I am really starting to like WebOS a lot and since we know it is the tablets and not the OS that were scrapped, I have to wonder about a possible groundswell of new development for the native operating system.
I am not quite as excited as most about getting FroYo on this thing, I actually think it may be a downgrade, performance-wise. GingerBread struck me as slightly different than FroYo, but Honeycomb is sweet. I also have a Viewsonic Gtablet running the FlashBack Honeycomb ROM and it is pretty damn nice, but I find WebOS to be a little more elegant and refined feeling. Especially after installing PreWare and adding the performance patches and stuff.
I am not a developer, but there are a lot of them around here and quite a few of them either already got or will get a touchpad to play with. I am hoping that some of them will be impressed enough (or intrigued enough) to look at the WebOS SDK and PDK.
Since there are already drivers for full functionality within WebOS, I would think it would not be too arduous for some of these intrepid devs to port a few of the popular apps over for those sticking with it. There is also a web-based widget builder called Project Ares that looks interesting.
Anybody else? Bueller?
I would continue using WebOS if there's a way to use Android apps on it
Webos is probably my favorite tablet os now. The problem is there's no Apps for it. I bought the touchpad for my girlfriend yesterday and she said she loved it but after 10 minutes of just checking facebook and some websites she was like, ok what now?
They need more games optimized for it and better prices

Just read a site claiming to have an andriod dump from HP's tablet. There will be decent android roms in no time.

i'm kind of torn about using android on my TP.
i quite like the way webOS works.
i honestly can't understand why HP gave up on this thing. it's brilliant.
sure it's a little slow out of the box, but so was my HTC magic. a new rom fixed that.
it has fantastic support from the preware community.
i'm loving gestures and cards.
a 3G modem would've been nice (or a usb port to allow a dongle), but again not a big deal given that most phones these days can do wireless hotspot and 99.9% of the time if i have my tablet, i also have my phone. therefore it's always able to connect.
i'll admit the build quality leaves a bit to be desired, but for a first up effort it's pretty good.
the touchstone dock is brilliant.
i'm tempted to buy a second one so i'll have one at home and one at work.
i love android. (i'm somewhat of a fanboy)
i recommend it to friends all of the time. but after experiencing webOS i'm starting to wonder why.
EDIT: maybe HP will sell or licence webOS off to google and we can get the best of both worlds?
Since WebOS was released on the Pre few years ago I always wanted to try this OS as I mostly heard good comments about it and it looked good.
I must say that WebOS on a tablet is WOW! I love it.
I really hope new apps will be developed and that I will be able to continue to use WebOS.
I like my Android phone, but I would be happy continuing having a WebOS tablet.
I have heard that the HP Touchpad has a 3G and 4G wan aready on the chip and just waiting for software to activate. Just like the Nook color bluetooth that it never came with but was activated within Gingerbread.

I really hope we will get the dual boot option. I would love to use that UbuntuChroot on it while enjoying Froyo or GB
I've always been interested in webOS ever playing witha mates palm pre. The cheap touchpads seemed like a great way of getting a webOS device.
I don't understand why people want to remove webOS, however I can understand trying to port android apps to it.
I'm still waiting delivery of my touchpad, cant wait to get playing around with it.
Does anyone know if I can mess with the browser so I can access chrome webapps?
I bought for two reasons, price and Android. For $149 you cant go wrong, I thought of buying more to try and sell for a small profit but decided against it. My local Arrons had one in their store, but had access to 6 more WebOS looks cool, but I am not familiar with it at all. I really dont care to learn it being WebOS is done. If worse comes to worse and only the Android market/APPS will work on it then I will be happy Heck, who am I kidding, at such a low price I am happy no matter what!

The point is, WebOS is not "done." In fact, it sounds like HP is planning to put a lot more into it.

Hopefully the Palmdroid project produces results. Because I prefer the webOS experience.

