are and then it has this kind of faults.
IF everybody would be same and think "well this is ok" then Asus wouldn't even learn from their mistakes. They would just keep on with the crappy QC and nothing would be fixed. Maybe they would even worsen the qc to save money and try to find out where is the line that people don't accept the product.
For me, I spend a lot of money and I want my unit be perfect out of the package. It is other issue then if I break it..
I too am having some screen issues, but I think I will have to send my unit back to ASUS completely. Most Dutch retailers only have a very short return period, and I've already had mine for 19 days. I guess I will contact the retailer and ask them what I should do. However, it is really unacceptable that you pay a high price for such a premium product and that it has issues that really should not ocur. The reason why I didn't go back to the retailer was because I didn't really notice it at first, it just got more annoying later on...

I'm returning my 2nd TF700t tomorrow 'cause of loose screen. This time it also made the clicking sound :/
Mine has a loose screen but it's the lower left hand corner by the headphone jack, hdmi port, microphone area. You don't even need to squeeze it hard, it feels hollow in that area and it makes a crunching sound. My biggest fear is the ports there are either going to get damaged or cause a short touching the case. Amazon is sending me a replacement which I should have tomorrow.
Amazon was really gracious in taking my 201 back that I bought in May, but man, WTF, I love Tegra games so the samsung tab is out and I hate Samsung with their wishy washy update and the fact they stop supporting their legacy products fairly fast.
If this next one is trash I don't know what to do, I don't want to be banned by Amazon for returns, sucks ass.
Thanks for all the replies and comments - it seems that this loose/unbonded screen issue is more widespread than I first thought...
All those who have said that I shouldn't accept this on a premium device are, of course, correct. Although the tablet seems to work properly now, I'm worried that several months down the line the screen might start to separate or some other related problem will arise, & I'll be left to deal with Asus direct for a warranty repair. It makes far more sense to get it replaced now, so I'm just about to contact Amazon to tell them that this tablet, the third one that they have sent me, is also faulty.
Here's hoping my fourth will be fault free as it'll be the last one I get - if there's a problem with it then it'll be returned for a refund & I'll start to look at other brands of tablets to buy instead.

If you check out the Nexus 7 forum (also an ASUS tablet) you can gleam some interesting information about the screen separation issues. It's not as easy to take the Infinity apart, so fixes aren't readily available, but I'm sure the issues are related.
I wonder if the glass and digitizer on this tablet are stuck down by something similar to double sided foam tape.
Might be a contact film type adhesive too.
My experience with these type of sticky adhesives is that sometimes a little warmth or just over time they will adhere better.
I did have a slight clicking on the bottom of my tablet, it's not there now.
Just some thoughts.

From the ASUS Nexus 7 forums I understand that the loose screen/screen separation may be due to adhesion issues that can be somewhat or completely solved by gentle heat followed by light, consistent pressure. Someone did try that with his Infinity with limited results but I think his frame may not have fit properly as well. The crunching sound some have reported may be due to a really crunchy type of tape used to hold down the battery, if there's any excess flex that causes the screen/digitizer to touch the tape. There was also a screen lift/light bleed issue caused by over-tightened screws in the frame holding the motherboard, etc together. That was user fixable, by just loosening the screws and making sure that they were all fairly evenly tightened. That also really helped with the light bleed issues too.
I received my replacement from Amazon, this one is all good, it even has the cooler color screen I like compared to original, sweet!
I have just sent back my second tablet to amazon after receiving the first one with nearly jammed in buttons and a clicking screen. The second one I got had a little clicking to start and then got progressively worse until I chose to return it. Amazon emailed me and said that they are just going to refund me my money instead of sending out another one with probably similar problems... don't really know what to do now... any other good tablets coming out? Haha
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
The way these tablets are held together is via a longer L shaped plastic edge on the faceplate that mates top edge first to a the ledge built into the backshell. Once inserted under the shell at the top edge the rest of the screen can lay down into the rest of the backshell. There are smaller L shaped clips up and down the outsides which click into place via finger pressure. The bottom edge is secured by two metal slide locks which mount the front to the back much like an old style door chain where the round part fits into a large hole and then slides into a narrower opening to latch it into place.
The point of this post? if the sides or top seem loose you can probably click them together with finger pressure. if the bottom is loose the latch got locked without the round part in place. for this you should return if you have warranty left. If it crunches they probably broke an L shaped clip while assembling.
I received my 2nd Infinity today and I immediately noticed the screen on the bottom left hand corner is above the frame and the rest of the bottom part of the screen flexes when I hold it normally. I'm sending it back. I'll give the Infinity one more chance and hope I get a good one. If not, I'll have to look at other options. At some point enough is enough.
My advice for anyone that has build quality issues with their Infinity is to return it. That is a lot of money to spend to keep a tablet that could break down the line. I wouldn't take any chances, but that's just me.
Seriously though, does anyone know of any other top end tabs coming out soon? I'm tired of dealing with sh*t quality