Yep, WebOS development will continue.
I really don't understand the cry for Android either. Froyo is not that amazing, Gingerbread isn't that great either. Heck, I have owned quite a few Honeycomb tablets (Xoom, rooted Nook Color, Dell Streak 7) and none of them impressed me.
I get that people here overwhelmingly like Android. But the only merit I can see for putting Android on this guy is for the apps. And, lets be honest, anything besides Android 3.X isn't even optimized for a large display like the touchpad. The Gmail application for example is just a giant list of emails. The WebOS email interface is leagues ahead because it actually takes advantage of the screen size by layering slide-panels instead of just being a giant list of messages!
WebOS is an awesome operating system. The only things holding it back to this point have been total garbage hardware (the Pre was trash) and a lack of developer interest. With HP pushing out hundreds and hundreds of thousands of these tablets in days, its safe to say that development will speed up on the WebOS front. Applications will start to trickle in faster, and things will improve.
The desire to have Android, yet alone a non 3.0 Android, on this thing just seems silly. But whatever, each to his or her own. I for one can appreciate the qualities of WebOS and will keep using it since it is a polished, tablet friendly operating system. After the "oh wow look what I did" factor of having Android 2.X on a tablet wore off, I realized non-Honeycomb Android on a tablet really sucks.
I already have an Android Tablet...it's cool.
I bought this for a cheap price, to have as a "coffee table" device for cruising the net and checking email. Maybe a youtube video once in a while.
AND...when you register the device you still get 50GB of cloud storage through box.net. I'm looking forward to using mine and have no intentions of putting any other OS on it...
I am a huge android fan, but Ill admit that after using the TP for a few days, WebOS is hands down a better tablet OS. Its just so much more structured. Thats why Im looking forward to see what comes out of the Palmdroid project. From my understanding, theyre trying to port the Dalvik VM over to WebOS which will allow android apps to run in "cards".
Been checking this every day for the past week now

WebOS is dead Install Android 3.2 Honeycomb
Haha no, not at all. This is the worst OS I've ever touched. The OS is overall sluggish and not made for a fluid experience what so ever.
I just had mine fail to download a 30MB System update about 10 or so times.
Browsing the poor apps in the market takes a minute to load each individual apps page.
The pre-installed "apps" are a link to go download it on the market which takes the aforementioned minute load of the page.
The best app would have to be the youtube app that opens up the browser to Youtube.com, absolutely ingenious!
It has. . nothing. On it. I can't even find apps if there were good apps, you can't go to the top of free apps.. there is either top, paid, or free search tabs but not a top free.
Even the browser leaves me yearning for more as I sit there and watch the checkered white boarder all over.
Is anyone else thinking about actually USING WebOS?
Yes, me!
Im running psycho-f15c-kernel-touchpad_3.0.2-41 on my ToychPad at 1.9GHz 100% stable! This thing is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaast!
Best and fastest Tab ever and WebOS is simply extraordinary... what a loss that that the best Tab EVER is discontinued and the most elegant and accomplished OS for a tablet has been sentenced to death. I have an ipad2 that I really like and a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" that I use as my phone running Android 2.3.
Nothing touches WebOS, nothing! And nothing touches the speed of the Touchpad at 1.9Ghz! Ill use and love the Touchpad for as long as I can can, even iwht limited apps and an OS that is frozen in time. What a great loss, this is just so amazingly great! If HP had launched this a year ago and seriousely wanting to make it a success, this would be for sure the ipad killer... my a million miles.. really sad, but happy I have one and that works so well.
Thank guys for making this thing work so well and fast. XDA is the best community on the internet, period!
I just got my touchpad in the mail and have been playing with it for the last couple of hours. Here is my first impression:
wow, webos is pretty impressive. I owned and used iphones, ipads, android phones and tablets extensively and I can say that webos has the simplicity and user friendliness of ios and the multitasking and openness of android. Kind of best of both worlds. If it had the dev support of ios and android, it would certainly be better than ios and a huge competitor to android.
it is such a shame that it is almost dead. HP should have sold these tabs at $250 at launch ($50 below manufacturing cost) just like they do with the consoles and build dev support. Once established, they would make a ton of money off of their app market by selling media and apps just like apple.
introducing this tab at the same price point as the already established and ridiculously popular ipad with no apps and dev support was a quick and sure way to failure.
Such a shame. I really would have liked to see a mature webos platform as a strong competitor.
ps. I am writing this comment on my touchpad 32gb while listening to grooveshark on another browser window. The speakers are pretty loud and have great audio quality. Too bad Hulu just blocked access.
ps2. I really like the usa today app a lot. Nice job with the design and the use of gestures. That is exactly what touchcreen apps should be like
Defiantly liking WebOS alot but until more development takes place atm I will move to android when it surfaces.