I got it a few days ago. Love the screen and device overall, but Asus really needs to improve its QC (the Nexus 7 has similar issues, and my Asus laptop has some issues as well).
Anyway, I have some light bleeding in the lower left corner, but also on the left side where the screen is detached. Detached in a way that I can push it, it makes a sort of "click" sound, and the light bleeding is worse when I press it.
Do you think I should return it and get another one? I would, but the nearest bestbuy is an hour away AND I keep seeing people in the threads saying that their second one was even worse, etc. I guess it's just luck.

Yes, yes you should return if possible.
I would travel 2 hours if I were not completely satisfied.
My suggestion would be to check out the replacement device *before* you leave the store - with the number of defective TF700's being sold, you don't want to have to drive all of that way only to find another issue when you get home with your replacement! Don't leave the store until you get a good one.
It's a shame, but Asus' QC is just horrible... When you get a good one, you'll be happy though!

Yes, that's what I was thinking too. I'm going to open the box in store and check to see what it's like.
Hey guys,
For the tablet to lock into the dock there are these little plastic things the dock grabs onto in the slots of the tablet. Well first the left one snapped and it could only lock on one side. Now they've both snapped and the tablet slides freely in and out, this isn't much of an issue when I have it on a table but is a prevalent issue we I have it on my lap. I don't know exactly when they snapped, but it's really annoying.
Main question has anyone else experienced this and is this claimable on warranty?
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using XDA Premium HD app
I have the same problem, I think that is something broken in the left part inside the tablet (in my case). I also would like to know if is any way to replace the part.
Thanks
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
I would expect that ASUS would put it to 'user error' or 'wear and tear', so I highly doubt you can claim this under warranty. Also, these parts will be hard to come by, if at all available, so you'll have to hack something together if you can...
EDIT: Sorry for the long post. I can't seem too keep these short for trying, LOL. If it helped you, then it was all worth it.
Only way to know for sure is call Asus warranty support. Stress that the tablet was used in an ordinary fashion, and that this happened during gentle use (whether or not that is entirely accurate. Some of us are a little more heavy handed than others, note that I am not saying either of you are. I used to laugh at the reviews - especially Brandon Miniman's reviews where he gets so flustered docking the tablet they have to stop filming and roll after it's inn the dock. (With the Prime, I think he was the numbskull who forgot to take out the rubber tabs that came in the slots.) It's is why Asus stopped putting those in on the Infinity. They claimed a huge number of support calls with people not being able to dock.
So you can see my comment about some people using these harder that others makes a certain degree of sense. In any event, just say "I always line up the arrow, and Gently press the Tablet into the dock. Then all of a sudden one tab broke... etc.
Unfortunately Asus is going to excercise their option to try and fix it, rather than just cross shipping you a refurbished one or something like that, but it doesn't hurt to ask. You can count on a) a longer wait than would seem appropriate b) Paying one way shipping to Asus (if you really get on their case, and demand a manager and all that you can get it waived, but pick your battles, fighting over $10-20 shipping may not be worth the fight) and c.) Possibly having them claim "customer damage"
Also, when you ship it, at least get proof of delivery tracking for it so you know when it was signed for. A lot of the time, they let packages sit without checking them in for multiple days. I generally watch and when it is signed for I start calling every day until it gets fixed. Thats the battle I picked, YMMV.
Unfortunately that's about your only recourse short of buying a new or used dock to replace it. They ARE reasonably durable, but I wonder if the slight differences of the TF700 fit have caused your tabs to break. It is definitely a tighter fit, and some claimed the lock tab would not spring into place but had to be manually pushed. Mine did for the first week or so, and my TF700 requires more pressure to get the locking tabs to engage.
Finally, do NOT let them tell you the TF201 Dock is not compatible with the TF700 BS.... On the Marketing page it says the TF700 Dock fits both, but TF201 is NOT compatible with TF700. There was several thread on this at release of TF700.
Look at the 2nd Video here:
http://eee.asus.com/en/transformer-infinity/features
"The Next Transformation" at the 3/4 point, they explain all the effort and testing the engineers did to get the Infinity to work with the Primes Dock Tell them to watch their own video and tell you again how they are not compatible.
Good luck guys. Without the Dock, the Infinity is not so infinite. Let us know how you make out on this issue. :cyclops:
Thanks for your detailed help, just in case you read it wrong the dock is fine it's the tablet. When the first one broke I originally thought it was my fault, so I was bit annoyed at myself and tried to be extra careful. Then the second one broke not long after the first so... yea

I have the same problem, I think that is something broken in the left part inside the tablet (in my case). I also would like to know if is any way to replace the part.
Thanks

Yea the left one of mine broke first. When I compared both there was clearly a plastic piece missing.

Just curious - was this the original TF201 dock or the "re-labeled" TF700 dock?
If it was the original TF201 dock, I'm sure they will deny any warranty claim based on the fact that Asus still says it's not compatible with the TF700...
Then again, even if it is the re-labeled TF700 dock, they'd still probably deny warranty coverage anyway! Warranty coverage is definitely not a strong point of Asus, from what I've heard...

It is the re-labeled dock and I have also got an email from an Asus employee confirming that my dock is intended for the TF700

Cool - than I would certainly try to make a warranty claim - it can't hurt. However, you better plan to be without your dock for a few weeks!

Any one have found a video of how to dissasembly the tablet? I been searching with no luck. Also I would like to find the spare part.
Thank you.

Main question has anyone else experienced this and is this claimable on warranty?

Yes, this just happened to me. Left side clip in tab has piece missing. Didnt notice it until I went to use dock again and it wouldnt lock. Looking into getting RMA now. Always had to manually push docking lock to right to get it to lock completely which is probably what fatigued the docking clip. Other than minor abrasions to tab due to not having a case my unit has never been dropped or handled even remotely roughly. Yet again I am dissapointed in the design of this tab.
Sent mine back for rma beasuse ot snapped the plastic pin retainer In the charging port while docking to the tf700 keyboard. Just got a bill saying cid4 €108. Euros to repair and bank transfer payments only to another comapny not asus!
This is the bruno Germany repair centre.
I agree its a design flaw a weakness in a good tablet. I also have a tf300 with dock and that is fine.

Long story short, I bought the Transformer Prime and dock in late June. About a month later I traded the tablet for the Infinity and kept the dock since I read many people stating that it was compatible. First thing I noticed with the Infinity is that it required more force to dock the tablet into the keyboard. I had to push down and slide the lock tab to the right to actually lock the tablet. About a couple weeks ago I noticed that with the tablet docked and the lock tab pushed all the way to the right, I could easily slide the tablet upwards and remove it from the dock without sliding the lock tab to the left first. What this means is that the tablet could easily become undocked, causing it to fall easily if held improperly. The locking mechanism seems to work properly, but I'm not sure if the locking pins have become worn or if the part that the pins connect to inside the tablet have rounded off or something. Has anyone else experienced this problem yet, and if so, what are the possible solutions to fix this? If it's a problem with the dock, I'll probably just end up buying the newer dock ASUS released recently that's stated to be compatible with the Infinity. I've also thought about taking my tablet to Best Buy and seeing if it will dock securely with one of their docks to see if I can rule out the dock. If it's a problem with the tablet itself, I guess I'm SOL. Right now I'm staring at bits of a torn up paper towel, contemplating shoving them into the holes to see if it will temporarily fix the problem, lol.