Wait? That's your response???
"but it's bluetooth so it should work."
Well, a pitchfork will do many things, some of them not what you want but still "compatible" in that sense. Not going down that rosy path of spending ~$30 for something that "may" work.

So, what you're saying is your useless recommendation for a touchpad is reinforced by the fact that you have an icrap and you'll use it for that, BUT you recommend it for a touchpad when you have absolutely NO clue if it will work with one?
Heck, I have a brick, I KNOW it will work with breaking a window, but I am pretty sure it will also let me possibly make oatmeal, you too should try it.
This is a useless recommendation. Yes, it WILL work with an icrap, but if you have absolutely NO idea it will work with an touchpad, don't make out as though it will. We have enough useless recommendations for hardware that simply never will nor has worked with this device.
BTW, icraps suck.

Feeling stupid that nearly ALL BT keyboards will work with this HP I see. Take your trolling elsewhere.
The vast majority of keyboards and mice out there will use bluetooth HID so they all use the same drivers and will work on Android or pretty much any OS. The HP WebOS Touchpad keyboard works fine in Android, Windows 7, etc because its HID.

So, wait, a random person who hasn't received said keyboard, is backed up by another person who hasn't tried it with the TouchPad, and the both of you equal definitive proof that this thing will work with the TouchPad.
Good thing you both consider "me" the troll yet I'm sure there are plenty of bridges you'd gladly sell someone for cash up front and no deed.
The BT Human Interface profile is a standard so, theoretically, anything that complies should work.

You OBVIOUSLY have not researched BT keyboards for your HP TP or you would already know this. Done with you dude, you tried to be a smarta$$ and fell on your face in doing so. No way out of it now.
This was sold out hours from my post, this can be closed. Thanks.
I have the Logitech tablet Keyboard for Android, and I tworks fine with the HP Touchpad, at least in Cyanogenmod9 (OaTs Mod).
The Tablet keyboard for iPad is the same hardware with some slightly different keys. The Android one has Home Back and Menu keys.
Overall, it is pretty nice as the keyboard cover doubles as a stand for your tablet.
And if anyone cares, You can pair the Razer Orochi the HP touchpad as well.
Not that I really ever expect there to be much issue with a standard Bluetooth HID mouse or keyboard.
Wow!!! I missed out on a sweet deal. I have been looking to buy one of these for a while.
Well, I did find one from Logitech (dented box deals) for few bucks more.
I plan on using it with my wife's Dell Streak 7 since I already have a BT keyboard from HP for the TP. As others mentioned, BT profile should allow this keyboard to be able to be used on most BT enabled tablets & devices.
FYI... the deal from Logitech is still available if anyone is interested.
They have it for $41.99...
Dented Box mean new / unsold items with damaged packaging... I have bought many "dented box" items and been perfectly fine.
Here is the link.
http://www.logitech.com/en-us/promotional-items/devices/9954
BTW... I was real surprised to see how fast this thread turned ugly for no reason...
You can also pick them up new on Ebay for about $32 shipped
I saw someone post one time here (lost it, I'll never find that post again lol) that there was a tablet launcher that would be able to run several apps at one time on the screen that was being developed. Does anyone remember this? It sounded like a great idea, and I'd like to see if it's still in development. It would prove to be an incredibly useful thing on this tablet, especially using the dock.