I'm guessing you have the same problem as me. There are plastic hooks that are on the dock latch and they broke off on mine. I just figured the problem out last week. I'm going to try to send it back soon for warranty.

Yikes. I had this experience too. Mine is still secure though. I hope that doesn't change.

Just wondering, is the dock still covered under warranty if your bootloader is unlocked? I'd like to send my dock to Asus if I find out the latches on it are broken.

I have your exact problem! There is nothing wrong with the locking pins on mine. They're metal and are designed not to be damaged if the tablet is inserted in the locked position. The issue is the locking pins do not line up with the small piece of metal in the locking grooves/holes on the tablet. I can see tiny abrasion marks a few millimetres in front of where they should be at the bottom of my tablet showing that they simply are not lining up.
The issue is with the dock. This should be covered on warranty.
R.e. trying to buy another one - I would warn you that consensus appears to be that the TF700 dock is structurally identical in every way to the TF201 dock. The only difference is the finishing colour which is slightly different and the cost of the TF700 dock which ASUS kindly increased.
My unit came together with a 'TF700' dock and the colours match. And like you it was a very tight fit to start with. I didn't notice the latch problem until last week though (because I actually never tried to remove the tablet with the lock mechanism ON before!).
Thanks dude. Would anyone be kind enough to direct me to Asus's warranty claims department? I can't f find a link to save my life lol.

How did you get on with the warranty repair?
I have opened up a POLL on transformer forums to see how many users have experienced the docking pins in the tablet either rounding off or snapping off completely.
I'd really appreciate if any of you see this message would go there and make a report to have your voice counted.
You can find it here:
http://www.transformerforums.com/fo...ining-pins-snapped-off-poll-you-affected.html
Also, there's another thread that covers this issue (among possible other issues) here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2107044
I've been in contact with ASUS Support in the Netherlands -- they claim it is user-induced damage. I have written a slightly spikier mail, but will have to weigh my legal option if they remain on their stance. A device this expensive should have better build quality.

Did you try ASUS warranty? There is a poll here
... trying to get ASUS to recognise this is a design flaw and not customer induced damage
because
a) The docking tabs in the tablet are PLASTIC
b) There seems to be a tendency for left or right side of tablet to 'catch' in the dock as you remove it and if this occurs just before you release the locking tab---- crack! Locking tab should have hold fast LOCK and UNLOCK positions instead of being spring loaded
I too have this problem. We actually have 2 Infinities and 2 docks. One tablet works fine with both docks, and the other won't stay connected to either dock, so it's definitely the tablet that is broken. Looking inside I can see both plastic pieces are broken off.
What are people's experience with this? Is Asus telling they won't cover it before you even send it in? Are they giving any estimates for what it costs to repair? Pretty crappy that they make a small structural item out of plastic and then say "screw you".

Yes, this is the oen issue that made me put ASUS on my blacklist of ****ty companies -- they put it on "user-induced damage", unseen, and if you send it in, they'll take the 125 Euros anyway, even if they only take a crap and wipe their ***es with the RMA form. I'm happy with the tablet as it nw runs, but NONE of that happiness has to do with AUSS' screwy behavior, poor hardware design decisions and even worse customer support.
I was looking for a Win8 tablet for the family, but the only viable option for now is the HP Envy v2 -- as I said, I will never buy ASUS again. And I have never boycotted anything in my life, be it digital or physical, so that says something. :S