Overskreen is a browser app that allows multiple browsers (which is awesome, BTW). He's looking for a program to do what the new Samsung Note is doing how you can have a window for an actual app and not just a browser. I looked heavily into it and found a company that was (can't remember if they still are) working on it but it seemed like a lost hope. Hopefully with Samsung bringing it back, the source will be released and this will start again. I know our tablet can def handle it. But don't take what I say as a final; I'm sure missed some posts/links that could say otherwise. Keep us posted! :highfive:

Personally, I am extremely disappointed in google for this move. Instead of supporting innovation of their OS that could rightfully cripple apple's attractiveness to business in favor of android-- they have stifled the creativity of the largest body of developers. With the ability that cornerstone could provide, android becomes a viable platform as a thin client, or desktop replacement for many companies.
I am currently involved in using our beloved tf700 for a project to replace thin clients for one of our IT firm's customers. I am currently letting them use the tf700, dock, usb hub, usb kb/mouse, and usb network adapter- then plug the hdmi into a full size monitor for a replacement. I install overskreen, stickit player, aircalc, and the xtralogic rdp client to facilitate a pretty user friendly android desktop. They can connect to a full terminal server session for a full windows desktop but usually use a remoteapp connection for a quick word or excel document if needed. If cornerstone was something that I could use instead- it would make all but the rdp client unneeded.
BRING BACK CORNERSTONE-- or here is a novel idea.... build it into android!!! Just as cyan-mod was going to do as an option. Have a control in the google app store that allows people to see a compatibility warning about using it in a window. Then offer an attractive option to developers to charge a little more to provide the functionality in their application.

The problem is that cornerstone stopped development on their drivers. It isn't so much an app, but an addition to the framework to allow for this. I'm not sure if they continued to ics, but the last update they made to their source was back in February. It's a possibility that it could be modified to work, but without looking, I don't know if that's still an option.
My idea is that once official cm is ready, I'll clone the source and attempt to build it in, but it's a long shot.

I really think it would be a great idea. Seriously, why bully people out of something cool because it may not work properly? Isn't that the point of development? If they brought it back as a sort of switch in the settings, that would be perfectly fine. Maybe include a warning. That way they give the user the choice to use something awesome that may or may not work properly.
The way Google handled it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Devs can't use Samsung proprietary s/w in their ROMs because of copyright issues and XDA rules prohibit the inclusion of copyrighted material in ROMs made available on the site to protect them from litigation. At the end of the day it comes down to Samsung being more important to Google than CM/Cornerstone. As the article stated, CM can do anything they want but Google reserves the right to sanction their efforts by restricting Play access. It's a tough world we live in and it's not always fair.

That is a fantastic article, and a horrific tale. I've been wondering why things went south myself.
I would like to get a discussion going. See what others think, maybe theres some good I'm not seeing, or maybe more bad.
I like what Google does and I like their products. But they have been P***ing me off here lately with two of their products. The first one is the Nexus Q, not because of the price, but it's functionality, and when they released it... The other is the Chromecast. My reasons, I'm a GoogleTV owner. I've had my Sony Blu-ray GoogleTV since bate. Got it about 3 to 4 months after GoogleTV came out. Before the Nexus Q, GoogleTV had it's fair share of disappointments. No Hulu, which ain't the biggest deal breaker, with all the other content it does have. The Logitech being another one, then it taking so long for GoogleTV to get updated to Honeycomb. The Honeycomb update was about 9 months before Google I/O 2012, and the Nexus Q unveiling. Going into that year, at CES we seen a new batch of GoogleTV devices. It seemed like thing would start to look up for the platform. I wasn't expecting another version update at that years I/O, but maybe some more good news. Instead, we got the Nexus Q. I took it as a smack in the face. No real if any news about GoogleTV that I can remember at that years I/O. I hated it, I felt they should have gave us a Nexus GoogleTV with the Nexus Q features. Nonetheless, the Nexus Q didn't pan out. At this years CES we seen some more GoogleTV devices, and I felt at this years Google I/O they really need to do something with this platform. A new version update which they did, and I was hoping for a Nexus GooglTV/ Q hybrid which they didn't. I feel they should release a Nexus GoogleTV, I think it will help the platform. I'm glad about the update coming to GoogleTV, but can't help to think Google wasn't overly excited about the update. It seemed like they just said here, here's your stupid update. And now, they release another media device, that seems to feel like another smack in the face. And it's running a striped down version of GoogleTV source " http://blog.gtvhacker.com/ " There's rumors of another Media box coming from Google, is it a GoogleTV, or another smack in the face? Anyways the kicker, is both these devices were limited compared to GoogleTV. GoogleTV has been the redheaded stepchild of Google. It has it's potential I don't know why Google is doing so little with it. Let me know what you guys think. Do you think Chromecast will become more like GoogleTV. Do you think will see more and better things for the OG GoogleTV?
I don't really think Chromecast is headed to be an alternative or replace GoogleTV. I don't have any of them myself, but from what I've read about them, Chromecast seems like a replacement for an HDMI cable, just an easier way to transfer video and audio to your TV. Also, it makes it possible to play video from multiple devices like a tablet or computer pretty easily. The GoogleTV is a complete system that has everything contained to be able to get internet videos and movies to play on your TV, whereas Chromecast is merely a means to transfer the videos, kinda like DLNA.
It's not that I think their going to replace GoogleTV. It's more about the lack of support their giving the platform. Their entering basically the same market as the GoogleTV, with new products while ignoring another. Maybe after this update to JB I'll be more at ease. I would still like to see some hardware from Google tho...

Google says the Nexus Player is sold out, Best Buy etc... seem to have no stock.
Do you think they maybe releasing the next generation Nexus Player?
Just my guess, but I think there won't be next model or if there will, it will be a cheaper version. In my view Player flopped. Developers didnt do much for it and there wasnt really added value in it...
I hope they do release a new version.. it is a great little product that does suffer from lack of dev support. A new product launch could spark some excitement for the product and get some now devs on board.
They did release the Android N preview for it. Maybe that means that they do have future plans for it.
I don't think they would discontinue it but I could see them finding a way to make it smaller and more Chromecast like (who wouldn't want a Chromecast-sized dongle that runs Android TV instead allowing full apps and remote support)
It definitely flopped, but if I were Google, I'd give it another shot. Everything in entertainment is moving toward standalone streaming boxes like this, and I still haven't figured out why Android TV in particular hasn't attracted developers. It should be the logical alternative to Apple TV. Maybe they released the N preview to test the waters, and if devs finally bite, they'll either put the NP back in stock or put out a successor.
The fact alone that it has a remote should give it an advantage over the Chromecast. I don't know anyone who wants to flip through their smartphone apps every time they want to control their TV. Conversely, watching YouTube on an AppleTV is a pain precisely because it can't pair with your phone and you're forced to type out searches with an on-screen keyboard, and of course you also don't have the option of watching YouTube through Kodi. All it needs is a couple more big names in the Play Store and it would catch like wildfire, and the recent addition of HBO Go is a start.

Thing is....
Google does believe people would rather use their phone(which they already have in use or on them constantly) to control media content.
And actually, google is more focused on AndroidTV being built into televisions. That is their future, but they don't plan on giving up on people that don't wish to replace their existing televisions.
Sony, LG, Vizio.... All trending towards further AndroidTV integration.
They we restock the NP as we know it. But likely there will be a new device soon enough. They have to essentially compete with the fire TV's(not the fire stick) and be capable of 4k output.
Amazon has not been profiting on any of their ftv devices though.... And that is a whole nother discussion. But I'd expect a new Nexus Player device to hit the market by years end.
